The fancy lock washer is called an 'internal tooth lock washer. They used to be used a good bit on aircraft, and are great for use on electrical ground lugs and the like. There are also similar 'external tooth lock washers'. You often hear both the internal & external types being called 'Star Washers' Love the videos, Thanks!
The kit only engages the axle so if you put it in 4H and don't lock up the axle- you're still only in 2wd. If you put the transfer case in 4L and don't lock the axle you're in 2L essentially. The propeller shaft will spin the diff, but the wheels up front won't drive. It just spins the diff and the stub in the center of the axle.
I've had one on my 87 wrangler for over 10 years. Basically no failure points. Awesome upgrade to any 4x4. With the combination of lockers, it's unstoppable. I honestly can't believe you don't hear more people swapping out electronic and vacuum systems for these. There's no question of engaging or disengaging. Ever. Plus you can play with having the t case engaged but having the front axle disengaged. Wish I had found this when I installed mine, but it's really very straightforward.
Attempting this tomorrow morning on my 95 Ram 2500 V10. I watched the video twice. I think it helped me understand the instructions better. I found a vacuum line off near the transfer case. I fixed it and it still didn't work,so decided on the cable lock system.i parked on frozen ground, the next day the temps climbed to 60 degrees and the ground got all soggy. Nothing more pathetic than getting stuck in wet grass next to your driveway. Lol
lol It's worth it if it's got the Cummins engine in it. They're great on reliability, economy, and still have enough power. You don't buy the Cummins for the Dodge though... you do buy the Dodge to get the Cummins.
If you don't want the drill bit penetrating to far, cut a piece of hose to length and put over the bit to shorten the stroke. Less chance of hitting something on the other side. Great video, Thanks.
I had my 4x4 go out crawling up an ice road along a cliff up the canyon. I was in a long line of cars and couldn't go fast enough to have enough vacuum to stay locked in. I was not impressed with the vacuum system at all. This requires two steps, but well worth the reliability.
Well, this 2nd gen. RAM fanboy is thankful that this video is here as I have the kit to install on the front Dana44 used in the RAM 1500 w/ 5.9L Magnum v8. Thank you for having this here as it helps A LOT!!!!!!!!!
awesome video. I know next to nothing about deisel engines. Everything I have learned was for the four stroke, but on Trucks on TNT they had a deisel pickup and they installed a five position switch to adjust the torque. And you can set it more aggresive or less. In one position he was doing burn-outs and in another he was hauling a fifth wheel. I like how your videos are thorough because they always jump around and never show the whole job.
I like this way- I can go full mechanical. There's less to fail. Those motors are great. And Mopar thinks so too. You can tell they're proud of them by the price they ask.
Thanks, Brian. I know you are very busy. Thankfully, you are also organized. I REALLY appreciate all your hard work and your generous sharing of knowledge and skills.
i was actually looking for a chevy version install of this but watched your video. Just wanted to let you know I thought you did a really good job on the video. I thought I was watching trucks lol
I just did what you did and dropped the fork on the ground and busted the antler off of it. Not happy. I'm dead in the water now until a new fork comes. My hardest part was those stupid E- clips. Update: Just installed the fork and works fine. Actually have to much cable sticking out have it laying on the floor next to my 4wd shifter now. Works great. Love the 2wd Low. Have to be rolling at times for it to engage. Seems the splines don't always line up
This is amazing. I absolutely loathe automatic locking hubs, if you can get the temperamental things to engage they won't disengage later! That said, I don't want to get out of my truck to turn manual hubs either... This is a great solution.
I didn't get a template to make the hole in the firewall for the cable I have been trying to get one but no luck can you send me a copy of your template I sure would appreciate it
idk how you do it man, but you have somehow been a part of all the needs I need for all of my three rides. (Honda accord, dodge ram, willys jeep) I'm very grateful... always know who to trust!
Jeez, I'm back after 5 years. Time for my install on this one. Word to the wise, don't disconnect your vaccum to this without commiting to the mod... It grinds randomly.
its so odd i have a 1994 ram 2500 4wd gas burner with 250,000 miles never had a problem with it working. but i read somewhere that at least once per month you need to engage the 4wd which i do works perfect so far
As a alignment tech i love working on dodge because their suspension seems to give out very early, i dont know what it is but i love me some suspension work.
I have an '03 Ram, and I like your lights behind the grille. Could you post a video about their installation- especially how you mounted the lights, where and how you wired them into the fuse panel, best place for the switch, etc. Thanks for all your help and knowledge over the last three years. Keep up the great work!
I love this Idea, 2 low rocks for trailering in any 4X4. our old Cherokee had the same set up but the vacuum line (frame to front end) would always break so we would climb under and manually lock it.. it was a pain but we had to have 4X4 where we lived up big hallow road. this would have been nice then as well.
C-clips are always a PITA. I went to a second hand store and bought a screwdriver with a 3/16" wide blade, heated the end and bent at 90 degrees for about 1/4". Use it as a lever pulling back on the handle and or twist sideways. All c- clips out within 2 minutes with no damage to self or parts.
Some '01's have disc in rear- mine doesn't. It's drum : ( I plan to swap the axle some time in the future. Mine's just in such good shape it's hard to justify. As for shift on the fly, I have to do both things, but it does it fine while moving for 4wd high or low on the posilock, but the truck still likes to be in Neutral for the 4wd low on the transfer case side.
I like how they did it on some years of the Ram, and I believe all Durangos and Dakotas aside from the newest Durango, the wheels stay engaged to the front differential, the only disconnect is in the transfer case. I don't understand why the wheels should disengage from the front differential at all personally.
The d30 in my jeep has that, they used it till 91 in cherokees then smartened up and got rid of it. We just pull the cover off, take the C clip out and slide the fork over, and then put the clip back in.
Thank you so much for this video (and all your vids) man are they helpful and detailed!! We have been looking for a fix to this problem in my sons truck and finally we have it.
I was under the impression that there was not diesel 2002- only 1500's with gas while they retooled for the new body style in 2003. (at least in Canada) Mine is a 2001 Cummins.
Thanks for the Video instruction... I noticed the oil coming out when you pry out the old housing, I never heard you mentioning anything about replacing the oil? Do fill back up? And with what type of oil? I'm in the process of installing posi-lok on my 97 1500.
Thank you. Great Vid!!! I have been have problems with my Dodge Cummings 4X4 engaging into 4wd (I suspect a vacuum issue) and needed to add to my list to trouble shoot. Not now!!!! I am installing Posi-lock too. Still problems with 4th gear not enaging. What engages the 4th gear? The gear box is external form tranny. I am limited to 60 mph or 2500 rpm.
This video is super helpful. The little nipple and elbow lines on the drivers side in the engine bay, do gassers have that in the same location or is it just diesels? Working on an 01 ram 1500 5.9
thank you brian i have a 2000 3500 dually 5.9 quad witch i bought in long island from some shyster screw ...& my bro works in a auto parts store i ordered the vacuum pot whoops then found your Vid ... so i ordered the Posi Lok Kit i wish i could see wair you drilled the hole better.. i live in snow country need 4 wd who build your bumper have you ever worked with the EDGE BOOST I HAVE ONE BUT IT CAME IN THE GLOVE BOX THE DEALER REALY BUTCHERED THIS TRUCK UP.. THANK YOU AGAIN
That's awesome- I've never laid eyes on an 02 Diesel Ram. They're incredibly rare around here. Where did you find yours? I got an 01 because I wanted one that body style, but as new and low miles as I could find.
Hey Brian, Thanks for your videos. Made installing my post-loc and steering stabilizer today way easier. Where do I top off the front gear oil after installing the posiloc? thanks
I was also wondering if you had a video on how to install locker for the rear end? I've done them on gm's and helped once on a ford but I know dodge is different
got a truck with a cheap knockoff of that and it never engaged properly. friggen nightmare. this looks much better especially with the adjustment in the cab.
When I was replacing the clutch plate on my 95 dodge v-10 4x4 I had an over eager friend start pulling vacuum lines off the top of my transmission verses pulling the entire plug. I can’t find any order to put them back in and my 4x4 isn’t engaging. Any help would be appreciated.
I installed this on my 24v, for some reason pulling out engages my 4wd and pushing it in disengages, what did I do wrong? It's not a huge deal but confusing as I followed the video instructions (much better than the phamplet I might add) any hints?
ok u said when 4wd engages it pushes on button to turn light on but when its set up in 4wd it pulls away from the button for light.. is it when its pulled away from button it goes on because if not the whole thing has to be turned around?? I'm about to install one on mine that's y I ask.... thanks
Have you had issues with your posi lock rattling? Mine makes an annoying vibration in the cab and stops when I put slight pressure on the red button.Customer service wasn't much help, said fork wasn't fully disengaging..... Thanks for any information!
I ended up doing some research and saw Bosch supposed to be a better unit so i got the PREMIUM one, i noticed that the sensor end isn't perforated like the OE one, external portion is thicker so i hope it fits? If not off to the muffler shop to put in a new bung. Price was normal as only 58.00, i'll install/try tomorrow, getting too dark now-- even comes with anti seize
I can’t get a straight answer anywhere so when the 4 wheel is not engaged on our trucks the front shaft will spin freely I get a random pop sometimes in 4 wheel but doesn’t do it enough for me to find it thanks for any help
Thanks for the video, I have 2 questions...with this conversion does this provide real fully locked front or will 1 wheel spin if it loses traction? 2nd hw was it originally with vacuum? Fully locking or limited slip? Thanks
Nice tactic of having the eye candy catch us off guard at the end great video man much appreciated
Thanks. Excellent step by step install guide. How did you test it to see if it worked?

Thanks- I have six position set up on mine too, but it's digital. Diesels are fun for stuff like that. I love watching stuff like that too.
I had my 4x4 go out crawling up an ice road along a cliff up the canyon. I was in a long line of cars and couldn't go fast enough to have enough vacuum to stay locked in. I was not impressed with the vacuum system at all. This requires two steps, but well worth the reliability.

On my to do list
I have a 4x4, and if the 4x4 works, good. If not, that’s cool too. It doesn’t affect drivability:

My vacuum actuator just went out while in 4wd going up a steep road in my 01 3500. Embarrassing! Got the posi lock kit! Thanks for the great video
Great video. Thanks. My boy just bought a 1994 2500 and it has this installed. We didn’t know what it was. Now we know how it works.
Thanks, Brian. I know you are very busy. Thankfully, you are also organized. I REALLY appreciate all your hard work and your generous sharing of knowledge and skills.
Hmm this should be fun to make work in my Cherokee gave me kind of a good idea how 🤔
how about weld the axle sleeve to the locked position and be done...
It's Posi-Lock part #400 and Sandman Auto parts is a good place as well as Truck Accessory liquidators.
i was actually looking for a chevy version install of this but watched your video. Just wanted to let you know I thought you did a really good job on the video. I thought I was watching trucks lol

I'm having a hard time conceptualizing the switch, is the switch normally open (NO) and only off when it hits the very top of the switch (
Sure. I'll put in on the video suggestion list/calendar.
This is amazing. I absolutely loathe automatic locking hubs, if you can get the temperamental things to engage they won't disengage later! That said, I don't want to get out of my truck to turn manual hubs either... This is a great solution.

I don't know a lot about them honestly. I'd have to ask Kevin- he's my go to guy on diff's.
y la segunda parte del video para ver como funciona el 4wd
Thank you!
what would happen if it was stuck on and you went down a road with it?
Great video. explained the issue I am having with my 88 Jeep YJ !!! THANK YOU
So with this I can delete all vacume lines that go to the transfer case?
I thought you sounded kinda like Mr. Rodgers. Great video very helpful. Thanks.
Great Job--Thanks I just bought one to install
Great video vary helpful as my 4x4 gave out on me as I'm trying to plow now I know what's wrong

adds alot of life to your bearing
4x4 low but leave front axle disengaged gives you 2x4 in low. Now you can back a trailer up slow without riding the clutch...sweet.
One reason I plan to install one in my "01 Ram 1500
@briansmobile1 Can you scrap all the vacuum lines to the transfer case?
Right on!
No, I have a 2002 24 valve cummins diesel 2500 extended cab. It was the last year for that model before the body style change.
The d30 in my jeep has that, they used it till 91 in cherokees then smartened up and got rid of it.
We just pull the cover off, take the C clip out and slide the fork over, and then put the clip back in.
Thank you so much for this video (and all your vids) man are they helpful and detailed!! We have been looking for a fix to this problem in my sons truck and finally we have it.
glad i watched this video now i know what wrong with my four wheel drive and how to fix it
The beginning got me😂 my vacuum line was bad and I got stuck and that’s exactly how it went😂
I ordered it online from Promark offroad. I'm not sure.
awesome video, great details, big thumbs up.
Will this work for a v8 dodge ram?
Great Video Thanks Briann
Gives me the idea if needed to!! Thanks man
I was under the impression that there was not diesel 2002- only 1500's with gas while they retooled for the new body style in 2003. (at least in Canada) Mine is a 2001 Cummins.

Welcome!
Like the ones with signal lights in them on the King Ranch edition?
I think this one is a three speed with overdrive- no 4th.
Thank you- you're too kind.
They should sell that kit with a new slider clamp already installed on the new cover

I HAVE ONE BUT IT CAME IN THE GLOVE BOX THE DEALER REALY BUTCHERED THIS TRUCK UP.. THANK YOU AGAIN
My truck is a Dodge. But this truck should be similar to that year span on the F150s.
Thanks!
Is it normal for a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 when engaging 4L to hear a grinding sound and then when you going back to neutral then 4H hear it again? Thanks
Box of PMC bronze on the floor. Nice
Now that was interesting and educational. Thanks.
Thank you for the great video!!!!!
Using the proper snap ring player setup will remove those e clips with ease
That's awesome- I've never laid eyes on an 02 Diesel Ram. They're incredibly rare around here. Where did you find yours? I got an 01 because I wanted one that body style, but as new and low miles as I could find.

The diff cover fill bolt
I was also wondering if you had a video on how to install locker for the rear end? I've done them on gm's and helped once on a ford but I know dodge is different
I just ripped that exact unit out of my 98 thought it was for high idle, shit
It's electronic/hydraulic.
Anyone have a problem with it not disengaging all the way? Mine doesn't pull the sleeve over enough and will grind against the splines.
Use the fine adjust that he demonstrated at the beginning. When you disengage it, turn the adjustment until the grinding stops...
got a truck with a cheap knockoff of that and it never engaged properly. friggen nightmare. this looks much better especially with the adjustment in the cab.
I know you did this video years ago, are you able to shift on the fly with the new cable?
I installed this on my 24v, for some reason pulling out engages my 4wd and pushing it in disengages, what did I do wrong? It's not a huge deal but confusing as I followed the video instructions (much better than the phamplet I might add) any hints?
Yeah like the Newer towing mirrors on the newer body style dodges they look mean.
ok u said when 4wd engages it pushes on button to turn light on but when its set up in 4wd it pulls away from the button for light.. is it when its pulled away from button it goes on because if not the whole thing has to be turned around?? I'm about to install one on mine that's y I ask.... thanks
After you finish do you have to replace the oil in the axle that came out.
Nice Video Brian. I wish you and your family a Happy and safe Thanksgiving Holiday.
Mark
Have you had issues with your posi lock rattling? Mine makes an annoying vibration in the cab and stops when I put slight pressure on the red button.Customer service wasn't much help, said fork wasn't fully disengaging..... Thanks for any information!

does it really make a difference with going over to that and will it help my 5.9 gas truck at all
Thanks for the video, I have 2 questions...with this conversion does this provide real fully locked front or will 1 wheel spin if it loses traction? 2nd hw was it originally with vacuum? Fully locking or limited slip? Thanks
Depends on what your diff is. This only engages 4x4
Same
wouldn't say it if it wasn't true. The most common frames that i patch at work are chevys and jeeps.
