I have recommendations!!! So as someone who grew up eating Korean food, it's hard on me on trail when I dont have korean flavors available. So I've also been experimenting with recipes and dehydrated foods that would be one pot recipes.
1. Kimchi jjigae
- minute rice
- dehydrated kimchi (I do my own)
- dehydrated green onion (or dried minced onion if you can't dehydrate your own green onions)
- Korean Chili flakes
- salt
- garlic powder
- dehydrated tofu
- dehydrated ground beef
2. Doenjang jjigae
- minute rice
- dehydrated doenjang (you can spread it out thin and dehydrate it)
- dehydrated tofu
- dried minced onion
3. Bibimbap
- minute rice
- dehydrated mixed vegetables (carrots, peas, etc)
- dehydrated bulgogi (I use ground beef with some breadcrumbs, soy sauce, brown sugar, onion powder, and garlic powder)
- Dehydrated kimchi
- gochujang
- sesame seeds
Also, I'm sure you already know, but there are also packets of instant miso soup powder that I find are a perfect fix on the trail in the morning
Here I am, planning meals for my thru-hike of the Northville-Placid trail next week, getting ready to go to my local Asian grocery store, and this video pops up. PERFECT!

Westerners i met also liked bulgogi(불고기) & japchae(잡채) among korean food. Now you're a good cook...
I hope to see korean mountain or trail someday. Many people like hiking in korea. It's good to go around in the fall(sep~Nov). Personally, i recommend jirisan montain or seoraksan mountain. I also recommend jeju Dulle-gil for trail.

I think figuring out what to eat is one of the hardest things while hiking; awesome with some inspiration!

You inspired me some other idea of hiking meals. Upto now my meal were instant soup, oat, Ramen and home made biltong. Any way I am a Korean Kiwi. Go further, enjoy life!

Niice, gotta love this! I went fully plant-based a year ago and at first I was like "is it even feasible on trail?", but it turns out it's so easy! So many vegan pre-made dried meals in stores now, and videos like this with really good trail recipes! Keep inspiring!
During my last hike on the Pinhoti Trail a friend offered to make me some Korean noodles for lunch in exchange for my mashed potatoes. It was a first for me...but I was hooked. Thanks for sharing.

Great video. Actual Korean hiking food essentials, in my experience, are whole cucumbers, ramyun, and (for after the hike) makgeolli.

The youtube recipe makers spend weeks making the recipe, then have most of the ingredients in little bowls to make mixing easy. Great recipes, i'm going to try these for backpacking I think ill try instant rice for the first one to give it more mass.
This is most popular food Koreans eat when they go camping: Get a round griddle (something similar to Tembo Tusk), put a big fat juicy Pork Belly on that griddle and cook them. When done cooking the pork belly, move them to lower heat area of the griddle. Get a big jar of kimchi and dump a lot of kimchi in the middle and cook them using lard (remember pork belly). Put other vegetables if desired since vegetables cooked in lard taste better. Place both pork belly and kimchi on a lettuce (something similar to lettuce cup) and eat them together. When done eating, add cooked rice to make kimchi fried rice with leftover kimchi and pork belly, cooked in lard. Enjoy!

I lived in South Korea for 4 years before coming home to through-hike Te Araroa. Korean food is fantastic! It hadn't occured to me to cook it on-trail... Gochujang will certainly keep you regular in the back-country.

Elina you are taking me back to some great times! My best friend’s mom is Korean and my friend and I were roommates in our 20s. She would mail giant pickle jars full of Kim Chee to our place. Dinner was Kim Chee and rice at least three days a week. We kept it in the fridge and even the ice smelled like Kim Chee. Thanks for the video 🙏
the way you write kimchi makes it sound like you're talking about a person called Chee getting mailed in giant pickle jars to your place 😂😂😂😂

i love this! i love korean food, but i never thought about making it as hiking food. i love the idea to just bring those ingredients and then mix them in different ways. definitely going to try those recipes soon. 감사합니다.

Korean food is not easy to take it on the trail. I just took ramen on the PCT. Thank you for reminding me of the trail

Hi there! I love your channel. I’m hiking part of the PCT in a month and would love to make these! One question - how did you take the gochujang when it has to be refrigerated? P.S. they only had a 40 lb tub at the store so obviously I bought it 🤣

I was ALSO wondering this! Maybe you just have to bring the whole thing (they come in varying sizes in the grocery store) since it can be a base in many recipes. I was also thinking tiny squeeze bottles.
Smaller container I'd say - I have seen it come in smaller containers also! But yes, squeezy bottles would also work!
Could the Gochujang be dehydrated? If you know the amount used in the recipe, could it be dehydrated by serving size? Then could package it with the noodles in a ziploc bag.

Crushed peanuts on top of a couple of these recipes would be a nice addition, IMO.
but not very korean, if you wanna stay with the theme.
@@robopecha yeah, I think Elina pretty much said the ship had sailed when it came to authenticity. Trail meals are very “inspired by” as ingredients can be hard to come by and the body is craving calories. The best thing about Asian food is the spices - very palatable on trail.
@@andymytys i think she meant the exact dishes. the ingredients are very korean. its about getting the typical korean taste. not some random "asian" taste.
@@robopecha I get it. But from a hiker’s standpoint, especially long-distance hiking resupplying as you go, pickings can be awfully slim. You start with a targeted dish/taste profile and then get as close as you can with what’s on hand, and sometimes even if you can get it perfect, the body craves more in the way of calories / protein so you have to add something like a spoonful of olive oil or peanuts to the top. Yes, you get something more “Asian” and less specific to an original country’s kitchen, but you’re on trail fueling for the next long day.
@@andymytys i have no idea why you are telling me this. this is just not what this video is about. you can eat whatever you want, i really couldnt care less. just go ahead and be as ignorant as you like. but dont force a conversation about it on me. this video is not about throwing together hiking meals, it is about celebrating the fact that you can have the awesomeness that is korean food even while hiking!
Interesting, well done video, probably some good tips (haven't tried them yet).... but is this video sort of a filler until you get the longer ones about the te Araroa done?
PS, I agree with those who say you don't always have to use (very expensive) pre-made dehydrated food on the trail. I have actually never used those, as they are expensive and often not vegetarian. I have done fine using things available at most supermarkets in many countries these days.

I was wondering- most of these ingedient don't come in single dish sizes. Is it comon among a group of thru hikers to get one food storage + larger pod, carrried by a differtent person every other day and cook for the whole group at camp, or is that too much effort and you are way more relaxed with "everyone for themselfes" - any experiences?
