Glad to see someone else praise Persona 2 soundtracks. They really go super hard. I swear that game has an unique theme for every single locale; even all the random shops you can visit during the game. When compared to other PS1 JRPGs of the time, only FF games rival in the sheer amount of tracks put into a single game's soundtrack.
Persona 1's PS1 soundtrack is also kickass but you can barely hear the dungeon themes in that game. Some of them are almost ten minutes long but the random encounter rate is so high that you're lucky if you get to the 30 second mark, and the songs obviously start from the beginning post-battle.
I agree, I love the little things P3 has that makes it realistic, pm getting tierd or beeing busy and sl getting riversed are cool in concept.
Its a shame that they decided to get rid of them instead of making them better or optional on P3R
Strange journey is definitely my favorite but fuck idk how I i’ll gain the strength to replay it again
I've been following you on Instagram from a while now. Probably 3 or 4 years. It's bizarre to see how your opinion on Futaba has changed. But hey, I get it. Really feels like Atlus always makes horrible decisons with leaning too much into character traits. Only issue I have with your list is SMT V. I'm a gameplay kind of guy, so I'd have it a lot higher. Great video regardless.
Great video overall (wait I have to be toxic, ummmm I disagree with things which makes you bad and wrong or something). I'm in a similar boat where the first megaten game I completed was P5, which made branch out and try a majority of the megaten games, and now I view P5 rather negatively nowadays. I'm curious to see what megaten games you're gonna try next?
Also my personal top 5 are:
5) DDS2
4) Majin Tensei 2
3) Strange Journey
2) P2:EP
1) SMTIV
im mostly gonna focus on whatever atlus releases in the future, but if smt nine and/or devil summoner get fan translations ill give those a shot
@@livingdoubt54 smt nine is THE japan only smt game that I REALLY wanna try. It looks so jank yet fun
Just recently getting into MegaTen myself and I think I agree with most of what you say at least regarding the ones I've played. For further improvements tho, I think most people would appreciate it if you'd have inserted images, video clips or sound sample in this video to drive home the point you were trying to make and also to give us a better picture. And yes, I know it's a lot more work. But for now, here's a sub. Cheers!
yeah i actually thought the same thing a few months after uploading this but it was my first video so i was still new to the process. my persona 3 reload video is much more visually interesting
Man the social links in any P3 game were way too awful to be considered S or A tier
great video, I'm really proud. can't wait to actually watch it all when i have the time
A simple yet entertaining video keep up the good work
Opinion: Story wise, I think I liked the OG P3 to either FES or P3P. The reason is [spoilers ahead] you could prevent the deaths of key characters in the later two, and that takes away from the theme of P3. Death and acceptance. Those characters dying is meant to be the tragic trigger to help build who other characters become as well as carry on the theme of death throughout the game. But now those triggers happen even if they don't die, so I guess death isn't that important to a story about how death effects people anymore. GG.
Catherine, Soul Hackers & especially Eternal Punishment in S Tier where they belong❤
DDS 1/2 were my introductions in to smt and boy oh boy were they brutal in terms of difficulty as a kid. P3 is my first and favorite persona game to this day. P4 felt so underwhelming in terms of atmosphere and story in comparison to P3 where there was clearly a darker tone to everything.
P5R literally changed my life bruh the summer I played it I lost 30 pounds, got in shape, still working on that rizz, and just felt less miserable and free after expieriencing it. I wanted to feel like i could be happy by beating the things that i feel are cureently holding me back. Sorry if it was cringe but it's true it was that liberating and eye opening. Now I'm just missing a harem
You almost pulled it together with the penultimate sentence but that last one… Jesus wept
34:18 that friend of yours sounds like a pretty cool guy honestly
Yes! SMT IV is my favorite too, say what’s your favorite ending?
if i had to choose just one of them, chaos. but the true smt 4 experience in my eyes is to do the law/chaos paths first and then the white ending, as everything comes full circle that way. (but mostly bc the neutral ending sucks in both a gameplay and narrative perspective)
My main issue with P3P was the lack of cutscenes, with the examples you gave being the main reason I disliked it. I was hardly immersed during the cutscene after the October 4th incident, but when Akihiko yelled in pain I couldn't help but laugh. I had to watch the P3FES cutscenes to feel any of their raw emotion, which sucks.
DDS, Strange Journey and SMT IV in A and S tier - great taste
Agree.
I know you have a video on vengeance, but it’s great with the changes.
Great list! The only thing I didn't agree with was devil survivor. That's an easy S tier for me.
Ouch, poor SMT If, Akira's route is genuinely one of the most fun dungeon crawls in the series that honestly redeems the game, its just not going to be appreciated by many people who dont bother doing NG+ after suffering in the domain of sloth and the sheer mediocrity of the other routes.
15:58 THIS GOT ME💀
23:36 SO DID THIS
I'm gonna play all of them. Just give me like 20 years
I'm playing SMT4 now because of this video, the game is pretty good until now, hope you're right and i enjoy it to the end
Did you enjoy it?
Holy based i want to kiss you despite hating p3 soundtrack which is peak also based DDS enjoyer
Nice video to watch while I grind metal slimes, ty
You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion on Persona 5’s story. However, I do believe it’s worth mentioning that P5 at its core is a commentary on modern Japanese society. Where maintaining the status quo, conformity, and respecting your seniors and people of authority are so ingrained into the culture, and P5 tries to cover the flaws that come with this mindset. Now obviously the execution has varying degrees of success, but I feel like the themes and what the game is trying to say go over a lot of people’s heads, especially Westerners.
Mostly agree with this list, except I would have the Devil Survivors and Persona 3 and 4 switch places. DS1 and P4 IMO just had better character synergy, interactions, and growth. For SMT4:A in particular, there's a writeup on how it deviates and deconstructs the world building from SMT4 on ResetEra by wondermagenta. Name of his post is, "Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse - did anyone else find it really disappointing?" Very long but also a great read.
You can marry akihino in pq... instant s tier! But jokes aside this list was pretty good. + for putting dds1 in S
Good list although i would change some games higher and some wayyyyyyy lower (ahem ahem dancing games ahem ahem). Otherwise gucci list
@@auztarmalow15 a lotta these opinions are outdated id def put em lower if i ever revisit this
@livingdoubt54 that's all gucci man, although don't let me sway your opinions if you truly do like the dancing games. I'm just some Joe schmoe on the internet giving his opinion, but if you like em bro i respect it!
Now with SMT5: Vengeance, I'd throw that straight up into S, but fantastic list. Also Innocent Sin is still at least an A -tier despite the difficulty, I just love the characters too much.
Finally i thought i was the only one that didn’t like the P3 soundtrack lol
Ba-Ba-BabyBabyBabyBabyBabyAAAAAAAHHHHH
so what do you think of vengeance :0
@@goobertgum im making a video on it right now 🤫
wooo
You have great taste dude.
i cant remember anything about her but i appreciate the top tier toki hating
I'm 30 hours into persona 5 and im loving it, should i switch to royal?
@@matthy7404 yes
Great video
It’s crazy to me that Persona 5 was your first game/what made you branch out and try other SMT games. Persona 3 was my first back in 2007, and since then I have mostly stuck with the Persona franchise exclusively. I’ve only played 3-5, the dancing games, strikers, SMTV, and some of SMT3, but have been extremely curious about the other games in the SMT series. The only thing that has put me off from trying the older games in the series is my preconceived notion that they’re very grindy, but the praise you give to SMT IV, Digital Devil Sagas, and the Persona 2 Duology make me want to try them out(well aware of the story from the P2 games). I just dont know where to start. Anyways great informational video! It was interesting hearing you go into detail about your love/disdain for these titles. Also laughed a ton thanks to your line delivery lmao. I look forward to your next vid!
much appreciated. idk who be saying the smt series is grindy but i find them to be not very grindy at all. the only one with a grinding problem is smt5. id say a good place to start is smt4 as it is a culmination of everything that makes the games new and old good. if you enjoy it then i recommend finishing smt3 or smt4 apocalypse then start branching off with whatever interests you from there
I will definitely be playing smt IV because you made it sound amazing and the soundtrack is pretty awesome
Persona 5 strikers was my first one. Then I played persoan 5 royal, persona 3 portable, persona 4 golden and persona 5 tactica. then I will play persona 3 reload! I also played soul hackers 2 for a little bit!
My fav ones are p5t, p5r and p5s!
Soul hackers 2 is definitely my least fav one, but I dont hate it or anything
Ai generated for a game that came out in the 2000s is wild lool
You sound older than I imagined
Meh, I guess I'm not the only one but for me, SMT IV fell kind of flat. I didn't think the plotbeats were that surprising (or like you said kind of recycling the story of SMT 1), I hated the obtuseness of the alignment system, and not only did I despise most of the new artwork, Lucifer may as well be an entirely different demon because he lacked every bit of charisma his other game incarnations had.
I think on the whole, I actually enjoyed SMT IV apocalypse more, even though I agree with all of your criticism.
Most of the main characters were deplorable (except for Navarre and Gaston), the game banked far too hard on how much I would care about them, and the ending paths left a bad taste in my mouth because I had to pick between brainwashing for goodness or for the total edgelord route.
That said I really enjoyed the main story focusing on Krishna and enjoyed his characterisation plus nearly all of the other villains. I also liked the retcon that the reason why Lucifer didn't behave like Lucifer is because it was actually Satan. The final boss was also *chef's kiss* with Satan joining you against good old YHVH
twin this a good video drop more
There is a segment that is exactly a copy of nyarly bro come on lol. the whole Digital Devil Saga segment was word for word.
so i went back and watched the dds segment of this video as well as nyarlys two other tier list videos bc of this stupid ass comment and literally the only thing remotely similar is we both bring up how dds2's way of story telling is inconvenient from a gameplay perspective. i guess two people cant share an opinion
@@livingdoubt54 Word for word bro? come on i even was like "didn't i just watch that video?"
But it's just a segment i didn't say that your whole video is ass or both of your opinions is not valid.
I don't think it's a bad opinion i just say that it's weird that your opinion is stated almost the same exact way he did, like in the same order almost with the same words, delivered the same exact way. Like come on lol
But don't worry you don't have to be sensitive about it your video is just fine.
Can't agree with most, but great list nonetheless
hi lokidyne
i love the phrase nothing burger
this was a really great first video and im really looking forward to more of your content! 🫶
i agree persona 3 soundtrack is the weakest and lowkey mid i hate the battle theme.
portable soundtrack better 🐐
Finally, someone with backbone
Interesting
Interesting
I enjoy it a lot more than I used to but finally someone that doesn't ride Persona 3 like it's leagues above the others just because they want to seem cool because it's the first modern Persona game.
i think katsuya is really fucking boring but cool vid anyway
