John I think I’ve watched this video a hundred times already and each time is just as good. It’s been a grind here for me on the CNS lately so I truly appreciate you and your videos to keep me inspired! Thank you so much! Really loving the high angle view.
You know some of those people in big fancy boats aren’t catching and see John in his little 17’ catching multiple every drift, and just punching the air so mad hahahahaha
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I ordered the quantum yesterday it should be coming in tomorrow very hard to get in lefty retrieve. I typically use 20 pound is that okay or should I do 15?
Back in the early-mid nineties we used to catch a lot of tagged fish in Cape Cod Bay. I got them originally tagged anywhere from North Carolina to Maine! Also got a few hats, and a couple of cash prizes. I think that when they first declared them recovered in the early nineties from the bad times in the eighties the tagging efforts slowed so you don't see as many tagged fish now as the early-mid nineties. Keep up the good videos, and I'm especially glad to see the aluminum boat being used...I've been an aluminum fan for almost thirty years, had a 17' Discovery (made in upstate NY) for twenty years and currently run a 23 Pacific.
I know a couple old salts that tag fish around the Chesapeake. I'm not sure about stripers because I haven't seen any caught, much less with those guys around. But I have helped them both tag a couple hundred redfish and trout, and some flounder and black sea bass. They have to be over a minimum size to tag. Last fall at the local pier the trout and redfish bite was on fire and we tagged over 200 fish because everyone was catching fish and letting them tag the shorts. I've been here almost a year now and it's awesome to help with fish research. I fish most days after work and I grew up catching fish in Florida so I like to help the fish.
This is interesting to me because it's something I've never tried. I grew up catching all the normal stuff on the beaches and bay in Florida but now I'm by the Chesapeake Bay in VA. I need to learn how to catch stripers.
@@charlieduvall6463 that's truly funny. I've been fishin' for a year here and haven't seen a striper. I catch redfish and flounder and trout but no stripers.
Good eye. I don't like to do that and don't normally do it but I wanted to be able to switch quickly to a 3-way rig if I wanted. With two guys it would require 6 rods to have 2 each of spoon, 6-ounce jig, and 3-way. I have only 4 of those outfits.
I've caught 2 tagged bass in my life. They were both smaller fish so I didn't really know what to do with the tag. The first one I just released it and didn't take the tag, the second one I cut off and took it home. Both tags were coated in slime and one of them was actually dragging a couple feet of seaweed in it. The tag I took home I cleaned it off and it was from something called Littoral Society and it was tagged in Raritan Bay. Probably much easier to get info nowadays with the internet at our fingertips.
Hey Skinner, Did you modify the smiling bill jig mold to use a swing hook? Are you using #2 brass eyelets? What hook are you using? I'd like to do the same with the ultra minnow mold. Any tips? Thanks.
I had this mold custom made in the 90s because at the time I couldn't get a mold for 4-ounce or heavier bucktails that I sometimes needed when fishing ocean inlet jetties. I think they're #2 eyelets. An 8/0 hook, but I can't remember the model.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing no kidding & that just keeps the fat cow strip moving enough to attract the bass huh. This looks like little gull if I’m not mistaken
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I guess those were the ones I was catching too, I'm talking 1980's and 90's. But I don't recall getting $5, I vaguely recall maybe one time they sent a patch.
Really cool on the tag. And worked out perfect as the slot. I tie my own bucktails as well, why do you think yours hook better than store bought? What size hook?
Absolutely, because you get frequent positive reinforcement when you make the right moves. It's not all as simple as it may look sometimes. Lots of fun for sure else I wouldn't do it.
Hey john I caught a bass off the motel in mattituck about 12yeara ago was tagged as well was tagged in north carolina in ocean I believe 2years prior I got the Same hat and certificate pretty cool👍
Now that I think about it, that helps answer a question we've had - are those eastern Sound fish Hudson or from the southern coastal grounds? There was some thought that the Hudsons didn't go east of Wading River, but I don't know about that.
John, that fish should have been released. You just destroyed the tracking of the fish. What's the sense in tagging fish if you bring them home for dinner? Hopefully you learned from your mistake. And then the free hat😅
From USFWS, the organization that tagged the fish: "If you catch a tagged striped bass, please cut off the tag if needed and record the date, location, and method of capture." There was no way the information on that tag could have been read without a thorough cleaning. Even then I needed a lighted magnifier to get all of the numbers. The other organization I've caught striper tags from is the Hudson River Foundation. They also say to cut off the tag. In a perfect world the tag would be legible enough to read off a live fish and the info could be retrieved and the fish released, but that's not always the case. BTW - that's the first bass I've harvested in at least 10 years.

Great video.. Thanks for the info on fishing rods.

They’re all just there to watch John fish
Worth the wait until the end to hear the story of the tagged fish. Interesting!
Love the story about the tag fished❤❤
Reminds me of the Cape May rips in the fall, pre-Sandy. There were days that I was looking eye to eye with walls of water but the fishing was awesome.
Nice thanks for the great education 🤣☘️😊👻😎
Good video!
Man what great trips you always have going there. Love watching it thanks john.
Another awesome video thanks
Awesome..can only dream of having such a day. Unfortunately my 15ft triumph would be dangerous in that rip. Well done!
Awesome John 🎣
I love it! Great work and thank you so much for sharing!
Very nice video 🎉
Just bought your rod John very excited to use it. Still gotta figure out what reel I’m going to pair it with
If it's the one in this video, I use a quantum accurist spooled with 15# line for fluke, and a maxel hybrid 25 spooled with 30# for bass. Enjoy!
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I ordered the quantum yesterday it should be coming in tomorrow very hard to get in lefty retrieve. I typically use 20 pound is that okay or should I do 15?
If you're fluke fishing, definitely get 15 instead of 20.

No shore fishing videos this year at dawn or dusk?
May I ask why you’re using a snap swivel at you leader/ line attachment ? Thanks.

Nice going John, good size bass! I had some good days on the Hudson and also on Staten Island. Will be on the sound now for some fluke, tight lines.

What type of line are you using braid or mono
Never ever mono for me for anything but leader material. You would need much more weight here with mono.
Nice hat
Great video because of great catches by a great angler!
Are you not jigging the bucktail at all?
Correct. We are drifting 2-4mph through turbulence.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing no kidding & that just keeps the fat cow strip moving enough to attract the bass huh. This looks like little gull if I’m not mistaken
Great video!
I've caught a few tagged stripers in my life, I never got a hat!😠😠 All were schoolies and all were tagged in the lower Hudson.
Many years ago I would every couple of years catch one with a Hudson River Foundation tag. Those were worth $5, which was a pizza back then!

For whatever reason, I just wasn't sticking them with the store bought bucktail. Mine are 8/0 swing hooks using a custom mold.
John, is it still as much fun when they are so plentiful?
Absolutely, because you get frequent positive reinforcement when you make the right moves. It's not all as simple as it may look sometimes. Lots of fun for sure else I wouldn't do it.
A treacherous rip? that fish was in NO danger of drowning?😉

getting ridiculous out there
this the rip between orient point and plum island in case anyone is interested
please tell me this is a weekend
No. I would never fish there on a weekend in my boat.
Do not eat dip swimming fish around Catalina.
DDT.
Skinner missed 77 fish....might be time to send him down to minors😎

If the fish is released you cut the tag off.
I thought so too, but I caught a lot of crap when I did that on a Florida fish. They wanted the tag left on.
Never an issue with bass and blues for me they were all released, especially now, most bass you catch must be released.
I meant in Florida they don't want tags cut off of fish that will be released. I think I've read that up here they want the tags cut off.
