Arkansas vs. Auburn 2000 (SEC Championship)

I was just looking at Arkansas's schedule in this year's SEC Tournament bracket, and then it hit me that it's been 20 years since we won this tournament. I had to come back and watch this video. I remember that 2000 season very well. I was a student at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, but I was still keeping up with the Hogs. I remember coach Richardson was kind of on the hot seat that year because the Hogs were struggling that year during the regular season and he was being criticized by some local sports reporters. I remember John Starr being one of them. The Hogs looked as if they were not going to make the NCAA Tournament that year because of their record. The only way they could make the NCAA tournament if they won the SEC tournament. I remember Wally Hall and John Star counting out Arkansas after the Hogs won their first game of the 2000 SEC tournament. They had doubts that Arkansas could beat LSU and Kentucky, but the Hogs played like a different team in the SEC tournament compared to how they played during the regular season. They played like a team on a mission and could beat any top team in the nation. Joe Johnson and Brandon Dean showed out in this tournament. Joe Johnson showed why he should be a NBA lottery pick in this tournament. The Hogs ended up winning the tournament by beating I think three SEC teams in a row that were top ranked in the nation and those teams were LSU led by Stromile Swift, Kentucky led by Tayshaun Prince, and Auburn. Auburn though was without Chris Porter, their star player because he was suspended for NCAA violations, but they still were a good competitive team even without him. The Hogs ended up going to the NCAA tournament but losing to Miami by one or two points in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. They seemed as if they were worn out by the time they got to the NCAA Tournament because of what they had to do to win the SEC Tournament, but regardless of them losing to Miami in the NCAA Tournament, that 2000 team showed heart and played tough. That team beat the odds and it was one of Nolan Richardson's greatest accomplishments IMO that I'll never forget. I hope this year's team can do the same.

Hard to believe this was 20 yrs ago. I was 7 and in the 2nd grade at the time and I think I might've been back in school (if not a few days away from returning to school) after recovering from having my tonsils, adnoids, and 5 front teeth taken out a few weeks prior by the time this game was played.
Hard to believe this is our lone SEC tournament title win in 13 combined trips in football, basketball, and baseball.
