If you made a dehydrated meal cookbook I would 100% buy it. I'm vegetarian so I appreciate your creative vegan meals. In said theoretical book it would be great to see a mix of home made meals in a dehydrator as well as meals that are made by combining some prepackaged ingredients such as dried beans, pasta, ramen, etc.
Not sure if they're translated, but Eric Tornblad have several books in Swedish. But I'm sure someone must have made a book or two in english as well......
I love that Miranda in the Wild feels like a blog, and not a company's show with product placements. I didn't even know this was REI's channel until I scrolled down here!
So glad you liked and profiled my date sugar suggestion! I just made dehydrated oatmeal with cinnamon-date puree. Here's the recipe: in a small crockpot: lightly oil the crockpot; mix 4 cups water with 1 cup steel cut oats, 1/4 tsp salt. Cook in crockpot 3-4 hours. Soak 16-20 pitted dates in hot water, just covered. After the dates soften and cool, puree dates and soaking water with 1 tsp+ cinnamon. Mix the puree into the cooked oatmeal. Divide into 4 servings on lined dehydrator trays. Enjoy!
Neat tips, I WILL try the soup. One of my favorite things to dehydrate is corn. Take a one pound bag of cheap frozen sweet corn and dehydrate it until it releases from the screen or parchment. It will be all shriveled up for sure. Then using a dry pan like a wok you roast it it until it swells back up and you smell roasted corn. That will pull out the natural sugars from the corn. Lay it out on a backing sheet to cool and keep it in a air tight bag. Instant energy for a snack and you can add in a few green peas using the same process and if you like sprinkle in some curry powder or other spices to taste. This is Parched Corn that was used for centuries as trail food. You can even grind it up and mix it with instant milk and butter powder to make grits, I have mixed it with melted brown sugar to make a morning mush that is packed with energy to get you going. Try it.
Don't knock your cooking show skills. It's your cooking show, gosh darn, not Babish's. Besides he never added water to a pot with a Nalgene. That's next level there. :)
Yes, please! More dehydrated backpacking meals please. Would also like to chime in with others about longer term storage information vs preparing for just one trip, or just a shorter trip. Thank you!
Yes! Thank you so much! This gives me so many ideas for how I can make some delish foods for myself. I have a very, very strict diet due to some crazy food intolerances and this gives me so much hope for being able to eat sustainably while backpacking. Thank you :)
Yes please! More videos. I just saw this and I’m actually prepping my garden and this would be lovely to have some ideas of what and how to dehydrate the leftovers. Thanks so much! A huge fan and very new to all of this.
Great stuff! Thank you! I've found maybe 3 vegan backpacking meals so being able to make my own would be awesome! More breakfast things please! Maybe a vegan biscuits and gravy? I make my own at home but don't know if they could be dehydrated for the trail. Thanks!
Yes, more dehydrating meal demos please. I've been dehydrating for about 30 years for camping, backpacking and canoe trips. Always looking for new ideas. One of my favorite dehydrated meals is Corned Beef and Cabbage. Dehydrated cake is wonderful. Joke: if you put instant coffee in a microwave oven, will you go back in time?
I just started dehydrating food for bike packing trips...made cream of broccoli soup with a creamy cashew base...blended till smooth then dehydrated it...super good and easy to rehydrate . Thanks Miranda...for the laughs and great ideas!
👏yes! *lovely* ! *amazing* ! but can you please *tell/show* me how the dehydrated foods/silicone bags fit into a *bear canister* ??! 😮in *fact* can you make a video packing *REI bear canisters* of different sizes with food for 3-6 days or something! *please* and *thx* ! - jamie.
Love this! I recently bought a dehydrator and I'm so excited to try these recipes next time I head out backpacking :) Could you do a spring/summer video too?
Please more meals, love the videos. Quick question...if I were to vacuum seal a meal with an oxygen absorber how long would they last? I would like to have meals prepared in my home for emergencies or when I am lazy...thanks.
Love all of these recipes! Thank you for the vegan meals! More please! And favorite kindergarten joke- What's brown and sticky?............. a stick!!!! :)
.. Great thing about a dehydrator ,, when planning an outing , about 2 weeks before just dehydrate any meal leftovers from daily meals ,, especially if your single ,, don't have to make special batches ... Dehydrate then vacuum seal ,, put in fridge until needed .. .. using a dehydrator is kinda fun ,, jerky ,, fruit roll ups for the kids ,, dried fruit slices .. just about anything edible .. ..And agree ☆☆ ..add seasonings when re-hydrating ...
Leftovers? My kids never leave any. 😂 And when I dehydrate fruit to have as snack on the trail......they eat it as candy in the tv-couch! Can't really complain though, they prefer fruit before candy. 🤔😉
@@elinordahlstrand9342 ...lol...I guess on occasion you'll have to make a double helping of what you might like on trail or camp...maybe not have it in sight until they've gone to bed ... but it is good to know there are children out there not going to bed hungry ..👍🙃🙏
Just moved to southwest and I found your vids... perfect tone and pace for my style of adventure... I took your advice from previous vids and really look forward to making meals with this little diddy right here. Thanks!
More dehydrated meals please!! And can you include portion size suggestions for a family of four? We’d like to take our young children camping and having an idea about how much dehydrated food to make would be helpful. Thank you!
Whoever edits these videos deserves a raise, cause when you said "we're running out of space" and the little astronaut came up I lost it LMAO! legit laughter for 2 minutes straight.
im literally watching this video right now because i was just looking at anacondas camp meal range and its sooo expensive :( im not ready to pay that much for food that isnt even that good haha
I never realized how immensely practical a dehydrator really is. Like allowing me to have pre cut vegetables ready when i want to make a meal, and being able to use just as much as i need, instead of being stuck with half an onion or broccoli or whatever, that i need to use quickly before it expires. Now i can boil a whole bag of potatoes in one go, as well as slicing them up in one go, so i dont have to do that work every time i want to make a meal. And when i want to prepare the meal, i just add all the dehydrated ingredients to my food thermos, make a quick gravy, add extra water for the rehydration, bring it to a boil, pour the gravy into my food thermos, shake it all up, and wait for it to rehydrate. BTW... For the gravy, i usually just melt some butter in a pot, stir in some flour, let it roast for half a minute (or a little longer if i want a darker color gravy), and then gradually add some water while stirring, until i get a good consistency. I then add a little salt and pepper and maybe some paprika powder - and/or whatever spices i want.
Great video! Regardless of whether you are vegetarian, vegan, or eat meat, vegetable based diy dehydrated meals do tend to yield the best results from what I have found. Meat can be very difficult to dry because of the fat and can take a very long time to rehydrate. However, what I have done in the past for adding meat to home dehydrated meals is to just buy a can of freeze dried chicken, such as from Mountain House, which was pretty cost-effective.
Thanks for this video!! Prepping our meal plan for our backing this summer and got a dehydrator. Also vegan so love these recipe ideas! Thank you!! QUESTION: How long will these keep in your reusable baggies? Just wondering how early I can start prepping food for a trip.
Lmao… I commented on another video about this exact concept.. I guess I need to do my homework before commenting next time! Thanks for posting this, I would love to see more as you progress through the years! 🙌🏻
Oooo the soup blows my mind! Can't wait to try that! I just got a dehydrator off a buy sell site and have some blue berries I can't wait to try to dry.
This was great! Especially the tip about not precooking dehydrated foods with fat. Yes more of these dehydration recipes please! You ever mix it up with freeze dried foods?
I do want to see more dehydrating videos, but you wanted a joke.. What’s the best thing about Switzerland? Idk, but the flag is a big plus! I love your vids!
I just love your humour but I was a little taken aback by that shirt as camouflage. lol You are so down to earth and relatable that I am almost brave enough to attempt your lunch and dinner recipes in my new dehydrator-raptor-thingy-me-bob!
more videos like this =) Really like to get some more inspiration and not buy already cooked meals and not sure what it contains… more like this! Awesome job!! =)
There are 2 basic ways to make dehydrated meals. Cook the meal first, spread it out and dehydrate. I'm not to crazy about this cause you usually need some oil/fat to cook the meal. Alternative is to dehydrated all the ingredients separately, assemble in the bag with spices. When rehydrating, just cook in a camp pot for 5 to 10 min to bring everything together. I have a dozen small mason jars full of dehydrated veggies, etc. just waiting to be assembled into meals.

SAME!
Usually you can add those ingredients into recipes as long as they are in the correct portions
Vegetarian here too! I would definitely buy a book! 😍
Vegan lacks essential animal nutrients. A dangerous diet.
Yes yes YES!!!!! More dehydrated meals! Yes yes yes! I’m staying tuned.... yes more dehydrated meal recipients! Yes yes YES!
Ditto!
Echoing this sentiment. Love recipe ideas for dehydrating!
I love that Miranda in the Wild feels like a blog, and not a company's show with product placements. I didn't even know this was REI's channel until I scrolled down here!
The fans have requested she get her own channel for years now!

sounds like you could make a dehydrated cookbook too!
Love this! What a great way to substitute processed sugar. Thanks for sharing!
More dehydrated foods, please! Yum. Also, preparing your own meals, instead of buying prepackaged, is very environmentally friendly.

Miranda says “Don’t dehydrate strong smells with other foods” also says.... “curry next to pears” 😂
Also raw onions.
I’ve been waiting so long for this episode. I’ve got my coffee and I’m ready to watch! Miranda and team deserve raises, just throwing that out there.
