The NES port of this game might be the most technically impressive, being close in sound and graphics to the original despite the system's limited power while allowing up to four players. I'm honestly surprised given that this game was built around its multiplayer experience that it never got remastered for the N64. As for home computer ports, all of them seem to be quite good, which is a pleasant surprise since a lot of games seem to get a few terrible ones.
Yeah, the Amiga computer here (1985 hardware) is even giving the Genesis a run for its money. Of course the SNES version looks slightly better, and is backed up by the Tim Follin soundtrack, but they all play superbly. Surprisingly, you were getting a *great* experience no matter which 16-bit system you played it on.
Pretty much dignified conversions to all formats. Graftgold wasn't Tiertex and it shows. Quite the overused formula at the time, with Super Sprint and Badlands and the following Indy Heat looking like they came from the same mold, but a lot of fun then.
I remember trying many times at the arcade. The cabinet uses a steering wheel with no resistance at all and it would just free spin left or right as many times as you felt like turning the wheel. I remember thinking how impossible the game seemed hahaha
Played (badly) the heck out of this game on my Amiga... Great fun... Only thing is, there were so many great top down racers on the Amiga, but this one still always managed to be fun...
I like the SNES version, but it had small things I don't like. The music is fine, but some of the sample quality and audio processing sounds off to me. The composition is fine. I find the flag-man animation to be annoying. And I'm not sure who decided to put hay bales on the track that I don't recall in other versions. Again, those are small things and it's still a fun time. I really enjoyed the Genesis/Mega Drive version. The music can be considered rather harsh, but I've always liked it. I like the overall look and feel of it as well, and it's probably my favorite home version of what I have played. I wanted to like the NES version more than I did. It did not play well, in my opinion. But this is interesting to see all the ports for this game.
The SNES version was always my favorite. I kinda wish someone would remake this game. Nothing too fancy, just a new game with the same gameplay and spirit of the original.
SNES version looked best...can't believe i'm saying that, but truth is truth. I do wish they kept the OG intro song, though. That's the only thing that'll make it better. Genesis version was my game though, my sister and I played the crap out of this!
Just tried it on a real Lynx. It really is as bad as it looks in this video. The horizontal scrolling in particular started to make me feel sick after a few minutes. It seems as though the scroll speed is limited to one pixel steps, which can't keep up with the sprites; so every now and again the screen shifts in eight pixel steps to catch up. The controls also feel very odd, the direction your car moves doesn't always correspond to the direction the it's facing. I suspect the vehicle rotation is using more possible angles than there are sprite frames.
I started on the NES version which was good, then I did the Amiga, SNES, SMS, GG and MegaDrive/Genesis versions and the latter remains my favorite version. By the way, I note that the Lynx version is inferior to the GameGear version.
