    cameras can be added to the wingtips as well. making eh gemini a pusher would put the props in turbulent air, and cause vibrations, but would work. similar to the piaggio avanti aircraft, they have unique noise profile, if you have ever heard one. that noise is the pressure differential from the wing hitting the props. i don't consider it a good thing, but it could be done.

      i know that sound!! i fell in love with it's design, a few occasionally fly out of my airport where i work. i thought the noise was caused by the exhaust hitting the props.

      If you took this UAV up to its maximum altitude, then let it glide then take it back up to the max how far could you potentially travel, could it fly hundreds of miles

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  7 років тому +1

      it would fly the furthest at a relatively high altitude, without descending, because the air is thinner, and travel through it is more efficient.
      This is the strategy behind commercial air flights, and the reason they expend extra fuel to get to their cruising altitude.
      at sea level, the theoretical max distance is 120 km, with the 3kg battery pack, in stock configuration.

    I really like watching these kind of videos. I use fly weight shift ultralight trikes, but I can't afford it anymore. So this is the next best thing. I disabled & was wonder how much a basic setup like yours would cost. I would really like to purchase to purchase a glider, & perhaps make it solar powered to help make the battery life longer.

    Enjoyed the flight, just a question, was there any concern of large aircraft in the area?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  2 роки тому

      no concern. The area which we fly is a bit of a dead zone for air traffic between 100ft AGL and 20,000. we do monitor carefully for low level traffic. it's near an airport. this was also made before the regulations in our country.

    Brilliant ideas...can the avionics autopilot ,tvtrans.engines ,esc,batteries etc.. defeat high weather tempreture of more than 40 centigrades working for more than 4hrs on 1000meters altitude ?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 років тому

      +Salih Mehdi temperatures get less at higher altitudes, not more. so, no problem, just need insulation for extreme altitudes, and extreme low temperatures. At these altitudes, it is not a problem. it would be interesting to add an outside air temperature sensor to the plane, however. also a barometric sensor, so sense density altitude. alternately, airspeed could be compared with average groundspeed.

    Good flight. I see, landed with the engine running? Still there was to reserve batteries? Whether rotating on stream?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  8 років тому

      +OLEG69M there was still about 15% of the battery remaining. I have the ESC's set up to free-wheel, or turn freely, as it makes more drag, which helps to descend, and helps a little to flatten the glide slope for landing.

      @OLEG69M 8 років тому

      +FPVREVIEWS Understand. The high speed without the engine running?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  8 років тому

      +OLEG69M the climb is with the motors running. the glide is with the motors not running. I shut them off, to keep a reserve of electrical power, in case i have to abort a landing, divert, or need power to get back to the landing zone.

  • @cjm2005
    @cjm2005 9 років тому

    This is pretty impressive, but how do you know if you're remaining outside CAS?
    Also, you experienced a classic inversion - I've flown in quite a few (full size plane) and the transition from the bottom layer to the top is quite remarkable. The turbulence just gets switched off!

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  9 років тому

      +cjm2005 we are outside the US, and at the time of filming, there were absolutely no rules regarding RC aircraft, etc. Here, the most dangerous place to fly is low over the designated model field. not much air traffic here anyways.
      yes, it's very neat to be able to get above the local weather. many times, i have noticed a slightly turbulent layer, about every 1000 to 2000 ft. and the wind direction seems to change and strength also, with every layer.

    • @cjm2005
      @cjm2005 9 років тому

      You need to do a bit of study on meteorology mate, it's absolutely fascinating, even more so when you see it in action in real life observations.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inversion_(meteorology)
      Also, due to the Coriolis effect and surface friction the wind direction and strength changes as you ascend - the general rule is 'increased (in strength) and veered (to the right) going up, slack (less strength) and back (to the left) coming down.
      You can access spot wind charts & use the forecast winds to decide on a cruising altitude if you want to do a long distance flight :)

    Nice flight! If you are planning to fly with no power on a regular basis, I recommend you look to set the speed controllers up to brake the motors and stop the props freewheeling. This would reduce the drag significantly.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  7 років тому +1

      yes, you are absolutely correct, but if you notice, I actually put the plane in a slight dive, to bleed off altitude, as a glide for that height could take over an hour. so i actually wanted the extra drag. you could get a longer flight time with the brake on for sure.

    • @frizstyler
      @frizstyler 6 років тому

      it does not reduce the drag. Also see my reply to the dude further down asking the same. I can prove it on paper if you like physics

    • @frizstyler
      @frizstyler 6 років тому

      My answer wasn't entirely right,i had forgotten about parasitic drag on a freewheeling prop. The answer is,for a given prop with a given pitch and given length, whether or not one should leave it freewheeling depends on the gliding speed. Here is a paper with test data i found: www.peter2000.co.uk/aviation/misc/prop.pdf
      Anyway a collapsing prop is the best solution :)

    Awesome I may try this system out. Currently running uhf fpv system our with GPS autopilot safety feature. I need to make a video soon. I fly this plane 24 miles out before turning around. Usually have to turn around due to battery flight time. My secret is I climb to the top of a fire tower locally that is 150ft high on top of a giant high elevation hill that sits about 200 feet above the rest of the area. I set up my equipment there. I've been testing the plane design to see how much weight it can carry efficiently without requiring so much more power. Reason im testing is because I may switch to diesel engines. The plane so far can carry 15lbs efficiently and 25lbs at max but it requires alot more throttle so I say 15lbs is perfect. That equals to almost 3 gallons of diesel. I may be able to reach much further out in range this way. What do you think?

      I've seen two approaches to high altitude, using lift and climbing relativily slow, and climbing very fast. still not sure which is the best, but the fast method does not need a very big plane.. ha ha. sounds like your ranger would be somewhere in the middle. Looking forward to seeing it.

    On next flight can you mount one camera with no-distortion lens? Seems every go-pro or any other camera has wide-angle or fish-eye lens. Curious what horizon looks like in high altitude. Amazing work.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  8 років тому

      +Mark K from this altitude, no curvature is visible, if that's what you mean. i'll consider using some different settings on the go pro, as they have narrow field of view setting, which makes them look like a normal camera. thanks for your input!

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  8 років тому

      +Mark K airliners fly about 2-3 times that high, and from them, you can't see the curvature, really very well. i think it's not clearly visible until something like 40-50 thousand feet, but i could be mistaken.
      i'm sure google or wiki would have some info.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  8 років тому

      +FPVREVIEWS here is something i found from an airline pilot: "From a friend who was a military pilot, and from sources such as the many books I have read on the SR-71 and U-2 it can be said that this doesn't appear until you get up to 55K-60K feet........
      The highest I have been is 41K on a 777 and I couldn't see anything but a flat horizon."
      sounds like we need a better airplane, i will start designing it... LOL

    • @markk7727
      @markk7727 8 років тому

      +FPVREVIEWS Long story short friend of mine (deep thinker and thinks way too much) told me we live on FLAT EARTH. I laughed in his face and said few things. He challenged me to prove him wrong and I can't use NASA pics or any other pics using wide-angle or fish-eye lens. He said I will never see curvature with my own eyes because there is none. With Earth's size and mathematical formula we should see curvature when looking at horizon from high altitude. At 4k to 5k feet high we should see curvature and 20k feet high curvature should be obvious. More I research this more questions I have. WTF.

    Folding props will eliminate the remaining residual chatter caused by turbulence in glide mode

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  6 років тому +1

      True, would reduce drag too and allow for longer flight times when climbing to altitude. For this flight, we actually welcomed the props spinning freely, and their extra drag, as we slightly held the nose down for most of the descent to get down quicker. there is also electronic braking for the props which will reduce drag and vibrations slightly, but we would rather have the drag for fast descents. the nacelles would have to be redesigned to use folding props, and probably move the motors further away from the wings to allow for rear-ward prop clearance when folded. Most flights have the motor running for almost the entire flight, up to 4+hours, and have no need to fold props. Would be interesting as an option though..

    Folding props or ESC brake would really help your glides back down.

    • @FPVREVIEWS

      yes, it would help, but for this flight, we were actually in a slight dive, and trying to bleed off kinetic energy to get back down more quickly. it would be nice to have options, though.

    Thanks 4 yr quick answer..here in Iraq we suffer high temp. weather since the end of April till the end of September..as u know temp. decreases about 6.5C each 1000meter higher..so in June ,July ,Augest & Sep. temp. at surface is 55-45C ...& that causes many electrical failure in the uavs..even the US troops got problems in using the RQ11 Raven ..as i read..any how i`m thinking of puchasing one..

    after watching this video again, I'm kinda surprised that you don't have the brake enabled on the esc's. Wouldn't enabling the esc brake, therefore stopping the propellers from spinning, reduce drag from the freewheeling props?

    • @frizstyler
      @frizstyler 6 років тому +1

      Nope,as the blades spin freely the drag is reduced compared to being still,u can figure this out considering when spinning,from the blade's frame of reference,the air is moving at angle closer to the chord of the blade. If you can minimize internal friction of the shaft this rotation speed increases to the point of 0 drag and you can have a glider that doesn't need to collapse its prop.

    • @mountaindewdude76
      @mountaindewdude76 6 років тому +2

      frizstyler I never thought about it that way. Thanks for that!

    • @stevec7596
      @stevec7596 6 років тому +1

      Yes, stopping the props would make it glide better. You can test by trying to autorotate your heli with and without the blades spinning and see which one comes down faster.

    • @mountaindewdude76
      @mountaindewdude76 6 років тому

      Steve C hmmm, I'm not real interested in testing that theory with my helicopters lol

    • @frizstyler
      @frizstyler 6 років тому

      during autorotation the blades already have built in inertiawhich can produce lift when you turn up the pitch. however my answer isn't completely right. parasitic drag plays its role for a freewheeling propeller. i found a paper with test data.: www.peter2000.co.uk/aviation/misc/prop.pdf

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  5 років тому

      it will depend on the local conditions, but in my limited experience, above 600 meters AGL is usually pretty clean, but there will be thin layers every so often up higher, as the transitions between layers shear. how many, and spacing will vary.

    Hi, I contacted you last year. I'm interested in this plane, but I do not have the time to build it. Please think about it selling this ARF . Maybe just wood build without covering or something. I will be a professional UAV pilot and searching for fixed wing planes which can fly a long time. In the Netherlands the plane has to be certified. Means it costs us 2000 euro. So the plane will be checked structural and electrical. The plane will be used on trips to foreign countries.

    is there such a thing as a small radar setup for air traffic? be nice to have that on the osd.

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  7 років тому

      Um, no. at the relative speeds that our uav's travel, it would be fairly useless anyway, as we are not fast enough to get out of the way of all but the slowest manned aircraft.
      I think the key will be to make an aircraft which can climb vertically or descend vertically at a very high rate of climb, and in a efficient manner, also controlled, and safe. a hard problem, but one that tilt rotors and reversible/variable pitch thrust can solve.
      much better to use a system of shared V2V communication to share position and heading/speed date, i think.
      the automotive industry will probably provide a working solution there.
      it'll all come together, but will take some time, and there will be ranting and raving in the meantime. also bans, and arrests. basically, lots of hysteria. Sad.

      FPVREVIEWS. I would say the question still stands. And I want it, or at least a form awareness. To avoid each other or simply know there is a jet three miles out and five miles up. Especially, because we can't say we won't continually push our limits. There are apps on my phone that allow me to see commercial planes and where they are in the sky in live feed. Tapping into data already available, and/or uploading our own location actively or indicating it passively. As I push the limits, I feel at least being able to transmit out something other aircraft can pick up would be easiest. Seems like if commercial aircraft tapped into our video out they could avoid us at least. Using a simple algorithm of the signal strength a manned aircraft can workout location, direction and speed. I Just have to imagine it is cheaper to pay engineers of the F35 and they have worked out how to avoid all objects in the sky vs the cost of repair or crash. I also hope their method of avoid is not to shoot us down. Ha ha

    • @FPVREVIEWS

      transponders are the current way of keeping traffic separation. as well as ADSB.
      This si a technical challenge, but a solvable one, and V2V communication, as i mentioned already exists, at least in working prototypes. Hard part about any of this tech is getting the government to approve it. V2V will be the first as it will make the roads safer pretty much immediately, so it's hard, and unpopular for the gov. to drag their feet on the implementation.

    I asked on another video this may be a stupid question but could you extend the range of your transmitter by attaching antenna to something like say a balloon or a kite or maybe even a pole.. something that could go up pretty high to extend the range?

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  2 роки тому +1

      yes, that would absolutely be a possibility. if you need the range for RF. lately, we're focusing mostly on full autonomy, which is even better for most applications, because the aircraft no longer needs to be in range to perform it's mission. There are circumstances which would require operator input, such as for certain types of decision making, but mostly, it can be eliminated, or compensated for my flying more auto missions, which costs almost nothing, and requires no operator for the majority of the flight.

    • @earlyculyer4103
      @earlyculyer4103 2 роки тому

      @@FPVREVIEWS basically autopilot very interesting but what application would you use that for I can see for like deliveries/geography or whatever, but just for hobbyist based applications as in having fun lol it would be exciting to know your RC can fly itself back and forth but that would take the fun out of it after a while. I would like to see how high I could get without the use of drugs lol But seriously I would just like to see how I could get and take photos
      Or just say I did it You know what would be cool to build your own V2 but instead of going fast go real slow so slow that they won't be able to shoot you down because their rockets are too fast hahaha

    • @FPVREVIEWS
      @FPVREVIEWS  2 роки тому

      @@earlyculyer4103 Even with the autonomous systems, you can take various degrees of control, including full manual, and have that RX failsafe option. so it all depends at that point, what is the range of your control, and video systems. fun stuff. I hope nobody shoots at my planes. they are a lot of work to build, and not cheap.. :)
