I saw them at Clemson University way back in 86 or 87. I think 10,000 Maniacs opened for them. We missed the opening and left halfway through the concert to go back to dorm room to drink beer with our dates. Wish I could go back to that time. Clemson was only couple hours from Athens, and I never made the trip there to see the wonderful bands that came out of the area during the 80s. :(

I was an REM diehard in high school, but by the time this song came out I was in a terribly abusive relationship that left me homeless and pregnant. At that time, i had lost my love for music and the hope of a better life. I just discovered this song a few days ago and can't get it out of my head. Thanks for staying right here REM, thanks for all the songs!

I just remembered this great song again, as I was leaving New York today, after 7 great days with a friend. The sadness I felt is perfectly captured in this song.
This song literally summed up my feelings leaving New York back in 2005. Heart break and after 4 years living there and loving the city and the USA left heart broken and empty back to the uk. It took me years to get over that. This song aired I think when I left and I felt it was just for me. I broke down in tears.
Melancholic melody .........with the beauty thats eternal .....voice you would come across only once a Lifetime ....no matter how many lifetimes you d live.....
To this day, as a New Yorker born and raised in this city, I still play this song each time I fly out knowing I'm leaving NYC behind. The lyric, "... leaving New York, never easy I saw the light fading out..." holds true as one realizes all the grit and glamour this city had in the past just isn't there anymore in the present.
Idk what it is about REM that I love sooo much! Part of it is all my major life events they're a part of. One of the biggest is when my GF (now my loving wife) bought me tickets for their last tour!! We had great seats and I've never been so happy and never cried from being so happy!! As soon as they started playing, I had the biggest smile, chills running through me, filled with such gratitude and love! This was one of the things that convinced me that she was the one!
When REM were new, I guess that I was put off by songs like 'Shiney Happy People' that didn't really do it for me. That was then. Now it's 2020 and I find myself discovering them for, what seems, the first time. Now I find so many of their songs move me and I 'discover' real gem like this and listen to it for several months or more before I 'discover' another. Timeless classics. Thank you REM.
It really is the hardest. Getting a taxi to Newark or JFK.. sitting in the back of the cab with tears streaming down your face. Going through the gate, take off. Staring out of the plane’s window at what became your home.. dazzling you to your core. All of your best friends are there.. your dates and passions, your dreams. The plane climbs higher and soon you stretch to see even the last glimpse of NYC. Then you are there, finally alone on a plane away from the friends that became your family.. knowing what they have planned for that evening and their lives.. You tell yourself that it’s alright and that you can always return... but knowing that just even leaving is too much to bear. Nothing will compare and you know it. You really do know it. I ♥️NYC
Today I left NY and I’m back in Spain. I spent a week in NY during my trip through the east coast. I have a strange feeling inside, close to anxiety: I feel like going back to the chaos, noise and wonderful people of NY. Hearing that, I remember All those tall buildings, All those beautiful woman faces, the surrealistic and Hollywood -like situations… Oh, NY, so deep in my heart…
An amazing song... one of my favourites... the bridge that starts at 2:56 just gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. and that line easier to leave than to be left behind resonates with me.

4.02 / 4.29 : I would like my life to look like exactly like that... That blue light, the cool talking between friendly people... And what a beautiful song... I listen to REM since 1990 and I'm pretty convinced it was the best american rock band from its first record to its final... The poetry of the lyrics, the amazing voice of Michael Stipe, and SO MANY damn good songs, year after year... Thank you from the bottom of my heart REM ! :)

Gord could say more in one sentence than most song-writers in an entire song. I love them both. It's allowed.
@@rogermurray8553 Try listening to them. REALLY listen to them. And the reason they didn't have the listenership of REM is because they are totally Canadian. Canadian lyrics, references and they every song they did was different and they did NOT have a genre. Yes, the two bands always reminded me of each other in these ways; non-commercial, willing to be themselves, brave, moving and dancing like no one is looking, writing and talking about what no one else is, and lyrics that are genius. Gord could say more in one sentence than most song-writers in an entire song. I love them both. The HIp didn't care about universality, nor were they even worried about what people thought or how they rated them. They were Canadians and life was fine with them. They didn't write to appeal to the rest of the world. But it doesn't make their music any less great There was never a band like them as far as working together, their love for each other, and their absolute loyalty and brotherhood to each other. The rest of the band worked with Gord like they were part of him. Of course every band has huge differences or they would be the same band. But I find similarities I can admire and love. I don't find the Hip "lesser."
Leaving New York is a very cool song! !!! And Rem is also one of the best bands in the world
Gabi, da hast du recht.😊
an underrated great song from the later years.
Well put
too bad you can't find this stuff in stores at the mall. I recommend Soundgarden in Baltimore for a store with good variety if you can find it and if it still exists.
Not underrated at all. Everyone thinks it's a great song
@@stephen1562 Well, the stats tell a different story, I'm afraid. Hardly 2 m views... I'm not surprised they called it quits, a great band like this cannot exchange for such minor successes, you know? And Leaving New York is a beauty. I know you're going to say it doesn't matter, the fanbase still love it etc., but that's just not enough.
@@krzysztofmilewski4742
I'm afraid, like many, you're falling into the trap of confusing "underrated" and "not popular". They are two different things altogether.
OMG this song is so wonderful!!
Just like you.xxx
Yeah
Beautiful
Loved REM since forever, this song is so under rated.
By who???
this song is lifting the quality of my life. 'I love you, I love you, I love you' Fantastic
Out of their entire catalog, "Leaving New York" is my all-time favorite R.E.M. song, followed closely by "Texarkana".
Bad Day, stands up against anything they did.
Along with Finest Worksong and What's the Frequency.
The One I Love... the song the whole worldwide success Story started with.

It's difficult to say which song by REM is my favorite, but damn, this one comes close!
It’s incredible the memories that pop up when REM plays. The Voice, lyrics, mood, fantastic - so glad I had my youth with this band, thank you 🥰🙏🏻 appreciation from Denmark 🇩🇰
What an amazing heartfelt song, it means more to me than I could ever say
Don't ask me if I'm here in 2024 ,.I never left ❤️🤟🎼🎼
We don't need to ask......we see you, hello
😊 totally 😊
Gran grupo REM. Saludos desde Colombia
What can you say. REM is the best American band in history hands down!
Hmmm.....or is it the Eagles? Very close.
hello Linkin Park!!
linkin park are good but its doesn't compare to REM by a longshot

Nulla è a caso, tutto perfetto.
the maturity and sonic complexity reached by the rem in this song has few equals in the history of contemporary music. exceptional video for poetry, thought, narration.
🥲
This song makes me feel sad but a beautiful song just listening to Michael's voice it's just amazing 💞💞
I’m moving from NYC next week. Been there since I was a teen, now in my 30s. This song hits me in the feels. I’ll be back one day.
Did you go back?
Their songs become more meaningful as I age (I'm 39 now). I'm not talking about the lyrics' meaning, but rather how the song's rhythm makes me feel.
At 55 it’s like a weighted blanket but nice
The best city in the States. The best band in the World. Such beautiful worlds so whats not to like. Take care everyone Ax
This song plays on repeat in my head daily. I'm 46. I grew up in Buffalo (not even NYC) I live in Puerto Rico and love my life ❤❤❤❤❤
Actually this song leaves me speechless, such a beautiful haunting classic.😳
Melancholic melody .........with the beauty thats eternal .....voice you would come across only once a Lifetime ....no matter how many lifetimes you d live.....
I don't do languages, but can say that Stanstead Airport is very efficient, but not very close to London. Best get a train to Liverpool Street.
Yes, you don't do languages...
Davvero bellissima canzone, hai ragione!
"It's easier to leave, than to be left behind.."
I love Michael, and REM.
So beautiful... Saw them for the last time at Rock Werchter Belgium in 2008. Love this song. Please come back! ❤
This song is 1 reason why im thankful for great writers and artists of music ...👍
I've never been to New York, hope to go someday, but this song reminds me how hard it is to leave Seoul, my true home.
Seoul is too amazing to leave it behind.
@martachalas6660 true, but I had to, last year, after 6 amazing months.

Tune. My home town. Thanks~~~

Is it me, or did REM songs become more and more melancholy as the years went by ?...
Had the pleasure of seeing these guys four times; Sheffield and old trafford , England , legends, any one else there?
'i love you i love you i love you, for ever', the ultimative songtext. fantastic and beautiful.
Omg this song is so good. It deserves more views and likes
Just love this song, long time fan of REM but this is personal for me…
yes
it hits differently when it's personal
When REM were new, I guess that I was put off by songs like 'Shiney Happy People' that didn't really do it for me. That was then. Now it's 2020 and I find myself discovering them for, what seems, the first time. Now I find so many of their songs move me and I 'discover' real gem like this and listen to it for several months or more before I 'discover' another. Timeless classics. Thank you REM.
i love this so much. it makes me emotional all the times!!!

Sitting in JFK airport with a glass of wine before flying to the UK. It doesn't age.
Right? You can’t help but feel a stinging pain when you leave New York. Experienced it today.
Just left NY, still never easy. Have been loving this song since 2004
An amazing song... one of my favourites... the bridge that starts at 2:56 just gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. and that line easier to leave than to be left behind resonates with me.
This is a great song and I think REM is an exceptional band. As years go by, I seem to forget these songs but they are in my mind. whenever I hear their songs on the radio they strike me as the first time I listened to them.
This band has so many great songs. They kinda don't even have to try (at least that's how it seems). When you're this good, it's seemingly effortless. They should release another album.
they disbanded (obvi) & michael stopes said "we will never reunite"
Beautiful harmonies as always with REM.
It's very difficult to choose but I think this is my absolute favorite R.E.M song
