Also shake the wood or whatever your hauling to prove said “that ain’t going nowhere” I do it every time. Then if I’m with my dad I look at him for confirmation and he confirms “yup that ain’t going nowhere”
Yeah I haven’t heard of that either but I know you’re right because when you purchase them, they come wrapped around the barrel 3 times. So good shit for pointing that out
Well the fact that most instructions for ratchet straps specify at least 2 runs around are required, it doesn't seem too far fetched for DOT to require another lol
Actually it's super important to get several wraps on it while ratcheting as they're a friction hold item. And will loosen if not. But otherwise nice video man!
Best to leave your strap threaded through the ratchet but not tightened. That way when you need to use it it’s already set up. Unless you’re dealing with 4” straps then just roll them up
@@eddiechervony7679 Nope there are times that I have had to unthread from ratchet and slip through a small hole to get it around what you want to tie down.
Why do people insert the strap in the rachet with it open? You have to feed it through the spool then back through the handle. Fold it shut with the slot facing across then slide the strap through and start ratcheting and you're done. No double feeding.
Thanks for this. I work in a warehouse and found out why all the straps were getting messed up. I've since then put time aside to fix them up and prep them for our live loads and drop offs. Appreciate it!
Im glad you posted this. Very few people know how to do this and get their strap stuck, then complain that it is broken when they caused the problem themselves.
The clear video I’ve seen yet. I can use those tie down strings But I think I have a pair of ratchet straps in my tool shed. Ratchet straps work as good as pull nylon strings but those are one time use.
It's easier to lay the buckle handle flat against itself with the slot to secure at a 90°to it or upwards. Then pass the loose end up through the slot back towards the length snug before ratcheting tight.
Sometimes it’s actually helpful to put a couple twists in the strap to keep it from flapping in the wind like a flat strap would, it depends on what and where you’re strapping down
As simple as it should be and looks, even trying to follow the (harbor freight) instructions were about as clear as mud. Thanks a ton for the quick, easy to follow video. You'll end up in history books one day.
Thank you for this video! My straps were set up all wrong for moving my couch and this video helped! I'm glad there's people making content like this so readily available on UA-cam
You gotta leave it a little slack and then tighten it with the ratchet so that there are at least 3 full wraps. The friction between the wraps is what stops it from coming loose.
This is a great help thank you so much but it would probably help more people if the camera isn't moved from side to side it sort of disorients the situation but it's a great video!
Do it closed so the handle is out of the way. Position the slot up and feed from bottom. Way easier! Make sure you get a full wrap when it’s tight so it won’t slip!
I was once leaving a flea market and saw a truck loading up a bedroom suite they purchased. They had a head and foot board for a bed stacked on top. They were securing it all with literally kite string. Over the years I have seen some really bad ideas when it comes to hauling stuff. Great video, I knew how to do already, but watched anyway 😀
If you real the instructions on ratchet straps. It will tell you to also have to full rotations of the barrel. To give you more friction to the locking mechanism.
This is exactly how I have done it for the last 20+ years...tiktok say we need to run it underneath, then through the slit.... but I guess that's for people who needed instructional videos to learn how to use a ratchet strap before they could operate them 😅
Why do My straps come lose every time? I pull this trailer and put a lawnmower inside. I strap it down to the floor tight and every time i get to my destination all 2 straps are lose. I tried 2 different brands and they did the same!
Maybe the issue isn't the straps. I'm sure you know this but you want to get at least to wraps when you're tightening the ratchets. Maybe your load is shifting which is causing the loose straps. If you have one or two straps at an angle in front of the load and one or two at an angle in the back then the load can't shift and come loose.
I was trying to make the video easy to understand so I had the slot horizontal, brought the strap through and then back over the top. It only goes through the slot once. I may do a (better) update video showing the slot vertical facing up. Then you would just come up through the slot and pull the slack back. Same result but probably easier.. Thanks for watching and your comment.
Tie a loop in the plain end after its thru the slot so it cant pull out when released. Leave a little slack to get two to 3 wraps on the shaft before it pulls up tight. Grips better.
You need a half twist in the strap because they will shake and flutter in the wind stretching your straps and making them loose. That half twist stops that.
Was sitting in the back if my pickup for like 5 solid minutes just kinda poking the ratchet wherever i thought it might go with the strap...lol thanks for saving me before someone noticed 😅
Thank you so much - your video is the first one that has made sense and I've seen a few) - and worked lol. Plus you took your time to explain without rushing through the process. So happy : )
okay I watched this 50 times or so. here is what I have learned on how to loosen the straps. don't turn circle more than 2 times. then open it 180 degrees then briskly pull the longer end and it will losen up just like he shows you.

I can watch this a million times over and when I have my straps in my hand it’s still a 50/50 odds I’ll get it wrong 😂
They can be confusing.

Watched a 6 minute video dude had me confused. This dude explained it in seconds. Appreciate it.
So glad it was helpful. Ill my shorts are quick and to the point. Well at least that's the goal.
I agree. Mine came with a useless video showing it off already threaded. Duh. This was immediately clear.
You must also state: yup...that ain't goin nowhere.
And wipe your hands together like you're dusting them off

According to DOT it's not safe unless the straps makes 3 complete wraps around the barrel
Not saying you're wrong, but could you provide a reference in fmcsr? I've pulled open deck for 15 years and never heard that.
Yeah I haven’t heard of that either but I know you’re right because when you purchase them, they come wrapped around the barrel 3 times. So good shit for pointing that out
Exactly!
3 wraps is the correct way!💯%

This!!! It’s important to do minimal 5 or more….

1 full turn does the job perfectly, recommending 3 is to make sure people do 1...
because people are the way they are.
Fail: You didn't tug on the strap while saying "That's not going anywhere."
Darn I missed that step.
I use them often and manage to screw it up every time even though I use the correct method
They can be aggravating at times. I used to mess up all the time too.

I’m glad you like the video. Thanks for watching and for your comments Andrew. 👍
There are so many of these videos but yours is the only one that is actually helpful, thank you!
Thank you
What should you do with the excess strap to ensure it doesn’t fly around? Is there a special method or knot?
There is actually. I’m planning another video soon.
Coil it up and tuck between the strap and what you are strapping down and tighten binding it all together works for most things
Do you have a link for that specific strap? Thanks
The clear video I’ve seen yet.
I can use those tie down strings
But I think I have a pair of ratchet straps in my tool shed.
Ratchet straps work as good as pull nylon strings but those are one time use.
I desperately needed to tie a kayak down and this dude helped out so much. Our strap came undone. What a clutch move.
I thought this was an excellent demonstration. Informative and direct without a lot of unnecessary blah, blah, blah. Very good. T.U.
Thx for making this. I was desperate and all I could find were 20 minute videos on how to do this !!! Life saver!
Glad I could help!
Thank you for not talking endlessly, and getting to the point.
That's how they work! I did finally figure it out, but I wish I had watched this video first! LOL...great explanation!
Awesome! Thank you! I think I know a way to make it even easier to remember. I'll do another video soon.
Absolutely MASSIVE thanks for making such a clear video. Absolutely brilliant

After all What twist is removed ??
You don’t want to feed the trap in if it’s twisted.
Very straightforward video. Thank you very much!!
