If you put that huge cassette on... which is way larger than the dork disc behind it, you have to use the XXL dork disc from Shimano. They are currently out of stock, but Shimano will fedex them to you as soon as they are available again. They also offer a special carbon super dork disc, for only U$ 149,- for those of you who want outstanding performance at low weight.
You might have been able to even keep the old derailleur since the shift lever is what actually controls how much cable is taken in or let out with each shift. You just have to adjust the high and low set screws on the derailleur assuming it's a compatible shimano.
This is only true if you're using a friction style shift mechanism. The shift spacing for 8,9,10 ect are all slightly different. Yes you can extend the travel of your derailleur, but you won't have smooth shifts into every gear using the wrong shifter.
If it's of any help, the Shimano HG Spline driver is a standardised part. Cassettes are designed to fit it and that is why 6/7/8 speed chains are about 7mm wide at the pin but 12 speed chains are about 5.1mm at the pin. The Cassettes are all the same thickness, the rings are slimmer and tighter spaced to allow for more speeds in the same space. Campagnolo have started to produce a 13 speed for roadies. That set up uses a 4.9mm chain to further allow the cassette to fit within a standardised hub space. Shimano micro-spline and SRAM XD drivers are now complicating the market but they still hold the same cassette width, they just make the driver diameter smaller to accommodate a 10t ring, HG spline can only fit an 11t at the smallest. If you're upgrading an older bike the real hang up will likely be the Bottom Bracket. Chuck that square taper, Octalink of ISIS spline in the bin, we're now in the world of SRAM DUB, 24mm and 30mm two-piece cranksets. This is the area which can mess up would be 1x newcomers as a 2x or 3x crankset will not give a good chainline and 10, 11 and 12 speed really need a narrow-wide chainring to work properly. My personal recommendation is pricey but worthwhile for ease and quality. Buy a SRAM NX Eagle 11-50t cassette for about $100 then fork out a further $300 or so for the SRAM GX Eagle groupset. You'll get the entire 12 speed drivechain in one easy go plus it uses the DUB Bottom Bracket system. This is great if you have an older BB shell which may not fit some of the newer cranks too well. If you can get an XD driver for your hub, do so and omit the NX cassette, the 10-50t GX cassette gives you a better range however requires the previously mentioned driver.
@@toothlessboss if it's going on a HG spline then it should do. Just make sure the hub body and cassette use the same spline interface. Both SRAM and Shimano recently(ish) made new standard bodies for their 12 speed and top-end kit. Most cassettes are still HG though. The one thing to look out for is a spacer that some freehubs have. It's between the cassette and hubshell on the freehub body and it's just there to ensure limited range cassettes (often 9 speed or less) are indexed for the best chainline. That needs to come off for an 11spd.
My local bike shop said I can probably fit max 10-speed cassette on my 9-speed hub so I went ahead and bought a good condition 2nd hand Shimano XT derailleur & shifter. Should’ve done bit more research before because it seems I could’ve jumped straight to 11-speed. Well, at least I didn’t pay much for the XT 10-speed and 11-speed would’ve been more expensive anyway. Good video!
Just an FYI for anyone reading, the Shimano HG hub, usually known as the "8-10 speed hub" (as you see on the bike in this video) will normally fit any mountain bike cassette 8-12 speed that is made for this standard of hub. Some earlier versions of the hub won't fit 10 speed+, but that's from the late 90s, early 2000s. Now, the catch is that this hub will not work with standard 11 speed road cassettes. They need the specific 11 speed Shimano HG hub with the extra space to fit. Since I'm already on this tangent, there are 11 speed road cassettes that will fit the mountain bike sized HG hub, but they have to list that they are "8-10 speed hub" compatible in the specifications.
I guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow lost my login password. I would love any tricks you can offer me!

Cool upgrade, yeah I'd been wondering if an old 8/9 spd hub could support the newer cassettes. I think they add more gears by making the chain narrower, so that's probably why it's compatible.
Yep. That's exactly how it's done. A 7 speed chain is 7mm wide at the pins, a 12spd chain is about 5.1mm wide at the pin. But, the plates are pretty much the same thickness which is where the confusion and up until recently skepticism about narrower chains came from. For a fair while people were worried a narrower 12spd chain would be weaker. While they aren't as tough they're still solid and despite my best efforts, still haven't snapped one.
@@MarcusNesbitt4 Yes, there are three standards for HG freehubs. 7 speed(discontinued), 8/9/10 speed, and 11 speed road. 11 speed is road required for standard 11 speed road cassettes. 10 speed is used for everything else including 11 speed mountain. Shimano even makes an 11 speed road cassette that will fit on a 10 speed hub (HG800-11). Shimano now makes a deore 11 speed 11-51 cassette that fits on a 10 speed HG freehub.

SRAM's NX Eagle uses a 12-speed cassette that fits directly on regular Shimano style hubs in the same way. I think Shimano just released a competitive 12-speed as well.

Bro Your Videos are so informative! You actually show us how to do the work! Also being that you do it with bare min tools that any average can buy is great! You encouraged me to do my own bike work!
It only fitted because the Shimano 11sp mtb cassette is the same width as a 9/10 sp. However the 11sp Shimano road cassettes are wider and require a wider freebody. As a matter of further information, Shimano 10sp road cassettes are narrower than 8/9 which is the reason for the thin spacer. It's a bit complicated, so check compatibility before you commit to spending cash or contemplate getting to work with a file.
Thx mate. You´ve just answered all my questions. Converting 2x9 to 1x11 Shimano Deore M5100 and I was worried that the cassette wouldn´t fit on a 8/9/10 speed freehub body.
good job, but there is a youtube video about dork discs, too.....which says its good to have, prevents damage, when the chain jumps off the cassette into the spokes

@@barefootbob1269 sounds fair. I'm indeed struggling with some now, but it just feels like i'll be struggling on any gear, just for a little longer, due to lower speed. I've also recently discovered that there are some wider-range 8-speed cassetes on the market though. so i'm thinking of a little extension.
@@SolLignum Yes there are some options in that area. A note of caution is with that comes some weird gear spacing. For example on an 11-46 8 speed sprockets would be 11-13-16-22-28-34-40-46 which means a fairly dramatic change from one gear to the next. That same cassette in an 11 speed would have a better transition between gears my 11-46 runs 11-13-15-18-21-24-28-32-36=40-46 just gives you a tighter ratio. an 10speed cassette has an width of 37.2 mm and 11speed has 37,7 mm which is only 0,5 mm difference.
Yes it works, I have SLX 11speed casette on 8 speed hub.
Hi !!! Whats the update so far
Thanks!
@@julioserna5659, stilll working on the same bike and hub but 1000 km later :)
what can i say about those hubs... cheap, and reliable as F!... not the lightest but pretty good for a low budget proyect
what wheels are thoose?
Check out the 1-13 S-Ride, it'll work on a regular HG hub
270 for complete kit, minus crank/chaining
Man thats awesome...I also have an SPECIALIZED FSR stump jumper fully with an 3*9 drivetrain....would it be possible to do such conversion as you did??
Bro Your Videos are so informative! You actually show us how to do the work! Also being that you do it with bare min tools that any average can buy is great! You encouraged me to do my own bike work!
Really Surprised It Fit!
It's a bit complicated, so check compatibility before you commit to spending cash or contemplate getting to work with a file.
he deserves more subscribers ❤️❤️❤️
Will it work if I put 11 speed cassette to 7 speed hub. Because I want to upgrade my bike
How about the clearance of the 11T sprocket against the frame? I've seen problems there.
My diamondback overdrive has “32h SL-7 Alloy Cassette w/ CNC Disc mount. “ . Where can I find if I can fit a 9 or 10 speed cassette in there?
Great vid! Absolutely what every1's fussing about. I guess the big question now is, will the same hub fit a 12-speed cassette?
with sunrace cassetes yes
Sunrace mz90: hold my chain
Sunrace only. Or new freehub with microspline for shimano. With 10x cassette an adaptershim (1,25 mm i think) under the cassette is needed
Not just Sunrace, Sram NX and SX Eagle cassettes will fit on an 8/9/10 speed freehub.
@@tribalink72 your right
Is it possible to put 12 cassete to max10 freehub?
Bike is marlin 6 2021
Shimano 11 speed cassette mtb specific compatible with any mtb specific cassette
great video, thanks. i have 1 question though. how long is your freehub?
I’m about to order that cassette for my pitch, Is that the stock rim and hub ? Just wanna make sure it’ll work for me as it did you
Man I was looking for this video. I have 8 speed cassette cogs on my fat bike. Maybe it will work the same. Thanks bro
Yay no more dork disk.😂 I think I commented before complaining 😂
Thx mate. You´ve just answered all my questions. Converting 2x9 to 1x11 Shimano Deore M5100 and I was worried that the cassette wouldn´t fit on a 8/9/10 speed freehub body.
Did you end up doing this? Just bought a 11speed to fit on my 9speed Pitch
@@Pap3rPlanesss Yes I did and it worked perfectly.
@bourne71 what teeth cog are you running. Wondering if I need to change my 30 cog 27.5
@@Pap3rPlanesss I use a 48 narrow wide in the front and a 11-42 in the back
@@bourne71 What type of riding do you do? I do uphill, lets see how my 30 11-51t feels. If its too light i may get a 32
Love watching you work on this bike. Just got some WTB wheels on mine
Got a SRAM 12s NX 11-50 on my old 8 speed shimano hub.
Working like a charm
good job, but there is a youtube video about dork discs, too.....which says its good to have, prevents damage, when the chain jumps off the cassette into the spokes
Woah! That's my hub! Awesome, i'll be able to upgrade to 1 by 10\11 in the future with no problem! Currently waiting for a 32t chainring to see if 1 by 8 is any good. Your videos are great! Keep up the good work!
If You have any good climbs you will probably struggle with 1x8 unless your a beast lol
I am a big guy at 270 riding a fat bike and have some steep climbs here in the northeast and combo works great for me. I am running a 32t oval up front.
@@barefootbob1269 yeah, i've been considering the possibility of various shifting shennanigans as well, but hey, those are ditry cheap cassettes and even if this won't work well, i can always switch back to stock and just save for a proper 1 by conversion, so i think i might still try that some day. Will report my results :)
that is so very helpful. i just bought the same slx stuff for my gt, fingers crossed it fits
Me: *cries in threaded hub*
Same bruhhh
It be like dat sometimes
Oof they make those for MTB?

Has anyone ordered the same drive train group set from the link in the description. Is real Shimano from Ali express?
Some are real mostly are fake, you need to look to little details and the price
If it’s from Ali most likely fake. But hey if it works. Why not ?!
Awesome video I'm basically a beginner I'm still in the cool Factor I'd like to change my rear cassette on my 21 speed 7 in the back 3 in the front I'd like to change my rear cassette 2 gold plated like I sell on Amazon I have not found one for a 7 cassette they all start at 8 why is that or am I missing something?
Thank you
Hello Sir Mark maybe you have an old cassette.i just want to upgrade 1 x 11 from 3 x 9
You've given me hope! Is that the SLX M7000? I just ordered that set and hope to install on 8 speed Specialized 2006 Cross Roads Sport. The hub on the bike now is 8 speed FH-RM30 with a Shimano CS-HG30i cassette. I hope I have the same luck. If you have any tips or knowledge let me know. Thanks for the vid
Hello thanks for the tips I don’t have a specialized but how I know is that fits my bike.? I have a Schwinn al comp so basically I want to do all this upgrades but how I know I can put that drive train or just 10 speed
Exactly what I wanted to know. Thanks!
me too
Nice video. Im on my way to fit the 11 cassette to 9/10speed hub.

Ther's 3 hub types. U can fit sram 12 eagle nx/sx on it and 11 shimano on the one u got ther. Not to $$ on alix... for the diferent types just type in arc mt-009 boost fre hub
are you ever going to switch to hydraulic brakes?
A non-series shimano mtb hubs can fit upto 12speed 11-52 cassette even sram sx 12spd.
really it can fit to 11-51?
@@jezreeltolentino9925 I forgot to mention that you need to add goatlink for 51-52t.. and 126L chain
