- Brief interview by Hef with Doug Sahm, followed by live performance of "Mendocino". Show #25 taped 25 January 1969, also featuring Mort Sahl and Michael Caine. Originally aired 19 July 1969 on WOR-9, New York City, and 15 August 1969 on KTLA-5, Los Angeles.
Class. Real Class. This song has really stood the test of time. They were just superb. RIP Doug. Beautiful soul
Did Hugh Hefner steal your favorite Porno Mag or something. RIP Mr. Sahm AND Hugh Hefner.
Was so great to see beautiful Sharon Tate there laughing smiling dancing and having a wonderful time. This is the way I prefer to remember her.
Oh my God, yeah. Just spotted her. Her fate was so tragic and the spooky thing is she died around my birth date and I'm spookily attracted to this video. RIP Sharon. 🤲🙏🙏
@@annakelman6627 I understand what you mean about the attraction to the video.
I thought I saw her but I wasn’t sure. Nice to have confirmation. Too bad this song wasn’t in the Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood soundtrack; it would have fit right in.
@@mretrain I remember when this show was on television many years ago, in my hometown it was late night weekends. There is an episode but I don't remember which one, where Sharon is there with Roman and they're sitting on a sofa with Hugh Hefner and he's interviewing them. I remember well when Mendocino was very popular on the radio. I still love the song.
Can you imagine dancing with Sharon Tate! Man!
This clip is a treasure.
41 likes and 0 dislikes..........it's a great song by a great band, how can anyone dislike this? Cheers!!!!!
41 dislikes are Democrats.
Needs more Mendocinoudity.
@@eddiesaninocencio6635 No, it's the Trumpublicans that don't like Doug and the Hippies !
A song so great if he named it Newark, New Jersey, it would still have been a hit !
this song never fails to make me happy. and this is a great clip. they rocked with a Texas Mex groove.love it thank you.
Great song! And Barbi Benton in the background!
I AGREE, AND SHE HAD THE PREREQUISITE MOVES
What a great song by The Sir Douglas Quintet. Shows how Doug Sahm could write a great song with just two chords.
This sounds so much like the record I picked up in a bargain bin long ago that it is hard to believe it isn't a lip-sync. The distorted lead vocal, the muddy mix, the "spontaneous" remarks, all match what I remember from the record.
You YOUNG GUYS y’all will never ever hear that kind of sound and Texas music anymore. God bless the Texas Toronto’s.
TexasTornados not Torontos
Texas Tornadoes
Oh gosh look at the people so happy ..
Sir Douglas quite 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Very small production room.
What a terrific clip. This brings back many memories about that era. I love seeing the Afros, the huge sideburns, the hilarious dance steps. Reminds me I'm a man out of my time! When I saw Hef wiggling with Barbi Benton I laughed OUT LOUD! Worth its weight in gold! Hard to believe that's the same Doug Sahm who was in the Texas Tornados, though. Looks like two completely different people!
I just retired from Southwest Airlines (pilot) - not once leaving or coming into the Bay Area from the North (over Mendocino) did I not sing this song to myself. Somethin' 'bout it..
Far out!! I remember seeing this on playboy after dark! And I was only 10 years old!! My sister had the album.
My God, Barbie Benton was so effing cute!
Disco Stu's dancing is way over the top man!
I love this song!
I'm from Minnesota and I love Mendocino🦄😎🦄❤it💛it💚it✌👍👍
Augie Meyers on keyboards. A legend.
Love the organ
I had a beer with Augie Meyers in Laughlin, Nevada many years ago. A wonderful gentleman
@@markthompson7727 Very cool.
I bought one of his albums
All legends here
V well boys. Good work. Thank you.
Hef really knew how to throw a party.
Playboy After Dark, lots of groovy, beautiful people, digging the sounds of the Sir Douglas Quintet, what is better? I love this video, lots of love and cosmic vibrations to all you mystical wizards and unicorns out there 🎉🌶️💕🎊🎉
Women knew how to groove to rock music back in those days!
Great video!! Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome, Cheryl! Any relation to Doug?
Daughter In Law :)
Nice!
Cheryl Sahm I've been looking for the documentary about Doug. Do you know anything about that? Merry Christmas
Awesome THE GOOD TIMES !
This guy was so cool! great band!
You rock - I thank you for both the video & the block
OMG .. Jan 1969 I was waiting for word that I was excepted into the Military ... I was 17 years old and I remember this song well
I went into the USAF 2 months later. Liked the song too!
this is why i love youtube. it doesn't get much better. doug sahm was a genius and its such a goof to see him on this show!! play it augie! watch hef and barbie benton getting down!
Wow immer wieder toll.
Man, those “chicks” are feelin’ it. And Hugh is a great dancer.
Mendesino è una canzone del mio tempo. Ci tengo di risentirla con gli ospiti che ballano filmato vecchio, che mi ricorda i miei tempi. Mendesino, è stata una conzone di successo, e sono entusiasta di rcordarlo a tutti.
That was a real STAR.
Outstanding!
Beautiful voice!!!
A good song selection for a wedding reception.
I was 8 years old when I first heard this song, I was dancing to it then as I am now, my olderst brother was sooo cool and he turned me on to great music, Is that Disco Stu from The Simpsons dancing with Jesse Asshole Jackson? Any hoo great video, thank you for sharing
This is when Amerika was sane!
And free!
Never quite sane, but kinda easy riding or tripping. Do you dig it? Lol
Yeah I dig it. Yes, your summation is more accurate, but I also dig "John Lennon"s sentiment too (ya think he's any relation ?)
@@forestsoceansmusic i met an English fellow named John Lennon during a study course in Ipswich Qld in 1990. Might be a common name in the UK.
Yeah, probably is a common name. Are you still in Qld?
Probably the best 2-chords song ever!
Yeppers 👍
As a newbie fan of Doug Sahm/Sir Douglas Quintet, I just have to say that this clip is, like, really groovy and out of sight. Can you dig it?
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame LEGENDS 2023.
shit man he was young..great one.
Andres de Urdaneta and Miguel Legaspi left from Barra de Navidad Jalisco for the Philippines, but they didn't know how to return to Mexico.
The return voyage was made by Andres de Urdaneta and Felipe de Salcedo going to the north first and turn around of what is now kwon as the town of Mendocino California(named after Antonio de Mendoza) and then coming to south straight to Acapulco.
That's the story of Mendocino foundation.
Take me back!
8 Months BEFORE Woodstock! Amazing
WOW!
What a cool party to have attended. That's a really young Barbie Benton next to Heff.
Sind halt unwiederbringlich songs😂😂❤❤
It doesn’t get any cooler than this
Hef and Barbie Benton (@ .10 sec)...a time capsule. Loving it.
American women (White and Black) of 1969 = prettier, thinner, and richer than now. For folks who like to get it on, it has been all downhill since '69........
Immer wieder gern gehört. Einfach nur toll
to bboucharde: Yeah, you're probably right, although in Australia, the 'downhill' didn't start til 1974 (but there were still lovely exceptions right up til 2010).
Richer???????????
The only time you'll ever see Jesse Jackson dancing with Howard Stern..
Yes. Hef and his show were lame in so many ways in the effort to be hip, but credit where credit is due: great band, and black and white people happily partying together while George Wallace, Lester Maddox, Jesse Helms, and the rest of the KKK were still in the ascendant. Thanks for that, Hef.
Love Doug
I gotta dig out my love beads!
My 1st Covers Song - in my first band - The Staff 1982 Austin Texas :)
Part of the late 1960s/early 1970s look was SIDEBURNS ! ! And Doug had a magnificent pair - when they were THIS big, they were referred to as "Muttonchops." It wouldn't be safe to try to pull that look off, these days - those damn cheeky Millennials might try to light them on fire or something.
Barbie was such a doll.‼️ The guys were really trying hard to dance ~ Hugh was.crazy in love with Barbie ❣️
Very Groovy
Time machine, set coordinates:
If that,s would be posibble that should be
I'm in.
After dark alright, well I was in grade school, believe the local stations would complete the broadcasting day and play national anthem.
Always loved this song. One minor issue - there is no park per se in Mendocino. Headlands along the ocean, yes, but no park.
Lol....I love the groovy lyrics!😊
Apparently Atwood Allen’s harmony vocal on the chorus was done behind a curtain because he wouldn’t wear the approved wardrobe!
Makes what they call"music" of today even shittier.…what a badass song.... And Barbie Benton could really dance !!
Watching them dance at 3.0 reminded me of the movie"I love you Alice B Toklas"Barbi Benton was "hip'The older men tried to be "hip"but yet they were so"Un-Hip"!
+Jeff Mayo OH..I forgot to mention the grease in Hugh's hair. That is so "un-hip"Bad Hugh !
Ab Minute 3:07 taucht Atze Schröder auf, ich hab ihn entdeckt, er ist es in einem Video von 1969 bei den Partygästen. Er rockt voll ab bei Mendocino. Knaller !!!
Plenty of pretty girls (and handsome guys) and the ability to drink and smoke and not be vilified for it. I sure miss these days.
The cool non destructive Hank
AN AUDIENCE OF 60'S PLAYBOY PLAYMATES?. I RATHER BE THERE THAN MENDOCINO !!!.
All us OkieMexicNs luv u Sir Douglas. Only kickback music that can get us to fight or make love to.
Did they actually go to Mendocino ?
Doug did (with a lady from their record company, apparently) but he wrote the song while living down near Salinas.
Jerry Wexler said Doug Sahm was the best all around musician he ever heard.
Saw them at the Bottom line they were Great.
HEF COULDN'T DANCE A LICK BUT HE SURE DIDN'T MIND MAKING A FOOL OF HIMSELF TRYING !
All the young women didn't mind his dancing style in bed. Not one of them young women were below a 10.
Is that Freddie Fender (Morin )?
Anthony Crute no
Barbi Benton was only a teenager then.
A teenage girl of 18 where 18 is the magic number where a teenage girl is legal and able to show it all in Playboy.
+bax323 Still soooooooooo cute!! She has aged very well , indeed!
+bax323 OMG ..Hugh was no dummynor blind !
ok, so that IS barbi benton.
bax323 Yeah I guess an 18 year old Barbi Benton can be considered a teenager.
Barbie Benton Wow
Sounds like the, Mavericks.
That's my question too. Who is the bass player? Did you ever get an answer?
Yes my name is Jimmy Stallings the bass player on Mendocino I'm also known as J J Light who had the number one tune in Europe in the same year as Doug and us had at the same time. Heya was my song It was a Navajo chant that I wrote back then. Love Jimmy Stallings.
Hugh Hefner was not always cool.and our world still beats. I do like this song.
Barbie Benton!
Ok that’s a Gibson f-hole he’s playing looks like an ES175 but it’s not anyone know the model ?
The one dude can dance like Tom Jones!!
J avis 2 ans. ?????????
Barbie gettin it on
All these years later, he's greater than ever! Nobody could sing like Doug Sahm.
It is his voice that make this song "Madocino" so good!
@@wimnoe9486 Mendocino
The consummate frontman.
Never forget, Doug Sahm..💜⚘☀️
Never seen Augie look so cool and Barbie is cute as a button. The best compilation of the group is the CD collection called "The Complete Mercury Recordings", if you can find a copy. The odd fact is "She's About a Mover" was recorded on London Records. "The Best Of Sir Douglas Quintet" is easily affordable on eBay.
A very Happy 84th Birthday to Flaco Jimenez. Leonardo Jiménez March 11, 1939 San Antonio, Texas. Founding member of Sir Douglas Quintet and the Texas Tornados. Winner of multiple Grammy's and other awards.
A legend in Tejano music. Many, many more Flaco...
WHY SKINNY ??
Flaco was not a part of the Sir Douglas Quintet.
When I finally got to Mendocino this song played in my head constantly. Good memories.
Thanks for all those beautiful vibrations Sir Doug. We miss you.
Great to see and hear this video. What a great time that was back then
What a great time to be alive and experience that scene .
These songs always take me to places I like going to, thank you Doug.
Amazing how easy Doug and the band made it look to be this good! And how groovy an atmosphere that Hef created its no wonder everyone had a great time. The vibes of the 60's thankfully live on with the music which I make sure to listen to often to keep that feeling alive in my life. The plastic programmed music most producted today is mind numbing rather than uplifting and enlightening like the music of the 60's!!!
Well stated
"how groovy an atmosphere that Hef created its no wonder everyone had a great time". Jeezus, you're naive.
i love sir douglas.but barbi benton dancing with hugh is priceless!!!
i still have her centerfold!!
That band was just incredibly cool.
Doug Sham had that x factor of true warmth and talent. this is really great.
My teenie bopper, My teenage lover.
Oh what a time when people were not so uptight like today.
TODAY,S PEOPLE ARE LOOKING LIKE ZOMBIES!
@@jgmdewilde8078 They might not know good music, but today's young people can surely tell you if something is racist or not! 😆
No one today could write a song like that if their life depended on it!
True that
God is that the truth!
Sure they can. Happens all the time. It just doesn't get promoted like the schlock that gets so heavily promoted today.
I saw Doug perform many times at various venues in Austin. There was a magical night when Doug wasn't performing we shared some beers and smoke at Soap Creek Beer Garden @Academy Drive. and plenty of "after-party". He was a true Texas Legend and kind soul in every way.
That is awesome
I was following Doug around Austin at that time also. His shows were always a kickass party! Dance floor was jam-packed, beer was flowing, and if you weren't having a good time that was your own damn fault!
Sir Douglas Quintet... avec "Mendocino" en 1969, que de très bons souvenirs... Cette mélodie a quelque chose de spécial... Merci encore au dépositaire.
Qui la musique aujourd, hui est tres mauvais!
you can see Michael Caine and Barbi Benton in the background
Well spotted!
If you need a good chuckle, find videos of all the Michael Caine impersonations. Amusing. Barbie Benton is still fine!
