This was the flight home from Texas after the latest set of recordings for the "In The Hangar" show. The weather was beautiful for the entire flight. A highlight was spotting two B-2 bombers climbing out of Whiteman Air Force Base, too far away for the cameras to pick them up well but nice to see for Beckey and me.
Here in South India, sunday afternoon, nice and sunny with a few thunderclouds in the distance. On an armchair, safe from the virus here at home. Ans watching Martin fly home! What more can anyone ask for! Safe flight, Martin and Becky, wherever you fly.
I truly enjoy your UA-cam Channel. Having lost my medical now at age 67, this is the only joy I can experience. I am specifically amazed with the leap of the Avionics Technology. I’ve always flown Steam Gages and would have enjoyed the transition to these highly advanced technology enhancement. Keep it up Please.
I'm planning on flying a Mooney Ovation from Carroll, IA (CIN) to Dallas Love next week. Great video showing me what to expect going in and out for the first time. Very helpful.
Hah! I used that line on my daughter about the sunglasses and the pack of cigarettes to describe our heritage journey we will be taking on the way to ACCA in July. Plan on visiting Iowa City and Conesville to the southeast a few miles, where some ancestors resided. Then on to ACCA at Rock Falls. My daughter was worried I had taken up smoking as that comment about the cigarettes went over her head until I explained it to her. Also have a project to take care of in Lake Zurich on the north of Chicago. Still deciding if we will make it to Oshkosh. Been enjoying spring type weather in Houston since early March.
Have enjoyed following your flights for quite some time. Though I've never 'responded', you've always earned my 'like'.. As a USA retired and 'service connected disabled', my 'escape' is through your videos and that of others. I've several thousand hours in a multitude of aircraft on my FSX Flight Simulator. It keeps my mind working while I do the actual flight planning... Looking forward to many more 'possibilities' you provide for my 'sim' experiences! Thank you for all your efforts to publish this side of your life in aviation! I spent 12yrs in your native country as a surveyor for the US Military. I've seen a lot 1st hand and now you are doing the 'reciprical'... Gute Reise und Viel Spass!
Vielen Dank! 😁 Always happy to see comments from viewers here, so thanks for leaving one. Would this (DAL-CID) be a flight you replay in the sim, or what kind of sim flying do you do? Herzliche Grüsse! - Martin
Thanks for the great videos, Martin. Always enjoy watching them and they have helped me stay mentally current and able to enjoy the flights while my vintage Bonanza has been down for an extended time for an engine/prop overhaul, annual, and some other upgrades. I especially appreciate your positive, friendly, and professional personality.
Nice flight Martin. Great that Becky has enough interest to ask questions and follow ATC reports. Bet you are glad to be home, hope you enjoyed your Texas stay. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing, Martin! I miss flying in the Metroplex! Took my father over KDFW in a Cessna 150 on our way to Mesquite from Fort Worth Alliance. What a thrill! Stay safe!
Beckey is so funny. We definitely need more flights with her onboard. She also needs her own Halo headset or Clarity Aloft. I bet she's not a fan of the headset hairdo after a long flight. Ha.
Another great vid! I was wondering why you kept pushing for a descent and then at 30:17 I figured out why. Then all I heard was the wind picking up as you probably dropped everything you could on the plane to dive and keep your airspeed in check😊. If you ever get the answer as to why they handle the incoming traffic that way I would love to hear it.
Martin, I really enjoy your videos. But I do have a comment/question. At 1:47, did you say “I’ll switch tanks before takeoff”? You’ve already started, taxied and did a run up one one tank that apparently is giving good fuel flow and before takeoff you’re going to switch to a different tank that MAY have a problem. Or did I not understand your comment?
OK, I watched the rest of the video and see that you switched tanks at your run up before a long taxi to the runway which gives enough time to confirm both tanks are good. Next time I’ll watch the complete video before posting any comments.
Good question (and I saw your comment on your own comment). I don't believe there is an absolute best way of doing this, but I do see value in exercising both tanks for a few minutes each before taking off. And by switching after the run-up, I know that each tank can deliver fuel at a higher rate than idle - testing one side during the run-up, and the other during the early take-off roll. Add to that the fact that I switched to the tank for take-off a couple of minutes BEFORE take-off (as you mentioned in your second comment), and I think that is about as much checking as I can do. Best regards, Martin
Martin, thanks for another great video. What headset are you wearing? I notice Beckey is in what look like Bose A20’s, which I use in my airplane. But I am curious if what you are wearing may be better? I’m always looking for the best in all things aviation. Thanks again!
@@lasmackdown2024 I'm 6'3", and I have no problem sitting in a Bonanza or Baron. And if your first attempt to fit seems a bit snug, you can play with the seat (lean it back a bit), or - if it's your own - even re-upholster the seat with a thinner cushion. Though I did not have to do that to fit. The Halo headset does help with headroom, too. - Martin
Don't know how I've missed all these videos? I really enjoy them all. It's like being back home again.. Plus, your videos are good examples of IFR procedures, when I can't fly myself. PS: I liked the little peck on the shoulder for a good landing. My wife usually says, "Well, that was interesting." (-:
Hey Martin. Do you normally file for the anticipated SID knowing that you will generally just get vectored to eventually go on course? I noticed you never were routed to any TEXOMA.NINE waypoint. My experiences are generally the same.
Hey George. Yes, I file a SID if I expect one will be issued. And the vectoring in lieu of own navigation on the SID is very common in my experience - the published SID is probably more a lost-comm thing. - Martin
That's a service that comes with the highest tier of Foreflight subscriptions, Andy. It also includes the digital IFR clearance via text message at the largest airports (that part didn't work on this flight). - Martin
@@martinpauly To add to that, PDC (Pre-Departure Clearance) needs to be activated by ForeFlight for your tail number. No cost, other than the top tier of FF.
@@martinpauly thanks Martin..... it is theoretically nice ....but you have to run up anyhow.... and I imagine it is hard not to double check the text, especially with feisty weather .... 1 hour or significant change and all that.... plus if the weather is benign ... no bigey either way...... a nice idea though
If you find yourself in super busy airspace (I'm talking more like TEB), you can shorten up your clearances and all read backs a little bit to save you and everyone else some time. Just more like "Cleared via zero seven zero, radar vectors, Texoma nine, Tulsa, direct. three thousand, niner thousand in ten. Twenty-four three, thirty sixty-four, seven zero tango bravo". Controllers who are really busy will respect the brevity. I've even noticed controllers who aren't busy will appreciate it and you can tell by the tone of their voice change after speaking with you. However, you do what you are comfortable with. Absolutely nothing wrong with the way you did it, just maybe a helpful tip that will make things smoother. Controllers only really care about the important information. I never had one say I need more of a read back as long as I hit all of those restrictions, altitudes and freqs. Just like the guy that got corrected by the controller about "at or below". That was a restriction he didn't read back.
Good comment, Craig. I am used to somewhat more verbose readbacks, which are typical in areas which are not quite so busy. But I see the advantage you point out, and I'll try to be a bit more concise at those places in the future. Thanks for the suggestion. - Martin

The departure controller from Love was crazy busy! It was mesmerizing just listening to him conduct his symphony. Beautiful work.
Yes, rapid fire radio calls on this flight. Would be interesting to know what that feels like for a controller.
