Goodness this brings back so many memories, mainly of sweaty nights a friend and I dancing our butts off to the 12" and basically clearing the dancefloor whilst we, in a trance-like state, kept up with the frantic beat for what seemed like hours!! Amazing song.
As a member of the school music programs in Junior High and High School in the mid/late '80s here in the PNW of the USA, which included everything from Concert/Symphonic to Marching and Pep bands (I was low reed player, focusing on alto and bass clarinet, as well as tenor sax), when I first came upon this years ago (but long after my school days were over) I have since wondered why we never had the opportunity to add this to our Pep repertoire back then. You can only play "Venus", "Hot Suff", "Proud Mary", "On Broadway", etc. so many times before it all becomes quite stale. What we really needed to step it up a few notches was some fantastic Pigbag!
Class pure class And do you remember the dance that went with this, brilliant xxxx Well done lads Thank you for being my go to song, the 12” version is marvellous, the horns, the pipes, the bass, the drums, the maracas, even the whistle, when we heard the whistle we danced faster and faster. xxxx ❤️
This tune took SO long to take off. I remember buying the 7" but it didn't chart. I'm not sure what happened, I don't know if it was a reissue that charted or what, but once it took off, wow... I was so excited to see them on TOTP!
Ty , trying to get a 'feel' , for when 'Regan/Thatcher' era finally got going. I was still at school (thankfully, the last dregs of it. One more year, and I was free of it's hell.). This (to my mind , was a marker , showing it hadn't quite got going.). Oh, so many evenings listening to 194 Capital Radio, studying , and having this track played generously.
The band swapped around instruments for the miming on Top of the Pops. The guy with standing with the bass is trumpeter Chris; the guy in the hat with the trumpet and whistle is Simon, who was actually the bass player. Wearing a jacket playing percussion is Paul "Nellee" Hooper who went on to produce Bjork, Massive Attack and Soul II Soul. He wasn't a permanent member of Pigbag, don't think he every recorded with them, but he did tour with them with his band Mouth.
My friends liked this when it came out, but at first I hated it. That all changed after eventually a mate said I should try dancing to it. I went from hating it to loving it in about a minute.
Did Peter Powell say Mamas got a brand new Pigbag?! I was too young to dig this when it came out, but now, hoooo boy, such a wonky off beat groovy melee of avant garde jazz, ska and afrobeat, made for funking like a loon to. They named their band after the singers bag which had a boar or warthog on it lol. I think they got escorted out by security here later after calling Saville and the producer or something w****** lol after they got told off for not miming properly.
Tune! FREE GIG THIS FRIDAY 25/01/13 at The Half Moon Putney SW15: Pigbag with today's new avant-garde art punkers Perhaps Contraption. DJs Chris Sullivan (Blue Rondo à la Turk / The Wag Club) and Mark Jones (Wall of Sound) complete the night. 8pm until 1am

Ace tune and an Ace time to be a teen 78 to 84 was a diverse period of time for musical styles and papa got a new pigbag I LOVED it!!
Second that! Never see their likes again!!! 👏👏👏
Totally agree 💯
Never fully appreciated before how immense this is, free jazz squawking Top of the Pops!

Saw it live on TV on that day. Was the #1 single that week.
Me too! Three days after my 17th birthday.

More of a collective than a band. Love that bass line.
Saw them at the Hammersmith Palais that same year. Wild set! Amazing gig!
...and I’m back speed-skating at the Roller Disco 👌🏽☺️

They refused to perform it on TV for a long time.
They loved the secrecy and why not xx

Mark Dailey - ‘The New Music...10:30 Saturday on CityTV!’ 😎🇨🇦
I literally took up the trumpet to learn how to play this song!
Glad to know you meant it literally, as metaphorically "taking up the trumpet" is a whole different proposition 😉
How many hours till you achieved your goal?
Ian McCulloch on sax. Good lad, Ian...he often lent his talent to other acts.
Seriously!? Was that Ian McCulloch?
😂😂😂😂😂

As someone who loves everything UK Electronic, finding this out was a genuine “oh shit” moment. Thanks for that tidbit!

The Christmas show was funny, Pigbag had been drinking all day. They messed all the miming up and were banned from TOTP!
Class.

Great classic song!
Why did Peter Powell say "Mama's" got a brand new pig bag?! LOL
Peter Powel, the posh boy of Radio1 😂. I was thinking exactly the same.
Some epic bad miming going on there
Actually the band stated that they did it all on purpose , coz they were fed up of the TOTP staff bossing them around.
It was deliberate, as they felt the "miming only" policy on TOTP was ridiculous. The Beeb were not happy. Pig Bag weren't asked back for some time.
Hope inn disco Sedgefield, remember it well,up the boro
