I left Phoenix after 5 years and recently moved to Tucson. I love Tucson. I love being near the mountains. It's a beautiful retro city with a slower pace of life. Very affordable. I finally saw a Javalina near Dominoes pizza. It was so cute!!!

Quite the opposite for me. I am trying to get back to the phoenix area, I HATE Tucson, it's dead dead dead. It simply makes the drive to good places an extra 2 hours each way. You can't go anywhere from Tucson without going back to Phoenix to get there...and there's nothing in tucson to see other than slums. It's only saving grace is a slightly lower cost of living, and that's starting to go away.

I made a trip to Arizona this summer and went back and forth between Phoenix and Tucson a few times. My observation is Tucson always had clear blue sky while Phoenix always had a hazy sky. The temperature in Tucson was noticeably lower. One afternoon, I was eating lunch outside in Tucson, drove to Phoenix right after, got out of the car, o.m.g... no way I would sit outside to eat lunch there.

If you have unlimited resources, Tucson is much nicer. Period. Unfortunately, the working class there is paid miserably compared to the cost of living. If income from a job is important to you, it's no contest. You must live in Phoenix.

A lot of allegations lacking any basis in truth. People earn what their skill set will maximize
. A highly paid rocket engineer makes great money in tucson. If you have the right skill set I’d argue you
live better in tucson than Phoenix as you’ll have less competition in tucson than Phoenix. Of course if you are low skilled, not someone aggressive in advancing your career then yes you will scrape by but that’s the same in any city whether Phoenix, tucson or any metropolitan city.

    • @JRPetruk

I took that into consideration before I commented. Obviously, it doesn't apply to each employment opportunity or person. Tucsonan here. Pretty accurate overall. I'd say the comments about age demographics are overstated. Also, in terms of water scarcity, Tucson's aquifers are in better health than most other parts of Arizona, and improving, but now we're having issues with wells poisoned by the air force base. I would also say that lack of highway infrastructure is less of an issue because Tucson is (somewhat) less sprawled than Phoenix.

Native of tucson, the monsoon is far more active in tucson which is why are dew points and humidity is much higher than in Phoenix, we obviously get more rain which is why on a wet monsoon ragweed, bermuda grass, chilean mesquites grows 2-4 feet tall in so many yards, curbs, and sidewalks in tucson dirty littered unkempt streets, neighborhoods throughout tucson, city government that doesn't care or property owners who don't care native this sad city. Reasons to move to (or from) Phoenix:
    1) 100 degrees in the summer just feels too cold.
    2) Political zaniness is actually something the kids will enjoy learning.
    3) You won't feel out of place as every house on the block looks exactly the same.
    4) You need a car to cross the street.
    5) Has a great Light Rail that also serves as low-income housing.
Reasons to move to (or from) Tucson:
    1) Phoenix Envy... Size does matter.
    2) Old Pueblo isn't just a nickname; it's a selling point.
    3) The planned Crosstown freeway that never is and never will be.
    4) Convenient hourly shuttle service to Phoenix Sky Harbor because no one from Tucson flies out of Tucson.
    5) Desert Landscaping... you'll never have to worry about mowing your cactus.

I would say you nailed it except the water issue. Both cities will eventually have problems with drought and CAP restrictions; however, Tucson years ago went more Xeriscape with its landscaping and built a water reservoir system albeit it is not open lakes. I would say Phoenix is more at risk for water simply because they consume more inefficiently and its hard to shift behavior for a larger city. Hope this helps.

    • @frankgreco

There is no escaping the water issue. You can delay it and it probably won't be really nasty over the next few decades (and in many of our lifetimes), but unless there is a weather anomaly with huge amounts of rain or snow... from a climate trend pov, it's essentially inevitable.

Places to live in Tucson: most of the East side, Catalina Foothills, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, Vail
Places to live in Phoenix: Cave Creek, Gilbert, Chandler
Surface street traffic in Tucson is worse than most of Phoenix due to the lack of freeways.
Tucson does vote more blue but I wouldn't say it's more progressive than Phoenix. Phoenix actually votes in favor of updating their infrastructure, freeways, light-rail, etc.
(They really need to up their bicycle infrastructure). Also most of the area in Phoenix seems to favor annexation bringing more money into the area as 90% of the metro population in Maricopa county is incorporated as opposed to 55% in Pima county. Tucson votes no on most infrastructure projects and constantly fights annexation.

Visited my family in Tucson for 3 weeks only (first time in the US from Guam) in June last year! Def took some time to adjust to dry heat (my nose bled and had to sleep with a humidifier) lmao! Anyways, I found Tucson to be really simple and slow paced, perfect for my elderly parents. However, I think I will very much prefer Phoenix and plan to move there late 2023 for better job opportunities in the marketing/advertising industry (I found that they pay higher for my field in Phoenix compared to Tucson) and I plan to start a family there ☺️ Also to be closer to my family instead of being separated by an ocean and a 22 hour plane ride 🥴.

I find your story intriguing because as an Air Force brat growing up, I lived in both Guam and Phoenix, Andersen AFB and Williams AFB( now Mesa Gateway Airport and ASU East), respectively. We lived in Arizona first and then moved to the island of Guam when I was 8 years-old. What a contrast in terms of climate and culture! Went from hot dry desert to tropical island with typhoons! I did enjoy Guam but being from the states I missed being on a larger landmass and got island fever. Many military brats did. But those are some years I’ll never forget and I long to go back there but tickets are not cheap! And not a quick flight either, like you said! Anyway, good luck to you in your move and being close to family is always a blessing and makes life easier in many ways.

I grew up in Tucson but have lived in the Phoenix metro almost 40 years. Given a choice I would move to Tucson in a heartbeat but wife's job is too good to leave at the moment. Summary: Phoenix has a lower cost of living with many more job opportunities and is a much better place to raise a family (sports, schools, entertainment). It is also much easier to get around by car (although distances tend to be longer) and by air. Phoenix is also more convenient to the rural areas of the state.
