Blender has 2 Main Renderers. Cycles for Ultra-Realistic PBR rendering. EEVEE for Realtime-PBR Rendering. Cycles is great for everything if you have the time to wait. EEVEE is great for Product Design and Prototyping, with faster rendering. The more time you spend doing lighting setup in EEVEE, you can get results close to Cycles and sometimes, the EEVEE renders are more appealing.

use blender for animation and rigging and houdini for the fx because it's so powerful

  • @matthewgierula5674
    @matthewgierula5674 4 роки тому +26

I have used all of them except Houdini. 3ds Max is the easiest for modeling hands down. Not that the others are bad but creating complex objects takes half the time in Max. The ability to do complex texturing has been another huge strength over the years along with a huge plug in market that made it super popular in the 90's and early 2000's. It suffered from a mediocre rendering engine straight out of the box for years, now they integrated Arnold into the base package. Maya's strength is in the rigging of characters, extremely realistic texturing with huge online texturing library's, and the efficiency of the underlying software programming. The ability to script things with it and realism made it take off for visual effects and bury SoftImage which was the king in the late ninety's and early 2000's. It gained a huge following for creating games which was 3ds Max's hidden strength for a long time. I agree that if you are going to learn one, that's the one most in demand. Blender is free and super powerful now compared to what it was early on. Its weakness is its clunky interface. It makes learning it more difficult but once you get used to it, its great. Where it really shines is the 2d and compositing right in the program. Just incredible and will really challenge Maya in the next few years because its FREE and open source. Cinema 4d has the most stream line interface but has been weak in the ability to rig characters which they have improved dramatically in the last few versions. It gained popularity from its ability to integrate with Adobe After Effects for TV commercials and does fluid and particle simulations very easily. Its been used in tons of TV commercials for drinks and cereals over the years. You get a lite version built into After Effects now and works beautifully for simple stuff and animated text. Houdini is interesting because its a much more complete package then what it used to be. It does fragmented objects and explosions beautifully but really doesn't have the user base much outside of movie studios. I think in the future, Blender is really going to give Maya a run for its money. 3ds Max may fade away because of a shrinking user base. Its owned by Autodesk which also owns Maya. They bought SoftImage and ended making it in 2015. Lightwave is still out there too but hardly anyone still uses it. I did in the late 90's because it ran on Mac and PC and the company I worked for was a mixed studio. Ultimately there is no wrong answer, its what you can afford and what interface is easiest for you to use.

Blender 2.81 is the best 3D software out there for beginners in almost every category you based your comparisons on. I say this with 100% confidence - I have used 3Ds Max, Maya and I also use C4D when needed. Blender has topped these guys. C4D still have the most advanced procedural workflow for moGraph and Houdini is the best for simulation VFX and such. The rest is old news, misleading and wrong info about Blender. Please if you are a beginner, make a more in-depth research on which software to start with, depending on your needs but in general, my advice is to try out Blender 2.81. Beginner-friendly, it is a suite containing every need mentioned on this video and it is free, Open Source and under heavy industry funding and active development.

I’ve used all except C4D here and I’d say they all have their strengths, but with Blender, and some free or inexpensive addons, you have all the strengths. Modelling is already great but Boxcutter makes it perfect for hard surface too. Animation is great. Rendering is great but you can use external renderers as well - if you need more speed, get ecycles. Procedural modelling is limited but Sverchock is free, Sorcar is free, AnimationNodes is free and between those three you have grasshopper and Houdini rolled into one. Particle nodes is coming soon and the everythingNodes project is underway. Blenders procedural texturing is already great. Import/export is great. Interface is the cleanest and the only one of the lot that looks like it was made within the last 10 years (don’t get me started on Rhino...). Blender is free and so is Houdini Apprentice but you can’t use HA for commercial work so it’s only a learning platform. Let’s also talk about BlenderXR add on for blender VR interface as well as an official one being worked on as well as Grease Pencil for 2D animation as well as INCLUDING THE SKETCH STAGE OF DESIGN INTO THE SAME DESIGN ENVIRONMENT as will produce your final models, renders and (potentially) drawing package. That is huge.
Honestly, if you’re thinking about getting into 3D now, I’d recommend Blender. As a professional there are issues with me trying to join projects with other designers using Revit and 3DS so I use what I need to be a part of the system. I’m just always feeling hampered by the other softwares.

Blender is a toy used by a minority of (very) loud fanatics. (Sorry to say, but it applies to 2.8 as well - however devs made a big step to the right direction.) If you ever want to work in the CG industry as a professional, avoid Blender as your first CG software. If you are only looking for a free hobby tool then sure, join the cult it's gonna be fun.
Maya has good foundations, but recently became a pain because Autodesk made it to a ... well, typical Autodesk product: a bugfest. However Maya is the de facto industry standard for animation so if you ever want to be an animator Maya is the only way (unfortunately).
Max is more or less the same except it has tight connection to windows and because of this not really used in large vfx houses as a core pipeline tool.
C4D: performs well on a minor market of motion graphics, it has anything that a small studio needs but nothing more. If you accept its limits you can get a reliable all around CG tool, just don't expect to use your C4D knowledge on large scale high-end projects.
Houdini: currently the only truly high end CG software that can deliver anything a large studio needs and is not a victim of corporate idiocracy (like... ehm ... Maya). If you learn Houdini you'll definitely find job in the industry. Let's not deny it, the learning curve is steep, but rewarding. Houdini is not sacrificing user control just to hide confusingly complex problems into shiny and easy to use tools, so in Houdini doing simple things is complicated but doing complicated things is simple.
All in all, if you are new in CG then only one thing you need to remember: you don't LEARN CG software, you GET USED TO THEM.
Employers are not interested in what you KNOW, they only care if you have already done the SAME (or very similar) what they need before. If you apply to an architectural visualization job, then you need to show architectural visualization renders in your reel, if you wanna do character animation you need to show character animation and if the project is about jumping bunnies then the more jumping bunny you have in your reel is the better.
So it doesn't really matter what software you choose, just stick to it and practice. Then practice more. The more you do the more you get used to it and after a while (don't expect any result in less than two years) you'll be able to do things and then you can show in your reel that whatever the employers are looking for you've already done it before.

I think Blender & Houdini are the best ones out there, why? Because when they release something (tools /render engine/ lay-out), it makes sense. They are innovative~!
As you said, why is 3Ds Max popular among architects? Because architects are using 3ds Max.
Maya has the same reason, everyone is using Maya, because everyone is using Maya.
In 4 years I've encountered many crashes in Maya, my conclusion:
It's a leaking basket they try to fix with temporary 'duct tape', which creates new bugs.
Houdini is the best simulation program, it's perfect and efficient.
Can't say things about Cinema and 3ds Max.
Blender looks very promising and can't wait to make the switch.

blender7843 have you ever used Houdini? If you had I think you would know why it’s such a powerhouse. For $250 for an indie license is relatively inexpensive and is so incredibly deep. After 20+ years in C4D I decided to try some new and I gave myself a couple of weeks with Blender, Maya and Houdini. At the end of this trial phase I was sold on Houdini. It’s feature set is so deep and the low level access you get to all of the data is so present everywhere that you would literally never need to buy a plugin for anything ever again. On top of that the fluids, particles, pyro and soft body dynamics are unrivaled by any other 3D software. Yes blender does fluids, destruction, particles etc but the quality of its simulations don’t measure to what’s being produced out of Houdini. In cases like that being a great artist will only get you so far if the tools don’t perform and Houdini’s are unmatched for those types of things. Also it’s Proceduralism. I have had creative directors ask me to make changes that were easy to make in Houdini because if it’s non destructive nodal workflow. Changes that would have been impossible to do without tons of rework and wrecked deadlines in Blender, C4D, Maya or Max. I respect how far Blender has come but once you wrap your head around Houdini there really is no other software. Houdini + Redshift FTW.

It seems that everyone is catching up on each other. Some VFX features in new Maya looks awesome. However, problem with Autodesk and their Maya and 3dsmax is their insane pricing policies. I bought Houdini Indie - 269 per year. Maya is 2600 or so. Maya LT is a very poor cousin compared to what Houdini Indie can all do. Houdini combined with Blender and Quixel Megascans is an ultimate combination for me so far - especially for indie makers, which is the level on which I am making comparison - Cinema 4D is monthly subscription of 62usd or 86 with Redshift. Thats 744 per year + 300 PER year for RS on top. If you go for Houdini, thats 269 an years and 500usd one time buy of Redshift License. From learning perspective, Houdini is harder, but its becoming bigger and bigger by every year and if you are a good Houdini artist, studios will tear away your hands. Another thing to say about Maya - studios NEED to develop a lots of their own plugins and software to be able to use Maya in their production Pipeline as it's very incomplete and flawed, will crash, will show bugs in renders, etc. Houdini comes as a finished product straight from the install ... do I need to add more?

It still exists and is still a great package but most people use the other 5. I used LW professionally for a few years after using 3ds Max because my company owned mostly Apple Macintosh computers in the late ninety's. It ran great on them and the renderer was fantastic before Cinema 4d came along and took over for broadcast graphics. Blender was always nice but not on the level as the others. In the past few years, it has caught up quickly because of its open source and its FREE.

Thanks for this report. I started to learn Houdini (but I still can do nothing, I stopped because the free version allows to use 720 p)
I learned Blender and made a few animations. Blender 3.0 and 3.2 . I found it has a lot of bugs and weak control. Some variables (settings) are interfered with each other and can be reduced. It crushes a lot, of errors and unexpected results, we cannot predict or guess why. Just stick or restart from your previous steps or pre-saved version of your work because you will not guess what the problem it is. Blender is difficult to manage with its interface when coming into control and bugs. Not easy to find the problem. I found also that the lighting is not as perfect as real, some light spots are exaggerated, and the motion of meshes such as cloth is not realistic (physically).

    1. Houdini for vfx, cloth, hair, rigging and prob modeling if you mastered it you can do modeling with it that will take you to the high-end level
2.Blender its pretty growing faster today because it support everything sculpting to vfx
3.Maya for animation ,rigging , modeling
    4.Zbrush for sculpting
    5.3ds max for modeling ,vfx
    6.C4d for motion graphics
    Modo,3dcoat,..etc
what i suggest is start from
blender to houdini Fx for all 3d stuff
for texturing u can use blender or substance painter/Mari
    for Rendering REDSHIFT
    why blender and houdini because
blender is open source , it will be the game changer for all 3d artists
Houdini always be the king , why because it provides high-end product quality in every build
weak points of houdini is modeling it takes lots of time to finish it , but if u did in it , you will be the BOSS

Blender is awesome and so is C4D. But as a C4D, Maya, XSI, Lightwave, and 3DSMAX user, Blender will amaze you with the things it does as a free and open source program. Try it out. And there are so many beginner tutorials out there. Start off with (Blender Guru, and Blender Binge.)

@@InspirationTuts , Yes Please. It would be very useful if you help in this regard. My personal request is you make a very simple model in 3ds max and texture it in substance. Then bring it back to 3ds max import the textures and render with lighting. So, in a single video one must get the complete idea of the workflow from start to finish.

The worst thing about Autodesk software is the exorbitant pricing! C4D and Houdini costs are excusable because both offer something unique available as a one time purchase (motion graphics specific for c4d and procedural workflows for houdini). I know Blender is amazing and all (and best at pricing), but let’s get real, if all those programs were open source many people that are huge blender advocates would now be using something else. But that’s beside the point; sometimes there is little choice other than paying and the cost of those software later leads to huge costs of plugins and add-ons. 3D artists who prefer one of the expensive software options have to go through licensing the software, sometimes monthly or yearly, licensing plugins and renderers at huge costs and having to keep up with the programs’ demands in terms of computer specs. It’s even worse for people who want to get into 3d and are not a student. The two options are Blender or having a Tim Cook salary. Ridiculous.

The choice of software should not be limited to the features themselves but the community support , cause Blender is free , lots of people use it , so you can easily find solutions once you meet up bug ,Besides for the one who handle it by script , it also has a better support !

Blender is great for freelacers and small studios, while Houdini is perfect for big studios that work on bigger games or movies. Everything else I kinda find obsolete right now. The only other usable softwares then would be the specific ones like: Zbrush, Substance Painter & Designer, Marvelous designer... In short: Houdini is the best and Blender is slowly reaching it.
