I know the yacht club well I grew up there, learnt to sail optimist there. This vessel would of stood out like a mega yacht, it would be unusually super luxurious. If they headed to a busier marina with more similar yachts it would of blended in more.

Renting your boat out is perfectly normal, many people do it to assist with the cost of them. I did it for a year. Cheers to the sailors of the world and a grand cheers to the finders.
very common in Croatia with the probably highest density of sailing boat / rentals world wide. Great area for sailing. We did it a couple of times beginning October when the tourist masses have left and it's mostly sailing boats cruising the Dalmatian islands like the Kornati. Water is still warm then, weather often summery still.
So... boat makers could/should get ~50 RFID chips, all with one code, and bury them in the fibreglass as the boat is being made. A simple RFID scanner would then identify the boat in particular. It would be hard to remove them without making a mess. And/or, add microdots to the fibreglass, so they can be dug out, cleaned, and viewed in a microscope, similar to "explosive taggants" used to identify the origin of explosive blocks. Just make it hard to remove the identifiers.

Only the purchaser of the yacht would know it and they aren't going to be spreading that info around. Also the range of an RFID chips is usually less than 1 meter most usually 10 centimeters. Imagine trying to scan an entire 50 plus foot yacht for them. Now imagine a 40 meter yacht with them all over the place. To remove them they'd have to pretty much scrap the boat.
A great story with a happy ending, well done on the report - first I heard about it. Just as a footnote I really dislike the term superyacht when the vessel is not a grotesque display of wealth. I understand it drives traffic from would-be millionaires but for those of us into sailing who are chartering similar sized yachts with friends there's not much luxury about sailing them.
This seems to be organized group from Russia. They knew what they were doing, they knew how. They've picked a new boat in charter program probably, because any new electronics wouldn't be installed. Even if hidden tracker was in, I suspect, they would be able to find it. I know, that I'm going to be branded as russophobe here, but always double, triple, quadruple check russians. Production pleasure vessels have a hidden HIN (Hull Identification Number) which if the actual HIN had been altered would have helped the authorities in positively identifying the boat.
In Europe the kicker is if the boat has been used for illicit activities like drug running . The boat can still be impounded even if the boat had been leased out on holiday charter.
There are traveling boat crews that move boats sailing or motor. I talked with a guy that is the captain of a crew while on a plane here in the USA. His last boat was a sailboat that was new from South Africa to Northeast USA.

Looks like a backup gps location system that has its own power supply and needs to be "deliberately" shut off every couple of weeks so it doesn't activate randomly seems to be a good idea.
Owners need to leave some air tags hidden around the boat. It's almost certain that someone with an iPhone will be on the boat at some point. So the AIS is irrelevant.
Why was it a long shot to find the boat? I could see the problems with getting it back with the new paperwork but it is kind of hard to hide a big boat.

You wonder why expensive yachts like this are not fitted with a simple GPS/GSM tracking device. The one for my cat cost only €30. All vessels have to come close to shore at some point.

Seems like a tough row to hoe, trying to hide the identity of an expensive sailing yacht. Yacht manufacturers don't exactly churn them out like automobiles, each one is one of a few dozen made that year. Not to mention the violence to the actual owners inherent in taking their expensive property by force. A bad crime.

We should never trust any of our governments but most people are wonderful…spent time in Russia back in the 80’s…amazed at the appreciation for the arts…loved the ballet , opera , winter palace and the people were so kind with old world manners….never trust the reports we read always trust people

Whatever the case, it's ugly as hell, reminiscent of very late 19th century and early 20th century warships, which were no beauties. FMD.

If it was my boat, I'd install my own tracker. Always have a fail-safe.
