    Personally, what I would’ve done in this situation is sat Tinker down in an empty room and just... talked. Try to explain things a little bit at a time, leave room for any questions he wanted to ask, and put the decision in his hands. If Tinker ends up choosing to go back to his old ways, memories or no, then that proves that it was basically inevitable. If he freely turns himself in, then at least it’s his choice and an informed one at that. And if he goes back to trying to do good, he hopefully does so with the added motivation to make up for his past wrongs.
    Of course, that also brings up the question of whether it’s right to tell him the truth when he may very well regret hearing you out afterwards... ^^;

      Absolutely agreed. Educate him, and give him the full truth about who he was, what he used to do, how he used to do it, and lay it all out there for him. Give him the chance to either commit to staying as the friendly Mr. Tinker, or reverting to his old ways, but if he does revert, he's doing it _on our terms_ in a scenario where we can stop him before he gets anything started.
      And if he does stay Mr. Tinker, he's doing so in full knowledge of who he was, and the things he's done, and probably appropriately horrified to boot. That way, even if the proper memories themselves flood back, his old personality now has to contend with that horror he feels toward his old self's actions. Bonus points if there is an opportunity to let Mr. Tinker help with thwarting a threat arisen from some old assets of Eggman's. Makes me wonder if/what Mr. Tinker might have been able/willing to contribute to the efforts against Neo Metal Sonic.
      As it is, no one ever really told him what the deal was with Eggman, or his history, they simply let him remain ignorant. Which meant when the memories returned, there was no opposition from Mr. Tinker. Tinker had been told that Eggman was an evil genius that made a lot of people afraid, and that was all he knew - and so, he was afraid of this mysterious Eggman too, and when Starline started trying to turn him back, he expressed that he didn't want to be Eggman... but he didn't really understand _why_ beyond a general idea from everyone that he was bad. Then he remembered it all, and there was no existing horror or feelings of repentance or anything of the sort to give him any reason to _not_ just immediately go "Wait, yes, I remember now, that's what I was doing, well, let's get back to it!" If anything, it opened the possibility for Mr. Tinker to even perhaps feel upset with the heroes for not telling him the truth about who he used to be, further incentivizing his return to being Eggman.
      The story (and the video) deals with the question of whether an innocent man should be punished for Eggman's crimes - the idea of executing a man for crimes he committed but doesn't remember is a controversial one at best. But in a situation like that, perhaps allowing the man to learn what he's done, and be _horrified_ by it all might be the closest you come to executing the man he used to be. Complete prevention might not be possible, but making the new personality aware, horrified, and repentant for the things his old self did is about as close as you can come. Even when memories return, the new man has incentive to reject his old personality and his old identity, because the man he is _now_ despises what he did before. If you can get that to stick? Eggman is dead - and compassion and learning is what killed him.

    I honestly wonder if wiping Robotnik's memory would actually make him a normal person in reality. Robotnik's past behaviours indicate he is certainly a "psychopath" whom does not have the neural capacity to feel empathy for others. Most people are not able to take pleasure in the death and extreme suffering of others without their mirror neurons activating or showing theory of mind and feeling pain. However a small portion of society does not feel that pain when others suffer. Hitler, Robotnik, and many serial killers can be neurologically wired to be classed as "psychopath."
    Perhaps it comes down to the big question in criminal justice of "nature vs nurture." For many less serious criminals we can say nurture plays a big part, but for extreme cases like Robotnik, I'd say nature plays a very big part.

    • @onthebay15
      @onthebay15 3 роки тому +66

      Well that depends on which eggman you r talking about. Archie eggman I believe is a psychopath but canon eggman is not. He just wants to rule the world. The only person he intended to kill was sonic back in adventure 2 ( i know he threatened to kill amy too but if he wanted to he could have and killed tails too as there was nothing stopping him from doing so) and only then and when he thought he did kill sonic he called him "his admirable adversary". Also in adventure 2 when he found out that shadow wanted to destroy the earth, he teamed up with sonic to prevent that from happening. Even in the event of sonic unleashed when eggman released dark gaia and split the earth no one died. He had everything under control for the most part.

      The problem is that you can teach and make good people do horrible things and murder. Look at the nazis. Soldiers that carried out horrible acts of morbid brutality and terror on civilians. And in war as long as you don't see their faces, it's much easier to kill them. They often justified their crimes by saying they simply followed orders.
      "With or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil - that takes religion.“ - Steven Weinberg.
      Though my dad responded with: That's for all ideologies.

    Okay 👏 here’s my take on this storyline: The way they handled it was fine, but the more and more it gets brought up, and the more it gets called into question, the more muddled and complicated it becomes.
    Should Sonic kill Eggman? Probably yeah, but he's not gonna, whether it's because he doesn't want to, or SEGA doesn't want him to.
    Like you've said before, they're not gonna make Sonic a killer. Shadow maybe, but even then that seems unlikey nowadays.
    Besides, I think it's better that we don't call that into question, because Sonic and Eggman's dynamic is fun, and it really feels like these guys rely on each other to have this conflict at all.
    Sonic's always eager for the next adventure, and Eggman found a perfect challenge in Sonic, and that drives him to create bigger, badder robots.
    One of my favorite lines from (something that isn't even canon) Sonic and Tails R, is when Sonic says "You complete me." because in a way, that's true! One wouldn't exist (at least the way we know them) without the other.

    It's a hard choice. Overall, this shows that Eggman had a conscience. His brain actually functions normally, its just his intelligence that gets in the way. His anger, hatred, all of that stuff controls him.
    Since he seems to lack actual sociopathic and psychopathic tendencies, because amnesia wouldnt remove those traits.
    If he becomes Eggman after being Tinker for a long while, those old memories might stick around. It may not fix his anger, but it might mitigate it to the point where it can be managed. It might cause him to go on some sort of spiritual journey or inner quest to find out just what he is.
    This could be for the best, because in reality he shouldnt forget what he has done, the moments he shared and the emotions he felt, with the people here.
    Personally, a second chance in my opinion is always warrented. Though he shouldnt escape his punishment either; imagine the person he may become if he wakes up from amnesia in a cell and have months or years of memories of being punished for an unknowable crime only to realize "Even if I am the best I can be, I will be hated and hunted."
    He may end out a much more dangerous person, the only real way to fix this would be an execution... and thats a bag of worms I will not get into.

    Sonic's reasoning? "I guess I move too fast to have time to be all vengeful and stuff. I just do what's right at the time."
    I now Ian worked on both, and the IDW is trying to be much deeper, but still think it's good example of the same moral question.

    When you think about it, this story dosen't make sense. Yes its true, eggman has not been around since sonic forces ending, but is it worth to say that he lived, somehow lost his memory, (or pretending), and is now a good guy? Seemingly has some grinch themes along with it. But with shadow, he knows about the dangers of eggman and tries to warn sonic. I see how this is going from sonic and shadow's side, but we as the viewers know he will be back and ready to take down sonic and friends. But as the comics take us into a more darker tone after the war, it really does (in my case) leaves us with more questions than answers. So then what will we expect? Does eggman do threaten the town? Does he rise up his new army? Is a new villian finally taking place? Who knows, and btw great speed reading.

      That whole line of thought calls into question, "is deleting someone's memories basically killing them?"
      The morality is easy if it comes down to "would you rather die or would you rather live a new life with no memories from the old", it's still complicated, but at least there is a chance the person continues on
      Morality is harder if that person wasn't going to be executed however, some would say that you are basically killing them without actually killing, while others would argue it's still the same person, just with a blank slate, same natural skills, same muscle memory to do tasks, but without anything from before.
      Overall a subject that just goes down the never ending rabbit hole of consciousness

      I think the last Sonic game that captured how cruel he can be is Unleashed. While he isn't the final boss it is clear he's the main villain serving as the catalyst to the game's plot and they really went out of their way to make him a threat with having to defeat him as the stakes are raised. When Sonic is fighting him in the penultimate boss during free fall the music really captures how insane and unhinged he is saying things like "Die you miserable pincushion." Maybe Sonic Frontiers will give us the threatening Robotnik that we long for.

    As for the morality side of things...I don't really believe in the idea of needing to hold someone accountable for crimes if the person who did said crime is gone, or it was entirely an accident. I think the best course of action for someone like Mr. Tinker would be to leave him be but monitor him greatly.

But dont stop watching. NEVER stop watching. It's unfortunate that tinker will never have any privacy again, but that's the sacrifice he needs to make to LIVE.

  • @onthebay15
    @onthebay15 3 роки тому

    Definitely an interesting topic to explore. As you said in the beginning what is scary about terrible people is that they are PEOPLE. Justice calls for a suitable punishment for the consequences of ones actions especially if those consequences were intended (remember, it is not just the one person but a group of individuals who are responsible for the terrible events in our history). In this case with eggman he hasn't killed anyone even by the events caused by his actions no one died (he tried to kill sonic back in Adv. 2 and not only failed but has not attempted to do so again, just neutralize). Say this was the actual eggman who did lose his memories and became dr. Tinker, a suitable punishment would be imprisonment considering eggman's past crimes. Instead of imprisonment, it could also be public service which is exactly what tinker is doing though not as punishment but as intention. Plus him being actually nice after losing his memories only supports the possibility of good in eggman. Once someone kills however, it is a different story. A decision for a harsher punishment has to be made in order to keep other potential lives from being lost, because the person that killed is even more of a danger to everyone. Imagine if eggman had piles of corpses under his name, it would be irredeemable at that point even if he lost his memories and became a nicer person. That potential danger is still there. Luckily, eggman is not killer and that is enough for me to give him a chance of redemption.

    I sure liked to play with the idea of a Shadow, post Sonic Adventure and Shadow the Hedgehog, to be somewhat more depressed. I mean, he was created as an ultimate lifeform and weapon, almost helped to destroy the world in grief over the loss of his one and only friend and then lost his memories and then regained them. After the amnesia especially, he would be so confused and less secure of himself than Sonic Adventure Shadow, even more so after the Shadow the Hedgehog ending where he identifies himself as more harm than good.
    I'd honestly would like to see him and Sonic clash over that internal state of self worth and even Sonic helping Shadow to grow more confident again or whatever, but that might be because I happen to be depressed myself xD
