We got 5 bushels locally to last us into the winter too. I’ve had great luck with Granny Smith apples lasting for us. We’ve always finished them before they get soft! When I bought them this year I got talking to the owner and he said that he loved pink lady apples for storage. He said they’re like two apples in one. Tart to start and by February they become sweet apples. He said they last a year for him!

We had gravenstein apples from our trees. Mom would make apple pie filling, put it in zipper bags and then freeze them in a pie dish. All she had to do was make the crusts and then put the frozen filling in the crust and bake!

Vinegar making is the easiest process in the kitchen! I am using all the rather damaged fruit I have in the garden. Put them In a barel. Even in a period of weeks. Only if the weather is colder I add some sugar. After a time, few weeks, I just take the juice in bottels, let them to continue the process. Now and then I look at them if they clear. In the mean time I am using the previous years Vinegar. If I have small quantities like berries, I am using small bottels and add some more sugar. The process speads up and the Summer salads are have a great taste.

I’m curious to know what the arsenic levels are in this. The apple seeds themselves contain a good amount of arsenic. We typically avoid this in our diet because seeds aren’t used in apple sauce, apple butter, apple juice, etc. just something to think about. There’s no argument as to the benefits but it might be healthier to pop those seeds out first.

    • @threerivershomestead

I remember it was out there the other day, its not frozen but wondered about whether the mother will be ok. Thanks so much

They make the best jelly!! They are naturally very high in pectin, so you can also boil them down to make homemade pectin you use in other fruit jams and jellies.
They also feed our bees and cross-pollinate with the apple trees, so we like having them around.

You mentioned that you don't have dairy, and I think you mentioned something about gluten in a different video. I'd love to know more about your family's food allergies/intolerances. I am newly dairy and egg free, but cooking for my large family that isn't.

She mentioned in a previous video that her oldest son has both dairy and peanut allergies. She struggled with Crohn’s disease earlier in life, but has learned to control it by eating the right foods. There could be more, but I am a fairly new subscriber, so I am not fully up on the whole family.
