- www.operaphila.org -- On Saturday, October 30, 2010, the Opera Company of Philadelphia brought together over 650 choristers from 28 participating organizations to perform one of the Knight Foundation's "Random Acts of Culture" at Macy's in Center City Philadelphia. Accompanied by the Wanamaker Organ - the world's largest pipe organ - the OCP Chorus and throngs of singers from the community infiltrated the store as shoppers, and burst into a pop-up rendition of the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel's "Messiah" at 12 noon, to the delight of surprised shoppers. This event is one of 1,000 "Random Acts of Culture" to be funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation over the next three years. The initiative transports the classical arts out of the concert halls and opera houses and into our communities to enrich our everyday lives. To learn more about this program and view more events, visit www.randomactso.... The Opera Company thanks Macy's and the Friends of the Wanamaker Organ (www.wanamakeror...) for their partnership, as well as Organ Music Director Peter Conte and Fred Haas, accompanists; OCP Chorus Master Elizabeth Braden, conductor; and Sound Engineer James R. Stemke. For a complete list of participating choirs and more information, visit www.operaphila..... This event was planned to coincide with the first day of National Opera Week.

People…remember when there was joy and happiness at this time. Don’t let the darkness of politicians take away from our humanity and what really matters.
four years later and still crying.THIS is the good stuff!
ONLY IN PHILADELPHIA! Good job Philly! Well done and I pray this random act will continue.
For the Lord God Omnipotent God Reigneth! This song, and I do not know of many, that is TRULY dedicated, and orchestrated and done accordingly so TO GOD. To be SHOUTED so that it pierces heaven, and rumbles the ground underneath the angels' feet.
How many songs are for Christ, Mary and so forth compared to how many is for God? Hallelujah! Merry Christmas indeed! Merry Christmas to OUR GOD!
Amen
It's great how music ties all people together. No matter the nationality, it's what we all can share :)
I watch this year-round. Can’t wait for gathering to sing MESSIAH again one day! Love and peace to all!
I have sung this chorus many times with the APALACHICOLA BAY AREA CHORAL SOCIETY. And it still gives me goose bumbs big time whenever I hear it. You did a beautiful job. Wish I had been there to join in.
😭😭😭😭beautiful, ty for warming my heart so much. Again Glory to God in the Highest for King Jesus!!!
I am not religious, but I cannot comprehend how anyone can down-vote this. It is so moving. I challenge anyone to name a piece more worthy of a deity.
+jlee29170 2 percent of people downvoted this. Out of a hundred people, how many do you think would accidentally press the down button? Also, out of a hundred people, it's easy to imagine 1 or 2 people to be miserable little fucks no matter.
I know exactly how you feel
jlee29170 There is one religion in particular that would not only down vote this but would destroy all those that participated. They follow a pedo prophet and scream for the killing of all those who do not.
There are no atheists when listening to the Hallelujah chorus. Afterwards, sure. But during, I just don't think it's possible.
Your opinion is that of a sensitive, cultured person with good taste.
The Heaven's Proclaim God's Glory...the seven choirs of angels, each having a part with the clear result that His children, stopped to acknowledge He is King of Kings, and Lord o'er Lords. What a touching moment; indeed, Handel has a special place in Paradise for this song. It touches the heart and soul; the human and the devine forever more.
Thank you for sharing this experience.
Spectacular!!!
I will always remove my hat, stand to the playing of this, and sing with all my heart. No matter what.
I can not help but become all teary-eyed and emotional.....this is without a doubt, a moving piece of art.
thank you so much!
MCP
It must've felt like heaven for all of them! WOW!!!
I love this. People shopping and pursuing the material things they're told they need are being reminded, by this joyous, ethereal singing, what it is they REALLY need. It transcends traditional Christianity to touch the hearts of everybody, Christian or not, atheist or theist. No wonder it brings tears to people's eyes.
Tears to their eyes because of the song itself or tears of pain from the sheer volume of almost 700 people singing in the same room?
DeltaPhi79 Gonna go out on a limb and say the Wanamaker was still loudest... :D
SargNickFury The organ is pretty loud, yeah, but unless you're standing directly next to it, you can still understand people talking to you pretty easily. So the sound of that many people would probably be either on par with or a bit louder than the organ.
Now if it just had one of those 100' pressure pipes that the Boardwalk Hall organ has...
Hallelujah To Our King Jesus! Praise Him everywhere. So beautiful to see and hear this. We are indeed blessed in this country because of God and His Son, Our King.
A precious and staggeringly beautiful gift at Christmas. What lovely, lovely people.
I wish I'd been there singing. I wish I could share how thrilling it is to be among many people singing "The Halleluia Chorus".
In this world, we see so much anger, selfishness, and hate. I think it's wonderful that in this day and age there are still those who are willing to come together to share a brief shining moment of beauty with everyone. Well done!
Every year around Christmas time I watch this video again. It moves me every time again...so beautiful!!!
If you like this watch
Flashmob hallelujah mall
Better sound, will make you cry
Me Too Hans! Well said!
@@thebes50 Merry Christmas Hans I was there on this day as a happen stance and it took me back to my Christmas Junior Choir Concert at the F.H. LaGuardia H.S. of Music and Art now the H.S. of Preforming Arts in NYC. This video is a gift worth keeping and celebrating every year.
Hallelujah=Praise Jehovah!!!!
wonderful rendition. Handel's masterpiece!!
An amazing bit of heaven......gives you a little hope that God is still praised and accepted in our country somewhere.....
This is one of the most amazing and uplifting things I have EVER experienced. It was part of Greg Holders message on Saturday at the Crossing in Chesterfield. I DIDNT stand and felt so compelled to do that. I went back Sunday and stood and cried to Honor my Living Lord and Risen King and He will be King of Kings Forever and Ever Amen Hallelujah. I serve an amazing yet humble God. Thank you to the people who put this together...Random Act of Culture? For me an Act of expressive Worship!
Hear, hear!!
STILL, the most amazing, awesome flash mob EVER !! Puts me in the Christmas mode... and goosebumps for the glorious music :)
God knows this was wonderful to hear, especially that GREAT PIPE ORGAN rigning out Handel's masterpiece. Let's do it again folks
Thank you to the Opera Company of Philadelphia for the beautiful rendition of the "Hallelujah Chorus." It resonates with my soul and heart. Robert S.J. Hu November 27, 2018 .
Sorry - the screen is a little blurry now, so sorry for any mistakes. I have many renditions and heard many (and sung in choirs) of this. This is hands down my favorite. Just stunning and moving at the same time. And what a setting - one of the largest organs, great voices, super acoustics all rolled in together. Wish I was there to hear it in person!
Watch this every day to get your "natural high". Glorious. I was there and will never forget it. I sing with the Wayne Oratorio Society, in Wayne PA.
Just when I think Philly doesn't care anymore, I see this. Made me cry like a little girl too.
+Brock Landers Still crying, well into my seventies!
Me too! Love my city and our citizens. Will watch this forever and ever. Love the organ at Wanamaker's (I know it's Macy's now but forever Wanamaker's to me) and love to go at noon to hear it being played! Go Philly!
I am one of the singers in this video. It is hard to believe that it is 4 years ago that we did this. I'm saying here and now that this was one of the highlights of my life-long choral singing experience. Amazing!
***** Thanks so much! We had such a wonderful time!
Thank you! It must have been wonderful for you as well as those you were singing to!
Jane Myers Jane , it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The organ, (the largest operational organ in the world) and 600 voices singing this particular piece of music, just Amazing!
Wow- that sounds wonderful
Thank you. I never get tired of listening to this.
It made me cry behind my computer, It gives hope for the world when peolple sing together and share it with each other. That's why Angels sing in heaven, they are sending down the vibrations that make people do this kind of actions. I would haved liked to be there. Beautifull.
I cried so hard watching this. It's amazing.
This is such a wonderful overwhelming experience! What better way to get into the spirit of Christmas! Thank you!!!
And He shall reign for ever and and ever. Praise God. Beautiful music in the city of brotherly love
that was beautiful! :) Praise God! Thanks for posting this and thanks to the organisers!
Please can you do it again in 2021.........WE NEED TO HEAR IT.
Flashmobs like this always make me wonder who is originally in the flashmob, and who is just singing along to be a part of it. Love it.
Darn it, I always say I won't cry whenever I hear this, but I do. I always do.
Fantastic! Wonderful voices and moment!
Makes me cry every time I see this video. Just think... the choruses of Angels in Heaven that will sing when we are called to assembly as the scripture describes.
I can *almost* imagine how incredible it sounded live. Well done, Opera Company of Philadelphia and Macy's!
This video is such a wonderful blessing! Let all the earth praise Him!
I tears up every time I watch this video. So beautiful! Hallelujah!!! Goodness, I wish I was there!!! @OperaPhiladelphia PLEASE consider bring back Random Acts of Culture in 2020!!!
Upon hearing the opening to this I stood and sang- in my own kitchen! I'd LOVE to be in a place where this would happen. I'd sing my ass off!!
Amen & Amen...watching this is one of the highlights of my Christmas. I can't watch it enough.
Surprise! Who knew that average-looking person beside me could sing so well! Loved it!
When I get Home, I hope my Creator will give me a voice to sing His praises.
Brought me tears of joy. Again.
Dear God! Sometimes I think we might just make it.
God will see that we make it!
Amen!
@@websurfin9575 Yes!
Sometimes you can think of God. sometimes you feel Him. When you sing even a few notes of this, for sure you are breathing God.
* arrives with good tidings *
Even better than the mall flash mob! Especially since there are more singers and the world's second largest pipe organ with multiple voices accompanying them! This the best Hallelujah flash mob on UA-cam!
This should live year round inside our hearts. Not just a couple times a year. Burning on the altar of our souls.
Oh, how I would like this to happen in the midst of the madness of Black Friday. Wouldn't this lighten the mood on that day?
That is the greatest idea in the history of retail
Awesome and powerful! This is how a song that glorifies Jesus Christ should be sung! Well done
Oh how sweet this is! Sitting in my office eyes tearing from start to finish!
damn sopranoes back at it again with those high notes
Bah Humbug to those who don't love this. I listen to this frequently as it makes me feel wonderful! The spirit of this recording, besides the song itself, is what's important. Perfection is not a requirement.
God Bless those who spread the joy of Christ and Christmas!
What a great organ.
I wept all the way through that - amazing - so blessed
Me too Janine!
TRULY, ONE OF THE GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN. HALLELUJAH TO THE SAVIOR!
ABSOLUTELY GLORIUSLY SUPERB INDEED!!!!
LOVED IT IMMENSELY!!!
GREAT STUFF!!
WELL! DONE!!
WISH I WAS THERE AT THE TIME!!!
THANKS FOR THE POSTING.
This is amazing. It touches me to heart an I get tears in my eyes every time I see this video!
AWESOME!!! Thank you so much for sharing this with the world!!!
This is really terrific! Incredible organ, fantastic voices, heavenly song. What a wonderful experience. Yes, folks - scripture prophesies that one day "Every knee SHALL bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord." Can't wait.
WOW FANTASTIC NOW LETS KEEP THIS GOING AS WE ENTER 2015 *********
My friend Billy, who, as a result of previous injuries was a heroine addict saw & heard this and said in tears, "Just when you're ready to give up on society, they go and do this!" (Billy passed away in July of 2019).
Very very good... To Jesus be the glory
Truly wished I was there! Love from Sweden
I think it's just AMAZING to get this many people to sing ANYTHING in unison... outside a church...
I always wonder when I see these -- how many of the people singing are actually part of the flash mob, and how many are just random people who have sung the song before, know their part and join in! I know I would do that! This is one of my absolute favorite songs!
I know one of the folks who was part of OCP, participated in this, but I agree with you, I sing soprano and know the voice part of this chorus enough I would have joined in ☺. Isn't it cool, though, that so many voices were raised?
+Scott Van Aartsen I always sing my bass line every time I hear this song!!!!!
Imagine if something as simple as a song could bring so many people of different race and cultures together ....oh! It did
could bring christians and muslims together? hehe
No mater the time of year this is one of the greatest pieces of music to sing or listen to.
It is amazing music proclaiming an amazing Lord Jesus Christ who gives eternal life.
***** No, not forced. It is your choice. It is your gift to receive if YOU choose. That is freewill and that is true love.
*****
P.S. He loves North Korea and its people so much.
P.P.S. He loves you immensely too. Even if you don't believe it. Even if you don't believe He exists, He loves you all the same. *So much so that He gives you a free and independent mind to CHOOSE for yourself.* Is that not wonderful?
***** There are lots of old books. Why did that one have such a profound and lasting effect on the world?
***** 100 years later the Roman empire was gone, but that one book lasted through the dark ages and all kinds of other things. Better think that answer through again.
Dean Schulze Because it is the Word of God, giving us the Gospel (good news) of Jesus Christ and salvation through Him. No other book comes close. Every psalm sings of Him; every book of the Old Testament speaks of Him and the wonderful mercy God has shown us through giving us His only begotten Son. Oh, how we all can find love and peace in Him - and nowhere else!
Absolutely Wonderful !! King of Kings and Lord of Lords !! That is what Jesus Christ is !!
This song is great at Christmas, but it is great ANYTIME!!!! He REIGNS!!!
TheGrimDoctor, that's your choice....but you'll have to accept His Lordship one day! Then, you'll wish He reigned in you...(Phil 2:9-11) Good luck.
I always come back to this particular video! It has a special quality that can’t be matched! Praise be to God! Merry Christmas everyone ❤️
Drift to sleep on the wings of this glorious sound and give thanks to God Almighty for the many blessings of this life….
Thank you, Western culture, for all the beautiful things you have done. Someday, future civilizations will study you and wonder why you voluntarily committed suicide when you had so many things going for you.
+Thomas Seibold Well said, Thomas.
+Thomas Seibold I so wish your comment was not potentially so accurate. Such beauty, and such waste. Each time I hear of another orchestra or opera company or Public Broadcasting station begging for money, and then can't find anything to hear or view because nearly channel has a "sports" event smothered in incomprehensibly vast sums of money, I weep. Thank you for your remark.
+Thomas Seibold probably Obama
(and yes that's a joke)
This may be one of the best comments I have ever read.
Really fantastic. Most moving piece that I have listened to throughut my life. But there are other cultures in the world too that are fantastic as well. Why spoil this one with such a bigoted remark?
How could U not be moved by this!!!!!! AMAZING HE WILL Reign 4 ever and ever!!!
Probably the best song ever written. I love singing it.
This beats what the world saw of the USA on Black Friday.
+Michael Doyle Amen brother. It's so disgusting to see those vids on the news. It's embarrassing.
Michael Doyle and it only got worse on black Friday 2016
O America - I love You! Thank you very much for this great vid - God bless You all !
This is absolutely beautiful. To those who are not religious, or not even Christian - no need to be - just enjoy the voices, the harmony and the spirit. To hear this piece sung with the singers spread around as they were and still have it sound cohesive is a tribute to all participants. God Bless You All. You did HIM proud. Merry Christmas!!
Please, please, PLEASE come to New York! That brought tears to my eyes!
Psalm 117:1; "Praise the LORD, all you nations; extol him, all you peoples." Romans 15:10b-11; "Rejoice, you Gentiles, with his people." And again, "Praise the Lord, all you Gentiles; let all the peoples extol him." Deuteronomy 32:43; "Rejoice, you nations, with his people, for he will... make atonement for his land and people." Revelation 19:1b; "the roar of a great multitude in heaven shouting: 'Hallelujah!'" It doesn't get much better than this! Great post.
And there are more since that time. You are a mighty warrior of God. My hat goes off to you. I saw your replies to those bitter and ignorant, depraved minds that speak against God and His Love. Thank you for being a voice of reason. Praise Jesus! :D
There are so few things to hear that compare to the Wanamaker Organ and you cap that with a Hallelujah chorus and the King of Kings is truly glorified right there in the public eye. I can't not cry every time I hear this.
TRULY MAJESTIC! INDEED, "HE" SHALL REIGN FOREVER AND EVER!
Why am I drawn to experience this over and over? It seems that my soul yearns to be reminded of all that is beautiful and excellent and worthy of praise. Is this not how it was intended from the beginning? Truly, a Random Act of Worship.
I sung this for 3 yrs in HS and conducted it in college.
When Handle a German was given English Citizenship by the King was one of the highest honors.
Many are not aware that the King of England stood for the Chorus and all in the great hall saw him and that is why it is tradition to Stand for this most sound heavenly piece of music a mere mortal wrote with His aide.
Thank you Mr. Handle and thanks to all of the great and gifted composers and musicians then and now.

What I have to say here is this: If there is a god which I do believe there is as in Christ and what he says in that bible is good in that in the end when you die if you have lived a good life and followed him and being saved by grace through faith, you'll see eternal life of peace and happiness with no pain or sorrow. Now that to me is a darn good deal. So how could anyone not like that ? Its a wonderful ending after we die. You cannot fault perfection and that's what we've been offered.
Hallelujah!...for sure!! Truly warms my heart to see this..wish I would have experienced when we were in Philly last year!
I'll never get tired of this.
The old Wanamaker organ that I've loved since childhood. I could almost tolerate the Handel Messiah again.
The largest fully operational pipe organ in the world resides in Macy’s Philadelphia store, formerly Wanamaker’s. This organ is so huge that a crew of men work full time keeping it playing perfectly and in tune.
I know this had been around for a long time. But I am in awe every time I see. Wouldn't it be awesome to be in the mall at that time!!!
This gave me chills and brought me to tears!!!! Thank you for this random act of culture...it is such a blessing!
My feel good start to the holiday season each year. Brings me to tears every time!
i JUST ABSOLUTELTY LOVE THE IDEA OF SINGING LIKE THIS IN A HUGE ORGANIZED FASHION.KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK...GOD BLESS AND MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL......GUS -DET ,MI
With all the magnificence of that former John Wanamaker Store is, accompanied by the grandest pipe organ ever, I believe this is what Mr. Wanamaker had in mind for his store.
This brought tears to my eyes, Praise God, our country is not all lost
If I was they're at the time, I wouldn't care that I wasn't a part of any of those groups. I would have song along with everybody and enjoyed myself!
FANTASTIC BROUGHT TEARS OF JOY BRINGS A SENSE OF REALITY OF THE WONDERS OF MANKIND THANK YOU
Brought tears to my eyes. Touching......
