I’ve had a few outings like this is my day. One night specifically I was on a pile of 20-30lb fish for 3 hours straight surf casting. Had to sit down and take breaks my arms were so tired. Love to see it
Well worth the water on lense and wind and whatever other noise to watch your videos . They're always top notch fishing wise that's for sure. Thanks for sharing as always love the video
John...When raining I always wore my bibs like you do, inside my jacket. Does John's bibs inside his jacket not allow water to run inside his bibs? Just curious why he wears his jacket inside his bibs!?
The issue with using only a bucktail, even a 6-ounce, is sometimes it won't stay down. I had this for a time yesterday with wind against the current. I went to a 3-way with a 10-ounce sinker and that fixed it. At this point, if a 6-ounce bucktail will stay down on its own, I'll choose that over the 3-way.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thank you! I had many moments where bucktails and such just wouldn't do it because of strong currents and I thought of your rig. I wonder if something similar can be done with my light Nichols flutter spoons without resorting to buying heavier Tsunami flutter spoons.
John how do you like that reel the Maxel 25. I did not think it was too good when I used it for blackfish. I did not get a smooth reel in. It was all over the place.
👀 Incredible ! Two years ago I got spooled out there by what I don’t know, using a heavy spinning with a 5000 Daiwa Saltist, I even tried to run it down, after watching this I’m pretty certain it wasn’t a Striper ? I guess next time you’ll be on Halk’s new boat. Thanks.
John I believe your last boat was a 16’ Starcraft. Always impressed with the seaworthy capabilities of that boat. Im looking at a 2000 Starcraft Fish master 176 with 125 Merc. Would you think it would be similar in performance?
John for the single bucktails, I’ve noticed that you or your buddy’s have used heavier ones around 6oz. Would you go to a lower weight single bucktail if you are fishing shallower water? Say about 20ft of water
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks John, I just purchased your jig and bounce dark matter rod and will be going out Friday to try it out. I was thinking of also getting the jig and bounce spinning rod for my son
Better be in somewhat decent shape for trips like that. I grew up with a cottage on Misquamicut beach and used to go out on the Blackhawk and Hel-cat. We moved to Colorado in ‘91 and the last time I’ve fished the gut/race was 2011. I was in great shape at the time and won the pool with a 16lb blue and caught close to 20 blues/stripers and my arm were like jello.
We use the Tsunami Heavy spoon. It's 6 ounces: bit.ly/3AXNxFb. If I could have only one rig for this place it would be a 3-way rig, because you can always use a heavier sinker to stay down. Most importantly - 30# braid.
Watching from CT and my boat is in Niantic Bay. I'm a fair-weather guy and I'd like to know if you'll put a bimini top on it or just rough it every time. The 90 temps will be here soon too. Learned so much from you, Thanks.
Ah the stuff I read about in Saltwater Sportsman as a kid. I do have a question for you though. Do you have any issues/concerns with the auto inflating life vest triggering in the rain?
Was there this morning. Was scoping out with 6 oz jig and 20lb braid. Marked fish but couldn't get attractive presentation. Charter boat was catching with wire line nonsense.
Long time subscriber here. I have to ask John. I’ve seen you use the spro Bucktail over open bill onshore and offshore this year. Are you liking the spros better?
Is the prime time still around? I know Capt. Mike is gone to be with the Lord but is the boat still fishing the gut? The boat in the distance kind of looks like them
Hey Jon have you ever had any season seem abnormal like starting off unusually slow but then have a great season? Me and all my buddy's in north shore Massachusetts usually are on a bunch of fish by this time of year but this year nobody is catching squat with the exception of a couple schoolies. Im concerned about the overall statr of the fishery, or maybe its just an abnormal year? Ive only been fishing for 6 years so i havent seen this yet but have you had weird seasons like this?
I think they're on their way. My friends fluking Montauk a couple of days ago saw bass all over the top and I know there are 30-50# bass west of there on bunker schools.
For some reason striper just doesnt do it for me, it’s so boring to me and I don’t know why. I just do not have any fun catching them. I target them once a year get my meal and that’s it
Great video John! Nothing beats watching two guys just HAMMER the fish and send each one back to thrill the next angler. Thank you,

From the angle, looks like the fish are staying close to the cable line. Love fishing the gut. Thanks for taking us along.
Great Trip! Working those Bucktails to perfection!
Thanks for taking us along!
Masterfully done John kudos on the great day
Its So great to see all of them big striper around, and they look so healthy. Great video Mr skinner I'll take the rain any day with fish like that.
Holy Schniikey!! Truly a trip for the ages!!
Outstanding Day! Bucktail Wins!
John, another epic video rain+big fish hardcore fishing 1000%
Well worth the water on lense and wind and whatever other noise to watch your videos . They're always top notch fishing wise that's for sure. Thanks for sharing as always love the video
We all live for days like this where you can't miss if you tried.. So much fun..
Great video. Now I just need to find a friend with a boat
Your big striper: They don't get that big without eating. Game on! Nice fish.
Now that's dedication john 👍👍👍👍 great vid keep up the great work your friend Mike from nj 👍
Man these are the days boys!
Great video as usual, it would really help those of us who take note of the moon to include a date of the trip. Thanks
You Are a Legend!
John, have a knot question for you
What knot are you using for your leader lure attachment?
Leader to reel line knot?
Thanks,
Randy
Main line to leader I go through a barrel swivel - palomar on the braid, clinch on the leader, also clinch on leader to lure.
John could you please describe your terminal Tackel rig and do you use different line weights for the sinker in this video?
This video shows the 3-way rig. ua-cam.com/video/5vFnK4kgPxY/v-deo.html
Another great video
John...When raining I always wore my bibs like you do, inside my jacket. Does John's bibs inside his jacket not allow water to run inside his bibs? Just curious why he wears his jacket inside his bibs!?
No, was just an idiot who put the bibs on outside the raincoat without thinking
His pants were probably soaked when he took off his bibs
Was thinking the same thing
Nice video Mr. Skinner. Like to see you guys do video on Jigging new boat.
What brand heavy bucktail? Thank you
They're not in production at the moment. We'll have them in about a month. I've been using my own homemade bucktails.
I noticed the cannonball sinker. Is this something you always did? I was wondering how you keep the bucktails down there.
That's the standard 3-way rig. I show the rig on this video: ua-cam.com/video/5vFnK4kgPxY/v-deo.html

If a 3-way rig doesn't get you down, a spoon definitely won't. I use 30# braid. 50# is OK too. Mono would be terrible.
John how do you like that reel the Maxel 25. I did not think it was too good when I used it for blackfish. I did not get a smooth reel in. It was all over the place.
I have both the maxel 20 and 25 and they've been awesome to me.
Thanks.
You're gonna need a bigger boat.
I don't get it, you are not moving the jig at all, is that because the current is fast and that is all the action you need?
Correct. We're moving between 2 and 3.5mph on this trip. Closer to the Full and New Moon you can drift at over 5mph here.
Hi John, what type of boat is that?.. I love it!! Great footage!! 🎣🙏🔥🔥🔥
1986 Grumman 5.0 Meter CC.
What size bucktail and how deep were you fishing? Thanks.
55-95', 6 ounces.
John, take me fishing with you, I can’t look at these blockbuster videos anymore 😅
Go take a party boat trip on the Blackhawk or Hel-cat. You won’t regret it.
John I believe your last boat was a 16’ Starcraft. Always impressed with the seaworthy capabilities of that boat. Im looking at a 2000 Starcraft Fish master 176 with 125 Merc. Would you think it would be similar in performance?
Looks good to me. I googled it.
John for the single bucktails, I’ve noticed that you or your buddy’s have used heavier ones around 6oz. Would you go to a lower weight single bucktail if you are fishing shallower water? Say about 20ft of water
Definitely I would always fish the minimum weight required to not scope out. This trip that was 6 ounces. 5 was not staying down.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks John, I just purchased your jig and bounce dark matter rod and will be going out Friday to try it out. I was thinking of also getting the jig and bounce spinning rod for my son
This what it was like in the Mid 70's in the Race. If you didn't do 1200 pounds a night you were doing something wrong. Enjoy all of your videos

john for some reason i have a hard time getting the spoon down at the gut.. and when i do i of course get snagged like a dummy any tips ?
I always used diamond jigs there due to the current. Great question👍🏼

John are you using a tactical clip or just tying onto the bucktail directly?
direct
A Tie or a dropper loop?
Clinch knot.

No way to a Bimini Top for me.
Got my top and slickers today , really nice stuff. Well worth the 100 bucks.
It's an excellent deal and that gear is very comfortable.
Awesome video as usual
How do you know they were feeding on butter fish?
Saw gulls pick a few.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing 👍🏽
@john are they true to size? the bimini bay suit
The sizing is what I'd expect. I'm wearing an XL jacket because I often wear a hooded sweatjacket underneath. The slickers are Large.
Stamp 32:36 that's my boat in the background 😊
😀🍪
Wow that’s a lot of fish. Incoming and outgoing good?
Incoming best in this location in spring.
Ah the stuff I read about in Saltwater Sportsman as a kid. I do have a question for you though. Do you have any issues/concerns with the auto inflating life vest triggering in the rain?
I disable it.
Great Day What was the Drift Speed this day
2-3.5mph.
You mentioned the current speed - how do you tell?
Was there this morning. Was scoping out with 6 oz jig and 20lb braid. Marked fish but couldn't get attractive presentation. Charter boat was catching with wire line nonsense.
I caught a load of fish there today. Was there between noon and 4pm.
I was there from 7:30 to 11 or so. Damn.
Target the flood in spring if you can. I caught them on 6-ouncers, 3-ways, and spoons.
Always loved fishing in the rain. John, do you run fluoro on your 3way leader?
Yes, but mono would be fine.
Why aren't you on the new JH cat standing under the T top?! Though your boat didn't seem to mind that rough stuff. Great trip!
Long time subscriber here. I have to ask John. I’ve seen you use the spro Bucktail over open bill onshore and offshore this year. Are you liking the spros better?
I have not used any SPROs this year, or in recent memory. Not that there's anything wrong with them.
What Bucktail are you using? It looks just like a Spro. Are you liking those over the open bill?
Is the prime time still around? I know Capt. Mike is gone to be with the Lord but is the boat still fishing the gut? The boat in the distance kind of looks like them
I have not seen it.
Not around so far this year. Had the pleasure of fishing that boat a few times.
Love the videos, I've learned so much. One question 🤔 why would your buddy tuck the rain coat into the bibs? Kinda like underwear or the pants
Just incompetence on my part. I rarely if ever wear bibs and but them in without thinking
Ha! I wondered the same thing!!
Grew up on Long Island, fishing all the time, you kind of piss me of,jealous
And some people would rather play tiddlywinks than football😅
?

Sorry for your losing your mind. Top water bass is awesome
What is your preferred fish to catch?
I kinda agree. I think it's popular because there's not many other options in a Lotta areas
What method do you use? If top water stripers doesnt get your blood pumping, you might be dead.
Maybe you’re just not that great at it? Dunno what to tell ya
