@@carbine5378one month later... On the surface level, the songs words inform the listener of the damage caused by conflict. Though the underlying allusion is to relationship conflict. Or 'Love Stinks!' - (Robbie Hart).
John’s power at what feels so high in the register is amazing, then he holds it, continues and goes up again with the same or more power. In this case to a song already performed by great singers.
Hi Nina, you also have a great appreciation of the best vocalist I have heard live!John is a legend in Australia,His range and control are of the charts! We all pray🙏🏻John will be ok..We love him❤️
Excellent review, Nina. John is a living legend in OZ and counts among his fan base Tom Jones and Celine Dion, both of whom are among the greatest popular vocalist of all time.
I think this song can have a couple of meanings, I have seen other comments that this can be about War but also about relationships. Others with more knowledge will correct me if I am wrong. Thanks for a great reaction once again. Ohh Kasey Chambers "Lose Yourself".
HI Nina the song is actually about a relationship breakdown as opposed to a thing about a returned solder. Yes I always thought it was a return solder too.
This song is about the break up of a relationship. John Farnham is a very versatile singer with a wonderful skill of vocal gymnastics. Please listen to and view an a cappela version by John and his band of Stevie Wonder's, 'Love's In Need'. It is heart-wrenchingly beautiful !
I agree, he's a brilliant complement to the Franham experience. Apart from his solos, I listen to him in the background marrying the voice of his guitar so brilliantly into the emotion and musical depth of the song.
Yep, 1 of the 16,000+ people there … he loves to chat to the audience between songs, he has been performing since the 60s. Sort of miss when he use to perform to audiences of 2,000 odd, but the atmosphere in the tennis centre is unbelievable 😮
A little more attention to the vocals and less on the piano chords maybe. John's performance here is incredible. His voice is truly amazing and the song is beautiful.
Yes, I agree. I find some of the reactions here a bit frustrating to watch, as the songs get interrupted right in the middle of the most passionate part, or right at the release after a buildup, to try to work out the piano chords. I get wanting to understand the piece of music, but I think it's possible to be more careful about where you choose to pause a song, or at least rewind it and re-listen to the bit that was interrupted so it flows a bit better. The result of not doing this makes some of these reactions feel a bit choppy and unsatisfying to watch. When The War Is Over is a fantastic song, but if I'm watching a reaction to John Farnham, I at least want there to be some focus on the singing.
Yes, and no. I'm kind of with you, unnecessary interruptions to satisfy her own musical curiosity that leave us suspended in mid-air while she does it; but most times her expert musical knowledge helped me to more fully appreciate the intricacy/intimacy of the musical voice that brilliantly transports the Farnham voice and his storytelling to that special place we enjoy. Her superfluous engagements about her dog and this and that whilst laughing at her own quips was irritating but hey, it's her video.
John had the ability to surround himself with very talented people. Some had already been independently successful, and some became successful after working with John
First few minutes is probably talking about Cold Chisel and giving credit. Should check out their version. Live of course, John a great singer but Ian and Jimmy up there too.
This song was written by Steve Prestwich, of the band Cold Chisle. They spent time with veterans of WWII and Vietnam. They wrote this song (about WWII) and another about Vietnam.
Thanks Nina , one of many favourite performances by John. You were so understandably focused on the arrangement, John's vocals seemed kind of lost on you. None the less , this song was a Cold Chisel song, an iconic Aussie band. Might I suggest again, Something is wrong with my baby, a duet between John and Jimmy Barnes (lead singer of Cold Chisel)
Great reaction as always Nina, I was surprised that there wasn’t more vocal analysis considering the sheer vocal epicness that was on display from Farnsey here, any chance you could concentrate on the vocals a bit more, particularly with John as he has such a unique voice I’d love to hear a more technical explanation of how he does what he does, thanks Nina.
Chong Lim is once of the best arrangers of our time, and John Farnham’s voice is one of a kind. Put them together and they elevate each other. I am privileged to have seen them both together live many times. What you miss is the amazing stage presence and interaction with the audience which is second to none.
The guitarist is Brett Garsed, an Australian musician and songwriter, best known for his work as a guitarist with John Farnham and T. J. Helmerich, as well as being a former member of the American band Nelson.
You would be surprised at how much Australian talent is on that stage. Behind the guitarist on piano is Chong Lim and like the guitarist is one of our best. John is older here and Lisa, Venetta and Lyndsey his usual backup singers are not there. No one ever leaves him so I would like to know why. John just makes me smile and every now and then I think I can sing like John. Until I look at my husbands face. Our adopted beauty can sing like that and if I sing when she is here. She is saying, no Mumma, just no. Everyone’s a critic but I couldn’t hold a note to save myself. 😂 I love how you react to John. Thank you.
John and his band/back up singers are all brilliant. I think you will find that Lisa was in the audience with her new baby, Vanetta may have retired?. Lyndsay is there, to the right of the stage.
I believe Venetta had retired before this performance. Lindsey was present, as has already been commented on. Nina mentioned in her introduction that there was some talk before the song, which she was skipping. In that section, John introduces Lisa Edwards, who was in the audience with her new baby. As John said, it would be a bit difficult to sing and breast feed at the same time!
John *still* doesnt understand why he is so loved by Australians. He even talks about it in his new book (apparently) but with such incredible natural talent recognised not just in Australia but by audiences and performers world wide, he is still so humble. Another reason why we love him . A true blue 💙 heart of Gold 💛 🎵 🎤 👌
Great old chisels song. John just has this beautiful voice. At one stage John's seemed to be over. It wasn't until he started singing these 'spiritual' songs that he suddenly was everyone's darling again.
Born in Dagenham UK, John Farnham is an absolute national treasure in Australia. Oh, and he can sing pretty good. An absolute legend, but most importantly, an approachable genuinely brilliant bloke!
Yes he is one of a kind our true blue Aussie he's voice is out of this world and he doesn't need to over address we love him very very and am 69years old so i have been on he's journey love Australia 😘💙🐨🐨🇦🇺🇦🇺👍🤗
Brett Garsed on lead guitar is one of the best and highly underrated guitarist I’ve heard. John’s voice in this, even though quite a bit older is epic, powerful, endless range, passion and emotion is amazing. He’s the greatest performer ever, just there for the music, the love, his band members and his fans, always puts everything into every performance.
Watch him sing this song at his whispering jack concert. Different musical director- Oscar winner David hershfelder. It’s with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Divine!!
Bear in mind this isn't a young john. He's in his 50's at this point. The 'seasoning' to his vocal and the long practiced technique should not be ignored. It stands testiment to all singers not to over exert and be careless, but to train and practice.
"When the war is over" was written by the late Steve Prestwich (who was the drummer in the Little River Band with John at one stage) written when he was in Cold Chisel. It is about the breakdown of Steve's marriage to his wife and how love can turn to 'war' during a relationship breakup, the reminiscing of the good times and having to "start again" once it is over and the sadness that follows. 'War' is used as a metaphor and the meaning of the song is often misconstrued.
EXCUSE ME ARE YOU TAKEN ?I LOVE HOW YOU WENT STRAIGHT TO THE PIANO, FOUND THE NOTES, AND YOURE REDDI,CEDDY GO..LOVE YOUR TAKE ON THIS SONG..I CAN LISTEN TO YOU ALL DAY LONG. AWESOME COMMENTS YOU HAVE A NATURAL FEEL FOR THE FINER THINGS TO AN ALL IMPORTANT SONG. U R AMAZING..LOVE YOUR VOICE
I get very emotional listening to this song. We were just kids coming home from vietnam and the military, to find that we were not loved by the same person we loved before serving. Our hearts still loved them though and added more fuel to what we now know as PTSD. Many turned to drugs and alcohol to drowned their sorrow. Some committed suicide adding to the torture of surviving a questionable war. We still loved, even though our hearts were fractured.
There are not many Legends in history, John is a performer who could have easily gone around the world for all the fame as far back as the 1980's onwards but instead he chose to only sing in Australia. Now the world is beginning to hear about John leaving everyone speechless about how come they never heard of this Legend before. With many of his songs quite dated all of his music has stood the test of time even in 2023 & they will be still around for another 40 years or more.
That's Chong Lim on piano/keys - our little Asian mate and genius and arranger. John has really good mic control. That's brett Garsed on guitar- he simply sent a tape of his playing to somebody and got the job - been with John since the 80s. One of Australia's finest and notice he plays in that Legato style wiyh all yhe notes running together. Lovely ( as I am a guitarist of 55 years playing). BTW you hnow your chops.
I lost count of the amount of reactions I have watched....and there has been a lot.....but you did something that I have not seen someone else do, and that is pull a tune out of the air and almost play it to key....this one simple act showed me that you are the real deal....I have to admit at the start I was here for your essence and those green eyes,...but you girl, have talent
"I want to hear that guitarist again", she said blushing. "I want to see that guitarist again" is more like it. We know... Brett's a good looking fella. Obviously great guitarist as well.
As the song was written for Cold Chisel by drummer Steve Prestwich we can only assume that the piano intro was written by Cold Chisels pianist and musical arranger Don Walker. Their own live versions are also brilliant...... a case where a notoriously hard rock band can produce a sublime ballad that brings its own rock audience to tears. If you react to a Cold Chisel version , guitarist Ian Moss does the lead vocals and lead singer Jimmy Barnes does the back up singing. Listen for Jimmy’s very high soulful back up vocals early in the song........ a big surprise for those who think he can only belt in a bluesy gravel crunching scream. lol
That was a joy to behold thank you. War, in the song is used as a metaphor for the ending of a passionate and also turbulence decoupling. Of course today you just get ghosted - Now, what I want to say is that the Original by cold chisel is more intense due to arrangement and vocals by Jimmy Barnes and Ian moss ua-cam.com/video/x4Wwq9_zn_c/v-deo.html
If you want to hear more of that guitarist.. he is on youtube Brett Garsed. absolutely amazing. but if you want to all the musicians in johns band past and present are amazingly talented and underrated.

But the recording company talked him around , John has said When The War Is Over is one of favourite songs .
The song did pop up on his set list on some of John’s tours.
Original Little River Band founding member Graham Goble regards When The War Is Over is LRB best song that wasn’t written by himself .
To imagine, John gave away his job as an apprentice Plumber for this !!
He is such a shining light .. so gifted, so committed to his craft, so immense d in the emotion and watching each of his individual songs is like being bathed in some kind of godly or angelic energy !!
"When the War is Over" is a metaphor. It's about picking up the pieces and getting back on your feet after a relationship breakup.
Really?
@@carbine5378one month later... On the surface level, the songs words inform the listener of the damage caused by conflict. Though the underlying allusion is to relationship conflict. Or 'Love Stinks!' - (Robbie Hart).
John’s power at what feels so high in the register is amazing, then he holds it, continues and goes up again with the same or more power. In this case to a song already performed by great singers.
So happy you like John Farnham 😝👍 He is a Australian Icon 🇦🇺🏄♂️🍹
Hi Nina, you also have a great appreciation of the best vocalist I have heard live!John is a legend in Australia,His range and control are of the charts! We all pray🙏🏻John will be ok..We love him❤️
The guitarist is Brett Garsed. You’ll see him with John again and again
Yes, I heard it was written by a divorce, not war.
Yesss! Love's in Need is also brilliant! Love it.
So good Nina, and much love for calling out the guitarist it was a very sweet run, worthy of praise for sure.
I agree, he's a brilliant complement to the Franham experience. Apart from his solos, I listen to him in the background marrying the voice of his guitar so brilliantly into the emotion and musical depth of the song.
He is truly a loved national hero here. EVERYBODY here wants him to get well soon.
Yep, 1 of the 16,000+ people there … he loves to chat to the audience between songs, he has been performing since the 60s. Sort of miss when he use to perform to audiences of 2,000 odd, but the atmosphere in the tennis centre is unbelievable 😮
He has so much passion in his voice. So brilliant and yet so humble. Absolutely an Australian legend
and Brett Garsed's telecaster riffs and fills are beautiful.. His driving force into playing guitar was Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple
John will always have the number 1 version of this song 💕
This should be the song for Ukraine 🇺🇦🥺😢…..it so well described the heart break ❤️🩹….need a really good Ukrainian singer to take this on!👍🏾
Sing it at Eurovision and they'll win (again).
I'm a massive metal head but this song touches my soul especially this version of it. You absolutely need to see Cold chisel do this live
John's vocals seem metal to me - power & passion
I second that. I''ve loved Farnham since Whispering Jack, but IMO the Chisel version of this song is untouchable.
@@Saan42 Well said👍
Yes, and no.
Please do burn for you live by John ❤ so good
Thank you. I love your explaining of the chord/music structure as well as the vocal critique.
This song has always made me cry, whether sung by John or Cold Chisel, brilliant. John is a fine wine, he just got better as he aged.
Thank you.
I think I saw Lindsey Field in the clip.
@@maltaylor9753Venetta is still a voice coach on the Gold Coast.
I love your Farnsey reactions 🎉🎉
The greatest and most humble.
Love the way he acknowledges soloists 🙂
Guitar - Brett Garsed - the best - Listen to him on Farnaham's cover of Black Dog
Brett Rambo Garsed talented man Played with Paul Stanley solo tour as well
He does a beautiful duo with Oliver newton John you'll see the chemistry between them
John and Oliver newton John Don't Ask Me
JF is amazing,thanks for sharing,Nina💙💕💙
The hot guitarist is Brett Garsed. He’s been with John for most of his tours ❤
Is he the buff RAMBO-looking dude in the tank top in the 'You're The Voice' video?
Brett Garsed on lead guitar is one of the best and highly underrated guitarist I’ve heard. John’s voice in this, even though quite a bit older is epic, powerful, endless range, passion and emotion is amazing. He’s the greatest performer ever, just there for the music, the love, his band members and his fans, always puts everything into every performance.
Watch him sing this song at his whispering jack concert. Different musical director- Oscar winner David hershfelder. It’s with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Divine!!
by drummer Steve Prestwich of Cold Chisel he was also in The Little River Band at the same time as John and they did a cover
❤❤🎉🎉John is our most loved and famous singer in Australia and has been for years, u cannot critic him, he is outstanding 😂😂🎉
Thanks for that.
Great review, really enjoyed it
Chong (keyboard) is an Aussie legend also! What an amazing composer!
❤John is a Australian treasure he is battling thoat cancer at the moment 😢His an absolute magical singer & song writer ❤
Great reaction to an amazing vocal performance. My favourite thankyou
I lost count of the amount of reactions I have watched....and there has been a lot.....but you did something that I have not seen someone else do, and that is pull a tune out of the air and almost play it to key....this one simple act showed me that you are the real deal....I have to admit at the start I was here for your essence and those green eyes,...but you girl, have talent
such an awesome song by cold Chisel (Australian band) and John performs it magnificently.
"I want to hear that guitarist again", she said blushing. "I want to see that guitarist again" is more like it.
We know... Brett's a good looking fella. Obviously great guitarist as well.
You wernt here in 88 but i was around when the beatles were inn their prime, what a magic musical world it was. .
This song is an a original from Cold Chisel. You should listen to a duo of John and Jimmy Barnes. You will love it.
Listen for Jimmy’s very high soulful back up vocals early in the song........ a big surprise for those who think he can only belt in a bluesy gravel crunching scream. lol
have to say I love ian moss's original cold chisel version better but yes johns is good.
At 3:22, I just LOVE the audience member who literally EXPLODES out of their seat with arms raised like * !!! HALLELUJAH !!! * . LOL.
If you want to hear more of that guitarist.. he is on youtube Brett Garsed. absolutely amazing. but if you want to all the musicians in johns band past and present are amazingly talented and underrated.
