'Don't let the sun catch you crying"......that is a fantastic song/vocal performance by Gerry.
Ferry cross rhe mercy is my favorite. Love Gerry and the Pacemakers.
Having spent European nights in the Kop at Anfield with my Dad, who typically isn't a very emotionally available guy, on those nights something just changes and we sing and we laugh and the problems, they just fade away. This is Liverpool Football Club. This Means More.
I just love the British Invasion music .. and Gerry & the Pacemakers was a big part of it. Thank you, Beth for reviewing this classic.

BETH BETH BETH ? Where is the wonderful accompanying Official Video showing the people of Liverpool in all their different creeds and colours? :)
Tu eres mi sorpresa hermosa pelirroja 💙
Gerry's voice on each and every song was so likeable with a nice bounce on the fast songs. Pitch was right on and he had such a breezy confidence in his singing. Missed.
This was a football song for me long before I was aware of the musical origin. Decades before in fact, though I associate it more with Celtic than Liverpool since I grew up in Scotland.
A Liverpool football crowd singing this was sampled by Pink Floyd in their beautiful "Fearless" - a song about solitude, overcoming shyness or inhibitions, and the individual vs the group.
In the song Fearless by Pink Floyd, you can hear the Liverpool fans singing what has become a stadium anthem in England. It's quite thrilling!
Hi Beth, enjoyed listening to your comments - Gerry has one of the best voices I have heard - I love the clarity and tone of his voice and his accent ….. plus he looks gorgeous here! 😁
Always liked Gerry and the Pacemakers. Fun band elevated by Gerry's vocals. Occasionally, when I want to smile, I watch their live performance in the movie "The T.A.M.I. Show", where they perform a few of their greatest hits, complete with sweat and screaming fans and a huge grin on Gerry's face. You KNOW he was in the moment and having fun. About a year before his passing in early 2021, a white haired Gerry surprised fans by coming on stage and singing "You'll Never..." at Anfield Stadium. It was quite a moment and would turn out be his final performance. He was a showman to the end. The video is on YT. Great guy....the kind of guy you feel like you know...
Ive been a reds fan since 1979, no song means more to me than this. Sung in unison with 50000+ is incomparable and heartbreaking for so many reasons. jft97. YNWA.❤❤
Been listening to Gerry Marsden and the Pacemakers for almost 60 years. Ferry ... Don't let the Sun... and this one takes me back to my teenage years. Never thinking I'd grow old...lol. Now more than ever my grandkids are helping me walk (accident). They hold my hand and I know I'll never walk alone. 💕
Howdy from Houston 🤠
My mother was given this record as a child by her foster parents, as she was getting ready to move to a new foster family.
She loved this song her entire life.
My father was a huge Liverpool fan, and this song would be played at family parties and events.
It was played at both of their funerals.
As a family we have sung it at Anfield, at parties at funerals and celebrations.
To me it’s a very powerful and emotional song, that simply spells out, just keep going, you are not on your own.
A song that is not only evocative of the 60s but also emotional, as the song progresses it drives hope and togetherness through to your very soul, I have witnessed it at football grounds, family gatherings and even Karaoke where everyone always joins in on the chorus, simple brilliant.
I have always associated this sing with the movie Carousel. It is a wonderful song that offers hope to those who going through difficult times in their lives.
The 1956 movie version of Carousel with Gordon Macrae and Shirley Jones, and this song, are inextricably linked for me. It always brings with it a bit of melancholy.
Great version of a great song. An amusing reflection of dire economic times in Liverpool a long time ago was singing it with the line "and you'll never work again".
Learning to play this song on my new keyboard .ove this dong and sldo don't let the sun catch you crying gerry and the pacemakers awesome
That end has always been in the song 😊
Good songs, but my favorite will always be Ferry Cross the Mersey - a late night summer/autumn listen for me, for a number of years.
It brings hope to my heart. No matter what, im not alone. Reminds me to let people into my heart, to be humble and ask for help, and to be there for other also.
The Tartan Army at Hampden Park singing along with Runrig's recording of "Loch Lomond" and/or the Proclaimers' "(I'm Gonna Be) 500 Miles" are what I find most stirring because they're not just singing about their team, they're singing about Scotland and what it means to be a Scot...it doesn't get any better than that because they sing win, lose, or draw. If they could bottle that it would be stiff competition for a certain other "Water of Life"...
Sunshine On Leith -Hibs at Hampden...
I think this inspired the Port Adelaide Power AFL club to sing Never Tear Ua Apart by INXS at their home games. Love hearing big crowds sing with such passion.
One of the few songs that always will bring a tear to my eye. Both for what it means for the football club I love, and the memories it is associated with on a personal level. Joy and heartbreak alike.
A beautiful song sung in such a incredible tone. He owns the song and believes in the lyrics completely. A huge Liverpool fan of the people, the city and of course, the LFC. Been a fan of the band since the mid 60’s.
Always has me bawling, this song does, ALWAYS! It is such a beautiful masterpiece.
i attended the funerial of John Peel (radio DJ) , this was played at end of service, always takes me back to a very emotional day
For me the association is of full four part harmony in a male voice choir. In that context, this song has a great dynamic range, and the sound can fill a cathedral.
We sang this in my 8th grade choir in the early 70’s.
Liverpool have the best club song in the world! Nowhere in the world looks or sounds like Anfield when they sing this song
Y.N.W.A.❤
Dortmund? Celtic?
I was only 9 when this song was released, but I remember my teenage aunts playing the 45 on a record player and practicing slow dancing with each other.
Very emotional song, but it’s Beth’s next song that I’m waiting for.😁
Lovely ,i think i was eleven or twelve when this hit the charts ,it was before the Beatles and Stones mania .There were so many excellent groups like the Searchers,Billy j Kramer etc.
Me da' was from Liverpool, Just lost him in April. Love this song. Miss you da' ❤ 1955 -2023
My Mum's favourite song R.I.P. and the greatest song ever written in my opinion the words are so true and mean so much and such a great rendition by Gerry Marsden and his band
Hi, Beth. This song is played at every Liverpool football (Soccer) Club match and the supporters sing a long too.
That's the normal end 😊. Walk on with hope in your heart Beth ❤
Beth, keep up the good work. Your expertise and enthusiasm on music is fantastic.
Thanks so much! I've just released my first original song and would love if you could check that out! ua-cam.com/video/bpQC6NWx9Vk/v-deo.html
You might find interesting How do you do it was written for the Beatles and they did record it, but Paul and John said they couldn't release that song before going to America. So they released Please Please me instead, and How do you do it was a huge hit for Gerry and the Pacemakers. Which I failed to point out Please Please Me was primarily written by John.
Wow que bonita canción tan bonita como mi hermosa sirena❤👏👏🍀🍀
BETH BETH BETH ? Where is the wonderful accompanying Official Video showing the people of Liverpool in all their different creeds and colours? :)
Hi Beth, I was born and bred in Liverpool and of course, continue to be mesmerised by all things Merseybeat. It's brilliant to see a British girl doing reaction videos, keep up the good work.
You need to listen to KZ Tandingan singing Rolling in the Deep and Royals. It will be the best reaction video you have ever done.
Love your analysis!
The night we won the league I'd just finished a shift transporting COV+ patients in Liverpool, by this point I'd been living away from home for 2 months to help the NHS Ambo Service, someone across the green at Greenbank Student Accommodation blasted this. Definitely one of the best nights to have insomnia.
YNWA!!! It's Liverpool.. makes this scouser think of home..
My link to this song is to do with family. When my mother's mother died this version of "£You'll Never Walk Alone" was played on the radio on the day that she died. I had Welsh Bass-Baritone Bryn Terfel's version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" from his album "Something Wonderful" played at my mother's funeral. I wanted to sing it at the service but the Methodist minister persauded me that my emotions may have got the better of me I still remain unconvinced to this day, but then, she did not know my singing \\\\\\\\\\cv!
Knofler uses some of this also. Fabulous on guitar .
He has a great voice
German here. Enjoying some great english culture..!
look up this anthem being sung by the crowd prior to a Liverpool FC game. It gives this North American goose bumps, especially the scarves.
Celtic FC as well. :)
and Borussia Dortmund,Mein Freund...
And outside of the UK; Feyenoord!
This is my first time to hear this! Gerry reminds me of Roy Orbison. How I love this music. Such a nostalgic song and sound. You recently reacted to the Pretenders. Chrissie Hynde and her band have a great live performance of Back On The Chain Gang that I think you would really enjoy. Look up Pretenders - Back On The Chain Gang (Radio 2 Live At Home) . I think it is better than their studio album. Thank you Beth🥰
My Mom walks to stay fit, even whilst my Dad was dying. After he passed, I put this on the funeral playlist, and so....
Nice choice Beth. You've excelled yourself here, but I've come to expect that from your analyses. I've seen hard-shelled grown men cry at this many times, mostly Liverpool FC fans of course. I wonder how that all started, Yes, Gerry does a great job, and his unusual climactic note is quite celebrated. He tries to water down his Scouse, but it comes through anyway. The Beatles were more successful at American accents. 'Ferry Cross the Mersey' is a great parochial favorite too, but for me it's 'Don't let the sun catch you crying', also with a gorgeous string arrangement, I believe by Mike Leander. RIP Gerry (and Gordon Macrae).
I know the line from a Pink Floyd song, where they include the Liverpool fans chant. From the Meddle album, track 3 "Fearless" at the 4:45 minute mark the footballers can be heard.
Not only Liverpool Fans will sing it along, also Borussia Dortmund fans will do.
Beth, you forgot the most important use in British culture. When Eddie the Computer sings it while their ship is being attacked in Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy.
Oh, and I'm starting to suspect Beth might be a Liverpool fan....!

This song makes me think of the movie, "Nobody."
This song makes me think of Andy Bradbury..
My first impression was either Jerry Lewis singing it on a Muscular Dystrophy telethon or hearing it as a soccer crowd singing on the end of a Pink Floyd song "Fearless " from their Meddle album. Which came first, I can't remember.
It came to mean so much more after Hillsborough.
Interesting fact - I began wondering, mccartney and pacemakers: who influenced who, vocally (not so obvious at the time). I was surprised to learn that from the beginning, the beatles and the pacemakers were both working with both Brian Epstein AND George Martin. Must have been heaven to have any excuse at all to sneak into recording studios in those days, with all those bands crossing paths and jamming together
This song was wriyyen by Oscar Hammerstein II for Carousel.
Music...Richard Rodgers
Pretty song..done very well by GM. Here in the USA this group's popularity was primarily because of 'Don't let the sun catch you crying' and 'Ferry cross the Mercy.' Too bad they didn't last longer. BTW...This probably would not play well here for our football games...it is a bit 'soft' for our tastes. RIP Gerry Marsden 😊
For me this isn't their best song, it's second place to, "Ferry Cross The Mersey", I love that song so much, I'd love for you to do a analysis of it, Beth.
You have to check out Lianne La Havas - Bittersweet (A Colors Show), amazing studio performance.
He was a rather brilliant singer.
Beth, I would be eternally grateful if you would do a reaction to Barbra Streisand singing C’est Si Bon, from her TV special.
Good that you mentioned it came from Carousel.
From the 1945 Rogers and Hammerstein musical stage play. Was in the musical twice, it was that good.
So a song from 1945 still holds up very well.
Now what of todays songs?
YNWA❤
YEH! Sorry about that, IT's 1965, the Black and white video is from, i was thinking
of another song, You'll never walk alone 1965. anyway check it out if you like mate.
He's singing live he is nota perfect, And you were talking about Vibrato, Well his
Vibrato live is much more Amazing, His live performances were Just Stunning.
YNWA!
I know this version a lot better than the association football version. Even though he has his accent come through and he occasionally skips the hard ending of some words it is still a very clean vocal style.
Ferry Cross the Mersey is another beautiful single from them you should react to. I think you get a better vocal sound and it comes without the pop culture trappings of You'll Never Walk Alone.
My favorite version is Elvis’. His rendition of Danny Boy is also one of my favorite songs ever.
Dottie West's studio version is the crème de la crème.
Can you react to the band Metric and singer Emily Haines
Her voice is incredible !
react to Seu jorge and ana Carolina (chstertton) please, I'm Brazilian and I'd like to see you react to this song
React to David Phelps Singing this song
Ok, this is a good video that your doing a reaction to, but this video is deceiving because there using
his studio version for the show, And although he was singing it live in the studio, they all did back in
the day, there's actually a live video on you tube of him singing it in 1963, and It's amazing, He sings
it Even better then the studio version, It's much more powerful, It will blow your socks off girl. Take a
listen, The picture isn't the best, But Boy the sound with just those three guys on stage will blow your
mind my friend, as well as his vocals. Let me know what you think if you decide to take a listen mate.
I did enjoy your reaction to this video though It was honest, you will Defo react to this one for sure.
Oh and listen to Gerry's guitar work to It's Amazing, Some of his cord changes in the middle are just
WAW, it sounds more like there's 6 guys on stage, His vocals are just OMG, you will be speechless.
You have to hear Elvis Presley's version of this song. In fact, please do a lot Elvis. You won't be sorry.
Important message to Beth Roars !!! Someone uses your beautiful name in a very bad manners!! Please try your best to stop it!! It happened in Telegram App!!
It also became a solidarity chant by the Celtics supporting our Palestinian cause and for that will forever be in my heart.
YNWA

@@BethRoars definitely 👍
Elvis did the definitive version of this song
Elvis by far did the best version of this great song, and he was disappointed it wasn't a bigger hit than what it was.
It's good but I prefer the Elvis version. Thanks Beth.
Thanks so much! I've just released my first original song and would love if you could check that out! ua-cam.com/video/bpQC6NWx9Vk/v-deo.html
