  • For the latest Volkswagen Atlas pricing and information:
    www.kbb.com/volkswagen/atlas/
    The three-row midsize Volkswagen Atlas got a smidge of a midcycle refresh, so we’re going to go around the world on what’s new. See what I did there?
    There are two significant updates to check out. The first is to the revised front and rear styling.
    While that’s significant it isn’t in the looks department. The Atlas still looks pretty much the same. It is different however in size. The enhanced sculpted bumper on the front adds three inches to the length of what was already a long vehicle. It also now uses the same 3-bar grille that extends into the headlights that we find on the new Atlas Cross Sport.
    While we like the look and certainly approve that the extra length helps with pedestrian impact mitigation, you’re going to have more trouble finding street parking.
    The second change is to the 4-cylinder engine which you can now get on top trim levels and with optional AWD if you want.
    In standard form, the Atlas seats seven. But you can get it with optional captain’s chairs in the second row, and now you can only bring five extra friends with you.
    Regardless of configuration, all occupants are treated to plenty of space inside the Atlas.
    On the safety front, a forward-collision warning system, along with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor, and a rear cross-traffic alert, now come standard on all models.
    Two engine options are available. I’m driving an Atlas with the 276 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and it feels quite effortless in moving around this 4,000-pound car. A 4-cylinder that makes 235 horsepower is also available and that’s highly capable, too, thanks in part to its excellent low-end torque that peaks at just 1,600 rpm.
    The ride quality ranks high on the comfortable index and thankfully low on the floaty one. If I’ve got a nitpick, for me, it’s with the steering. Not that it’s not good, it’s very precise and certainly works, but I just don’t like how overly assisted it feels especially at low speeds.
    Shifting on the 8-speed automatic feels smooth and it does well enough picking the right gear at the appropriate time.
    The 4Motion AWD models get Snow and Off-road modes and while you shouldn’t mistake those for making the Atlas an off-roader they get the job done on dirt roads, mud, and snow. It’s also got a respectable eight-inch ground clearance.
    Interior controls are where you’d expect them to be.
    The quality of materials is good, though there’s more of hard plastic in here than you’d expect on the highest SEL trim, it looks appropriately European enough.
    Gas mileage numbers on the 4-cylinder don’t shame the large Atlas (FWD 4-cylinder 21 city/24 hwy. AWD 4-cylinder 20 city/24 hwy.) The V6 doesn’t fair quite as well, but that’s to be expected since it’s more powerful and thirstier. (FWD V6 17 city/23 hwy. AWD V6 16 city/22 hwy).
    If you’re looking for other midsize three-row SUVs you’ve got an embarrassment of riches to choose from.
    The Ford Explorer Honda Pilot Toyota Highlander Hyundai Palisade the Kelley Blue Book Best New Model for 2020 Kia Telluride and don’t forget about the Chevy Traverse and Subaru Ascent.
    There are 8 trim levels on the Atlas. The base S level gets the 4-cylinder engine, cruise control, and a good safety suite including automatic emergency braking.
    Top Atlas trims include the SEL Premium and the SEL Premium R-Line.
    Those get leather sport seats, panoramic sunroof, the VW digital cockpit, and a 360-degree overhead camera view. The SEL Premium R-Line adds 21-inch alloy wheels and unique bumpers and sporty body trim.
    4Motion all-wheel drive adds $1,900 to the price of a base 2021 VW Atlas.
    One more new option on the VW Atlas is a V6 Towing Package. Equipped with said package, the VW Atlas can now tow up to 5,000s.
    Pricing on the Atlas starts with the base S at $32,565.
    The mid SE trim starts at around $36,000 and the highest SEL trim starts at just under $48,000 and goes up from there. All those prices include a $1,020 destination charge. Add 4Motion AWD to any of those and you’re looking at another $1,900.
    Smart ergonomics with plenty of interior space, a good standard safety suite, a solid overall driving experience and now three inches longer, if you’re browsing in the ever-growing midsize 3-row SUV category, then the VW Atlas might just be the right world on wheels for you.

      We just got our 2021 Atlas SEL and it's awesome. I think it looks better than the Palisade and Telluride, and VW gave us better rebates than both so it was a win win. Don't care about mpgs as the 3.6 is proven reliable and been around since 2005.

The squeaky wheel gets the oil. I learned this with Fords, Hondas, GM, Nissan, Mazda, and Toyota. My "Bulletproof" 09 Odyssey was traded in at 24k miles due to constant transmission problems they couldn't fix. The Nissan Altima i had before that was flawless to 90k when we traded it in. My 05 Expedtition was running great at 110k when I traded that in. My Mazda B4000 manual traded in at 90k without a hiccup ever. My 06 F150 traded in at 100k with not a single problem. My 08 F250 Diesel had a few issues but I traded in at 140k and made money on it, currently have a 13 350 6.7 diesel at 150k no problems. O may have missed a few but if you look at the forums, all of these vehicles would look like junk. Elijah Moon that’s just probably par for European (or maybe specifically, German?) manufacturers. Car prices here in Germany have such a wide range that one model overlaps with many others. VW eats into Audi territory on the top end, and Seat and Skoda on the bottom end (and those latter two can hardly be differentiated price-wise). A base Golf is comparable in price to a mid-range Polo, and a high-end, non-GTI Golf is comparable to the Passat or Arteon, or even a lower-end A6. It’s incredibly confusing, unless you’re in the market for a Bentley.

The Atlas has been out for 4 years and after testing all the top contenders, we got the Atlas. After a month of driving the different models, the wow factor only the new Telluride and Palisade wore off and the Highlander was just too small. The bugs in the early Atlas models have been mostly worked out. Bang for the buck , the Atlas won me over.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 3 роки тому +1

      @@greenshield1 I own both a VW (GTI) and a KIA (Sorento) so my brand loyalty is evenly divided. If I were shopping in this category I think I'd opt for the Telluride but you're certainly correct that in terms of real world transactions (as opposed to MSRPs) you're likely to do at least as well, if not better, with the Atlas. And in terms of interior room, the Atlas 3rd row is considerably more roomy than the Telluride with 33.7" of legroom compared to the Telluride's 115.2".

    • @greenshield1
      @greenshield1 3 роки тому

      @@stephenhendricks103 the Telluride is definitely a nice vehicle and would have suited our needs as well. It's just paying sticker or most places mark up with no negotiating possible is the norm on them. They have a lot of new kid on the block hype as did the Atlas in 2018.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 3 роки тому +1

      @@greenshield1 I understand your choice completely. We're a family of four (two adults, a teenager, and a big dog.) The family SUV is my wife's daily driver and she felt the Atlas was simply too large for our needs while the Sorento is a real Goldilocks vehicle for us. At 189" long (9" less than the Atlas) and with three rows of seats it still offers the same combined (and adjustable) 115.2" of legroom as the Telluride and (surprisingly) slightly more than the Atlas (112.8") We use the third row of the Sorento only occasionally (less than 10% of the time, I'd guess) but when we need to transport more than 5 passengers on a short trip it's VERY convenient. Where it comes up "short" (No pun intended) is in the rear cargo space with all three rows occupied. The Atlas and Telluride each provide around 21 cubic ft of rear cargo space in that configuration compared to the 11.4 cf in the Sorento. For fewer than six passengers, the cargo space behind the second row, 38 cubic ft, trails the larger Telluride and Atlas by a lot but is still adequate for us.
      As far as the amenities, bells, and whistles of the Telluride and the Palisade vs the Atlas, I think it comes down to a large degree to whether one prefers the flashy features of the Korean vehicles to the minimalist European aesthetic of the VW. Personally I can see advantages to each approach. It largely comes down to subjective preferences.
      In terms of price the fact that the Telluride (and to a lesser extent the Palisade) are more likely to involve long waiting lists and second sticker "market adjustments" comes down to production capacity. A combination of KIA's (and KIA dealers') original underestimates of the popularity of top trim Tellurides and the impact of COVID in the Georgia assembly site have combined to produce that result. For roughly equal transaction prices, I think the Telluride has a significant edge, not only versus the Atlas but versus every other mainstream midsize crossover. But for an average transaction price difference of, say, $5000, the Atlas looks to be a much more appealing option than it otherwise it would be.

    I want to like this and so many of VW’s other vehicles but they completely lose me when you get to the interior. It’s the sea of hard plastics for me, the most you will find in any vehicle in this class. I get they may not want to step on Audi’s toes, but trust me that gab between the two is huge. Nothing to worry about there. Yea having such a bland interior filled with so many hard plastic surfaces even on your highest trim level is just inexcusable even in this class. Especially when you look at the interiors of the Palisade Limited, Telluride SX, Explorer Limited or Platinum and Traverse High Country.

      VW has learned a couple of lessons in the last decade. First, don't cheat on emission tests for their diesels, especially in the US. Second, Americans want BIGGER and preferably less expensive VW's than their European counterparts. The Atlas replaced the smaller Touareg in the US. It's built in Tennessee and not even available in Europe. Same story with the current Jetta, larger than its predecessor and not for sale in Germany. The US Passat is larger and bears little resemblance to the European version. And the same story with the US Tiguan where the second generation smaller version isn't available in the US. On the other hand, Americans are much less concerned with fuel efficiency than European consumers where gasoline is sold by the liter rather than the gallon.
