  • Sporting a few styling tweaks and some updated technology, the 2021 Volkswagen Atlas is a safe bet, sure, but it misses the mark in at least a few basic ways that make it less family-friendly than its outsized dimensions might suggest. Before signing up for that monthly payment, it’s important to consider all your family needs from a hauler like this in the first place. AutoTrader.ca Road Test Editor Dan Ilika climbs aboard Volkswagen's most spacious crossover to show why size isn't everything when shopping for a practical peoplemover.

I see some feedback that the power tailgate can be closed via the button inside or the fob. Rest assured, I tried both methods all week long to no avail. Maybe it's an issue with this updated version, but even the VW Canada rep I spoke with was perplexed. Thanks to those who weighed in here!

You can close it as well with the fob but you have to trip the proximity sensor. If you walk up to the Atlas and back away, it will close when you Touch and Hold the button. Works on my 2021.5 Atlas SEL. ua-cam.com/video/qZro11CwD64/v-deo.html

We just bought the 2021.5 SEL Atlas which is the mid-tier model in the US. The SEL has VW's IQ.Drive which includes Lane-Keep Assist. The infotainment in the 2021.5 models includes wireless Apple Car Play and USB-C instead of USB-A. We wanted a people-mover and the 3rd row is better than the Telluride we looked at. Like you, we found fuel mileage was a bit better than what was on the sticker. We love it.

Thanks for this, Mark! Quite the unnecessary process, if you ask me. I wonder if that’s new for the 2021.5 Atlas or if it applies to the 2021 as well...

@@danilika9420 Agreed. This is what happens when Safety and Security get in the way of practicality. The good news is that you CAN open and close the hatch with the fob. It just isn’t very intuitive.

Great job, Dan! I was also disappointed by the driving feel when I drove the Atlas, it felt quite sloppy.

I love the exterior styling of the Atlas and the interior is simplistic and very VW which I also like.

Rear tail gate closes by key fob, by switch in drivers door and handsfree way same as the previous model

Hey, David, thanks for watching, and for the feedback. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that's the case here, as both myself and our video producer, Will, tried over and over all week long, and only the button on the tailgate itself worked to close it. Perhaps it's a problem with this version of the Atlas, but the Volkswagen Canada PR rep I spoke with acknowledged the peculiarity of the problem. Cheers!

I just got an pre-owned VW certified 2019 SEL with all features this featured premium has except the front ventilated seats and rear heated seats for $38,500 and 35,000 miles... I drove this one and a new 2021 SEL and you do not feel the difference. I am happy so far with my new car.

You can close the tailgate with the key fob and the button on the inside of the door. Just like you I thought you couldn't do it until I read the owners manual.
To close the tailgate from the inside with the button, the ignition has to be on and then you hold the button on and it'll close.
To close it with the key fob, you have to be standing no more than 3-6 feet from the vehicle and then press the trunk button on the key fob when the trunk is open to close it.
Believe me both methods are stupid compared to what is obtainable in competitive brands like the Chevrolet traverse

Thanks for watching and for the feedback, Michael. Unfortunately, both myself and our video producer, Will, tried to no avail, and only the button on the tailgate would close it, but all methods worked to open it. Maybe it's an issue with this version of the Atlas, but the Volkswagen Canada PR rep I mentioned it too was equally as perplexed.
We tried it over and over with the engine on and off, with the fob inside the vehicle and out, with it in our hands and our pockets, and by pressing it as close as a few inches from the vehicle; sadly, nothing worked. Thanks again for watching, and for chiming in!

@@danilika9420 thanks for the reply Dan. Closing the tailgate with the button in the door requires that the ignition is On and you "HOLD" the button. Don't just press it once like you would when you're opening it. Press and hold it

i wish you reviewers would just stop talking about looks.
this is totally subjective and people can see this just by seeing the cars in parking lots.
to me, this VW design is like their corporate philosophy...keep the car looking simple and time solid.
your car will look as modern 7 years from today as when new.
just look at all VWs, especially the tiguan of 2009.
it still looks as contemporary as when new.
you can't say that about ANY korean design.
hyundai and kia seem to try to make your purchase outdated in 2 years, forcing you to buy again.
