I recommend starting the engine on warmer days. Helps keep seals lubricated and in good shape. Engines can burn oil or leak after sitting for long periods of time. Valve seal, and other can dry out
Great video, thank you! Here are my notes: Oil Change Fill Fuel Tank with Fuel Stabilizer Disconnect Negative Battery Terminal Max Rated Air Pressure for your Tires Leave Parking Break off Open a Moisture-Eater/ Desiccant Container - 1-2 are recommended Moth balls in the engine bay - something to keep critters from soy based wires Stuff a rag under each arm of the windshield wiper - keep it suspended Keep key handy if it needs to be moved in an emergency Car Covers are critical - Wash & wax car before covering
I just bought a new car and want to keep my 10 year old Accord stored away for my daughter until she's ready to drive. You were by far the best in every way in discussing the important elements of this process.
I also put MaxxCatch sticky pads under the engine and in the trunk, on top of the engine and in the car. Yeah, overkill, but I had a couple of mice get into my 2004 Vette AFTER I removed the pads to take it out for a run and then forgot to put them back again. Excellent vid with tips and straight up honesty! Thanks, Cooley!
Finally, glad to see your video... I almost deleted the UA-cam app thinking why bother since there is nothing good to watch. Just In Time! By the way, instead of an old rag, I use two toy tennis balls (softer than regular tennis balls) to prop-up the wipers by their wiper arms...in case I forget to take them off before turned on the wipers, the tennis balls will just roll off with the wipers wipe on...
I like this idea. I’m in a humid area and I think the small amount of felt on a tennis balls is better to have under there than a rag that could accumulate moisture
My stepfather had this exact vehicle, with the big block engine, in flawless condition. In 1975 he traded it in at the local Ford dealership, for a discount on a new no-option Pinto.
This is all i do. Use fuel conditioner, fill tank, put on bald tires, and disconnect the negative terminal. In the Spring, starts right up like a champ. Been doing this for 10 years. No problems.
I was wondering, I store my car for 5 months in the heat of Arizona. I was told to put carpet under all the tires? I have been putting it on 1X 6 pine wood pieces. What's your thinking.
WHAT ELSE please, for a 2012 Prius, winter climate, outdoor storage on cement, two months away... Is there a simple fuse i can disconnect? (Wont do a trickle charger tho)
Most things I agree. However to save trouble start the car twice a week if possible in the winter, and drive it around for 15 minutes, and that's even at slow speeds. Use a damp cloth that's a microfiber towel to wipe around before replacing car cover. MAKE SURE WHEN PLACING CAR COVER WHEN P!ARKED OUTDOORS, TO LOOK OVER CAR TO BE SURE THERES NO BIRD POOP YOU ARE COVERING UP ACCIDENTALLY. Car should be fine after winter. If one is away all winter or weeks at a time ; have a friend start the car weekly at the bare minimum.
also, if the maximum recommended pressure is say 44 PSI, you can go to the gas station, get it to 44, then drive to the storage location. its ok to drive on 44, especially since you'll only be doing it briefly. so you don't actually need any of this equipment.
2:34 can someone provide some more info on the "quick disconnect for the ground side of the battery"? is this some sort of device you purchase or does every battery have this?
I have a question regarding Auto Stop/start. Has there been any data showing the relationship between fuel savings vs loss of starter service life? I wonder if the cost of replacing a starter motor sooner compares with the savings on fuel consumption. Are modern starter motors robust enough to handle so many starts? Thank you. I watch every episode of your informative and entertaining show.
That's a beautiful car; the '67 & '68's were the best looking of the Cougar line. Wanna swap it for my '92 LeBaron convertible? (OK, stop laughing now.)
i thought the title said "how to stole a car the right way" and that's why i clicked. well at least this is going to be useful once i got the car i guess...
Remove distributor.Attach oil pump primer "Run oil pump with slow speed on drill machine for about a minute. Full lubrication without moving any internal engine parts. (Except oil pump of course )
i have a couple questions. Should i use a fuel stabilizer on my car even if i only plan to run it and drive once a week during winter? And i should still leave the parking brake on since my cart is manual?
I leave my parking brake on and haven't had any ill-effects but if it concerns you, you could simply use wheel chocks to prevent the car from rolling. Also consider using non-ethanol fuel (if you can find it) when storing your car...lasts a lot longer than the 10% ethanol fuel. Stabilizer is always good for any fuel that won't get used up within 2 months or so.
from my research, I've found that you can put dryer sheets under the hood and that should protect the engine. don't think you need to go underneath the car for this step.
Why is every Cooley video filled with comments about how all everyone wants is more Cooley videos, yet we still don’t get videos more often? Is there something we’re missing as to why roadshow directly ignores its viewers?
Man I miss you doing car reviews.
they should give cooley his own channel, i watch his podcasts all the time, and i fell like Cooley deserves his own UA-cam channel.
Hey Cooley, i wish you make videos more frequently.
I recommend starting the engine on warmer days.
Helps keep seals lubricated and in good shape.
Engines can burn oil or leak after sitting for long periods of time.
Valve seal, and other can dry out
U mean i have to drive it at least 2 times per month for like 10-15 minutes
Great video, thank you!
Here are my notes:
Oil Change
Fill Fuel Tank with Fuel Stabilizer
Disconnect Negative Battery Terminal
Max Rated Air Pressure for your Tires
Leave Parking Break off
Open a Moisture-Eater/ Desiccant Container - 1-2 are recommended
Moth balls in the engine bay - something to keep critters from soy based wires
Stuff a rag under each arm of the windshield wiper - keep it suspended
Keep key handy if it needs to be moved in an emergency
Car Covers are critical - Wash & wax car before covering
I didn’t see him signing off on moth balls in this video…
5:58 IM DYING!!!! XD
6:50 Some modern models you can crank with accelerator all the way down to avoid cylinders firing (Clear flood mode)

Thanks for sharing this helpful information.
Always enjoy your segments, miss your car reviews though...
Excellent tips Brian.

Any other ideas on how to deter rodents? I opened my glovebox to find my inspection papers nibbled on in a 2022 Tesla M3
The greatest tips 👍🏻 Thank you

Nice helpful video

Useful. Following all the steps tomorrow.
Brian, put together your own channel on cars and we'll all subscribe in a heartbeat.
Thank you for your videos.
this video is highly underrated...
Thank you
"enjoy the spring" he says at the begining of november
Dusty Beckett... you seem confused... he means that’s when you’d be driving the car again after the winter storage period...
Yeah, the implication was after winter was done and it's spring again.
Right ? 😂
My stepfather had this exact vehicle, with the big block engine, in flawless condition. In 1975 he traded it in at the local Ford dealership, for a discount on a new no-option Pinto.

what kind of stablizers could I use for a diesel engine? or is the product used in this video made for all fuel types?
Cooley is MY copilot!!!
This is all i do. Use fuel conditioner, fill tank, put on bald tires, and disconnect the negative terminal. In the Spring, starts right up like a champ. Been doing this for 10 years. No problems.

Awesome video! Great presentation. You seem like a cool guy.
So assuming my oil is not in need of replacement do you recommend changing it yearly or can new oil sit year after year as long as Milage remains low?
Use super unleaded with no ethanol to full up gas with.
Thanks !
Just in time, thanks
Was going to make a video about this however you have done an excellent job covering this topic 👍
Hey quick question can I store it in a hot environment storage or in a controlled cooling system storage? Thank you
WHAT ELSE please, for a 2012 Prius, winter climate, outdoor storage on cement, two months away... Is there a simple fuse i can disconnect? (Wont do a trickle charger tho)
Does fuel stabilizer apply to diesel engines too ?
What color is that green cougar called ?
Lovely vid and submariner
What’s the solution for outdoors, he just said deal with it. Should I pour gravel under to have better drainage and minimize dirt splash-up 0:42
Will this work if I park my car for 3 months during the summer in Austin, Texas?
On a modern car you can remoce tge efi fuse and/or coils on plug's connectors and crank the car for a bit then replace them and away you go

3:33 what equipment is displayed in this shot? aka what tools will i need in order to inflate the tires to the maximum rated pressure?
portable air tank, retractable hose, and quick connect fitting
also, if the maximum recommended pressure is say 44 PSI, you can go to the gas station, get it to 44, then drive to the storage location. its ok to drive on 44, especially since you'll only be doing it briefly. so you don't actually need any of this equipment.
I was told that grounding the car helps keep it from conducting moisture too
2:34 can someone provide some more info on the "quick disconnect for the ground side of the battery"? is this some sort of device you purchase or does every battery have this?
you can search google for "battery disconnect." its a type of device.
I'm told not to use Stable, but my 98 Firebird uses regular gas. Wouldn't using premium fuel hurt it?
I have a question regarding Auto Stop/start. Has there been any data showing the relationship between fuel savings vs loss of starter service life? I wonder if the cost of replacing a starter motor sooner compares with the savings on fuel consumption. Are modern starter motors robust enough to handle so many starts? Thank you. Cars with auto stop/start tend to have specific starters and batteries to support the feature.
Do i have to do that for 2 months storage.
That's a beautiful car; the '67 & '68's were the best looking of the Cougar line. Wanna swap it for my '92 LeBaron convertible? (OK, stop laughing now.)
Ironically I found this video while attempting to find out how to store this exact vehicle!
i thought the title said "how to stole a car the right way" and that's why i clicked.

Jonathan Engström or just get a toyota or honda lol

What about a convertible top can't find a video
Do you still work at CNET?
Where can I buy an old stored car that has never been driven before?
OG
You did this video last year...
Someone owns a nice Cougar X-R7 !

Good video except you referring to "Hillbilly " not cool. Here in Virginia mountains, 😊we are smarter than a fifth grader.

Cement vs. concrete learn the difference.
Was not this Guy on Breaking Bad ?? The guy who owned the Fried Chicken Outlets !! Lol
Los Autos Hermanos
@@TheChupacabra LMAO !!! Tats a good one !!
How about EV?
Cooley makes it cool to have a car.
Akinlolu Oderinde New york, take note
How about filling the car with gas without Ethanol? Mothballs for rodents?
That hard stuff you see each day is concrete; cement is one of the ingredients to make concrete. Common mistake .
Thanks!
