if you watch the outtakes for that episode it took so many takes to get that shot I don't think they got a perfect one lol that's what makes the office so great imo
The way that Jim observes different moments and can't help laughing is TOTALLY in character for him lol. None of his moments felt unnatural or like they weren't intentionally done even
In the scene when David Wallace speaks to the office about the Michael Scott Paper Company, and Kevin says “hi” really late, you can see Idris Elba struggling to keep it together when the camera pans back to Wallace.
The Santa one is so fun y watching everyone busting out laughing. Mindy's face is so funny on that scene. I love it never fails to make me laugh at the comedic timing 😂
Mindy cracking up at Michael the Santa is hilarious. You can see the camera moves just enough to get her out of the shot while she is genuinely laughing, I wish they had kept her in it.
the break that always stands out to me with during the "Kevin, cookie" scene - Angela laughs and it's out of character for her, but they kept the take anyways.
On Office Ladies podcast, Jenna and Angela thought it was Paul breaking rather than Toby. But I agree, I can see Toby laughing at Michael in that moment too.
One of my favorite character breaks is when Dwight’s listing off all the fake medical conditions in the healthcare episode. When he says “hot dog fingers” Angela starts laughing and Brian/Kevin laughs at her laughing
@@Sana-hg8ow i guess that was the first season so the characters were not in their “final” form. eg you can say it by watching Angela being much softer for the whole season
I think the thing is that you can laugh in character and still actually think it’s funny enough to laugh at lmao. breaking can be incorporated into the scene if it works and at some point I’m not sure you can really call it breaking when the character is never actually broken.
Yeah that's just what I came here to say. I think a lot of these 'breaks' totally fit the characters in those moments - it's sometimes weird that in a scene of e.g. Michael being ridiculous that there's not more nervous/bewildered laughter from the characters
Yeah, Jim's role is very important because he's the most normal one (Pam too but specially Jim) there so he clashes with the others to keep the series from being ridiculous, so he's almost like the eye of the viewer. It's pretty brilliant and well thought. Though my favorite character is Creed for sure
That's actually one of my favourite breaks in the show because she's the sternest character of the lot and the camera swiftly panning away from her adds to it so much 😅
Toby laughing at Michael falling in the bathroom doesn't seem like a break. Pretty sure he was genuinely enjoying that as Michael constantly berates him.
Bro that was the only thing to happen in that clip, was Toby laughing at that. I'm pretty sure if that was him "breaking character" they wouldn't have put that clip in the episode lol
Phyllis cracking a smile when Toby says "you fell into a second fountain??" And the seminar attendees when Kevin is trying to pull it together after running so much. I know they're not part of the cast, but it still funny to watch.
Literally all of these were intended, the actors arent breaking, their characters are reacting to what happens, like Jim laughing at Michael's nonsense ; It's only normal for his character to laugh or show confusion when Michael says or does weird shit
When Michael says “you know how all… waitresses look alike” in A Benihana Christmas, Roy and Kevin start cracking up and it looks too legit for acting.
That's why this show is so good! You can literally see the *joy* at every corner. And Steve Carell beyond perfect as Michael Scott! Pam-Bam! Thank you M'am!
there's one where they're walking DeAngelo - who's in a medical/patient gown, back out of the office and "sneezes". john looks to the floor and holds back a laugh.
You missed the one where DeAngelo comes back from the hospital. Jim is walking with him and Will Ferrell is talking gibberish, which makes Jim lower his head to try to hide a smile, which he fails at, lol
My most favorite character break is when Jim throws a snowball at Dwight, and they both shake hands to challenge to a snowball fight, but then Jim doesn't let go of Dwight's hand, and Dwight is forced to pull it out. You can see people like Stanley and Phyllis hysterically laughing in the background.
The CPR class scene from the Stress Relief episodes, Andy is very clearly not trying to laugh at Michael when he starts singing "I Will Survive" instead of "Staying Alive" by the Bee Gees
One scene that everyone seems to have missed is when Dwight is getting his black belt in the office. David Wallace is the background looking confused as to why this happening in the office. Once scene you can see him crack a smile. When Dwight hands the scissors to his sensi the scissors you can see David Wallace in hysterics. then back to confused. This was definitely breaking character. ua-cam.com/video/oN5gFLK96Sg/v-deo.html
Honestly on most sitcoms I have no idea how they get anything done. I've done a lot of theater, mostly dry, old material. I'd break all the time with this material, and this talent
my favorite is when jim pops dwight’s exercise ball because it was supposed to slowly deflate and apparently would only pop like that if hit in a very specific spot, and in all the takes except that one it slowly deflated so you can see stanley looking shocked in the background and john quickly turn away so he doesn’t break on camera
I love these. Keep them coming (that’s what she said). The Carol Burnett Show was famous for breaking character. Watch the vid of Tim Conway as a dentist and Harvey Korman who can’t hold back his laughter.
No I think they were all just still fake laughing as characters in that scene (they all fake laughed out loud to wake Michael up so they could leave work early after forwarding the time on the clocks)
My Mom and I noticed the first one a couple weeks ago. I've seen the show 23 times and it wasn't until my Mom pointed it out on her first full-series binge that I saw that
In the Fun Run episode when they visit Meredith is in the hospital and Michael goes to hug her, you can see Angela beginning to break as he lays on top of Meredith but then the scene cuts.
The scene of Michael wearing the womans suit isn't breaking character. The scene was supposed to be the characters laughing at him for accidentally wearing the womans suit.
The one of Toby smiling when Michael falls in the bathroom I don’t think is a break. I think it’s just Toby being happy that Michael, the guy who hates him, is getting what Toby wants him to get.
A good one is when Dwight was talking to Jan about taking over as manager of the Scranton branch. He was cutting into his food without looking at it (only looking directly at Jan), and after he was done speaking, he went to take a bite and messed up, causing Melora Hardin to take a swig of her mug, while also hiding a smirk
