Even now, several months later, I'm still ambivalent about the Quest 2. On the one hand, it's incredibly low price means it's opening up the door for VR in a way that no PCVR headset has managed to do so far; and it's the most popular VR headset according to Steam surveys, which does a lot to negate my fears that the success of the Q2 and standalone VR would mean the potential death of PCVR games. @@brandonchutt312
Yeah, Facebook buying Oculus is kind of a mixed bag for me. As much as I hate Facebook, Oculus would probably be out of business by now if they were on their own. The original Rift wasn't really that hot of a seller when compared to the Vive and didn't take off until Facebook lowered the price of it to $400. You can't totally credit Facebook for the success of the CV1 as Oculus was still mostly independent when it was being developed and released, but I really doubt they would have been able to lower it to that price if they didn't have Facebook subsidizing them. And then of course there's the Quest and Quest 2 which were even bigger successes and were made by the time Facebook kicked out Palmer Luckey and completely took control of Oculus.
As for partnering with MS for making headsets for the Xbox, as much as I would love that to happen, I doubt it ever would. Microsoft has zero interest in bringing VR to Xbox. Phil Spencer himself said something along the lines that "nobody is asking for VR". And if they ever did bring VR to Xbox, they would probably just use their own VR headset line, Windows Mixed Reality.
I really wish they would do that though, I would honestly buy a Series X if I could just plug my Rift or my Quest into it. And if they would have supported WMR earlier, I would have bought one of those headsets instead of my Rift. I think they really missed out by not having the Xbox One X and S support Windows Mixed Reality back in 2016/17. They would have really been ahead of the game because it would have been at a price competitive to PS VR and would have offered PC compatibility as well as full room scale inside-out tracking a few years before the Quest and Rift S did. How cool would it have been to have an HDMI port along with the USB port on the front of the console that you can easily and quickly plug in a VR headset to? It would have been so much simpler and elegant than PSVR's series of cables and breakout boxes. In my opinion, that was Microsoft's biggest blunder of this generation and the previous one. It's honestly reminiscent of Nintendo's stubbornness in adopting online gameplay.
They only made Quest the most popular VR platform on the planet. SOOO heartbreaking 🤣🤣🤣

The same thing can happen if you buy digital copies of games. If Sony, Microsoft, or Blizzard for example decided to ban your account you lose all those games too. Or if you buy digital movies on another service and they ban your account you lose all your movies. I am not saying that it isn’t shitty but FB didn’t buy the quest to not have complete control over it.
It does not brick the device. While your account gets banned the device does not. You may just create a new account and if you only use sidequest or steam desktop vr you don't loose anything.
@@rdpjr89 You only get your account banned on Xbox, Sony, or Steam if you are a scammer. Now, being banned from Facebook is way easier.
@@SewerShark it may be easier but it isn’t a plague where accounts are constantly being banned. In 14 years I have only known one person who has had an account banned.
On another note I don’t know why people are so shocked by this. FB owns it why wouldn’t they tie it with an account system that is already established. End of the day if you disagree with it just don’t buy FB’s product because it is their product they bought it from the original developers. Everyone has to make their own value choice for themselves. That's probably a big turn off for some people. That and losing access to games if you stop using/lose access to facebook. I'd probably go for a used Vive as well or possibly an Index. I bet there's a good deal of people who'll probably just hold onto the first gen quest rather than upgrading. Heck, it -may- make second hand 1st gen quests more expensive as a result since you aren't required to have facebook to use said device.

Literally the only mention of the massive privacy controversy was them saying "Facebook's VP said to have your account in good standing" "You don't have to go far to hear some strong opinions" and "the privacy ship sailed a long time ago". Like they didn't even mention that people who's accounts ARE in 'good standing' are still being perma banned, leading to their shiny new VR headsets becoming E-waste. I am majorly disappointed in Linus for barely even mentioning this whole mess.
Linus Tech Tips Playing Among Us ua-cam.com/video/-JiA_5Uu4Rc/v-deo.html
@@Traventine You don't get perma banned for linking up a Facebook account that's on good status. Heck I made a completely new account with nothing but my real name, address, email and phone number. That's it. No friends, no posts, not even a profile picture. Then I simply logged into my new Quest 2 with it and it's been fine ever since. As far as I know banned / blocked accounts were empty accounts mostly created before the person even had the Quest 2, so Facebook blocked them as bot accounts before they could use them. And even those cases have afterwards been reversed by contacting Facebook support (currently there's a waiting time ranging from days to weeks to get things sorted out though). There are ofc individual cases were proper accounts were blocked, but those are too rare to make any concrete conclusions from.
Also reports about banned account causing the VR headset to "effectively becoming e-waste" are just plain false. I know many sites reported that, but it was more just reporting frustrated vents from users without doing any research on the topic. You can get the account unblocked by contacting support. And even if you don't want to do that you can always just reset the headset and sell it off to someone else since it's not permanently locked to one account (you however have to do factory reset to switch account, like with any other Android device).
These things said, I don't like Facebook either. I don't use them for anything other than logging into my Quest and that's it. However what I like even less is spreading false information just because of negative bias held by the person. I'll keep mentioning the Facebook requirement whenever talking about Oculus. I'll keep reminding about user data harvesting, past controversies about data being used for targeted political advertising etc. But in the end it's up to every consumer to make the decision for themselves with the correct facts. And to be honest, most people outside IT-sector simply don't care about their data.
@@Niilomaan Very eloquently said. I admit that I am biased and haven't done much research into the topic. However, I stand by my belief that it is a very bad policy, and one that has very much deepened my dislike of Facebook as a corporation.

@@brandon_nope Hard to tell. FB said everything will work fine/account not getting banned if you "maintain the account normally" and that's where the problems start. Nobody really knows how this is meant/defined. Just using your Oculus HMD, buying stuff, adding VR friends, ... OR does it also mean you need to regularly log in on your FB account, read, make and share posts, add "normal" friends, ... Really sad this happened to the Oculus brand and ecosystem. It was really good how it was but it's clear what FB wants with Quest 2 and the whole strategy coming with it. It also explains why they don't block, but still don't prefer using one FB account with several headsets. They want one account/user per headset so more data is created that is directly linked with one person.
@@brandon_nope it’s, not just that I can’t make a Facebook account, it’s the principle of the thing. I don’t have any social media accounts (except UA-cam I guess) because I find social media to be pretty toxic and detrimental to it’s users. I don’t want to have to validate a company that I don’t support in order to play some cool games. I would also like to control my privacy at least a lil.
