Very well done! An exaustive and quite coherent list! My only points: personally I would place Genesis (only Gabriel era) a bit higher and Rush some place down , moreover I would "switched" Procol Harum for Marillion and Focus for Los Jaivas🙂
Thanks for the compliment! Your suggestion to adjust the position of Genesis and Rush makes sense, as well as the proposed swaps. With so many great bands, there's always room for different interpretations! 😊
Jethro Tull is an incredible band and definitely deserves recognition. They're already well-placed on the list, but there's always room to give them even more credit. Thanks for commenting!
Did you know that the eagles hotel California was a rip-off of a Jethro Tull song. Called used to know. Different lyrics but same music. I love tull by the way
Genesis at 6? Below Rush?! There is no way that anyone can justifiably say that Rush we’re more influential than Genesis. Or Yes, for that matter. Come on…..
I understand the frustration. Genesis had a huge influence on progressive rock, and many consider their contribution very significant. Rush also had a massive impact, but the ranking of influence can vary depending on the criteria used. Thanks for the feedback!
I see your point! Just a reminder, this list focuses on the most influential bands, not necessarily the best. Influence includes shaping the sound of other bands and inspiring people to explore progressive rock. Which band do you think had the most impact on the genre? Thanks for commenting!
@@borsop1 I understand what you're saying my friend. I actually think that Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson themselves would say that Yes was more influential. The problem is that Rush is my favorite band and, one could argue, that Rush is a much harder rocking band that is very close to metal. I like Yes and Genesis a lot, but Rush rocks harder and has more interesting lyrics. In short, I'm just a Rush fanboy.🤪
You're welcome! 😊 The holy trinity of Italian Progressive Rock. Le Orme, BMS and PFM have made significant contributions to the prog scene. What are your favorite albums by these bands?
It's all about perspective! Rush's influence is undeniable, but I get why some might place them lower. Everyone has their own take on the rankings. thanks for commenting!
Marillion came when Progressive Rock was a thing from the past. It was the second wave. I remember at the time veryone said “Marillion ? they sound like Genesis. It was like nostalgia 😂”.
Yeah, Marillion definitely brought that prog revival in the 80s, right? Everyone kept saying they were "Genesis 2.0," giving off that nostalgic vibe 😂. But they added their own flavor and made a mark in the second wave of prog!
I agree, Uriah Heep has a huge influence on music, blending progressive rock with hard rock and metal elements. They really paved the way for many bands that came after! Do you have a favorite song from them?
I understand your point! The order of bands can spark debates, and many people have different opinions on who should be at the top. The list reflects a perspective, but it's great to hear different opinions on these prog giants. Thanks for commenting!
Good point! Gryphon, Triumvirat, and Focus are indeed important bands in progressive rock. They have a unique approach that deserves recognition. Thanks for the comment!
@@joeltome5519 i agree: In muy modest opinion, Novalis, Eloy, Focus, hungarian Omega and, maybe, Kansas, and Aphrodite's Child (666...). 3:34 Greetings from Venezuela
ELP # 1 Yes #2 Genesis #3 King Crimson #4 Frank Zappa #5 Gentle Giant #6 Jethro Tull #7 Kansas #8 Rush #9 Strawbs #10 PFM #11 Nektar #12 Triumvirat #13 The Nice #14 Pink Floyd # 15 Goblin # 16 Eloy # 17 Jeff Beck #18 Van der Graaf Generator #19 Moody Blues #20 ELP were the most intense with Yes a close 2nd, I saw them both in the 70s, Frank Zappa was also up there in the top spot, Genesis were great but who do you think influenced them ? KEITH EMERSON that's who ! Yes also were influenced by Keith Emerson and the Nice..... You need to of seen them in the 70s to make a list like this, Cheers !
Your list is impressive and full of great prog rock names! ELP and Yes truly made their mark with their intensity, and seeing those giants live in the '70s must have been an incredible experience. Keith Emerson was definitely a major influence on many bands, including Genesis and Yes. It's always fascinating to see how these influences intertwine in the genre. Thanks for your comment!
Die ersten drei Alben (Supertramp, Indelibly Stamped, Crime Of The Century) sind Prog in Reinkultur.
I see your point. Rankings can vary a lot depending on individual perspectives. Rush has a large fan base, but might not be everyone's top choice. What would your ideal order for prog rock bands be? Thanks for the comment!
Well, the title was "..most INFLUENTAL..." (not "biggest fanbase"). With that, there is essentially two criteria tha should go into the ranking: - Bands/artists that were essential for the forming of the genre in the late 1960s, and - Bands that later contributed to a MAJOR change or evolution of the genre. Much as I have big respect for Rush, they do not qualify high wrt any of those. In no particular order, 6 out of the top 10 must include: King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis. All of them definitively rank higher than Rush. Debatable absentees: Frank Zappa, Focus. Appreciated absentees: Kansas. Sorry, all 'Merkans. You created blues, country and good old rock'n'roll, and the evoled that into a multitude of lovely genres. Everything rock/pop stands on the shoulders of that! But prog rock is essentially a Europeean thing..
I saw ELP at the August Jam 1974. We were very high and I saw them promoting Brain Salad Surgery. He did elevate the keyboard and turn in around. They concluded with the wings sprouting out. For years no one believed me..
Wow, seeing ELP at the August Jam in 1974 must have been an incredible experience! The "Brain Salad Surgery" show with the elevated keyboard and wings is truly iconic. It’s always interesting to hear these memorable concert stories. Thanks for sharing!
Nektar is an iconic progressive rock band. They definitely deserve to be remembered! Roye Albrighton was remembered on one of our lists, check it out if you can: ua-cam.com/video/aHKSCqiGUoo/v-deo.html Thanks for commenting!
Great list! I think the order might shift a bit, especially considering Genesis’ influence during the Peter Gabriel era and the impact of King Crimson and Yes. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band is a pretty interesting choice too, not so common in prog lists. Thanks for commenting!
Great choice! Jethro Tull and King Crimson are true icons of progressive rock, each bringing their unique approach to the genre. Frank Zappa, on the other hand, is a legend who blended rock with jazz, classical music, and a lot of humor. Thanks for commenting!
I know all the bands on your list (except the first one) and I saw many of them live even more than once. Thanks for including Italian bands too. Greetings from Rome
How cool that you know so many bands from the list! Los Jaivas is an amazing Chilean band that mixes rock with traditional Andean music, definitely worth checking out. And Italian bands have a special place in prog. Thanks for commenting!
Makes sense! Rush has always mentioned Yes as a huge inspiration, and that just shows how much prog bands influence each other. The list might have some rankings that spark debate, but the important thing is that these 20 bands are amazing and have made history in the genre. Thanks for commenting!
I liked your list, especially the focus on Italian and Swedish bands! It's diverse and brings less obvious names, which is always interesting. Nice to see King Crimson at the top too. Thanks for commenting!
Focus belong in the top 10! not sure Rush are a proper prog rock band. they sure have some elements of it in their music but to me they are a straight ahead rock band. also Moody Blues as much as i love them (one of my all time favourite bands) are psychedelic rock that is definately a different sub genre. otherwise most important ones have been covered
I get that you think Focus deserves to be in the top 10, but lists are always a matter of personal taste. As for Rush, even if you see them as more of a straight-ahead rock band, a lot of people consider their work, especially with Neil Peart, to have significant progressive elements. And while the Moody Blues are known for a more psychedelic sound, they also have some prog elements in their music. Progressive rock is a pretty flexible genre, and opinions can vary. Thanks for commenting!
Jethro Tull is an amazing band, especially for their unique blend of progressive rock with folk influences. What's your favorite album of theirs? Thanks for the comment!
King Crimson is widely recognized as one of the most innovative and progressive bands in the genre. Their experimental approach and pioneering albums have defined progressive rock. What’s your favorite album by the band?
@@zsoltsztrunga3718 correct and moreover, as opposite to all the other bands, King Crimson have been active since foundation to almost today through a 55 years career with lots of changes to the line up but unparalleled creativity, innovation, change of direction and top craftmanship.
Very nice video, however, I believe we can't place artists on a scale. It's not athletics you know, where the factual measure of time and speed sets the places on a podium. But yeah, I really appreciated this presentation of progressive rock as a genre, as an artistic movement, because it really is. Thanks man 👌🏽✨
Thanks a lot for the comment! I agree, you can't measure art like a competition. But it's always interesting to see how everyone interprets and feels music differently. Thanks for commenting!
UK? Happy The Man? Can? Electric Light's Orchestra? Kansas? Porcupine Tree? Dream Theater? The Mars Volta? Anglagard? Echolyn? Spock's Beard? The Flower Kings? Ozric Tentacles? The Pineapple Thief? Riverside? Lazuli?
Great bands, they all have a unique contribution to progressive rock and its aspects. Each brought something special to the genre, whether through technical complexity, stylistic fusions or sonic innovations. Do you have any favorites like these that you think couldn't be left out of this list of 20 bands? Thanks for commenting!
@@IvanIvanov-pc5cr Magma has its own genre and is influential on artists worldwide, not just in France. I.e. Koenjihyakkei (Japan), Universal Totem Orchestra (Italy). Just two names, but there are more
Yes & Tull did it for me growing up. Genesis & Crimson behind them. Never got into Rush or Floyd (except Animals). Great list, highlighted some bands not too familiar with, but sound great in the snippets.
Thanks for the comment! Yes and Jethro Tull are real prog powerhouses, right? Genesis and King Crimson too, no doubt. About Rush and Floyd, it's that thing... personal taste always counts! But glad you enjoyed finding new bands from the video! 🎸
I’m totally late to prog rock, but I’m enjoying what I’ve been listening to lately. I’m more of a metal / hard rock guy, but I really like this style, too.
You're on the right track, dude! Prog rock has a lot of bands that blend well with metal and hard rock, like Rush, King Crimson, and even Dream Theater, which you might really dig. The journey's just starting!

VDGG is an excellent choice! Indeed, German and French bands also have a significant impact on progressive rock. I think you gave me a good idea, creating a list just with bands from outside the UK. If you have a few more names it would help even more. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for the comment! These bands really helped shape prog rock and are still references today. You can't talk about prog without mentioning this group!
That's a valid opinion, especially considering the unique impact each of these bands had on progressive rock. Genesis really set many of the genre's standards, as did Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd. Thanks for commenting!
I would put Pink Floyd, then Jethro Tull, Yes, Rush, Marillion. I like Genesis, but it is overrated for me. What about Asia, Toto or Foreigner? I also did not see any prog metal bands on your list, is it because you see it as another category?
Very well noted, Magma could indeed be on this list. We will consider it for a future list, or even a more specific one about Zeuhl. Thanks for commenting!
Great list! I wouldn't argue with the bands placement on the list. This is highly subjective. Most of the bands mentioned were highly influential in prog rock development. I was a bit surprised by the absence of Frank Zappa on the list and a total absence of later prog bands like Flower KIngs, Spocks Beard, Neal Morse, Haken, Big Big Train etc. Yes, you can't fit all of them into the top 20, but IMHO some of them definitely exerted more influence on the modern prog then some of the bands on the list. And what is more important, they keep the prog alive!
You missed out Barclay James Harvest, they were the first to play and did in front of 80,000 People for free in Berlin after the Wall came down. A Concert For The People. Porcupine Tree are in the Neo Prog. Category, 1990s+. Prog. is 1970s+ [I got a Fuzz Guitar, Oh my goodness gracious]
@@mamertobernal4460 I didn't know that they played in E. Germany before the wall came down. 250,000, the same Day E. Germans found out that the Beatles had split.
Nice to see some progressive bands other than the usual Brits in your list. I do however confess to having nailed the same top four as you. I’d have put Genesis and Tull higher and it’s also good to see Camel scoring well ~ they never seem to get the credit they truly deserve. As for other names? I’ll throw Wobbler into the mix.
Glad you liked the diverse mix in the list! It’s great to hear that our top four align with yours. Genesis and Jethro Tull definitely have a strong case for higher placements, and Camel’s unique sound deserves more recognition. Wobbler is an excellent suggestion! They bring a fresh take on the genre. Do you have a favorite album or track from Wobbler that you think exemplifies their style?
@@BackingTrackCenter My professional musician stepson pointed me at Wobbler. I appreciate their use of period specific instruments pre-1975 especially keyboards. 2011’s Rites at Dawn is certainly very good and although I’ve yet to listen to it, 2017’s ‘From Silence To Somewhere’ was very well received and holds top rated album of the 21st century thus far in the Prog Archives database which is pretty impressive considering absolute gems like Rush’s magnificent swan song Clockwork Angels exists.
Glad you enjoyed the Italian and Chilean bands! It's always worth broadening horizons in prog rock, right? I'm happy you discovered new sounds. Thanks for commenting!

Great choices! Barclay James Harvest, Alan Parsons Project, and Supertramp are amazing, even if they're on the softer side of prog. What's your favorite album from them?
@@BackingTrackCenter Even in the Quietest Moments - Supertramp. Time Honoured Ghosts - Barclay James Harvest . The Turn of a Friendly Card - Alan Parsons Project
Pink Floyd which I love and listen almost every day is one of the first British psychedelic groups. They slowly departured from it through the period of "space rock" and became somehow progressive rock band after releasing "Ummagumma" (November 1969) and "Atom Heart Mother" (October 1970 ). With all due respect for Pink Floyd , position number 1 belongs to King Crimson because their album "In The Court Of The Crimson King" ( October 1969) is one of the most influential of the progressive rock genre. It is regarded as first mature and the greatest progressive rock albums of all time. Rush ( number 2 on your list above Yes and King Crimson ) moved towards progressive rock after Neil Peart joined the band on July 29, 1974 . Drummer Neil Peart credited the adventurous and innovative style of Michael Giles (drummer of King Crimson) as an influence on his own approach to percussion. Rush was also influenced by Yes ( influenced by King Crimson), Pink Floyd , Jethro Tull and Genesis (P.Gabriel and S.Hackett era). King Crimson not only influenced prog rock but for much wider spectrum of contemporary music beyond general rock genre. Thus , your inconsistent list reflects only your taste of music and is far cry from reality. Anyway , I am not a fan of contestation in music. Music is diversified as much as minds of human beings. Everybody has the right to his/her choice of music creation or admiration . My advise is: Please avoid any pretentious titles. Thus , to be honest ,the proper title your presentation should read : The 20 Most Influential Progressive Rock Bands According to Me .
Thank you for your detailed comment! It's clear that you've given a lot of thought to the history and impact of these bands. The list is subjective and reflects a perspective on the most influential bands in progressive rock as a whole, not only focusing on the musical influence exerted on other bands, but also the power to influence people to begin to appreciate progressive rock. Your points about King Crimson and Rush add valuable context to the discussion. As you mentioned, music is deeply personal, and everyone's experience and taste shape their opinions.
Cool vid. But Amon Düll II, Can, Magma ? For me they are n°1 with King Crimson & Gong. Anyway most of thse band in the vid could be n°1. Love Los Jaivas too
Cool comment! Amon Düül II, Can, and Magma are truly giants of experimental and progressive rock. Putting those names together with King Crimson and Gong makes total sense for fans of that more avant-garde side. Thanks for commenting!
I would add Curved Air. They were at it very early and were absolutely progressive. I consider them far more progressive than psychedelic. As with all these lists--order is always up for debate. Thanks for including Renaissance.
Curved Air is an amazing addition! They really brought something unique with their mix of rock and classical elements. And Renaissance is a band that deserves recognition! What's your favorite album from them?
What about Rare Bird, Gryphon and Kansas? In Germany many interesting prog rock bands stream. Yes and King Crimson defined prog rock from their first albums, while Pink Floyd delved into experiments and searches.
Great point! Rare Bird, Gryphon, and Kansas are indeed influential in prog rock. And yes, many German prog rock bands have made significant contributions. I agree that Yes and King Crimson were foundational, while Pink Floyd explored different directions. Thanks for the comment!
Rare Bird were such a great band, I’m so glad you pointed them out!! I don’t know if they were « that » influencial as they never really got the recognition they deserved (except for Sympathy ofc) but the association of two fantastic keyboardist and the powerful and sensational voice of Steve Gould truly was something
Can't complain at all! Thanks for including Renaissance, Camel, and the Italians. Honourable mentions to Focus, Kansas, Mike Oldfield. List them alphabetically because they're all great.
Thanks for the support! Kansas, Focus, and Mike Oldfield definitely deserve a mention, and I agree-they're all amazing. An alphabetical list could be fair!

Good choice! Uriah Heep has a distinctive and influential sound, blending hard rock with progressive elements. They definitely deserve a spot on the list! Thanks for the comment!
Very interesting, but Genesis and Premiata Forneria Marconi deserve a much better position. I am italian and the PFM's influence on the italian music scene was (and still is, considering the concerts they still give) fundamental
True, both could be higher on the list. PFM's influence goes beyond the borders of Italy, they have conquered the world with their incredible music. Thanks for commenting!
It seems to me that the author confused the concepts of “influential” and “best”. I think the most influential are King Crimson, ELP, Soft Machine, Yes, Genesis. they influenced subsequent generations of musicians, even from non-progressive scenes, such as New Wave. The rest are just great bands. Who were your influences, for example, Reinessance or Moody Blues, or Jethro Tull which I love very much? In principle, no one. These are diamonds that sparkle on their own.
You're right about the influence of those bands, but the list really focuses on the most influential, which aren't necessarily the "best." The idea is to highlight those that influenced the sound of other bands as well as those that inspired people to enter the world of progressive rock. Thanks for commenting!
Relayer is definitely a masterpiece, and "The Gates of Delirium" is epic! It's hard to disagree with such a passionate opinion about Yes. Thanks for commenting!

@@BackingTrackCenter Okay, anytime. Actually all first six Horslips albums are great! Have you heard Joanna Newsom? I believe she is genius of our time...
King Crimson definitely has a strong claim for the top spot, especially for their pioneering role in prog rock. The other bands you mentioned also have their unique place in the genre. Thanks for sharing your ranking!
You got it wrong.....the best undesputed prog album was close to the edge by YES. They take top spot , they practically invented the genre....just because pink Floyd sold more albums, doesn't make them top dogs. A single member of Genesis or Yes , has more musical ability than the entire Floyd put together.
I certainly understand your point of view, but the idea behind this list was to talk about "influence" in the broadest sense of the word, not only among musicians, but in relation to people in general. PF and Rush, for example, were the gateway for many people to get to know KC, GG, Genesis, etc. But they are not necessarily better. Thanks for your comment!
These are amazing bands! Each brought something unique to prog rock. Eloy and Nektar have that spacey vibe, while Focus and Curved Air have their own innovative blends. Thanks for commenting!
These lists invite alternative suggestions. Somewhere here should be the Hungarian band After Crying, King-Crimson-ish but much more neo classical orchestration and jazz virtuosity. Go find them.
After Crying really does have that King Crimson vibe mixed with a more neoclassical and jazz feel. Great suggestion for those who enjoy more complex prog sounds!
@ I’m two thirds of the way through their ‘Soul Alert’ album. Thank you so much for introducing me to them. Wonderful musicianship and full of melodic and rhythmical ideas👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
A Canadian must have compiled this list ! Rush at Number 1 ? I hear Yes , Genesis , Tull , ELP and King Crimson in Rush's music but I don't hear Rush's influences in them .
Rush may have taken influence from those bands, but they also helped popularize prog and brought many new fans to the genre with their unique sound. Hard not to acknowledge their impact, right? Thanks for commenting!
Very nice list, and ofcourse too short and subjective. But mabey you,re right, the ranking based on influence on other bands is possible. But the definition of progressive is for me not always complex or psycotic. I think the beatles were in there time also progressive. But a few names as Ozric tentacles, Uk, Hawkwind, Supersister could be my names for a place the next top30😅
I agree, lists are always subjective and too short to include everyone. The criterion of influence can vary, and the definition of progressive is broad-the Beatles were definitely progressive in their time! Ozric Tentacles, UK, Hawkwind, and Supersister would be great additions to the next list. 😅 Thanks for the comment!
I have been around more than 60 years and your list is a fantastic one. In my humble opinion, did not miss any one. Remember this was not suppose to be ranked list, and to be influential in Progressive rock you do not have to list only British bands. I am glad you place in the list RPI and at least one Hispanic Band! Thanks for the effort......
Thanks for the kind words! I’m glad you appreciated the variety in the list. Including Italian Progressive Rock and a Hispanic band was important to capture the global influence of prog rock. Your support means a lot!
Exactly! MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Each person has different preferences and criteria. In the end, the important thing is to celebrate the diversity and richness of progressive rock!
What about avant prog? Bands and musicians such as Univers Zero, Henry Cow, Fred Frith, Art Zoyd. Influential jazz rock bands: Mahavishny Orchestra, Return to Forever, Weather Report, Chicago. French folk and prog folk: Malicorne, Tri Yann, Gwendal, Avaric. Defenetily Magma! One of the most influential prog rock band!
Great band suggestions! You’re absolutely right about Magma, which is indeed one of the most influential in progressive rock. It's always nice to see these important contributions being acknowledged. Thanks for commenting!
20 are too few. One very influential in Magma, who started a completely new genre and has a number of follower artists worldwide. Dream Theather started the whole Progressive-Metal subgenre but has some predecessors in Uriah Heep and Deep Purple. Some Eastern Europe artists deserve a mention: After Crying, Collegium Musicum. I would have inclueded also Kansas and the Canadian Harmonium. From the North, Samla Mammas Manna and Pekka Pohjola. The German Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Ash Ra. But most of all, influential to all those who record at home: Mike Oldfield.
@@BackingTrackCenter I like your interesting 20 candidates for most influential prog internationally. An impossible task to determine objectively I think. Polls would show different results in different places and with different participants. Problem is most who answer would be music enthusiasts, not musicians who USE and PASS ON the influence.

Second place for Rush is just ridiculous
I see your point. Rankings can vary a lot depending on individual perspectives. Rush has a large fan base, but might not be everyone's top choice. What would your ideal order for prog rock bands be? Thanks for the comment!
Well, the title was "..most INFLUENTAL..." (not "biggest fanbase"). With that, there is essentially two criteria tha should go into the ranking:
- Bands/artists that were essential for the forming of the genre in the late 1960s, and
- Bands that later contributed to a MAJOR change or evolution of the genre.
Much as I have big respect for Rush, they do not qualify high wrt any of those.
In no particular order, 6 out of the top 10 must include:
King Crimson, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Yes, Genesis.

I get that you think Focus deserves to be in the top 10, but lists are always a matter of personal taste. As for Rush, even if you see them as more of a straight-ahead rock band, a lot of people consider their work, especially with Neil Peart, to have significant progressive elements.

Good choice! Uriah Heep has a distinctive and influential sound, blending hard rock with progressive elements. They definitely deserve a spot on the list! Thanks for the comment!
my :
1 Gentle Giant
2 BMS
3 Jethro Tull
4 King Crimson
5 Caravan
6 PFM
7 ELP
8 Renaissance
9 Genesis
10 Gong
Great list, man! Very diverse and full of prog classics. Interesting to see Gentle Giant at the top, they're brilliant!
Of course!
A bunch of italian bands as influences, but not a single MOST INFLUENTIAL BAND...
MAGMA!
Prog you, sir, prog you very hard!
👍👍
Without any doubts - Genesis (the Gabriel years) had to be placed to No. 1
Rush over King Crimson, you are joking?
It's a controversial choice, I know! Rush and King Crimson have different styles, but both are super influential.
@@BackingTrackCenter It is not a question of styles, but how innovative they really were or not. This is the difference between art and craft.
I would also add Rick Wakeman as a solo artist. His keyboard stylings have been very influential.
Rick Wakeman is a true legend! His solo albums are amazing and inspired many in prog.
Yes is at the top. Relayer is the greatest album ever and the Gates of Delirium the greatest song ever written.
Relayer is definitely a masterpiece, and "The Gates of Delirium" is epic! It's hard to disagree with such a passionate opinion about Yes. Thanks for commenting!
Agree 100%
@@johnh2850 I would put Close to the Edge above Relayer, but agree wholeheartedly that Yes should be at the top. I love Rush, but I’d put them at 5 or 6.
Lol it's not better than close to the edge
@@tuskact4overheaven873 You may prefer Close to the Edge to Relayer; I put it as number two after Relayer; but why the LOL?
I have a great admiration for Progressive Rock!
But there are few legitimate bands that I like.
My favorites:
• Rush
• Kansas
• Yes
For me, it is YES, ELP, Pink Floyd. I saw all three in concert but I am basing mine on their albums.
Seeing those three live must have been an incredible experience! Basing your list on their albums makes total sense, as they are masterpieces.
I would add folk rock bands:
Fairport Convention, Steeleye Span, Pentangle, Stackridge, Horslips. Some their albums can be describe as prog folk...
I agree! Bands like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span have a strong influence on prog folk. Do you have a favorite album from any of them?
@@BackingTrackCenter Some of my favorities:
Steeleye Span, "Parcel of Rogues".
Horslips, "Drive the Cold Winter Away".
Trader Horn, "Morning Way"
Hedgehog Pie, "The Green Lady"
Man, I haven’t listened to "Drive the Cold Winter Away" by Horslips or "The Green Lady" by Hedgehog Pie yet, but they’re on my list now! Thanks for the recommendations!
@@BackingTrackCenter Okay, anytime. Actually all first six Horslips albums are great!
Have you heard Joanna Newsom? I believe she is genius of our time...
for me, King Crimson is #1 followed by Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa, Genesis, and The Nice should be picked in top 20
King Crimson definitely has a strong claim for the top spot, especially for their pioneering role in prog rock. The other bands you mentioned also have their unique place in the genre. Thanks for sharing your ranking!
Superbe compilation - thanx a lot !!!
Thanks for the compliment! Glad you liked the list. Is there any band you would add?
Focus just wrote one of the most played progressive songs ever: Hocus Pocus!
This song is brilliant and addictive!
Nice list. Included rarities To me. Hey guys check out Finnish bands called Wigwam and Finnforest
Thanks for the tip! Wigwam and Finnforest are really cool Finnish bands and have a unique sound.
@@BackingTrackCenter Solo Pekka Pohjola albums are great too!
@@richardcyrka6682 Phil Collins is a clown
Curved Air, Eloy, Nektar, Focus 👀
These are amazing bands! Each brought something unique to prog rock. Eloy and Nektar have that spacey vibe, while Focus and Curved Air have their own innovative blends. Thanks for commenting!
These lists invite alternative suggestions. Somewhere here should be the Hungarian band After Crying, King-Crimson-ish but much more neo classical orchestration and jazz virtuosity. Go find them.
After Crying really does have that King Crimson vibe mixed with a more neoclassical and jazz feel. Great suggestion for those who enjoy more complex prog sounds!
@@BackingTrackCenterthey were admirers of Barclay James Harvest and the BJH bassist guested with them. I think that was John Lees
Ok, they might be not that influencial, but speaking of hungarian bands I like to mention Special Providence. Saw them live, they blew me away!
@@boredbynature thanks for the recommendation. I will go and find them👍
@ I’m two thirds of the way through their ‘Soul Alert’ album.
Steve Hillage
For me, Gentle Giant are the best and sadly underrated! I am 62, I was born and live in Moscow. Let there be PEACE! 🙂
Gentle Giant is truly amazing and deserves more recognition! And yes, let there be peace! 😊 Thanks for the comment!
You’ll never satisfy everyone, right?
Exactly! MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE. Each person has different preferences and criteria. In the end, the important thing is to celebrate the diversity and richness of progressive rock!
UK band Family. John Lenon's favourite band at one point.
Um...CURVED AIR ..top 5 for me
What about avant prog?
Your suggestions are undoubtedly incredible, we would need at least 100 spaces on the list to accommodate the best ones. Thanks for commenting!
Happy The Man, Eloy, Focus, Anglagard, The Flower Kings, Dream Theater, Pendragon, IQ, Arena
Man, solid list! Happy The Man and Eloy, often kinda overlooked, right? And The Flower Kings and Dream Theater are killing it! Great picks 👏
Dream Theater это более progressive metal чем progressive rock
Focus ????
Where would you place Focus on this list?
@@BackingTrackCenter Maybe close to 10th?
@@BackingTrackCenter I like your interesting 20 candidates for most influential prog internationally. An impossible task to determine objectively I think. Polls would show different results in different places and with different participants. Problem is most who answer would be music enthusiasts, not musicians who USE and PASS ON the influence.
@@BackingTrackCenter to second place, right behind ELP
UK were amazing, But maybe too short lived …
1. Genesis 2. Pink Floyd 3. Yes 4. Jethro Tull 5. Marillion ...and everyone has their own list
That's it, everyone has their own favorite list! I think this diversity of opinions is what makes progressive rock so interesting. Thanks for commenting!
Fichissimo 👍💯 Ciao dall'Italia 👍💯🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹
Ciao!

It's a good list but I wish it had been extended to a "top 30" to include bands like: Henry Cow, Greenslade, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Matching Mole, Gryphon, UK, Aphrodite's Child, etc
That's a good suggestion! A "top 30" would definitely make room for more of these amazing bands. Thanks for the comment!
Ummagumma îs a great album....and Music from the body...first Waters...
Ummagumma is indeed a remarkable album, and Music from the Body is also an intriguing work, with an experimental and innovative approach, especially for its time.
Glad to see I'm not the only one who appreciates Ummagumma.
Thé creators were Moody Blues with lush orchestrals stuffs ,introduction of the flûte and Mellotron pionnered by Mike Pinder ,slightly earlier despassed by huge Procol Harum with 4 virtuosos ,brooker,Fisher,Trower,Wilson....
Moody Blues and Procol Harum truly paved the way with innovations like the Mellotron and orchestral arrangements! They're essential to understanding the beginnings of prog. Thanks for commenting!
