New and still learning about cars as I've recently found a big interest in them. Does this guide apply to a VE SV6 aswell as the v8. Particularly for someone beginning a project and looking to slap a supercharger under the hood as the end goal
Should do, its still input and exhaust tuning and flow. Wont have as big an effect (wont put out 280KW), and still needs the tune, but it will make some difference.
Just make sure you take it to a dyno to find what it needs done. Might cook your car if you don’t and will likely lead you down the right path for more power
I mean you can do a cam and tune youself for around $1500-2000....... My advice to most, do a cam 'first' if your a car guy that can and if you know about tuning etc. Dont waste your time on other softer mods..... If you've been around the block, cam and base tune first. Not only that it will look stock all the way around.
Hi F&F - well Kermit the bright green L98 / 2009 /SS manual Ute rolled up today. Seen a little track time in factory finish (but is lowered.) Only 114 K km, seems tight and well loved by the last mechanic owner ( thanks Mick). Planning the usual mods - OTR, Exhaust, tune and then a mild cam down the road a bit. Thanks for all your very motivational vids guys, much appreciated....
Congratulations on the new purchase mate. We have done several videos on the VE ute modifications including the ones you have listed above. Keep us updated and are you thinking of taking it to the track? Very low kms btw, well done.

Hey Clunie, don’t know if you remember a good few months ago I told you about my VE SSV Special Edition that had stuffed lifters. A week ago I had VCM put all 8 new lifters in and they also found a bent pushrod. They also put in a new cam. They disconnected the AFM and also put in a cold air intake system then retuned it. It’s now got an extra 32.4KW. It all set me back $5000. Would love to put in an exhaust system to give it a nice sound. Nothing too loud. I don’t want something cheap and nasty. VCM quoted me $4400. I haven’t done anything about it yet and really didn’t want to spend that much.
G'day Clemmo, yes I remember and well done on fixing your lifters and sorry to hear about your pushrod! In terms of an awesome exhaust to match your new cam mod, I can't speak highly enough of the DPE mild steel systems. They are now made by Manta as DPE sold the business. A twin 2.5 or 3" mild steel system, coupled with ceramic coated headers in 1 and 5/8s or 1 and 7/8s, will make your VE sound awesome!!
Keep an eye on that otr, looks like you've got the series 1 from vcm. They were prone to leaking, they changed them a few years ago. They new ones have about 5-6 clips holding the front half to the back that goes to the throttle body now.
Was about to post the same warning. Definitely stay away the older VCM OTR's without clips. If I were to buy new I'd go Harrop because the metal U clips they use are impossible to break, whereas the new VCM design uses plastic tabs as clips.
@@bennymac2997 G'day Benny, we showed the power level prior to the tune on the video and from memory it was 238rwkw. Unfortunately, we didnt have a power level reading prior to fitting the otr, exhaust and headers though.
Hi Clunie. Thankyou for sharing these videos and your knowledge! I have learnt stacks from watching. This is a bit of a journey for me. I am learning about cars (internal workings) and would like to buy a manual VE II V8 Ute (eventually). I need to learn how to drive a manual first so will start with a learner.. then get a little mazda 3 SP23 😅 its been good to see what mods to get and what not to - Im in my early 30s .. not interested in attracting the johnny hoppers! Hope youre well and looking forward to more content! Jack
Thanks for the video Im my case having a charged GTS the costs can explode. With the cam going in next month and chiller thats another 6 grand , then need to start thinking about fuel pumps . Anything over 700hp in a GTS needs a upgraded fuel pump .. They are around 4 grand . Also thinking of going the 2650 LSA blower , thats another 7 grand Thankfully im single haha!
G'day Curtis, you betcha as soon as you head down the forced induction path, things quickly escalate. Give me a shout if you need advice or options when selecting your cam and the 2650. Our new fuel system is on its way from the US and will be installed in coming weeks.
That's why I'm thinking of going killer boost inlet and turbo on my old VT SS ls1. More cheaper options to play around with. 5.3 iron junk yard truck blocks etc. I'll do most myself also to save few bucks. Fuel? I think Ill just put a 540 pump in the standard tank and run a relay for now. Quick and easy...Pro charger is another option.
Just stumbled upon your channel. All really good mods! Last had my Commodore many years ago. Tip for others, If you just want to go quicker in a straight line, cheapest mod I did was to put really small wheels on the rear. I put 14inch steels (185/55) on the rear. Gives you a 10% quicker final drive. Looks stupid, is dangerous, tyres are way too small for the car, and in a hard stop, you wont stop quickly, and the ABS goes nuts. But for $50 off gumtree it will definitely give you a small but noticeably increase in acceleration. Again, its pretty dangerous to drive on the road with undersize wheel and tyre! Unbeatable performance mod, in a straight line anyway. Definite ghetto mod lol
Just subbed, nice video, I have my corvette 76, wife has a nice little M3, and I just picked up a VYSS 2002, cant wait to play with it alittle, long time since I have had a commodore, looking forward to putting in some of these (Its stock)
Thx, great vlog for those looking at starting modding, But did Nang Kang become a boutique tyre lmao I bought them once but chewed threw them very quick my opinion is your better off just buying a set of Bridgestones or Pirelli not only do they have way more grip but they last five times as long so they pay for themselves. I put a set of Bridgestone RE-11s on the VZ Monaro and it’s night and day compared to Nang Kangs
G'day, we recommend Nankang semi slicks for track day usage as a good cost/value option. For every day usage, Bridgestone RE003s and Pirelli P Zeros are worth a look.
Need aftermarket ECU for tune after OTR intake and exhaust? 2008 VE V6 here with OTR in now and 2.5 twin cat back about to go in. Running Pentrite HPR5 doesn't miss a beat. Regards, Jas. Rockhampton Queensland
288 RWK on that green ute, it sounded like it had a cam upgrade? My SSV put out 284 RWK with same upgrades except no cam upgrade, but has cats removed.
Subscribing. Thanks mate. For anyone who wants to do the above on the cheap, another one (if you have an LS3 with bimodal already) get used hsv headers and midsection of exhaust. 90% of power though comes from the intake a tune
G'day mate, I know he was going so well too!! Apparently he hit neutral and then dropped down two gears and it just slid. Fair old shunt, looked like a broken man afterwards. Poor fella.
Had a little tear in my eye too, he had done such a great job in the Mustang. Missed him in race 2 and it is a very hard place to pass. Take the aero off those race cars!
Also i have worked out the aftermarket averages per 10KW gain its $1,000 dollars which includes labour and cost of upgrades, so if you want around 50 extra Kw at the engine its going to cost $5K its that simple or put a cam and OTR full exhaust and tune and its around 8 to 10K depending on items used and who does it? So add the labour and tune costs and the OTR is going to cost you 1,000 all up cost of otr and in fill panels and then the tune?
G’day fellas. Keen to see what you are going to do regarding brake ducting on the VF? I had a Redline that I tracked a while ago, picking up another one this week. Could never quite find a way to route the ducting from the fog light cavities back to the centre of the disc. I have seen the Production 3E Redlines do this, but not sure how. Keen for your thoughts, and actually doing it? Thanks in advance!
G'day Joshua, we are really interested in that too. We are fitting brake ducts to the VE at the moment and hopefully we can learn a few things for the Redline. How did you manage to pick up another Redline in this hot market? Well done!!
So jealous, have a 2008 Calais V6 for over 5 years, great car easy to get speeding fines if not careful. But sluggish off the mark, 1st upgrade would be trade in for a V8 but live on a dirt road and no garage I park on dirt/mud. Last car was a 2006 Omega and found on nearby creek crossing (50m from home) air intake in bumper, hydrolocked oops. Insurance paid more than I paid for it :D. Over radiator intake does seem a good idea but is an air filter included with that? Might be best to keep stock but after having manual trans all my life auto is so boring, although my (damn should have kept it) HQ Stato was auto. Going to keep my Calais, great comfortable car good for country roads and is an Aussie made Holden.
just wondering if the intake filter will fit a 2009 ve commodore international and if so could you point me in the right direction to one?? love the vid
That’s why I like Ford’s more because the the air box it easy to remove but Holden’s are pretty good I wouldn’t mind a v8 Holden but a 80s Vc commodore
how about the walkingshaw 1/2 a u pipe which contacts directly to the MAP sensor and the intake on the engine, still cheaper than a VCM or OTR, as the engine light will come on and you really need to get the ECU tuning done, but with out the VCM otr and just a walkingshaw intake you dont have a engine light and get at least 10KW extra with out the tune, with a tune around 20KW? But all tunes range from $400.00 to about 600.00 depending on who does it?
since hot air raises . plus the bottom of the intake is just afew meters away, from top of the RAD. .AND part of the intake heats up i think some coolant tape might help. [ cos percent of cool air is not 100 % - COOL ish ]
@@ClunieGarage i do think so . when i change my air intake tube on my 05 skyline coupe . to a stillen plastic air intake tube. after the test drive. i felted the tube on the engine side. it was pretty warm, while the other side was much cooler. so i wrap some coolant tape to help for more cooler air. oh my brother brought a 06 ss holden weeks ago. nice car.
Semi slicks are ok for daily driving? Everything I have read has said semi slicks are primarily for race days? I have done all your other recommended upgrades on my VE Calais, just contemplating the tyres.
My VF SSV 6.0 AFM has a stock exhaust system except for 2.5" higher flowing Zetti rear mufflers. I don't really like cars to be too loud or drone. What kind of power level can I get from an otr and tune without upgrading the exhaust? Can I run a mild cam on stock exhaust or would I have to go up to a 2.5" or 3"? (I think stock is 2.25")
G'day, we ran a video about a year ago that profiles our dyno results from the stock, Walkinshaw 310 pack ( includes OTR, exhaust, tune) and then finally our supercharger. Results from stock can be 10-20rwkw with otr and enhanced tune but I would recommend headers and exhaust for full benefit.
Can these mods be applied to a statesman for the most part? What air intake should i get for a 2007 wm statesman if so? :) thanks for these vids! Im interested so much now i have time...
G'day, I am not too sure as I don't have personal experience in Brisbane as we are in Canberra. I think Tekno Performance are in yiur neck of the woods and they seem to be a very reputable tune shop and do lots of Holden mods.
Quick question I have a ve ss with Otr and 3 inch exhaust but no headers and no tune would I have more power still with out a tune or could I still get it tuned without the headers for more power or are they essential. Cheers mate
The nangkang AR1 is a beast of a track tyre I find it comparable to a toyo r888 or Yokohama ad08 and it’s better value for money and longer lasting - since upgrading to my 6piston conversion I can’t run an 18 anymore and the Ar1s don’t yet come in an appropriate size combo on 19s
Clunie Garage I have been waiting on an appropriate front size - they previously only did a 255/40 r19 which was a bit blocky and slightly oversized for the front - if they have a 245/35 I’m in the game!
@@ssidewayz G'day mate, get there! I have just bought the sizes listed above and fitted to the original VF Redline staggered wheels - all good and we will make a video on it on the weekend.

Agreed on brakes, new shocks and swaybars go along way too could be done for around 1k. Are you going to do them on this Fred possibly? I would ditch the otr and just mod the airbox. Put that money towards 3.73s in an auto and 4.11s in a manual. Anything less is just a dog along the east coast. Especially if not tracking and could leave off slicks too.
G'day Dan, we are about to fit BC Racing coilovers and will do an episode on these $2.2k. We will probably do sway bars and linkages at the same time. You could also mod the air box if you wanted to. Slicks are a considerarion for tracking the car.
So I was looking around to get my car super charged, VE SDI 6c 3L sport wagon, they want $16,457 is that about normal? And Do you think you can put some links in your vids for some of this stuff you talk about , taking me hours just to find anything.
G'day Grant, $16k sounds expensive I know but a bolt on blower, tune and all the supporting mods add up. Have you thought about putting that money to a V8 conversion? Probably get better bang for buck and less $'s!

the utes real world cost is around 5 to 6K thats full exhaust and otr and tune, with labour to fit and dyno time to tune, not less than a 1,000 bucks, plus i am keeping my Vf redline stock as so far i have seen so many tuned redlines and SSV's which they try to say nope the car was driven like a old man had it, but in reality it was driven hard and try to sell it after, yet stock examples are going for more than those with OTR, tunes etc including harrop 325 KW tuned units?

New and still learning about cars as I've recently found a big interest in them. Does this guide apply to a VE SV6 aswell as the v8. Particularly for someone beginning a project and looking to slap a supercharger under the hood as the end goal
Should do, its still input and exhaust tuning and flow. Wont have as big an effect (wont put out 280KW), and still needs the tune, but it will make some difference.
OTR, exhaust and tune should put you at around 200rwkw. Standard is around 160 to 170
If you go a supercharger kit, including the exhaust and OTR etc, you can theoretically see up to 300rwkw
You’ve been dropped on your head eh?
@@ClunieGarage Thanks guys - after watching you two I am developing a bit of a crafty plan. Not all development has been okayed by the Minister of Finance ;-). So might just cruise for a bit until I assemble all the tasty bits, then get stuck in. keep up the good work - cheers
Another great video for u vf owners...cheers!
Thanks Matt!! Glad you liked it mate. Heaps more vids coming soon on the channel as our VF race car build is nearly finished.
Love the content

Thanks mate, will do!!
I have an VN89 APV group5i. All still stock, still goes well.
Ah nice one mate, make sure you keep it forever!
Thanks for the video!
Thanks bro! Just getting to cars at an late age, and this is amazing bro 🤙🏾 cheers
Happy to help!
Wow, thats good power at the wheels from otr, exhaust and tune
G'day David, yes we were pretty happy with the results.
Bro you were amazing. Seriously
Thank you so much 😀
Hay mate I’m a ssv redline v8 owner and would love if you can do a video on the 2015 model wheals Tyers and big dice brakes
G'day, we did do a video on the standard VF tyres as part of our track tyre review. See the attached link if you are interested. ua-cam.com/video/R-tAS8P7ltA/v-deo.html
Thanks so much for that info. I’ll definitely look into it.
Keep an eye on that otr, looks like you've got the series 1 from vcm.
They were prone to leaking, they changed them a few years ago.
They new ones have about 5-6 clips holding the front half to the back that goes to the throttle body now.
Cheers, thanks for the heads up mate. Will keep an eye on it as it is the VCM model. We have the harrop otr fitted to the VF.
@@ClunieGarage My vcm leaked so I bought a Harrop ( 2 piece with clips.)
Was about to post the same warning. Definitely stay away the older VCM OTR's without clips. If I were to buy new I'd go Harrop because the metal U clips they use are impossible to break, whereas the new VCM design uses plastic tabs as clips.
Thinking of a top end rebuild of my LS1 ton Vy 🤔 These tips and tricks are handy , thanks 🤩
G'day Tim, glad you liked them and thanks for watching.
Those A9X canvas banners!!
G'day, check out House of Muscle if you like them!
thats pretty awesome power. My ls2 only gets 300 rwkw with a 232/236 112 cam but I do get 675nm of torque
Thanks mate, yes we were very happy with the results. Our tuner is also pretty handy!!
What was your stock dyno numbers tho?
@@bennymac2997 G'day Benny, we showed the power level prior to the tune on the video and from memory it was 238rwkw. Unfortunately, we didnt have a power level reading prior to fitting the otr, exhaust and headers though.
@@ClunieGarage
Yep seen that but my question was for @Malcolm Henham
@@bennymac2997 it' was 235 rwkw with otr and exhaust then 255 after tune. It never got tested std. Cam and headers gave me 45 rwkw to take it too 300
Jack
Thanks for watching Jack. Best of luck tracking down a ute. Great investment going forward and platform for a lot of fun.
Loved hearing it sing on the dyno. Not quite a SB2.2, but still sounds good from the General. Where is your 427 Chevy SS?
G'day Tom, the VF is stripped bare and getting a fuel system at the moment. More updates coming soon.
great video no bs love it keep it up
Thanks mate, glad you like it! Make sure you sub for our latest updates and videos.
Great video keep it up !
Cheers, thanks Roger!
Thanks for the video
Im my case having a charged GTS the costs can explode. With the cam going in next month and chiller thats another 6 grand , then need to start thinking about fuel pumps . Anything over 700hp in a GTS needs a upgraded fuel pump .. They are around 4 grand .
Also thinking of going the 2650 LSA blower , thats another 7 grand
Thankfully im single haha!
Go Curtis, love to see 600rwkw out of your GTS.
@@angry9901 Thanks Check out my channel for the video on it in the next month or so
G'day Curtis, you betcha as soon as you head down the forced induction path, things quickly escalate.
Don't disregard the standard 1900... upgrade cooling of the charger and can make big torque and can get really good trap times
Nice one mate and good luck with the mods and thanks for thr sub!
G'day Jas, you won't need an aftermarket ECU. Factory one will be fine and this can be tuned. Nice choice with Penrite!
imo if ya gunna start rev in the upper band a trunion upgrade is a cheap insurance 300-400 dollars
G'day mate, we agree and we have made a video on this very topic for our new engine build for the VE - ua-cam.com/video/plgGGRam5jE/v-deo.html
Great information and I can apply it to my VN 5 litre. New subscriber. Cheers
Awesome, glad you liked it mate!
i do need an otr. my ssv ute is currently making 320rwkw with the standard intake setup.. just got a cam, extractors, twin 3 inch exhaust and tune
G'day mate, yes a otr would work nicely with the mods you have already made.
Ultrex nex eshaust is at that price, and i highly recomend them, run it on my ute and it shits all over the weak xforce that i used to have
Nice one mate, we have never heard of them.
Got some kingdig it exhaust cut outs 3inch for two and that cost 1k Inc shipping.
That will work as well! 😀
Sick vid mate

Doing the 10-$15k mods next
Thanks for this great episode !!!
Thanks Dave, glad you liked it mate.
288 RWK on that green ute, it sounded like it had a cam upgrade?
My SSV put out 284 RWK with same upgrades except no cam upgrade, but has cats removed.
G'day, no cam upgrade on ute as yet. Only otr, headers, exhuast and tune - the tune has over run in it amd thats why it sounds like it has a cam 😛
Subscribing. Thanks mate. For anyone who wants to do the above on the cheap, another one (if you have an LS3 with bimodal already) get used hsv headers and midsection of exhaust. 90% of power though comes from the intake a tune
Awesome, thanks for the sub mate. Great tips also on the used headers. Nice one.

Mate poor Slade, he was looking good...
Take the aero off those race cars!
good effort that shows the potential of the l.s.
crackle and popping shows a lean condition or did the tuner do this on purpose ?
Good little overview, keen for the next episode
Thanks mate, glad you liked it!
As a SS owner if you got the money for OTR, exhaust I’d just go cam as well aha that’s what I did and never regretted it, 370kw
G'day Zane, our thoughts exactly and check out our latest video. ua-cam.com/video/38B_j7QyuRk/v-deo.html
Great tips, legend
G'day mate, yes an otr will come with a specific air filter inside it.
Number one mod, new timing chains for the V6.
G’day mate, I recently had a Harrop otr installed on my VF. Have you guys found a easy way of removing the spring clips? Maybe a how to vid? Cheers
Thanks guys 👍🏾
Some great tips.. really interested in the first 3 on my 07 calais v.
Thanks for the video
Thanks mate, hope they help and make your car better!
just wondering if the intake filter will fit a 2009 ve commodore international and if so could you point me in the right direction to one?? love the vid
G'day mate, not quite following your question. Would love to help out, can you please rephrase?
Who is doing tunes for $400? Workshop rates must be very low.
since hot air raises . plus the bottom of the intake is just afew meters away, from top of the RAD. .AND part of the intake heats up i think some coolant tape might help. [ cos percent of cool air is not 100 % - COOL ish ]
G'day mate, not quite following this comment. Do you think we should use coolant tape on the intake?
@@ClunieGarage i do think so . when i change my air intake tube on my 05 skyline coupe . to a stillen plastic air intake tube. after the test drive. i felted the tube on the engine side. it was pretty warm, while the other side was much cooler. so i wrap some coolant tape to help for more cooler air. oh my brother brought a 06 ss holden weeks ago. nice car.
does the catch can on that green ve work? It doesn't seem like the port on the back of the intake would have much vacuum.
G'day, yes it does now. Check out our latest video and we have now plumbed it correctly.
Semi slicks are ok for daily driving? Everything I have read has said semi slicks are primarily for race days? I have done all your other recommended upgrades on my VE Calais, just contemplating the tyres.
G'day mate, definitely not for a daily driver. Try some Michelin Pilot Sport 4S or Bridgestone RE003s for daily duties.
What a cool video! Very well explained.. Mate I would really appreciate if you can suggest some performance upgrades for Mazda 3 2014
I reckon the sandpit monster style exhaust suits you to a T
Can these mods be applied to a statesman for the most part? What air intake should i get for a 2007 wm statesman if so? :) thanks for these vids! Im interested so much now i have time...
Thanks for the video 👍🏼im in North brisbane who should I go see please to do some work on my beast please.
G'day, I am not too sure as I don't have personal experience in Brisbane as we are in Canberra. I think Tekno Performance are in yiur neck of the woods and they seem to be a very reputable tune shop and do lots of Holden mods.
@@ClunieGarage tha k you hun have a great weekend 😉👍🏽
Quick question I have a ve ss with Otr and 3 inch exhaust but no headers and no tune would I have more power still with out a tune or could I still get it tuned without the headers for more power or are they essential. Cheers mate
The nangkang AR1 is a beast of a track tyre I find it comparable to a toyo r888 or Yokohama ad08 and it’s better value for money and longer lasting - since upgrading to my 6piston conversion I can’t run an 18 anymore and the Ar1s don’t yet come in an appropriate size combo on 19s
G'day mate, yes we highly rate the AR1s. We just bought 275-35-19 and 245-35-19 in the AR1s for the Nascar ute. What combo size 19s are you after?
Clunie Garage I have been waiting on an appropriate front size - they previously only did a 255/40 r19 which was a bit blocky and slightly oversized for the front - if they have a 245/35 I’m in the game!
@@ssidewayz G'day mate, get there! I have just bought the sizes listed above and fitted to the original VF Redline staggered wheels - all good and we will make a video on it on the weekend.

How good is the integrated headers in the LFX motor used in the VF SV6?
@@ClunieGarage Look forward to the motor going back in!

G'day Grant, $16k sounds expensive I know but a bolt on blower, tune and all the supporting mods add up. Have you thought about putting that money to a V8 conversion? Probably get better bang for buck and less $'s!

Can you do these mods in stages, like if i do the cold air intake i dont need to go out and get the exhaust anytime soon?
G'day mate, yes you can, but you will need a tune once all the bolt ons are done so you can maximise the effect of the new parts workimg together.
probably a stupid question, but would running 285kw with the first few mods be legal for a P plater?
the utes real world cost is around 5 to 6K thats full exhaust and otr and tune, with labour to fit and dyno time to tune, not less than a 1,000 bucks, plus i am keeping my Vf redline stock as so far i have seen so many tuned redlines and SSV's which they try to say nope the car was driven like a old man had it, but in reality it was driven hard and try to sell it after, yet stock examples are going for more than those with OTR, tunes etc including harrop 325 KW tuned units?
G'day, just to clarify, the mods outlined in the video are $1,000 or less each.

G'day Alan, nice choice with the VN. Sounds like a keeper!
Can I assume the same mods would apply to my 05 VZ with a LS1? Only 190,000 kms on it.
Yes, though the ls1s heads dont flow as good as the rectangular ported heads found on the l76 77 ls3 so the gains wont be as big. But you'll still gain
