GoPro Nitro FPV 1100m (Over 3600ft) Altitude Through Clouds Got Scared and Came Down Fast!

  • There were some dark stormy looking rain clouds within reach today, so I reached them! Firt time through a cloud! The airplane doesn't have any problem climbing, my main issue was with the video feed cutting out and going staticky on me :( Need to hook up my higher gain antenna and point it straight up next time!
    My plane has Auto-stabilization, Return To Launch, and Failsafe settings along with complete OSD info display, so I wasn't too worried about losing my bearings if I poked through a cloud. It still is kinda spooky, though. I mean, IFR with an RC Plane? Yikes!
    If things ever get bad, I would just flip it to Auto-Circle mode and cut the throttle and it would have no choice but to circle back down to me. I can hear full-sized planes anytime they get within a mile, so that wasn't an issue... Just trying to be as cautious as possible.

    I've done 2.1 miles on 72. There are also amplifiers that will increase your range tremendously! - If you start getting glitches, just raise your tx - stand on a chair or a table, that should give you a couple thousand feet more, or at least enough to turn around.

    Loved the nose dive!!! Reminded me when I was in a glider and pilot did this. Incredible feeling! Make more! Do you know what was the maximum speed of it when it was coming down?

    • @glassdogangle

      Not sure of the maximum airspeed in the dive. I only had GPS groundspeed data on the OSD. Came down pretty fast, though...

      Well if he went from 3600 feet to ~100 feet in 37 seconds (going by running time on video), that's a dive speed of 64MPH... lucky those wings stayed in one piece!!! Great vid!

    No. There is no delay or lag in the video signal (actually, there is, technically because of the speed of light and radio waves, but it is absolutely undetectable to a human).

  • @glassdogangle

    So I should stay within 4km or so for safety. As far as turning around, hopefully my FY31-AP RTL will kick in as usual and the plane will turn around and head home by itself. When I got out to 4km yesterday, I manually turned on RTL and it turned around and flew home by itself. I test my RTL constantly to make sure it is working properly!

    look good till the end, looks like you're missing some screws in the motor mount.

    • @glassdogangle
      @glassdogangle  7 років тому +5

      Absolutely not. No screws missing. I use a rubber grommet mounting system that was engineered in the late 80's for nitro engines to prevent the airframe from being shaken to death by the vibrations of an otherwise hard-mounted engine. The engine mount on this aircraft is connected to the firewall with 3 rubber dampeners, so the engine shakes a bit when idling. Just like how a car has rubberized engine mounts, so does this aircraft.

    • @rcaddiction7071
      @rcaddiction7071 10 місяців тому

      Is it even possible to get a NOTAM and a clearance to do this kind of thing? I like to do long range FPV and drive many hours to the coast. I fly over the ocean to stay out of US airspace as much as I can but it would be awesome i come request a clearance for the 12 NM I would be in US airspace.
      I don’t think the FAA has made this possible so I will do my thing without talking to traffic until they find a way to get my 6LB plane legally operating in the NAS.

    how do you deal the leaning of the mixture?

    • @MrMagoo321
      @MrMagoo321 5 місяців тому

      The best way is to set your transmitter down and hold the plane tight. Slowly add throttle to full then pick the plane up and point it straight up. Then richen the top end screw (the one most people always only mess with using their fingers) until it bogs a little then lean it out until max rpm then richen it back up a little more. That way any position or fuel level your tank or your plane is in will not cause it to lean out to the point of having to do a dead stick landing. Some guys do this while the plane is flat on the ground but I find with the aerobatics I do the plane pointing up and down you need to pick it up and do it this way. Hope that helps.

      Not to mention, once it does happen, even more laws will be put in place, not just limiting drones, but limiting the rest of us real hobbyists who actually play by the rules.
