Everyone watching make sure you let anyone you know with a Commodore (Friends, family, work colleges etc) to take extra security measures, including getting them to watch this video.
I think getting under that guard yourself and re-routing the horn wire but also replace it with wires that look the same that when cut will automatically trigger the alarm. Any clued up auto elec could do this for you. Also consider installing 2 horns with the second on a different circuit to the factory one so the alarm will still sound through the second horn. 💪 Holden for Life 🦁
When you said “do it for me, because I want to see you drive your vf commodores” I winked at my phone, I’m 19 and I occasionally drive my mums daily drive black vf ss station wagon LS2 with factory fitted extractors, we are the second owners and have had it from low km, it’s too cool for school and I feel privileged when I get to slowly drive it, these Aussie car are and icon and I thank you for showing me how to try and prevent the theft of my beloved commodore
That's the expensive option, If it's an auto a simple switch breaking the starter solenoid wire will foil them. Moving the horn is probably the best way to limit the damage to your car though I'd imagine as they'd probably move on when the stock horn wire wasn't there.
Great video Matt. It does not surprise me that VF Holden and VF HSV owners have to take extra measures to protect their pride and joy from these low life scumbags. I am a victim of car theft that happened to me back in the mid 1970's. I never got my car back and it still plays on my mind even today. The courts are way too lenient on these scumbags. I owned a VZ HSV Clubsport from new back in January 2006 and I owned her for nearly 5 years and just thinking about having that car stolen made me cringe.
I was told by the dealer to make sure the security card with the key code and security pin are not left in the owners manual wallet in the glove box. I think that drastically reduces the chance of replicating a key (otherwise it’s random for any device trying to replicate a key). Also don’t leave keys in plain sight and hide or leave spare keys away from the property car is kept (friends, family etc). If someone really wants something they’ll probably get it right? it’s about not presenting thieves an easy opportunity helped by doing all the simple things plus adding all the deterrents and making it harder especially for the small time thieves looking for the quick and easy car to pinch.
There are other old school anti theft methods that can be adapted to this situation-kill switch, it can’t be added to the coil anymore but can be added to other circuits like the fuel pump or low current wire to the starter relay. 4:02 Also do a horn wiring bypass and route the wires further away from the wheel arch so that the crooks can’t stop the alarm. Install a second horn on the passenger side of the car, so that even if they cut the wires and the bypass wires the outer one will still go.
For those on a budget - Horn Relocation - Dummy Horn - OBD Port Lock - Kill Switch - BCM Locking - Pedal Locking Plate - GPS Tracker For those with $$ on top of the above, IGLA immobiliser or even better the alarm package is the ultimate protection for these vehicles
Thankyou for bringing awareness, has gone beyond ridiculous in the last year or so, I happened to get an IGLA installed back when this first started over a year ago but never imagined it getting this bad so quickly
I was tempted to put a hidden kill switch in the fuel pump wire run but it could be a bit risky if the switch accidentally opened, then the car would stop. Can insert a dummy fuse in place of the fuel pump fuse if it’s parked in a risky area and you can be bothered doing that. The car will start but die after about 5 seconds.
@@aussie8114 Yeah a kill switch is a good way of slowing them down, however there have been more and more instances of them being bypassed... all comes down to the install and how much time they have with the car to play around I suppose Same with steering locks, may slow them down a bit but easy enough to cut the steering wheel to remove the lock with a cordless grinder
Better still is the "Cop-Lock" (Look it up online). It's hooks over the brake pedal and has a special key. It will be very discouraging for thieves who see it and they'll probably walk away. It can't be cut unless oyu happen to be carrying an Oxy and have a LOT of time.

I would change the horn wiring a bit so the wire they cut goes to a relay and the relay turns the horn on so when the alarm is armed the relay is on and when the wire is cut the relay will drop out and the horn will go off, this would stop them damaging the door like would still happen with the simple bypass wire.
Go the extra step and spend 1 weekend doing something to make it much harder for someone to thieve your car. Ie; relocate the cable for your bonnet release to a concealed location of your choice and effect a physical alteration to the bits n pieces that make it start/run. Can be as simple as installing a switch to open/close the circuitry to the starter motor, or simply removing the relay for it. (I would leave it in place as a visual misguide but duplicate some of the wiring ((so original one still receives signal from switchgear and still clicks)) and divert it to another location out of sight thats easy to access and mount another relay there. Or you could go to the hassle of either relocating the OBSD socket and/or making it inaccessible without first getting past a device that is in the way. There's a lot og options oht there so think outside the box for what works for your situation. RFID or NFC technology is widely accessible to the general public now and the componentry is dirt cheap to buy. A better but significantly more expensive option is to install hard barricading like bollards that physically prohibit the vehicle from moving beyond that point. Another consideration that not enough people give due thought too is the inherent security weakness that the garage door poses. Both structurally and electronically. Most older types can be forced off thier tracks without too much trouble and the RF technology widely and openly available to the general public makes the RF signal between the remote and the receiver attached to the motor, about as vulnerable to intercept and hijacking as it could possibly be. And the older doors with the keyd lock in them are are waste of time in safeguarding the garage contents to all but the most juvenile and opportunistic thieves, some extra locking devices holding the door to the ground and/or additional brackets to retain the door rollers in, or near, the runners arw paramount if you still have the older, non-panel type door. And a problem with the newer panel foors is they often have decent spaces between the door components and the house structure, making it relatively easy to find out what is behind the door.... Don't just rely on the common and popular OTS measures that everyone else employs. Use them, but take the extra step and do something unique that make nicking your vehicle as difficult and/or improbable as it could practically be.
Even years back I had some little grub try and pinch my manual HQ GTS and couldn’t get it out of the driveway. But yea we do need to protect our precious rides from scum.

I also like the idea of a fake obd2 port that's wired to 12v to fry their gear. The horn bypass is interesting but also wondering if some 250 stainless flexible conduit could work too. Only just came across this video and another one so I'll be parking mine back in the garage from now on. Don't see a point of an alarm or an obd2 port lock. Is there a visual deterrent? So they don't just start cutting away looking for the horn wire? Would be good so they see its got protection and never try
Yes they use a blank key fob, change the key programming of the car and set the blank to the new code. For the lock they either use a lock pick tool for the door or just the old fashion way with a screw driver
I can understand your hesitancy in making this video. I have been hugely concerned about vehicle theft and I think it is only going to get worse if only because Government regulations are reducing people's desire and ability to purchase new cars, thus making existing cars far more desirable. And with lunatics like Bowen in charge, petrol vehicles like Commodores will become even more coveted by thieves. A high end steering wheel lock should be a no-brainer regardless of any other theft prevention devices. I realise almost everything can be bypassed by professional thieves but every layer of protection adds time. A concealed GPS - even two of them in totally different locations on the vehicle - should also be strongly considered by people who own the most coveted petrol vehicles - Commodores and Falcons being prime targets.
Bollards inside the garage bro. I swear by them. The core hole ones that get grouted in, not the ones that get bolted to the slab . For a couple hundred bucks it’s a no brainer

Those people saying if its manual its safe. That might be true in the case of a 15 year old breaking in and stealing keys. These guys with OBD tools are older, far more savvy and can more than likely drive manual.
These days with the amount of hackable computers on any car, the ultimate theft protection is just a key start and a manual gearstick. I knew a guy that saved his car from being stolen cause the kid that broke into it put the shifter into what he thought was drive but in fact it was 4th gear lol, and couldn't drive off.
yeah i had no idea about this issue yet after seeing a few videos, sadly i know HOW to do it, that said, no ones getting my VF unless they wanna pry it from my cold dead hands
Juet curious guys i yas a vs which is in decent nick panels are straight just a 6 in her still id hate for her to get stolen. Iv heard its vfs getting affected if there any news on vs i realise they are old and probs arent hard to steal either way. What are some ways to improve a vs commodores security . Its a series 2 aswell
As someone who used to program keys, I doubt its as simple as plugging something into the OBD and away you go. Keyless start's biggest fault is people keeping their keys on a hallway table right next to the garage door. I just installed bollards in my garage and a good old fashioned fuel pump cut off. These days, you're better off having it stolen this way than being robbed in your sleep at gunpoint
Unfortunately there is many cctv videos on social media showing criminals ripping the wheel arch guard away , disconnecting the horn and then opening the drivers door . Reaching for the obd2 port and within 5-10 minutes driving away Most of these vehicles are parked at shopping centres and or workplaces.
Key word “used” you’ve been out of the game a long time by the sound of it. it is very simple. As simple as plugging the immo tool into the obd and creating a new wireless key fob. This isn’t key cloning either they’re basically wiping the original key fobs and programming new ones. But you of all people should know that if you used to program keys lol
It's point less putting an air tag tracking , professional thieves will use a bug finder ,then use a jammer to jam frequencies ... obd device sounds promising but not fool proof there's always a back door method , eg a master code to over ride - your best to have a good alarm system that communicates two way , for example if some one opens any door it sends a message to key fob . Also has a immobiliser, artificial voice alert on car plus more , they are quite expensive used on exotic cars and so on
if put a relay on the horn so it kills the fuel pump. atleast then once its cut they can never take off with it. better to get it towed to an auto electrical place then stolen.
I put a gps tracker in my car , then I went to the wreckers and got the obd2 port and a length of wiring from a wreck , I then unscrewed my active obd2 port and zip tied it up out of sight and installed the fake obd2 …… that will be hard to program :) or even to deal with , unless they use a tilt Tray , and hopefully my GPS tracker on watchdog mode should warn me. P.s look for people who have unusual shipping container activity ? What about a fake horn wire that’s really 240AC. ( joking)
Throttle controllers are the cheapest and most effective option as they disable the throttle. However, like this video says put in an alarm relay so that even if they cut the wire it doesn't disable the alarm. Thieving Baster**
Nothing will stop PRO thief,i had a VK stolen in the late 90s ,it had 2 very hidden kill switches and the old club lock,(one switch was under my foot /underneath the carpet) and they still stole it,but it was found 12mths later too late as i had already been paid my insurance.
True, nothing will stop them, but the harder you make it for them, and the longer it takes to get it, the more chance is they'll move along to another one. If it's one specific car they're after, then yeah, they'll get it eventually.
My brother in law has relocated the horn and other security measures...but best and cheapest thing he did was buy a finger sign sticker for that inner guard...so as soon as anyone looks in there, its a big fck you, walk away now. 👌
Apple Air Tags and their Samsung equivalent might not be a good idea. From what I have read... these tags work by peer to peer sharing.... the tag relays to the nearest compatible phone/s and they relay the location to your phone etc. What I recall about this idea is if the thief uses those apps... they will see the air tags. I was looking at the wiring diagrams in a Haynes Manual for a VF V8 (Chapter 12-100 Diagram 10). Perhaps a switch at the start of the injector circuit.... and another one or two switches on the fuel pump circuit might make a car difficult to steal without a tilt tray or tow truck. That said, a keypad immobiliser looks the best solution. I have never been a big fan of the push start button..... perhaps it might be possible to shift the wiring to a more suitable location and use a keyed ignition.
Yes tags relying on another smart phone near by to track its location . But they can be hidden well and the speaker in the tag can be removed so it doesn’t beep
@@CurtisLSA If the thieves have the apps on their phones.... and their phones are the closest... they will know the tags /tiles are in the car somewhere. At the end of the day, it is a balancing act..ya want the car back but the thieves will torch it to destroy any DNA evidence if necessary.
think most commodore variants have the horn in the front corner near the wheel arch. Issue is someone has created an app that allows keys to be programmed and these devices can be purchased online for nothing. Push button start doesnt need a key so previous commodore range harder to take as needed a key
Dare I say I reckon there are employees at your respective state motor registry who could be supplying addresses to these scumbags, so if you have an option to register the car at a different address(relative/friend) then that could eliminate this avenue.
I've never been so glad to be too poor for a VF. If anyone decided to put a kill switch in theirs, put it where you wouldn't expect it to be and then don't tell ANYONE where it is unless you're telling the next owner
The best thing anyone can do is disconnect your batteries. If you truly love and care about your VF commodore, and regardless of where you are at do the same thing, disconnect your battery.
I don’t know why you were hesitant to make the video. I have seen 6 different videos today on exactly this topic, so even the dumb crims know how to do it now.
Paul Maric's channel Car Expert has an excellent vid on this matter. Ross Reviews also has one showing a VF being stolen from a Browns Plains (QLD) carpark in broad daylight, just hooked by a flatbed with no plates on it. These scum are everywhere.
I was warning a few channels last year that I'm seeing these commodores showing up in the USA still with NSW number plates on them! There is a guy in 1 particular clip on UA-cam with like 7 or 8 Australian RHD commodores all sitting in his yard most with still their Australian registration plates on them? That seems extremely suspicious to me as you are supposed to hand in your number plates when you "dispose" of a vehicle? None of these commodores (all of them were V8 SS being the lowest trim and included a lot of club sports and high end HSVs) looked unroadworthy or damaged in the slightest?
When you say the key start VF’s are not being stolen as much, how are they getting stolen? My dad’s car is a VF SV6 key start and your comments are now worrying me.
Also don’t use your garage as a storage shed or a home gym, use it to garage your car overnight. Insure your car for agreed value. I don’t have a Holden these days but I do have a pricey new car. I have 4 seperate custom made security precautions in place. They would have to winch it up onto a flatbed to steal it. If they want it that bad they can have it, I will get my agreed value payout and buy a new one 🚙
How about you just buy a club lock from autobarn or supercheaps or any other automotive shop, dont be lazy and fit that thing. Its a great deterent, can even get the brake pedal one aswell. Go back to basics and life is not as bad as you think. Its easier.

I realise almost everything can be bypassed by professional thieves but every layer of protection adds time. A concealed GPS - even two of them in totally different locations on the vehicle - should also be strongly considered by people who own the most coveted petrol vehicles - Commodores and Falcons being prime targets.
Well said i agree
Thanks Matt
OBDSync Locks the BCM so Keys can't be programmed to it, I have done half a dozen cars and tested it. Key programming fails every time
Interesting thanks for the information
Bollards inside the garage bro. I swear by them.
The core hole ones that get grouted in, not the ones that get bolted to the slab .
For a couple hundred bucks it’s a no brainer
Compared to what the car is worth both financially and emotionally it's like paying for a coffee.
You can call them pieces of shit....It's OK...
Some Hsv have data dot , are they useful or traceable?
only if its been stripped and sold sep can trace it back to its original build
@CurtisLSA ok so they are useful, what's required to make them visible, purple light? Apparently my Maloo has them but never spotted any.
@@wayno23 its a spray on parts across the vehilce . Looks like a patch of dirty that has flicked up on to say the calipers its all brown that cant be washed off or removed . You wont see them without HSVs special locators im told
@CurtisLSA cheers mate so they're useless unless you got that special hsv torch 🔦 😒
Not just holdens every push button start car. Golfs mainly the R are also targeted too
i wasnt aware of that , thanks for commenting and letting others know of that make and model
So Toyota 86 too?
@@xkimopyemy understanding is the VF is targeted because the horn wire is easily accessible making it particularly vulnerable to this. Otherwise the alarm sounds when you open the door
Are ZB commodores (I know it's a Vauxhall/Opel Insignia) subject to the same issues?
There is criminals who want to steal a ZB?
I own the last model Caprice (LS3), are they stealing these too or we off the list for now.
if its push button start then you would be on the list
Forget buying a obd port lock. Remove data wires from the obd port
Good point
Is it just vf hsv or sv6 too
Any push button start commodore
OBDSYNC can prevent the recoding of the car
Put a fuel cut out switch somewhere only you know where it is
Good thinking
Hey m8 I'm just about to buy one but no one will insure I've tried all of them so there pushing them off the road into sheds do you know we're I can get insurance thanks for the warning vid
Thanks for watching. Depends on age and the area or risk in that area these days for insurance
Those people saying if its manual its safe. That might be true in the case of a 15 year old breaking in and stealing keys.
These guys with OBD tools are older, far more savvy and can more than likely drive manual.
Yes good point
Well said Matt
thanks
I use the old school club lock 🔒
lots are hopefully now
@@CurtisLSA no little grubs getting by a club lock lol
Can always key in door and turn to dead lock them so they have to get in the window
Get some magnetic Ford badges, guaranteed it won't get knocked off
lol
As someone who used to program keys, I doubt its as simple as plugging something into the OBD and away you go. Keyless start's biggest fault is people keeping their keys on a hallway table right next to the garage door.
I just installed bollards in my garage and a good old fashioned fuel pump cut off.
These days, you're better off having it stolen this way than being robbed in your sleep at gunpoint
Unfortunately there is many cctv videos on social media showing criminals ripping the wheel arch guard away , disconnecting the horn and then opening the drivers door . Reaching for the obd2 port and within 5-10 minutes driving away
Most of these vehicles are parked at shopping centres and or workplaces.
This is similar to scum knocking off Dodge Hellcats in the states.
pri.ks thats all they are
The old trusted club lock its visual and more time for the maggots to take!! Or bollards?
More items the better
It's point less putting an air tag tracking , professional thieves will use a bug finder ,then use a jammer to jam frequencies ... obd device sounds promising but not fool proof there's always a back door method , eg a master code to over ride - your best to have a good alarm system that communicates two way , for example if some one opens any door it sends a message to key fob . Also has a immobiliser, artificial voice alert on car plus more , they are quite expensive used on exotic cars and so on
Take the fuel pump fuse or relay out
It’s on the top of my list don’t worry
luckily i have a vz but i still know that all commodores get stolen the most out of every other car model its out of control
if put a relay on the horn so it kills the fuel pump. atleast then once its cut they can never take off with it. better to get it towed to an auto electrical place then stolen.
This would have all been avoided if they used same technology as mobile with finger print start buttom
good point
An actual key should be reintroduced into every new car and be mandatory by law.
I hear you and agree
I put a gps tracker in my car , then I went to the wreckers and got the obd2 port and a length of wiring from a wreck , I then unscrewed my active obd2 port and zip tied it up out of sight and installed the fake obd2 …… that will be hard to program :) or even to deal with , unless they use a tilt Tray , and hopefully my GPS tracker on watchdog mode should warn me. P.s look for people who have unusual shipping container activity ? What about a fake horn wire that’s really 240AC. ( joking)
Love the last suggestion
Razor wire around the horn could be an option also
Since holden fucked that up and put the horn(s) where it can be cut or unplugged people should move them so it's harder to get to
yes its being done by most i think
Don't touch a person's pride and joy. Work hard yourself and go buy one.
Agreed
Question is how the hell did they learn this and why did holden make it this ezy to nick em
think most commodore variants have the horn in the front corner near the wheel arch.
Move your horn loom from the guard. Stuff them
theives dont like noise, relocate the horn and install a louder one
Agreed yes
I don’t know why you were hesitant to make the video. I have seen 6 different videos today on exactly this topic, so even the dumb crims know how to do it now.
Paul Maric's channel Car Expert has an excellent vid on this matter. Ross Reviews also has one showing a VF being stolen from a Browns Plains (QLD) carpark in broad daylight, just hooked by a flatbed with no plates on it. These scum are everywhere.
Not sure who Paul is not heard of them but good to hear more UA-camrs are getting the notice out there more exposure the better
@@CurtisLSA ua-cam.com/video/vxzFCm5gyak/v-deo.html
Ever had to get a key programmed for one? If its anything like the Key in MY VZ the thieves will give up.
no one wants your sv6
It's a shame Magnavolt isn't a reality.
If they want it that bad they can have it, I will get my agreed value payout and buy a new one 🚙
true yes i agree
Agreed.. but its still a hard loss off your pride and joy tho
If they can’t take it they will trash it you are fighting a endless battle
If it can’t be started though especially at home then they would leave the scene pretty fast
So they make a new key for $100 but Holden charge like $400.
Who's the real theft
50 dollars to change the key fob battery where it’s less that 5 dollars for the battery at any supermarket in Australia
Do what I do,
I leave my rotty tied up at the front of my house 🤣 goodluck is all I can say
well thats another idea lol
spamming of parts probably serves as a method for finding victims :/
Yes that is true
How about you just buy a club lock from autobarn or supercheaps or any other automotive shop, dont be lazy and fit that thing. Its a great deterent, can even get the brake pedal one aswell. Go back to basics and life is not as bad as you think. Its easier.
I agree with you ! If you look at the windscreen in this actual video I’m onto it already
I bet the police are all over this.. 😒
relocate the horn is their response. Not, we are out patrolling the streets lol
Nah, they're more concerned about your loud exhaust and low ride height😂
Nah, the cops are on to less important things.

A lot of snow flakes in the comments. It is no one elses fault - you, yes you take responsibility and secure your car. It is not hard.
