One of Zorn’s most beloved and unique 21st century ensembles, the Gnostic Trio features the distinctive guitar of Bill Frisell, the vibraphone of Kenny Wollesen and the ethereal harp stylings of Carol Emanuel. The sounds are soulful and heavenly and for this, their seventh cd together, they perform 9 tunes from the Book Beri’ah, the last book of music completing the Masada legacy. Frisell’s magical sonorities dance around harp and vibraphone creating a heavenly improvisational counterpoint. Truly music of the angels, Netzach is a gem.

for me, this is the most interesting/inspired john zorn project, yet i can't tell which, if any, record by this trio lineup i should choose, were I to get one. perhaps he could boxset these projects and nice price it so I could. but no. the world doesn't revolve around me. isn't it remarkable that the composer of these themes/tunes of stillness is the same as naked city? sometimes people do evolve for the better, perhaps. and now...i shall evolve into print-silence and just listen.

it's gas, judging by tzadik, that zorn has brought this group together with gyan riley. i remember seeing the gyan riley trio play in dublin and it (also) sounded inspired, in a unique kind of way, but that trio hasn't been on record. riley's drummer on that occasion, chad smith i think he was called, i could imagine workin in a zorn setting. i remember the cd i picked up at the concert was a solo guitar one rather than a band/trio one: food for the bearded.
