Hello I'm looking to do the same. Does swapping out a 10 speed to a 12 speed ever require a different free hub? Does using a 12 speed cassette from a boost hub on a non boost 10 speed bike work?
Thank you thank you for this video build! I have 2x10 set up and almost have to settle for sram nx 1x11 due to my wheel can fit gx eagle. Now this is my next upgrade even it's 11-50 instead 10-50, and heavier. This will save me so much money and weight!

You could have used an nx or sx eagle cassette because they use the standard shimano driver and not the xd but still a great way to get around your problem
I just ordered the eagle 12 speed kit, gx shifter, gx derailleur, gx chain and the NX 12 speed cassette 11-50 which fits my Shimano driver hub, this kit is going on my 2019 Rocky Mountain Blizzard 20 fatbike, I can't wait for it to come in! Great video!
Been there, done that, it works great... 👌🏽, currently using the 12speed sunrace cassette, sram gx shifter and shimano 11speed derailleur...??? 🤯, yes I'll repeat it, shimano 11speed derailleur and it shifts smooth like butter...😁👌🏽
Mine won’t fit idk if there’s a difference between hubs depending on the cassette or what but I did the same thing. You can’t install the cassette wrong. My hub isn’t long enough like the body itself. When I put the last cog on it won’t grab the teeth.
I would have swapped out that rear hub and converted to SRAM XD. This would have allowed you to use the SRAM GX 10-50 or 10-52 cassette. For chain sizing on a HT bike. Add 3-4 links when measuring chain over chain ring and largest gear on the cassette

Ten years ago I was searching and striving to find a diy solution to fit a larger, 40+T cog on the cassette... and people laughed at me, saying "what the hell do you need such a big sprocket for? You'll end up pedaling without actually moving anywhere!" Back then, even the 14-36T freewheels were frowned upon and mountain bikes were sporting 32t at best. With a 32T *small* chainring. Now these cassettes are actually in high demand and pretty pricey...
Don't for get to lube the threads for the cassette retainer since you have two different metals in contact. Same for attaching the deraileur to the frame. Failure to do so can cause these parts to seize the next time you go to remove them.
BTW, have you checked your rear hub manufacturer's offer? They might have an XD driver freehub replacement part. IFAIK only Shimano does not supply such a replacement for their hubs. Decent hubs from other manufacturers should have this option available.
Sir! To me it sounds like you know what you are talking about! I am going to bring up a subject that most tech bikes freak out when I bring this up!!!! "I WANT A 3X12 DRIVETRAIN!" I hope you put some serious thought into this idea and then make it happen!!!! Please atleast think about!!!!!
What I found out the problem to be is not the number of speeds but rather the missing bigger 50-51-52 tooth cogs on smaller speed cassettes. I can't imagine why would you need an 11 tooth on MTB. I've changed from 2 x 8 to 1 x 11 and I've never used anything after 8th speed and the bike is even used fairly often on the road as a commuter. I could have stayed which the 8 speeds, just give me 52T ring :D
EXCELLENT video and great information! Thank you! Unless I didn't notice it you did NOT change the chain ring to a 12 speed? The 12 speed chain will work ok with the 10 speed chain ring? Thank you.
Great video, made the changes with 12 speed gx Derailer shifter and chain, Sunrace CSMZ90 cassette. Can’t get the derailer to shift into the largest cog, any ideas?
Great video. I thought I would have to upgrade my rear wheel to SRAM XD to go 1x12 until coming across your video and the Sunrace cassette. Many thanks
Great video! Do I understand correctly that the gx 1x12 fits a Shimano 8/9/10 hub? I have a formula dc22 hub with a 2x8 drivetrain that I’d like to make 1x12.
That is my dad's patented chainwhip! He made it from an old metal ruler and old bits of chain. Maybe I should do a video on it? It's interesting! He pushed a spare pin through a hole in the ruler, which allowed the chain to stay on there. It's got a Wal-Mart Bell Grip for a handle.
Nice video, thank you, I have a 3x9 Shimano XT right now and would like to swap to a sunrace CSMZ91 12speeds cassettes, I won't need to change the freehub?
Hi just came across your sram 12s conversion (Shimano Hub) I’ve just only converted my Focus HT ebike from 9s to 10s using Shimano Linkglide system….Wow what a difference…. however I’m a sucker for the new electronic sram asx etap shifter/derailleur and need to know if can I fit the 12s cassette onto DT Swiss wheel 10s 3paw hub or do I require a new 12s hub ? Furthermore will I need to replace my 34T chain ring and cranks ? My ebike Focus Jarifa2 appears to have sufficient clearance for chain movement to large cog at rear !
The only down shot this is the cassette weight. Some of these are cheap and up to 650 grams. The hollowed out high end cassetts are the best choice. Xdome i think they are called. But carry a big price tag.
Very helpful. I have searching on line and u did it. My opinion is that it depends on ur hub width. My mtb bike is 8 speed and has shimano standard hub which are 35mm wide. Can u tell the width of the shimano hub on which u have installed 12 speed ??
@@sergiomapt it's the MZ903 11-51tooth. Fits perfect on my 10speed shimano hub. I got this with the 12speed slx derraileur and shifter. Working perfectely for the last. 2months...but the 12speed chain will not work with this cassete,. I purchase a kmc.
Super light Scott scale with a cassette weighing over 500g I just upgraded to a Sram XX1 groupset 11speed. I don’t need 12 speed and I got a great deal as everyone seems to be skipping 11speed for 12? Oh and my cassette only weighs 270g
Great to see you exploring the possibilies of groupset cross compatibilitiy however the biggest red flag for me after seeing this video would be the chainline. You did not replace your crankset. Most significantly (although still also prevelent in some 10 speed set ups) when running 11 and 12 speed the front chainring needs to migrate 2.5-3mm outwards (also referred to as boost spacing) to give the optimum chainline for all the cogs on the back, I can clearly see with your setup that the chainline is incorrect and possibly this is why you decided not to include the audio when indexing the gears as I can only assume it was quite apparent. Additionally these cassettes are only meant to be run with certain sized rear wheel spacing, I believe 148mm is the minimum with 135mm / 142mm again contributing to improper and ultimately unrectifiable chainline. Having inproper chainline not only prematurly wears out your drive chain but it can also lead to serious mechanical failures when out on the trail as the chain is more susceptible to binding and seizing against the cogs and even jockeywheels in some cases which will cause your deraillieur to twist and mech hanger to fail. Park tool have some great videos on this which may help you in the future!
I don't think the chainline is an issue on this, actually, because he wasn't changing from a non-boost hub to a boost hub. He was just fitting 12 speeds into the same space as the previous 10 speeds on the same non-boost hub. But had he switched to a boost hub (not even possible because the frame is likely not boost compatible) he would have needed to move the front chainring outboard.
actually he dont he sells more shifters chains and derailleur wich in other case he would not sell cuz not everyone want to change hub and pay for overpriced cassette aswell
I get that you are joking, so bear with me: Making a transmission inside the frame? Hell yes! All that weight shifted to the center of the bike is awesome! 12 Chainrings? Harsh. The Shifting gets donen on the back because there the tension on the chain is defined only by the derailleur, not power pedalling.
Great Video. advise please ; i currently have Cassette Shimano HG50, 11-36, 10 speed, and wanting to upgrade to SRAM GX1 x 12 Eagle Drivechain will this work or not if not what would you sugest
The one thing you don't get on the standard Shimano hub compared to the XD Free Body or the Shimano Micro Spline, is a 10t high gear, due to the larger diameter standard Shimano freebody. Also the higher end X1 X0 cassettes that require XD are probably lighter.
Why is it that the sun race fits the stock Shimano hub but the seam doesn’t? I just installed the SRAM NX groupset onto my diamondback and the freehub body itself isn’t long enough to support the very last cog, the smallest one.
I just want to know so I‘m getting it right. You had a shimano 10 gear hub at the back and switched to a 12 gear cassette. That‘s cool I‘m also thinking about setting my 3 by up to a 1 by system, but I want to get a good gear ratio. Do you think it should work like yours?
Hi there I wanna make my own bike for cheap but wanna go for a SRAM but I won a mtb bicycle with a 135mm spacing would a 12 speed sram SX, NX or GX work with a wheel which says 11 speed?
Man picturing this being better with a 3x12 would be way better. Including if his front small gear ratio was smaller like 10or less then 20tooth. and his high gear was like 50+. This would give so much torque speed, and way fast top speed.
Are you happy with this conversion? How is it riding? I am considering this with my 3×8 TREK 2012 Gary Fisher Yahoo. I love the bike, but hate the front finicky/detracting 3x gear derailer.
I have a 3x9 27.5" XC bike with a 11-34T 9speed Cassette ("CS-HG300-9")... I`m planning to upgrade it to a 1x12 drivetrain... Do you think the Sunrace cassette will work on my hub?
They do weigh a ton. The weight of that cassette is monstruous. One could save 230 grams by spending an extra 100€ on a garbaruk 11-50. That is a spectacular weight saving per €/dollar/whatever ratio.
This is my biggest niggle about these types of system too. Only reason for going so wide range is because you want to ride climbs AND fast fire roads. You're basically adding more than the weight of an extra chainring to a rotating mass component. Anything bigger than 42 I'd be going 2X11 TBH. Fitted a 1X12 system to a bike for a customer the other week and it left me very unimpressed, even though I'm running 1X11 on 2 of my bikes. Next investment for me will be DI2 2X11 with a single shifter.
I got the SRAM NX 12 speed but its a but too large for my Shimano 135mm hub. It comes out flush with my lock nut which means the 11 tooth is a 1-2mm from my frame. Will this produce the same result? Or will it fit a 135mm hub?
Great video. Are you sure your dad bike was 10 speed set up as you removed a spacer. I had 3x10 shimano which came without spacer, I have upgraded it to a 1x11 with shimano slx
Hey mate, like that Video. I also want to upgrade my gear set to sram Gx Eagle but without the Sram Cassette, like you did with your Dad. So my question is, I’m using currently a 1x10 Shimano Deore gear set, would a CSMX 90 Sunrace 11-50 cassette fit in to rear hub ? Would be very thankful if you could help. With best regards

I assume the bike was a 2 x 10 before? I'd like to know what you did to the front to accommodate the 1 x.
Super light Scott scale with a cassette weighing over 500g
I just upgraded to a Sram XX1 groupset 11speed. I don’t need 12 speed and I got a great deal as everyone seems to be skipping 11speed for 12? Oh and my cassette only weighs 270g
Nice conversion Jordan. Don’t listen to the torque dorks and weight weinies.
Cool bike !
Sram Must be hating sunrace right about now
actually he dont he sells more shifters chains and derailleur wich in other case he would not sell cuz not everyone want to change hub and pay for overpriced cassette aswell
We call this supply-side economics. Cheers!
DUPPSS yes this is what my ibis mojo hd4 stock setup. Nx groupset w/ a shimano hub. Thanks for the video thinking to go 12 from 11 speed.awesome job!
Next video. Puting 12 speeds on the front
I get that you are joking, so bear with me:
Making a transmission inside the frame?
Great video!
Was trying to figure out the XD Free Body conversion, you skipped it.
Did it workout ok in the long run?🙄
We didn’t do the XD conversion. This is the way you do it on a shimano hub. It’s still rolling! Works perfectly fine!
The one thing you don't get on the standard Shimano hub compared to the XD Free Body or the Shimano Micro Spline, is a 10t high gear, due to the larger diameter standard Shimano freebody. Also the higher end X1 X0 cassettes that require XD are probably lighter.
SRAM NX is compatible with a standard Shimano free hub.
Why is it that the sun race fits the stock Shimano hub but the seam doesn’t? I just installed the SRAM NX groupset onto my diamondback and the freehub body itself isn’t long enough to support the very last cog, the smallest one.
Would I need a longer free hub? I currently have a 7 s hub . Thank you for the awesome video
He can't tell.
Also I'm pretty sure you have a freewheel and not cassete
No, it will fit
I just want to know so I‘m getting it right. You had a shimano 10 gear hub at the back and switched to a 12 gear cassette. That‘s cool I‘m also thinking about setting my 3 by up to a 1 by system, but I want to get a good gear ratio. Do you think it should work like yours?
The problem is you are stuck with 11 tooth sprocket using the Shimano free hub or Sram Eagle LX but with XD free hub you can go to 10 tooth.
Thank you guys!
wow that's actually genius
Do you have issues with backpedaling in the 50 cog?
Can i fit 12 speed caseet on 9 speed hub idk?
It appears that you have forgotten to install the "dork disc" behind the cassette. 🤓
Well yeah but it would need a much longer derailleur cage to accommodate the massive range of gears
Hi does the chain drops down the sprocket when u back pedal?
Are you happy with this conversion? How is it riding?
I am considering this with my 3×8 TREK 2012 Gary Fisher Yahoo. I love the bike, but hate the front finicky/detracting 3x gear derailer.
Muito top essa bike!
I have a 3x9 27.5" XC bike with a 11-34T 9speed Cassette ("CS-HG300-9")... I`m planning to upgrade it to a 1x12 drivetrain... Do you think the Sunrace cassette will work on my hub?
you have NX now, which fits shimano hub
heavier than sunrace
Just did the same conversion. and everything is working great except the shift from 46 to 37 that just wont go. not sure why only this gear.
Guessing you mean this cassette: "CSMZ90 WA5"? The linked csmx80 is 11sp (according to manufacturer).
I did! I am going to correct it in the description. I copied the link wrong! Thank you!
So this works on any hub with a Shimano free hub?
Nice job
I got the SRAM NX 12 speed but its a but too large for my Shimano 135mm hub. It comes out flush with my lock nut which means the 11 tooth is a 1-2mm from my frame. Will this produce the same result? Or will it fit a 135mm hub?
Due to the change in chain. You should have replaced the chainring at the same time.
We did, but the chainring hadn't made it in yet! He went to a 34t AbsoluteBlack Oval Chainring!
Great video. Are you sure your dad bike was 10 speed set up as you removed a spacer. I had 3x10 shimano which came without spacer, I have upgraded it to a 1x11 with shimano slx
If he had an 11spd hub then yes he needed the spacer.
If any given bike comes with an Eagle drive train, does that mean a Shimano cassette would not fit on the rear freehub?
Im running on a 1x9 shimano setup and planning to upgrade to a 1x12 sram. Can I also use the sunrace cogs with my current hub?
Yeah as long as youre using a shimano freehub body it should fit
Noob question here, planning to set up a Hope pro 4 Xd and sram eagle 12 speed. Will GX eagle fit with the XD drive? Thanks
Yes
Did u have to change the hub....im looking at doing this but my current hub is an 8 speed
So would the Sunrace Cassette fit on my 1x10 Shimano rear hub ?
Thx in advance
