A Texas legend covering another Texas legend showing that psychedelic garage punk classics never go out of style!
I remember watching this first run, my senior year. I was mesmerized by them. I was especially mesmerized by Doug Sahm, and his singing and dancing. I broke out my brother's KILT AM albums from the late 60s he'd left behind after he got married. I found SDQ's Mendocino, She's About a Mover, and 13 Floor Elevators' You're Gonna Miss Me and Splash Pt.1. I became a fan of Texas garage psychedelic rock from then on. I love SDQ's version of this song!
He was a genius performer (and writer, and arranger, and collaborator ....solo, with The Quintet, with the Texas Tornados...) I fell in love with his style when I was in college and found "Sir Douglas Quintet's Greatest Hits" in a record store, but didn't have a turntable at the time ... the guy who worked in the store made a cassette for me to listen to in my car and charged me $7 .... best $7 I ever spent.
legend covering legend. RIP doug and roky.
Fantastic performance of an amazing song! Wish I saw these guys live.
Thank you for watching Garson!
boy this is fire, well done doug
My grandpa is the drummer
That's exciting!
Your grandpa rules
A grandson of Johnny Perez wow what a surprise. Are you also in music? I saw grandpa once live in a perfomance in Rotterdam Netherlands in 1981. Later other drummers took over.
All the best, Texton from Holland
Ol Doug could cut quite a rug when he was young!
Doug Sahm was age 39 when this was shot in early 1981. Pretty spry for an aging music vet. Augie Meyers on the Vox organ would team up with Doug about 8 years from this in the Texas Tornados (along with Flaco Jimenez and Freddie Fender). Though the 13th Floor Elevators version of this song from 1966 is the definitive one, Roky Erickson also recorded it in 1965 with his first band The Spades, which you can hear here: ua-cam.com/video/c9piNUYzhQ0/v-deo.html
good tip! Thanks.
Great lineup with Speedy and Louis
I actually like this performance but the version from the where the pyramid meets the eye is really great.
13th Floor Elevators going up....Roky Ericson wants on, please.
The SDQ'S appearance isn't on the "Best of Fridays"set. Publishing hassles , maybe? X is'nt on there , either. Apart from that , I enjoyed it very much.
Roky Erickson done halfway decent.
Well, it sure ain't The 13 Floor Elevators with Roky Erickson.
No, but it’s brilliant Texas musicians that knew them paying tribute to them.
Kramer in drag LOL
Doug Sahm could perform any style of music-- he was phenomenal! What was in that weed he smoked anyway?
Doesn’t Louie look like a Mexican Bob Dylan?
Looks like hes having a personalality crisis the new york dolls
I never watched Fridays - ho was the drag queen? She could've danced when Doug and the boys played "She's About A Mover." Showbiz is full of such missed opportunities...
That drag queen was Michael Richards, who went on to fame and fortune as Kramer on Seinfeld.
