The charm of the original ultraman series is unmatched in terms of visual effects. I’d say they’re as legendary as the old school Star Wars blaster effects, sure, they’re old and haven’t aged very well, but they’re still full of charm

There is something particularly special about Tokusatsu for me. What I love about the medium is that there is so much charm when using both practical and vfx togehter it feels like a true fantasy of the heroes and monsters come life on screen. Growing up from watching Power Rangers to which I hold a special place in my life and to now loving all of Tokusatsu through Ultraman, Kamen Rider and Super Sentai. It has been the best thing that has ever happened, I would not be here today were if not for Tokusatsu. I hate the name of "power rangers" for the western series, despite enjoying them. It took me so long to figure out that super sentai and power rangers were one in the same due to it, and its just a weird localization in general. Like super is pretty easy, and "sentai" can roughly translate as squadron, but where do you get "Power rangers" from?

This is great for toku fans all over the world. I have no doubt that Shin KR will do great based on the teaser they released, which is looks AMAZING. If Shin Godzilla is more horror/serious tone while Shin Ultraman is more light hearted, I can feel that Shin KR will be more serious/depress tone but still have those cheesiness/campiness of the suit designs. Btw, Shin Godzilla and Ultraman already focused so much on cgi, I think Shin KR will used the most practical effects and less cg. According to an interview with Hideaki Anno included in the Shin Ultraman Design Works, he had also previously written proposals for live-action versions of Mirror Man and Mighty Jack, but for various reasons they never materialized.
According to Anno, Shin Ultraman was commissioned by Tsuburaya Productions to Anno as a trilogy. According to the proposal, the second film would be directed by Anno himself. The Shin Ultraman Design Works also includes the proposal, which reveals some surprising details.
Anno has stated that what he really wanted to do was Sequel Shin Ultraman. However, it requires a huge budget and the success of Shin Ultraman is necessary. Incidentally, at the end of the proposal for Shin Ultraman, the word "Continue" is written. According to Tsuburaya Productions' business plan, the film following Shin Ultraman is scheduled to be released in 2024.

Something that disheartens me a little though is how I’ve seen some Shin Godzilla fans on twitter downplay the success of Shin Ultraman, like saying it’s misinformation that Shin Ultraman may have earned more than Shin Godzilla in the same timespan it’s been out despite selling a significantly higher amount of tickets. I feel like it’s weird to be competitive about it when the Shin series are like brothers, and we should be happy Godzilla, Ultraman and Tokusatsu as a whole is being appreciated more.

No subtitles of course, but we were instantly hooked. I've gotten everything Guyver related I could ever since then. The wife found me a VHS copy of Out Of Control many years ago from L.A. Hero/Dark Image and she managed to track down some of the comics for my birthday one year. I have both animated series, and both live action movies, .... and not just because the first one has Mark Hamil, JJ Walker, and Michael Berryman in it.... I had to see a film with all of them in it. And Guyver 2: Dark Hero not just because David Hayter, who wrote the screenplays for X-Men and X2: X-Men United, plays the main character Sean/The Guyver..... needless to say there was a lot of laughter while watching both films. But yeah, I'd love to see a live action Guyver film on par with Shin Godzilla and what I've see of Shin Ultraman, bigger budget, better effects, etc. but still keeping the original comics, animated movie, and animated series firmly in mind. Maybe a life action Out Of Control.

Wait, it's out? Well if it did well, I hope it leads to them making a new high quality ultraman show. The last time I tuned in, they were using literal ultraman action figures as plot points. Things haven't been the same since Mebius...

I grew up watching the reruns of the original Ultraman series in the early and mid 70's. I also collected the Ultraman dolls and always wondered why succeeding Ultraman series never appeared on U.S. television. My favorite Ultraman dolls that I played with were Ultraman and Ultramans Jack, Taro and Leo. It would, therefore, be wonderful to see an adaption of them in the Shin Ultraman series.

  • @MaskedRiderChris

Definitely Gamera! I love the 90s movies dearly and watch them often. Higuchi-san was spot on when he said the appeal of the old shows was how cheesy they often looked, because the appeal of seeing something that's really there on set and on screen outweighs CGI much of the time with us fans. I hope that "Shin Ultraman" gets even a limited Stateside theatrical run, because I'd watch the heck out of it and buy the Blu-ray if it's as good as these clips make it look. I also really enjoyed "Shin Godzilla" in theaters and on Blu-ray because of the liberties Higuchi and Anno took in presenting their take on a classic character. Now to look forward to "Shin Kamen Rider", because the trailer is LIT. You can tell they're big fans and want to do it justice. (Oh, and sue me, but Masami Nagasawa is a special effect in and of herself, rather like Satomi Ishihara)

For a long time now, Ultraman has been my international favorite level of entertainment that could be reflected in Power Rangers. A long time ago, I learned that Ultraman was considered the ultimate Superman. Ultraman was like if Power Rangers were in Godzilla’s world but never needed zords. Eight years ago, my favorite hero monster, Godzilla, came back into my life on the big screen like I never saw him before. Since then, I waited for two of my other heroes, Gamera and Ultraman, to step into the world of CGI. That never came to be. Of course, all the product displacement has made Ultraman more like the commercial is tic style of the Power Rangers, and they only had their hardcore cinematic debut once. I didn’t like the Resurgence creation of Shin Godzilla; it looked abominable to me whereas Legendary Godzilla is the reincarnation of my first favorite Japanese hero. Lately, I’ve been confounded with multiple Ultraman identities overcrowding my mind when I need to have one. Ever since Ultraman entered the realm of Marvel comics, the original Ultraman has been reinvented for me. Now I to see the reinvention of the original on the screen. Lately, I’m excited for Shin Ultraman. I’m hoping to like that movie way better than Shin Godzilla.
One more thing, I have been a little fascinated by Kamen Rider so I wonder how Shin Kamen Rider could be better than Kamen Rider Shin. Also, I really hope that Gamera gets the same treatment that Godzilla did. The reruns are not enough anymore.

I would love to see Anno tackle a live action Guyver. Maybe as a TV series, set in the Shin universe.
Guyver borrows a lot from Kamen Rider, as well as American comics like Spider-Man (mainly in how the world likes to shit on the protagonist), and I feel Anno's style would work quite well with it.

I loved Shin Ultraman. But the movie focuses on the humans and political intrigue with the kaiju and Ultraman as second fiddle. I loved that take. It was more of a thriller than an Ultraman film. I missed the Low Batt indicator. I did not watch Shin Godzilla. At least I think so. So it was with trepidation that I watched Shin Kamen Rider. That was CRAP. I think I fell asleep. I want my money back.
