Could you make video on yoshiyuki tomino ( the creator of Gundam)
Interesting Vid, almost getting Kenny Lauderdale vibes at the end, trying to find anime in weird formats that no one has heard of... DVDs you say?
Also, I had a strange thought about Yasuhiro Yoshiura the other day; whatever happened after Paterma Inverted, nice anime that no one seems to have heard of. It's like Paterma was good, has good reviews, but no one seems to remember it. Very weird tbh.
@@fishfingers4548 they made Sing a Bit of Harmony and might be working on another film or something, they had a stint with working at khara too
I would like to inquire as to the source of the movie, as it looks quite good. I did a search for it, and I could only find the 2002 ADV DVD release.
the version in this version is custom but ive been told on nyaa if you type in the original japanese title you can find the amazon jp rip in HD which is the best quality for sure
This movie sounds like something that due to my age and trauma will fuck me up today, whence in my childhood would've been interestingly colorful.
I'll watch it ASAP.
lol good luck
Because of your age and trauma you should be stronger and more capable of handling things not less. You don't become less mature as you become more experienced.
@@Vespyr_Yes, but I think he meant that the movie still coud be potentially traumatic to him, even at his age.
More people need to see Palme & Nakamura's TV show Fantastic Children. Both are absolute masterpieces that should be celebrated way more
yeah all his work should be for sure
What are they about?
I'm the only person on this planet who's watched Tree of Palme, so it feels extra-special that one of my favorite 'Anime UA-cam Essayists' would personally make a UA-cam video about it just for me and nobody else.
lol i hope a couple more than one person end up watching it
I might have seen it as a child
It was one of those movies you are not sure exist because the memories are so vague and weird
@@slothbaby2104honestly escaflowne was that for me for a while had to do some digging in my teenager years to figure out what it was
I remember seeing this movie as a kid and being utterly traumatized
haha would have been an interesting one
Watched this years ago and it was both profoundly beautiful and hella traumitizing. Honestly shocked that this movie actually exists and wasn't just a fever dream, thank you for covering it!
no worries!
I was first introduced to A Tree Of Palme by your video on the top 100 anime movies and it quickly became on of my all-time favorite movies, so seeing that you made an entire video on it couldn't make me happier haha
Nakamura's work is way too often overlooked nowadays, I would have never discovered A Tree Of Palme without your video and I genuinely don't understand how the movie never got more attention, given how unique and fascinating it is, but also given how big of a project it is
I just find it weird that there aren't more people that know about it, it feels like something that shouldn't be this obscure
It doesnt have the best distribution, hopefully in the future that can change
Im surprised. Ive GENUINELY never heard of this before. Kinda crazy. Not trying to be pretencious, but ive basically, at the very least, have heard about these underground like anime, even if i haven't watched all of them.
But THIS is actually something new. Crazy.
enjoy!
Where can I watch this film?
piracy is the easiest way right now, unless you want to find the old dvd which maybe censored
Such a strange and fantastic film. Also an amazing soundtrack. I hope it gets a Blu-ray release in the future. It deserves far more love than it got on release, and it should be seen and revaluated by more people in the western anime sphere. A forgotten classic made during the end of the cel era.
I see someone showed me the prime version is a legit 1080 rip so at least we have that
@@Stevem I had no clue. Thanks
As someone aspiring to be a manga/anime artist, your channel is unbelievably informative. I love it so much, thank you
I'm so glad!
This sort of reminds me of Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio. This seems like an interesting movie I need to watch now
Hope you enjoy
finally smn on tree of palme
The copyright on the movie is also a nightmare to deal with
I wish this on 964 Pinocchio too
A Tree Of Palme is one of those anime that just slipped through the cracks for me. I've been aware of it for quite a long time but have never sat down and actually watched it. The anination looks amazing and I would love to add this to my collection. The old DVD form ADV is hard to find but I might just have to track a copy down.
i have been told theres a hd rip on nyaa too if you want to see the amazon release, good luck on the dvd though, preferably region 1
I gotta add this one to the list, you've really sold me on it, so unfortunately I can't continue into the spoiler section of the video. I really appreciate how many of your videos spend a lot more time on the influences and production of their subjects than has become typical for youtube essays, rather than simply seeking to be a "book report" on the film.
well you can always watch it and come back ahahha, glad you enjoyed what you saw though
The Tenshi No Tamago/ Angel's Egg vibes are strong with this one
for sure
I thought it felt like Akira.
Stumbled across this movie at around midnight. Stopped before it got very far and found the movie…
And now it’s 3am and I’m in tears.
That was one of the most beautiful movies I’ve seen in my life. Thank you for this video and letting me know such a wonderful and sad and beautiful masterpiece existed.
Also I don’t think of it as Palme dying. In fact, this is a much better ending. After all, he came from a tree and him accepting himself, his true self… goddamn I’m still crying 😭 ❤
Yeah he changed form, but palme as he was known no longer exists
I saw the film on national open television in Mexico. I found it beautiful, complex and deeply emotional. Takashi Nakamura is a very mysterious figure in the medium and he gains a lot of my attention the more I see his work. Thanks for talking about this great movie ✨
thank you for watching !
This movie haunted me throughout my life and until very recently I had thought that it was a fever dream I had when I was a child
Never heard of this movie before i saw your video, and oh boy am i glad that you introduced it to me
Because I just watched it
And i can confidently say that now it is one of my most favourite animated movies
The intricate world it presents, the story and characters, the surreal atmosphere and style... tree of palme is definitely my thing, and if not for you I would have probably never discovered it
Thanks Stevem, you make great content
Love A Tree of Palme so much!!! So many deep powerful psychological and theological themes, and so well paced and visually gorgeous too, with so many more ecological themes built in to the visual design. Has to be one of the most underrated movies of all time. I seriously hope that Criterion picks it up one day; it would be perfect for it, especially seeing as it’s not on any streaming services.
Ive heaard today nyaa has a rip of the hd amazon version which is probs the best way to watch it now , hopefully someone saves it and it gets a proper release in future on disc
@@Stevem I first saw it on UA-cam, but cause I was afraid it could be taken down at any moment and I loved it so much (and I wanted to more easily share it with people), I bought a vintage DVD of it n eBay. But I feel Palme, Angel’s Egg, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, and Keiichi Hara’s Colorful are all anime movies that seriously deserve a Criterion release, if distribution rights allow.
@@andrewkawam2603 maybe im not sure if criterion has done any prior, i think they did GITS? Im not sure
@@Stevem They released Paprika and Mind Game on their streaming service I know for sure.
The Amazon Prime version seems to be legit & there's rips of it about if people are looking I've only just found the rip after someone pointed it to me lol a bit late since this footage might be slightly wrong on the aspect ratio front
Great vid. I honestly had no idea this film existed and I’m amazed. It’s right up my alley. Really need to watch it in full.
Hope you enjoy!!!!
omg,i was looking for this name for years and couldnt find it,wanted to rewatch it so much, thank you kind sir. I saw it as a kid,but didnt know the name or how exactly to find it,all i could remember perfectly from it is than he killed a dear.
Thanks for making a video on this, I never did get to watching it since your 100 anime movies video but perhaps I will someday.
I'm glad you got the help you needed and it's really interesting when media becomes a comfort in our life. Ironically, as an introvert I became more social towards the end of my school days and throughout college due to anime. So there definitely is some power in entertainment to make us stronger.
yeah it happen at a time id really resonate with it
Finally somebody is talking about this movie! I remember watching it and it was a surreal experience, still seems like a fever dream. The only thing I can remember is that I was really annoyed with the robot boy because he was a little psycopath
You deserve more attention, absolutely adore your channel. Shared your video on instagram
appreciate any sharing, especially with this video, got a lot against it being picked up by the algo
Not really.
well even if you dont agree thanks for still giving the video more engagement, very kind
Ooh. I saw this movie recently and loved it. Even I, as dense as I am, realized this movie was really about broken people learning to overcome and break thw cycle, but the story doesn't beat you over the head with it.
I really like this movie. The animation is *chef's kiss*.
I'm glad to get to show the movie to more people
Thank god for you STEVEM always pointing us in the direction of the stuff that scratches that itch
hoope you enjoy!
I really thought I was the only person who had ever seen this surreal epic lol
I've always had a very strong personal attachment to Pinocchio, the story of the wooden boy. Tree of Palme is one of my personal favorite versions of the story, although it is the most different from the original, it is also somehow faithful to it. The story, characters and setting have nothing to do with the original, but Palme really does resemble Pinocchio in some ways. He may not have been as cheeky as the original Pinocchio, but he was just as flawed, just as human in character, even though he wasn't human.
I personally also really like the ending, in all versions of the story Pinocchio gets what he wished for, which was to become a real boy, Palme didn't manage that, but fulfilled his role as an ark. He turned back into a tree and couldn't live forever with those he loved, but he brought peace to the world, as you said, this movie is about/for the broken, the wounded people, and Palme not only healed himself, but also the people he met, along the way, even to the antagonists.
Anyway, thank you for this vid, I really hope, that this amazing movie gets the recognition it deserves.
Pinocchio was always meant to be dark and twisted, but also hopeful.
thank you for the comment, and yes there's at least a lot of hope in its ending
There is a fascinating... do I call it irony? To how despite this was a demonetized and possibly even blacklisted video that I found this through a random UA-cam recommendation.
Good video on a fascinating subject.
honestly done a lot better than i expected, since its both obscure and demonetised for me
Wow I don't think I've ever heard of this movie but you've got me absolutely hooked to check it out, thank you
Im glad!
Finally. A truly dark Pinocchio adaptation.
Not that there's anything wrong with the other two.
pinocchio really has had all kinds of versions over the years
This reminds me of 2001s Artificial intelligence.
there's some stuff there, though their productions overlap so i imagine it's more coincidence
sounds very very underrated
it's interesting though i can see why it doesnt resonate with everyone
Wow, everything you show a clip of from 18:20 onwards looks absolutely amazing
Id recommend his shorts they're all on UA-cam
Beautiful & underrated, good mention🕵🏻♀️🎑
thank you for watching!
Saw this film at an anime convention, had forgotten the name, nice to revisit it. I still remember
how unsettling that deer scene was
Yeah it's pretty uncomfortable
Hey like good job on this video I can tell you really cared while making it and that’s something that’s hard to come across on UA-cam now so thank you
thank you for watching!
Ah yes, Tree of Palme. Such a beautiful yet very melancholic film, to say the least. I especially loved the world-build in this film seeing various landscapes is so unique and alien along with the desert environment which totally gives me Dune vibe. Plus, the animation quality helps resonates those elements in this film that still hold to this day. Also, poor Palme, having to endure such a hardship in such a short frame of time, all while losing his mother figure and unable to process his feelings of losing a parental guardian and moving forward to find a new purpose while having such a fragile heart, naivety and challenges to understand the world around him. Especially born as a hollow shell puppet that cannot fully understand and connect to human emotions deeply enough was a tragic sight to see. Wanting to get the wishes he fought so hard to become 'human' only for it to be nothing that he hoped for. But at least in the end, he can finally rest easily in an isolated land as a peaceful tree where nobody can disturb except for Popo watching closely to him was a wish that Palme never would have dreamt of till now. Finally, moving past his guilts and regrets thus, The Tree of Palme. I would give it a 9/10.
great movie fr
I love this. I love that Pinocchio is being used as a vessel to tell such interesting and beautiful stories about life, death, mortality, and what it means to be human. I love both the stop motion version made by del toro and I’m glad you’ve shown me this. I’ll be on the lookout for this film😋 also, have you watched redline?
i made a video about redline a couple years back ive seen it a fair few times, even made some pretty popular twitter threads on common misconceptions with the movie
Hah yes - I literally watched this for the first time a few weeks ago. Incredible animation, I thought it had an Akira like weight to it that I don't see very often and then looking into it found out why. I haven't tried catnapped yet though...
it's quite fun,
I didn't know it used cels, I didn't notice while watching the film, though my copy is sub-HD. ANN does credit two different companies for digital paint.
it's cels but because of the digital shots they would have also used digipaint for those moments, but you can literally buy the cels for the movie online
This movie is insane and beautiful
Was wondering when Palme would pop up on the channel, Wonderful examination as always!
thank you!
I thought you were going to talk about Del Toro's Pinocho. But this one also feels up there in dark tone
Tree of Palme is an absolutely gorgeous movie, not perfect, but still gorgeous. It has been a while since I have watched it, but I still remember that feeling of not really vibing with it. And perhaps that can be attributed to its long run-time and bloated long scenes.
Videos like these really help me see the soul of the production that I might not always catch for one reason or another. This reallly does make me want to go look at older anime from the 90s that I might not even know about.
Anne of the Green Gables and Heidi were nice enough, though I prefered Heidi just a teeny bit over Anne.
a lot of cool anime out there!
OH MY GOD! I am so glad someone is talking about this movie
I hope more people talk about it
Ooh, definitely going to check this out soon if I can. I’ve been an Astro Boy and general Tezuka fan for a bit now, so robot Pinocchio adaptations are right up my alley! (Always wondered why people never mentioned Astro when Pinocchio is discussed, as Tezuka was pretty obviously influenced by the story?)
I've seen it mentioned over the years but I guess it's because astroboy as a text goes way beyond that original Pinocchio setup
I watched it....holy shit, why hadnt i found this sooner?
i guess its hard to come by randomly since there's been no western releases in a good 20 years
Still no high resolution release.
The sadness never ends.
Only found out recently after I made this video but the amazon rip is actually on nyaa, but you have to type in palme no ki

He made Harmony?! That one was insane I wouldn't say good, but definitely unique!

Even though it's a very flawed movie, I always found A Three of palm really engaging. I remember watching It several times on TV, late at night. And that's really the perfect way to watch that kind of films, sometimes you watch It from beginning to end, some other Time you just watch the ending or some other random segment in the middle, and other times you're a little tired, you're just zapping around the channels, and for some reason It catches you're attention AND you leave It on, suddenly you're even drifting in and Out of sleep, you get certain moments and when you remember you're not sure if they were part of a movie or a part of you're dreams.
be an interesting film to see on late night tv
Can you believe the film Is on YT with Spanish subtitles? I gotta admit, your essay made me pay more attention to the details, and that's the only reason I didn't get lost with all the worldbuilding and background of the characters
i didnt know they proper full thing is on youtube i saw some which were on the site but they had music issues
You all ways have a wonderful video up I am a big fan of this anime artist
I saw Tree of Palme as a child, borrowed it from the library in my city. For years I've been trying to remember the title. And only remembered it truly because of this video. I tried to find it but only a fifty dollar (USD) dvd on amazon was what i could find. It's saddening. of all the things i could have "forgotten to return" to the library, why wasn't it Tree of Palme. (I'm joking of course.... kind of)
On the website nyaa they have the new Amazon prime rip after looking through it is a stark improvement from .dvd but we really do need a new release
I’d be fascinated to read the novel adaptation
i'd like to as well

Finally one other video about this movie. Got its such a gorgeous movie and the soundtrack is so good, but I never see people talking about it. Sometimes on message boards I reply to my own questions I asked years ago about it not realising they were mine 😆
I'm hoping this video helps!
This movie haunted me since i first saw at it when i was a kid. I love and hate Palme no ki. It's beautiful, horrifying, sad and amazind. It subconsciously influences my art till this day.
I'm so glad that FINALLY someone talks about this movie. It deserves some love

A Tree of Palm is incredible, one of my favorites. Probably one of the most underrated movies in history, like it's hard to even create a cult following because it's not available on blu ray or streaming in english (I think it's only available in some streaming in Japan)

I imagine that this movie really went thtough a crazy production cause its so unfocused. I like it but many things from the story prevent me from really liking or loving. Like the spirit of the blue woman that in the end is causing the afliction in Palm and the only thing I could feel is how this undermines his character. Not only it kinda comes from nowere but also lessens Palm since its not all his pain or problems of him being a robot. But some ghost in him. I think this is really dumb. Probably my favorite parts of the movie is the begining that is so weird, it really feels like a Moebius comic but with cute anime characters. And the very end when he accept his fate and them we see this beautiful otherworldly tree that almost make the pain of his death/transformation not so bad. But it really could have been something really fantastic but ended just a extremely beautiful but weird curious movie. Unfortunatly probably due all those problems while being made.
I dont agree really, those problems are still there for palme but the blue fairy here has also ended up corrupting him in some way but those insecurities are still his. The entire journey was created by her and she was there to try and keep him on the journey.
@@Stevem I guess. Still her story of being from a warrior race or somethign and putting her ghost inside of him feel out place even for such outlandish movie. Maybe if she was a inventor like Palms creator and managed to put her mind in a machine that before dying she conected to palm or something more close to the overall artificial person thing it would be less jarring. But thats just my feelings to it.
