If you are thinking "low carb" here is my experience. I eat 100ish carbs a day. I stink at counting calories and carbs so I just stay aware of portion size. I allow myself only one portion of carb foods. If something is super high in carbs I follow the "3 bite rule". I enjoy 3 bites of that cheesecake only. After 3 bites you are not eating for taste but just ..because it's there. I also eat with "intention". I think about my food and enjoy it. No mindless eating. I also eat with a spirit of thankfulness to God for providing my food. Once you cut back on carbs you stop craving the empty carbs...physically and emotionally. The benefits have been rewarding. I have lost weight. My joints are alot less stiff. My blood sugar has dropped from the 130 's to 103. I have more energy. Now I notice that I "crave" food that makes me feel good. I can really "feel" the difference in my body when I eat foods that help vs hurt my health.

I have been on the Virta program for a little over a year. I have been a type 2 diabetic for 14 years. Since going on this program I have gone off insulin in addition to major reductions in blood pressure. My last A1C was 5.4. I have also lost 79 pounds now. Once you get used to the low carbs you feel so much better.

Cutting carbs in half might have been easier the first week. Great idea! I started 16/8 intermittent fasting 5 weeks ago, avoiding sugar, bread, grains, potatoes and junk food. My sugar cravings disappeared in two days, which helped. I’ve unnecessarily beat myself up over a slice of pizza and an avocado and tomato sandwich on one slice of bread 😉 I’ve lost 15lbs (10 water) and I feel much better!

I also eat about 80 grams carb per day. I make sure they are low glycemic ones. I first keto adapted for a while so my body was trained to use fat as fuel more efficiently. I like to do some intermittent fasts too.

Being an advanced weightlifter I can't do keto long term due to loss of muscle glycogen which hampers performance. I do a carb cycling diet in which I have low, medium & high carb days. Low day - 50 grams. Medium - 100 grams. High - 150 grams. I've gotten leaner but can maintain muscle glycogen with 2 high carb days. Works great for my particular needs.

Back in July/2019, I was uncomfortable with my weight. Following your advice back then I decided to go low carb and give it a try, with IF 16-8. I didn't want to give up vegetables and fruits, I like them to much and I figured the nutrients derived from them would be more beneficial for my age, 60 years old. My goal was to lose 2 - 3 ilbs. per month patiently. Well 18 months later I've reached my goal and maintaining. feeling like I can date to 30 year olds.😃 Thanks, ❤ your smile.

I appreciate this informative video :)
I generally eat a fairly phytonutrient dense, whole food, low carb diet, less than 100g carbs/day, no refined carbs. I eat little fruit, some berries, and i stay away from sweeteners except a little stevia. I do IF fasting, basically 16/8, sometimes more fasting, sometimes less.
My question is about healthy fat intake with low carb diet. I generally follow guideline of eating less fat content in meals where I eat more carbohydrates.
I am trying to heal high blood sugar, insulin resistance, high triglycerides, fatty liver, lose fat from belly/thighs, autoimmune conditions, et cetera. Basically, I was a stressed, below poverty level income, single mom for 20 years. I am no more than 25 pounds overweight and 56 yrs young ;), but I feel like I must have a stubborn metabolism. I usually walk 3 times week for 45 min and do some chi gong/ yoga once per week.
For about a year I followed a healthy keto diet.. But found I was always stressed about food choices and was craving carbohydrates, I kept my carbs to under 30 g/day.
I thank you, very much, for any insight or advice you may have for me.

I always love how you pack just the right kind of info. in a nutshell. I'm not sure if your 21 day challenges would work for me. Weight loss is only an issue for me in way of loosing to much. Slim and always have been. I actually need to gain weight. What's new in life is; I think, is food sensitivity (example: Avocados & its oil) and just not feeling right? My no carb and mainly carnivore diet has been driven by not feeling my best. Recently; I feel the low to no carb diet may have a negative result. Yet to find the sweet spot - still struggling. Muscle loss seems to have kicked in. Activity/exercise and the lack of I think may be a big factor? Too much caffeine seems to make me hostile. Caffeine; I found (caught myself), to be a natural Go To compensation for low energy. Body confusion is the best way to express what going on.

    • @Riosgirl98
      @Riosgirl98 4 роки тому

My dad has the same issue, he loses too much fat so I told him up his fat intake.
He now takes double the oil in his salads or over roast veggies.
I make him a dessert which is basically just whipped cream with almond butter added.
He is doing great now so I thunk it's about getting some quality fats in.
Good luck on finding your sweet spot for health!! 💚

Dr. HARVEY created the original eating plan for his patient William Banting, 1862. Woodyatt created the ketogenic diet in 1922. For me, I don't feel well on straight keto. I prefer low carb, like you Dr. Becky. 50-80 carbs, but have not been able to get the last 25 lbs off with it. Keto is a great tool to immediately help lower triglycerides I cut mine from 176 to 85 in 3 months healthy keto. I lost 20 lbs but expeeienced lots of digestive issues with the fat metabolism of straight keto , in order to lower them. Thanks.

Very nice presentation, also everyone needs to read the ingredient list on everything you buy. The label may say Keto friendly, however the truth may be otherwise based on the ingredient list. Low carb is the way to go, so many benefits with no drawbacks, hard to start, easy to stay on once you are fat adapted.

I'm sort of in the same boat. Alot of experimenting with a glucose meter is required to see what and how much of something you can eat w/o spiking your blood glucose above 30 - 35 points. Thank you for this easy to understand information. Timely for me as I am 4 days into low carb eating. I just want to lose a few pounds as has been creeping up on me and I want to enjoy Christmas lol (in moderation). It’s also vanity as my waistbands have become a little tighter and having a significant birthday coming up soon, I want to feel my best 😀. I have done low carb before a few years ago (Dukan) and found it to be very effective but I like your explanation of just cutting carbs not completely eliminating them. And getting them through healthy vegetables and fruit. I basically wanted to reset my eating habits, and after feeling light headed and tired on day 2, I’m now feeling great and have minimal cravings....4 lbs down! Thank you so much. Helen

Do we produce ketones if on a low carb diet? Seems most keto channels suggest it's keto or nothing and any carb intake, such as a cheat day, will totally ruin the diet and you are starting from scratch. I'd like to follow low carb but enjoy the benefits of mental clarity (which I did notice immensely when I was keto).

Hi Doctor! Am I still allowed to have sautéed vegetables like artichokes and green flatbeans (more than 100g) if I'm doing keto (low carb)? Or do I need to have total carb under 100g/day? Thank you ❤️🙏

Thanks for this. Noticed that with reduced activity during the lockdown I have a bit of gain around the middle. I am older , 6 ft tall and 177 lbs so im not over the top and if anything, during non lockdown times, I have trouble keeping weight on. But as I get older I want to maintain good blood sugar levels so I am shooting for up to 100 grams of carbs, 100 grams of protein, and 150 grams of fat for around a 2200 calorie diet. Been at it for a bit over a week, and I must have been snacking more that I thought before because I am fighting a bit of hunger while I try to get this sorted out. I will watch my weight. I may need to up the calories once the gyms open. I dont want to lose muscle mass, but want abs showing. Does it sound as though I am on the right track? Thanks.

hi doc, you talked about conversion of fatty acids into ketones. Is this conversion done within seconds, or does it takes minutes or longer ?

Keto diet dehydrates you, you lose glycogen and water weight at start. Other than that losing weight is about how much calories you are consuming. Tell her to eat like normal human, not like a lion.

I think counting carbs and fats is too difficult. 😅 I can't check ketones. I try to eat as low carb as possible and I lost 19 kg so far. My metabolism is very slow, but losing weight slowly is what my doctor suggested. But I need alot of different veggies. And berries. I'm a pescatarian. Carnivore sounds insane. You can never get the nutrient you need that way.

I thought dairy, seeds and nuts were low carb and encouraged on a keto diet?

You are correct. All those foods are perfectly acceptable on the Keto diet. Some varieties are higher in carbs, so you have to choose wisely, but most of these foods are keto-friendly.

Mji, By chance were you referring to Becky addressing 'No Carb Diets' (aka Carnivore)? That is the section where she discusses avoiding these foods (6:46). It is the most strict form in removing carbs.

I wish I could get a continuous glucose monitor. You have to have a doctor's prescription and I think it's costly. That way you can find out which kinds of foods actually do spike your insulin.
