Your fund of knowledge as to tides, currents, and wind is almost paralleled by your ability to catch fish and your soft-spoken talent for teaching others how they might catch fish. Thank you.
14' aluminum Grumann with 25 hp Suzuki in South Jersey...I live on Windy and Windfinder cross referenced to Tides4Fishing. It's way too easy to die in a tinny or kayak. Great stuff as always Mr. Skinner
My wife says she should put "he doesn't have to worry about which way the wind blows anymore" on my tombstone. It's mostly fishing for me, but also marine mammal observation and bird watching, so it's a year-round obsession for me in RI. I keep weather logs for nature observation as well as fishing logs, and I noticed that this year we are having regular days of S or SSW when the forecast was W. This setup will not be good for CT/RI if a tropical system is coming up the coast, and we are statistically overdue for trouble. Heads up later this summer is advised, and good luck to all. Great post, glad to know there are other wind fanatics out there, I have been using Windfinder for a long time and Windy as well the past several years.
Thanks John, I have been using Windfinder. I find it to be fairly accurate especially the superforecast. I also look at l-36 and the NOAA forecast. I will take a look at Windy too.
Been using a combination of Buoyweather, windy, and the NOAA forecast for kayak fishing for a couple years now. Generally ere on the conservative side, but like you said also depends on wind combined with tide direction to make the best choice.
Glad to hear that you also find Windfinder accurate. I operate a commercial boat for a living and find it very useful. My go to app. Keep up the great content.
For the last two years I've used windy to plan kayak trips. I've found situations where the multiple different models used to come up with the 'default' windy forecast tends to lean towards the more extreme forecasts. If the majority of the models underlying the default prediction project fair weather, and only one is bad, I've typically gone on the trips and had no issues. When the majority of the windy models are bad, catch up on sleep :)
I’ve been using the free versions of Windfinder and windy on my iPhone and iPad, along with wind conditions wave height and frequency is very important to me, I trailer a long distance to fish the same waters you do, and it’s very disappointing to arrive and find white caps.I haven’t seen much conflicting information. As far as rigs, I’m certainly nobody to make suggestions to you, I’m not a big fan of treble hooks, and don’t like getting $12 buck tails stuck, so I’ve been trying three way rigging 2oz Mojo’s, I have friends that fish Huntington area that catch many 40lbs bass on them. I really appreciate this year’s videos, I’m learning much more from you, thanks very much.
Thanks for the content John. I use the National Weather Service Marine Forecast as well as The Weather Channel App for my fishing forecast. I agree with you tho, certain forecasts are inaccurate and you have to make an average out of what you see to form a decision. Especially with the wind. The windy app is good also
I replaced the treble hooks on all my swim plugs i troll by the coffee pot with the double tuna hooks and they worked great. They may work on the spoons as well.
As a long time aluminum boat guy (17' Discovery for many years, now a 23 Pacific) I get the wind thing. Aluminum is strong but light relative to wood and glass. Wind forecast is crucial as I fish in places that also are deeply affected by wind like Buzzards Bay. Great video!
Great content. I know here on vineyard sound not only is mph critical but more important the direction. A west wind we can deal with but strong out of south different ball game
I’ve typically used Windy combined with BoatUS app and found some days they are just off. Forecast wind and rough seas and turned out smooth….Gonna try Windfinder as well and compare. The more input the better.
When I go out front (to the ocean) I will only go out with 2' or less waves which is usually a calm wind 5 MPH or less. I do this because I have been let down so many times by the weather forecasting models. I am in a 22' pilot house boat and have absolutely been thrashed 4-6' by waves on what was supposed to be a calm day. I would have done exactly what you did....find a bigger boat! I use NOAA and a few other websites that have shown me accuracy. I'll have to see how windy does with my other sites. Thanks for the video.
John, use the compare feature and look for alignment. ECMW is the Euro model. GFS is North American model. Icon is German HRRR and NAM are short range models that are updated about 36 to 72 hours out - intended to be more accurate. They often update the forecasts with new data around 6-7pm EST, which I believe is 00z (Zulu time) in weather talk.
I crush the barbs on the spoon trebles. I seem to have the same rate of catch success. Much easier to unhook and easier on the fish. Buried a hook point in my hand at Plum a few weeks ago. The barbless hook came out without effort. No pain
Great video and info John thank you. Did you venture out for fluke to either Montauk or Black Island this year yet? If you did how was it? It is a long drive for me. So I want to make sure fishing is good before I decide to go. Thanks for any info.
@@comfortablynumb9342 I have a bay boat and we still struggle, like is it fishable? Sure, but is it enjoyable when it’s blowing 30+ and you have to deal with swell/current too… not at all
20 models, 20 forecasts! They can’t ever be wrong… or right! I wonder if liability plays into it? They seem to put it on you to take your chances either way.
This just happened to me this morning,it was supposed to be a bit too blowy for my taste, so I didn't set the alarm. Woke up to perfect conditions. So annoying!
Did I just see that boat has a bow thruster only reason I ask is the video did not look like there was an edit and the camera panned and revealed that the trolling motor was in the stowed position?
Forecasts are all the same, regardless of app. Windy lets you choose forecasting method so you can check them all. The other app prob does too. The point is; whichever method the apps individually defaulted to is what you are comparing. There are like 40 different forecasting systems haha

I spend a fair amount of time on Windy every day and debate getting the Premium version. Thank you for explaining the different models.
Use mainly wind guru and surfline. Will check multiple models in wind guru if I'm skeptical.

Great vid man just started a channel and absolutely love it
I've been using Windfinder for the past 6 years, along with My Radar. They seem to be more accurate than just relying on NOAA forcasts.
We use reef cast for fishing in the Gulf.

Have not been out there.
Amazing nice video 🎉
windfinder for me. I replace the treble on my spoons with two 7/0 Siwash swung in opposite directions. Good hook ups and much easier release.
Nice hook suggestion. Thanks.
with engines off, if can turn motors to one side or the other it can help with that weird drifting.
Sailfow has been god awful lately, but also the wind has just been brutal ( south east CT )
The spring has been terrible!!
It's been blowing around Hampton VA a lot too. Getting out in my kayak has been tough.

@@1996xela I know how to feel. I grew up going out in the Gulf of Mexico as often as possible, I grew up in Florida.
You're only like 2 miles off shore. That's a pretty easy ride in. I fish Delaware Bay and that area is brutal as well but you need to go out further.
The current in Plum gut and The Race is some of the strongest on the east coast
do you have an epirb on your pdf vest as well?
Are Gulp ineffective to use on bucktails on striped bass?
Not ineffective, but there are more durable options with better action that cost less.
Add a heavy duty swivel and another split ring between the treble and the supplied swivel. l
I us Windfinder and Weather Underground an have found them both be accurate.
Need a traffic cop out there with all those boats... lol

Wind has been killing me. I have only gotten 2 trips in this year so far. There is no really good wind ap. NOAA is hands down the worst ever
Add a strip of lead tape down the center line...might help keep it down.

Does anyone here use Ventusky? Very similar to Windy.....

Windfinder sucks .
