Hey Tom...Newbie grower here...you have quickly become my favorite Mushroom grower on You tube....I learn something new and have a good laugh on every vid you do. Question. Why the slanted shelves? what advantage does it have other than looking super cool?
A few reason, one is dirty water doesn't drip from the top down into the mushroom bodies below. But one of the main reasons is we have a lot of earthquakes, slanted shelves means I don't need as much bracing holding them up if the ground shakes.
This was lovely, thank you for sharing your process. Do you guys have a REKO ring locally? It’s where farmers pre-sell their produce through a private social media group (run by volunteers, usually started by a farmer), and then do a fast drop off at a central location; instead of a whole market day. You don’t end up with anything left at the end of the day (or hour) because you’re only dropping off orders rather than spending time trying to sell. Dear Sir, amazing video. Very informative and interesting. I am not a specialist but would it not be possible for You to double your harvest by adjusting your shelves to horizontal position and cutting a hole on the backside as well?
The moshrooms roots grow inside and if you have 2 sides this just means that they fight over the space and in the end die faster, because the corners wouldnt get reached and the "main part" has been taken from the other side as well (this means less nutrients to grow and in the end.... it doesnt help).
You are a joy to watch. Very informative, I appreciate you sharing your process. Exciting to hear the hard work pays off, however it is obvious mushrooms are something you are passionate about!!!!
Absolutely love the video. I want to start my own mushroom business and I have a question about the mycelium you use to start the culture. Do you cultivate the mycelium by yourself or do you buy it pre-made? If you don't cultivate it yourself, I would love to know if you have tried it and why you concluded in the end that it was not worth it. Kind regards from Switzerland
Hi there from Canada. I had a question for you. What happens if you opened the mycelium bag and spread it out in an even layer on a tray or trough? Would you end up with more fruiting bodies started? How come always just a slit in the bag?
I think he does that to control the amount of product. You can only sell so much before they go bad, and if you spread the whole thing out, you'll have all the shooms at once. Where as, after you cut the bunch off the hole in the bag, it starts all over again from the same bag. Controlling the amount of product. (but thats just my guess)
You are basically simulating a log with the bags, and when you only cut one hole you force the bags to spend all its energy on a single high quality bunch. If you take the whole thing out of the bag you end up with a thousand miniature mushroom. Shiitake are different though, they are taken completely out of the bag.
Thanks man! Great video, and I really enjoyed your accent. I watched your video at 08:30 in Sharpsburg Georgia USA. Where did you get the grow bags, or what are they called?
Actually, you could start growing at home with maybe $50-100 invested into some jars, tubs and substrate. Fancy and expensive gear like flow hoods, PID controllers, large sterilizing barrels and ventilation/humidification systems only come into play if you're doing bulk commercial production, and even then it's more for convenience and saving time rather than a necessity.
the guys is a bit of a legend, teaching us all of this for free and so transparent with everything

For teaching me my new career and business.
Hat off for you.

Thanks!
Best video from start to end, very rarely seen actual market sales, that was very cool
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks Amanda! It's always great to see I have supporters like you :)
Look up mush_trips on Instagram. They've got mushrooms and growing kits. It think it gonna help you through too
I wish I could give this video 10 thumbs up.
This and the others are beyond helpful. Thank you.
No worries mate! Glad you enjoyed it :)

So. I was _almost_ right.
Thanks man! Great video, and I really enjoyed your accent. I watched your video at 08:30 in Sharpsburg Georgia USA. Where did you get the grow bags, or what are they called?
9:08 got a contam on the red oysters on the left
..just kidding, nice content :D
S**t happens... Or should I say contam happens?
Dude live the Brooklyn ale shirt , love from the Bronx!!!
haha I got then when I was in NY city!
you are brilliant! It seems difficult to do this at home without all the control measures. I'm a complete beginner but this was fun to watch
Not really, you can grow mushrooms with really low tech methods. Using equipment like me just means the entire growing operation is more controllable.
Nice meeting you today Tom, awesome video very informative.
Thanks mate!
SHOW ME HOW TO BUILD THE DRUM!!! Please and thank you;)
I have another video of it.
I dont know much about mushrooms (yet) but I did learn why Im always late. I've been using imperial time, life is about to change.
