I like that they took a darker turn with this arc. Sonic stories should take themselves a little more seriously. I'm not saying they should be like Schindler's list or something, you can still make something serious while not making it overtly dark. I'd like a DreamWorks vibe from sonic stories, like Kung Fu Panda where they're able to tackle things like Genocide and PTSD while still being fun family content.
That's probably one of the best ways we could describe it.
I think the word you might be looking for is "nobledark".
Shadow, 06, and maybe Forces are a testament to this.

Sonic stories are serious, the problem is the writing is trash when it comes to the games.
This lore is extremely interesting and it’s becoming more and more intense throughout each issue

The more sinister and twisted Eggman is definitely something I've wanted back. I love the cartoony and bumbling villain too, but this reminds me of a time the character was much more intimidating

Jack Lawrence's art on this issue was amazing! Incredibly expressive, energetic, and fluid. He's a fantastic British artist and a really nice guy at that. I'd highly recommend his self-published Tinpot Hobo, which has four issues but sadly I don't think ever concluded. I'm guessing the recap was an editorial mandate. New arc, new readers, bring them up to speed. Oh, and upsell the other books while you're at it. I will say, the Metal Virus coinciding with real-world covid-19 was unfortunate. So much for happy escapism. (Not the book's fault.)
Yeah for sure, just some unfortunate realities, both in real world pandemics and comic book editorial. I will absolutely be checking out Lawrence's other stuff though, thanks for the tip!

I love this Arc so much. This Metal Virus Arc really show that Ian Flynn know the Balance of Fun, Comedic Story with Dark Undertones. And no it not because I'm into Dark Stuff it just makes the World More Serious and makes me want to Protect it more.
Sonic Adventure had the Fun Adventure of Stopping Eggman from Getting the Chaos Emeralds for Chaos. But then we Learned Chaos is the Reason Knuckles clan is Extinct and Chaos Completely Flooded Station Square.
Sonic Adventure 2 Is the Fun Story of Sonic Stopping his Faker and Clearing His Name. But we Learn a lot of people Died on the Arc 50 years Ago and a Little Girl Died oh And the entire Planet was About to be Destroyed
I could keep going as a Lot of Sonic Games Before Colors had some Dark Story Underneath it. And I love it .
The fact that the Metal Virus Ark came out in 2020 makes it so much better in a way.

The arc genuinely got super tense in my eyes , I honestly can't imagine what it would've been like in the Archie universe.
Nick, you're one of the greatest UA-camrs I've ever had the luck of accidentally running into. The way you talk about Sonic, it properly propelled me into my pilgrimage for my nostalgia days, especially Sonic. The AoStH, Sonic X, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic the Comic (of which we only had 2 small compilations of 5 episodes in portuguese) and even the Sonic 3D board game! I unlocked all of that from the depths of my memory! Not to mention, it's awesome to see you talk about all the cool things that everything has, the good in the bad, and the great in the good, the nuances in old material and plots, and not just Sonic but everything else too! Keep up the spectacular work, man!

I grew up with Sonic. Played most of the originals, was excited when the Adventure titles came out and played through multiple times, I dabbled in the GBA games and I sat out the majority of modern titles with the exceptions of Heroes, Mania and racing transformed. Hell, I ONLY grabbed Forces because of your videos(Yeah, it's every bit the mess you warned it was but I'm still having a ton of fun with it) yet, I've never even looked at a panel of the comics before. Your Speed Read series has totally blown my mind about the places these characters and stories can go and this episode ended with me literally having a sinking feeling of dread in my gut for what lies ahead. Good stuff, dude.

At 6:15 you reminded me of the phrase ”A single flood spore could take out a whole world” (not 100% exact but something like that) from Halo 3
Just make sure you don't stall yourself trying to make "next level content" to make up for a perceived slowness of output. It can lead to a death spiral where you feel the need to make something better and better because you keep failing to put out content and you need to "make up for it." I've seen and experienced this spiral before, and the best thing to do is what you just did here: Put stuff out anyway, even if it's shorter and not quite what you were envisioning as a way to make up for perceived lack of output.
And if we're being honest here, the stuff you put up is high quality regardless. Your baseline is just that good.

The extreme length of the recap is a cost saving measure, IDW has been hemorrhaging money for years. I'll have to double check the dates but I believe it's been 5 or 6 years since they last reported making a profit in their annual fiscal earning reports, and I'm honestly baffled with how they managed to obtain the Sonic license.

Honestly, Eggman going after Windmill Village first is actually a merciful act as it would spare them from the horrors of the rest of the Metal Virus pandemic. They wouldn't have to slowly lose their family & friends as more and more of them turn into empty shells of themselves, and then attack the people they love, only to witness the body horror of the zombots regenerating themselves.
To quote Chopper in the most recent One Piece chapter:
"YOU DON'T MESS WITH VIRUSES! They will always get out of your control!"
I just moved recently too. It's such a pain! Feels like we're never gonna finish unpacking.

This is such a deep and dark story the kind I love and it's portraying Sonic the way he should always have been.
Even if its just harmless 'touching people' to keep it for kids, that's also what makes it so dangerous and wild! Just one brush against a Zombot is enough to end you. Becoming a part of the unrelenting flood.

This metal virus saga sounds like some weird Carmageddon consored story. Also, I hope sonic will have better future in future games and
comics.

I agree with you, they should've done something else, like maybe have the zombots puke the virus out of their mouths like it's infected blood, and that's how they're spreading it, instead of just touching.
OR, grabby arms can be very creppy themselves, but the way they're grabbing people looks very harmless. It should look like they're trying to rip the people apart.

Jesus Christ they really made eggman quite the madman to not only making the virus but make the starting point the place that took him in and it's terrifying that all sonic can do is keep the virus at Bay I feel like the smallest mistake or rest could make him turn it's nerve-racking

were pretty much under the metal virus situation ... except ...this one is KILLING us and very quickly adapting and getting stronger as it evolves so please... everyone... treat this situation as the metal virus and avoid large over 4 to 5 people groups lest you become infected yourself, meanwhile im doing like sonic and running to stay fit and healthy.

I feel like the Metal virus gives the perfect opportunity to introduce Bunnie to IDW at least. Forces was already a great way to introduce the Freedom Fighters, but now we have a version of roboticization that can easily explain Bunnie.

4:12 I think a better method of infection should have been them biting them like vampires to transmit the virus into their bloodstream.
Personal opinion: If Sonic were as powerful as his game counterpart, if Tails was an inventor and capable as his game counterpart, if Amy were present (with her Piko Piko Hammer), and if Knuckles existed, then they would've made short work of SATAM Robotnik within a full game playthrough.
As an old schooler SatAM fan, I have gotten the vibe over the years that Flynn seems to have some appreciation for SatAM Robotnik. On the one hand, I often got frustrated with the feeling that too many of his stories revolved around Sonic and pals just overpowering and fighting whatever threat they faced in the comics, but given the power creep in the video games I realize he basically had to work around that. On the other, it does give him the chance to let his take on Eggman feel more Robotnik-esque, because otherwise he turns into game Eggman who really doesn't pose *that* much of a threat and acts more as a buffoon.
So, seeing him bring back a version of roboticization is a nice callback; just wish we could've had SatAM Robotnik around longer, because to this day Jim Cummings is still the voice I always associate with the character any time he's being downright evil...and yes, his voice any time he's being goofy of buffoonish should always sound like Long John Baldry, damnit.

Well for how long he can keep running, i know its a different "universe" but for the sonic x its been implied/shown that he can keep going without too much trouble for at least a day straight with no pause.

I think it doesn't take the citizen over completely, because of willpower. Think of the characters shown to be taken over completely, and then looing control, compared to the average Joe
