Doug's superior knowledge coupled with his speaking style/voice make him a fantastic story teller. I'm positive that if he started a channel talking about aviation history and the planes it would be a huge success. Thank you Martin for bringing him on your channel. But I miss having more of your videos. They are also fantastic.

Fantastic video and airplane. Thanks for sharing. A small quibble. The original Mr. Mulligan was built at Fairfax Airport in Kansas City, Kansas, not Missouri. It was built in the abandoned American Eagle Aircraft factory that had been closed during the Depression. Fairfax was also home to Rearwin Aircraft, Inland Sport, Porterfield, and a little known company named Mercury Aircraft. Up until recently you could see the Mercury name on a building on the south side of the airport. The company was financed in the glory days after Lindbergh's flight, but died after the market crash of 1929. When I was growing up in KCK in the sixties the old American Eagle factory, which was across the street from the airport, was a mattress manufacturing plant. Had a chance to speak to Harold Neumann several times. The prototype of a true gentleman.
Great video. I was lucky, Harold Neumann was one of my aviation mentors. I have many Harold stories, he was a character. I shared a hangar with Harold in the '80's at OJC.
I saw that plane fly a couple times back in the 80's at Airventure and it surprises you with its speed. You are accustomed to looking at big round engine planes that kind of lumber along like a Stearman or Waco and then this thing comes along and just blazes by.
I have climbed Mt. Evans in Colorado at just a little over 14000 feet and remember the feeling of the thin air. I can't imagine going to FL210 in an aircraft without oxygen. Those boys are lucky they didn't kill themselves. What a remarkable story and what a beautiful aircraft to see and listen to.
