3:00 Just a little correction: Worms are characterized by their ability to spread without user interaction, if you have to download it and run it yourself, it's a trojan.
Also a virus is a program that injects itself into (infects) preexisting files. It's not an umbrella term covering all bad software, that would be malware.

After 35 years on the Internet I can honestly say I've never run into a virus that caused me problems like my few experiences with main stream anti-virus software has.
I actually remember Grandma having a type of Bakasoftware.
They told her to upgrade and she went over and contacted the dude(who was Russian, like in the vid), and she was all like "nup, I'm not gonna upgrade, I need to pick my grandaughter up for school!" and hung up the phone.
She eventually got the problem solved and got a wonderful antivirus protection thing. So it all worked out in the end I guess

the cool thing about cryptolocker is that well meaning white hats ended up distributing the encryption keys so anyone that was infected and had no means to pay the ransom could eventually get their files back.
Code red kind of is similar to the MSET exploit for homebrew on the DS/3DS family. It makes an entry point by spamming loads of characters, more than the pc can handle which then gives access to other parts. This is ALSO how Cubic Ninja turned into a homebrew app.

Or one of those desktop puzzle viruses which disable any type of shutting it down and hardresetting resulting in the malucious registrykey just running again on start-up, so that you can only get rid of it by solving the puzzle :p (I know I'm evil...)

I had a variant of CryptoLocker called CryptoWall on my previous PC. I ended up having to fully wipe my entire hard drive, losing countless game saves and most importantly all of my pictures from a trip to Paris, my first time abroad without family. Always back up your files to a separate storage device!

You may want to look in to cloud storage or other off site storage as well... Fires can always happen and that like.
Yeah cloud/off site's definitely a good idea. I'm on a new PC and I'm a lot more careful now but you never know what'll happen.

Solid advice Sam Hull. I would suggest if you very concerned about having a good back up get a External Hard Drive the " Cloud" is vulnerable. If you can Get yourself an External HD and store it physically.

Back in the early 1990's, I was working at a school computer lab. The computer was infected with the virus known as "Printer Panic." This virus activated when you queued up a document to print. While the document was printing, it would make the document print over and over again, and completely erase your hard drive and floppies while doing it. I lost a very important essay I was supposed to turn in the next day due to this.

There was time here in Israel, back in the days when virus updates came on floppies mailed to you once a month, when one or two AV companies would have their programs release a virus into your system if you stopped buying the updates. I don't remember if they suffered any legal consequences

Linux can get viruses, of course, but much like the Mac OS had a lower virus rate for a long time, it isn't used as much and thus not targeted as often. It doesn't mean you're invulnerable, just less appealing.

But it may also check whether they have a russian IP, or if their windows was installed as russian. It might run lots of checks before infecting and if only one turns positive it would not infect. That's the safest way to not get caught.

@@Mia-ln1zs Stuxnet does a MITM attack at SCADA level (it places itself between the centrifuge and the hardware itself) and messes with the diagnostic sensors readings; so no. There's no way to circumvent it using proprietary software. And even if every single piece of hardware and software is custom-made, we're talking about an intelligence work. Not your average virus made by someone inside a basement on Buttfuck, Russia.
If Iran have access to such hardware/software, so does the CIA.
I hate ransom-wear. And as such I keep a separate hard-drive that I diconect from the internet, scan my whole computer then transfer the data over.

Those aren't actually viruses. They're just shitty little websites that exploit chrome dialog boxes. There's a special place in hell for the people that run them.

+SubscribeToSyndicate If you are using Microsoft Edge and one of those pop up you are fucked because the dialog box cannot be closed as it keeps popping up so if you close the browser it loads up on the same page again and again, the only to fix it is to open and close it using task manager about 10 times until it breaks the cache to load the page.
+RacingCart - RC Playz Edge has a "prevent page from creating further dialog boxes" option.

1.just unplug your ethernet cord from the router when your done using your desktop.not from the desktop itself. it will wear down the connections on the ethernet port on your desktop

4. boot time scan with avast periodically
5. dont be a dumbass on the internet.

do all these things to increase life expectancy of your pc

I always thought that BIOS chip is responsible to check the parts at startup and give the control to OS after that. It is true that you can't boot a PC with broken BIOS but it doesn't serve to connect all the devices - this is responsibility of the varios busses
Yeah it makes me a little bit angry that he is misinforming people like that. The bios typically handles startup, does a POST-check and loads the bootstrapper, which then in multiple stages loads the operating system kernel that handles not only all of the I/O but also all software-hardware interaction.
You forgot to mention that the Chernobyl virus(aka CIH) was created by the that guy as challenge to antivirus software companies claims about how good their software is. The guy that wrote the virus also helped a ton with the cleanup and was actually a really smart guy. CIH is probably one of my favorite viruses. I'm glad you put it on this one. If you wanna see an actual computer get destroyed by CIH watch the video by danooct1.

Actually, MEMZ trojan virus, made as a Viewer Made Malware for danooct1 has became very popular and it started to spread quite vastly, mostly as part of intentionally harmless prank (that turned out to be unintentionally devastating). Kids happen to install this virus in school computers, office workers tried to prank their co-workers with this virus, and of course it has done damage in home computers as well (simply trolling dad or brother using a computer)...
Yea, it might be meant as a joke, but it actually turns out to be quite harmful and devastating. It's like lighting a forrest and watch the blaze spread far for fun...

For sure some ransomware does not "lock" and "unlock" your data btw. I run hundred of ransomware on virutal machine now, and roughly 35% of them actually keeps the files there, the less will corrupt all or simply delete... That's also my least favorite virus.

I got a computer a few years ago, it's broken now, but I'm almost 100% sure there was atleast 1 virus on there. It was slow, and it was just weird- Now I have a chromebook. Starting to become more grateful it doesn't allow me to download stuff from the internet.

This actually reminds me of what happened to my Comp Sci Academy. Somebody downloaded an trojan horse anti-virus they had on their flashdrive, which then proceeded to load up over 500 viruses.
That computer was out of commission the rest of the year.

Virus - piece of executable code that spreads and attaches to other executable code within a machine, usually does not exist alone.
Malware - this is the actual general designation for malicious code, that is viruses, worms (executable code that autonomously spreads via networks, be it LAN or Internet) and trojans (pretend-genuine or actually useful programs that hide malicious code intentionally added, rarely viral or worms). If the term "grayware" is also used, then malware is code that directly harms the computer, i.e. destabilizes the system, deletes/encrypts files (therefore ransomware is still malware) or trashes the machine.
Grayware (optional) - the occasionally used designation for programs that aren't as harmful as what is unambiguously malware, such as adware (including browser hijackers), joke programs and spyware. I don't use this term and classify "grayware" as just a variety of malware. When a grayware-loaded cracked game from Skidrow gives you something that ends up autonomously moving the mouse and changing magnification in browsers, that's not "gray" anymore.
tl;dr Worms, adware, spyware and trojans are not viruses. You're looking for the term "malware" - the actual general term for malicious code. I just hate hearing someone use "virus" as a general term.

Who is the idiot here? Worms, trojans etc. are not types of viruses, even if some viruses are also worms (e.g. Magistr). They're _types of malware._ As I said, viruses are a _specific type of malware_ - they attach themselves to other executable code, spread by finding programs to infect and copying themselves to the programs and usually don't spread via networks by themselves. Most worms (malware that uses exploits to move over networks autonomously) and trojans (programs intentionally bundled with usually non-spreading malware that pretend to be benign) are not viruses because most worms are standalone executables and trojans, even if they somehow somewhat spread, have both the mask and the malware written by the same person while viruses use other programs.
