I have read Mr. BURLNGAMES “an American marriage “two times. So rich so full of unbelievable facts backed up by great sources. I learned so much! I would gladly read it a third time.
Though I value many of his insights, I take Burlingame with a grain of salt. He has always had a strong dislike for Mary and turns to William Herndon (who outright hated Mary) for many, many references. IMH, other Lincoln historians and writers such as Jason Emerson are far less biased and worth reading first. Daniel Epstein's book "The Lincolns" remains my favorite because it is also highly informative, less biased and presents the story of the marriage without making Mary a villain.
Incompetent “scholarship” infused with misogynistic prejudice and petty mindedness. Mary Todd Lincoln’s volatility was undeniably driven by mental illness and loss of her sons.
Am a woman: did read his book, do believe Mary WAS that difficult. Anyone who has experienced insecure women (OR men) who bully others knows it's POSSIBLE for those innumerable instances of historical RECORDS of reports regarding Mary being selfish to be TRUTHFUL. Power or control centered, image concerned people often want this sort of thing in history to be covered up, hushed up, because they want to believe people don't dare report how THEY treat others... that History will never bring to light how THEY were while alive.
Jaqueline Kennedy, widow of President John F Kennedy, was a loved admired copied lauded -- her life waa quite similar to Mary Lincolns: deaths of 3 children, miscarriages, assassination of their husbands by gun shots to the head while they were sitting next to their husband. Too, Mrs Kennedy enjoyed fine, coture, expensive clothing, as well as taking on the project of cleaning up and decorating the White House. JfK s publicist would put out media blurbs that said JFK was unhappy with her clothes spending, as well as her decoration of the White House, though those monies waa not from the Kennedy bank account. So. Two women, 100 years aparr, serving as First Lady without salary, -- and being publicly chastised for their penchant for clothing which byw they wore while "on the job" doing their First Lady events. If youre a first lady its imperative that you look good, are dressed well. Its expected. If either Mary or Jacqueline showed up in practical cotton housedresses. the presidents and the government would be terribly unhappy, angry that they werent representing our country properly.

As a life long student of Lincoln , I must say this interview was well researched and excellent

Why does that guy keep smacking his lips
ikr! It's annoying and kept distracting me from his thoughts.

Not a balanced view of Mary Todd Lincoln. Instead, you are partaking of the gossip and sensationalism of their day.

I would listen but I can't handle the lip smacking
I'm glad I never did buy his book. Unbalanced.
From what ive heard of the srriage there is no doubt he was devoted to mary.
When does history become useless gossip? there is no clear answer to that.
I don’t think MT had it in her too pull herself. Regardless if she wanted too.
Trash history
That smacking is annoying
Will do better next time. Thanks for the comment
