    Great video, very detailed. You really helped me install a heater in my garage after watching your video. Once I figured out how to cut the power to the garage, I was good to go.....Thanks for sharing your expertise.

    this is a pretty good video and i appreciate this gentleman's videos and his other video detailing heater cost comparison ......as a "complete install & wiring tutorial" instructional video though.... i do feel like it should be pointed out that heaters of this size and larger typically recommend/require a direct cable runs and probably should not have interconnects and especially no wire nut connections in the main electrical path. this is the case in the electric heater I have installed & manuals i have read. (see DuraHeat Model # EWH9615, for example)

    Wow! Thanks so much for the video! Very informative. I just Wired in my exact same heater as the one in the video however my fan speed kicks on but is incredibly slow…any idea why that maybe? I can feel the heat but the fan won’t go fast enough to push it out

    I think you should twist the wires together before installing the wire nuts.

    Thanks . I m in Toronto ( same weather as you . Will 5000 w work for 200sq ft garage (insulated ) 8’ high . I’m getting someone to do it. Instead of paying them to hard wire one in , I’m thinking of them just installing a receptacle which would be very close to my panel , then getting a contractor type 5000w heater that comes with a plug .( not as nice as yours - but wonder it it will do the job?

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  Рік тому

      Yes it will do the job, my shop is just a little under 200 sq ft. The heater i have can be set at 3000, 4000 or 5000 watts. I use it on 4000 and it still keeps it nice and warm. Thanks for watching. Mine is a comfort zone heater I got it off of amazon.

    I noticed you are using a 5k watt heater in a 300sq ft space. My garage is 15x20 which is roughly the same. What brand heater are you using? And how has it held up. Thanks for the video!

    Is there a reason you used the whip and junction box instead of just running the romex directly to the heater?

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  2 роки тому +1

      The main reason I used the whip was to have protection over the wire. I could have run the wire straight down and code compliant. Thanks for watching.

      @@detroitdiy Thanks for the reply! I'm installing a 7500 watt unit next week using 6/2 and a 50 amp breaker in case I decide to go 1000 watt in the future. My plan at this point is to run the 6/2 straight to the unit but most installs I see have a whip or conduit so I was just making sure that wire protection was the only reason.

      @@mikeschneider3268 Not an electrician, but you also might need to consider heat rating. NMB "romex" is only rated for 60 degrees C use. Many heaters will specify you need to use a conductor rated for 75 Degrees C or higher.

    How did you know you had enough amps to run the 220? I want to add one to my shop but I already have a 220/30amp on a 100 amp service to run the well pump. Not much else on the service but a few lights and a few outlets. Your thoughts?

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  Рік тому

      I have a 50 amp service in my garage, it only runs lights and some outlets. Easy for me, however I did make sure I knew what the heater was drawing before buying it. With you having a 100 amp service I don't see a problem with the heater. It is not going to leave you alot. Most shop tools would be fine saws and so on. An air compressor of size might overload but otherwise I believe you would be fine.

    Why did you use a junction box and not just straight to the panel from the heater???

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  Рік тому

      Because I wanted to use a covered wire to the heater but yet still flexible. So I opted to use the flexible whip. It is not necessary and it could be a continuous run. I more wanted the extra protection for the wire. Thanks for watching.

    Great video and the instruction is very detailed. i need help for doing it a different way. right now i have dryer plug in the garage and just bought a 5000w heater. my current heater is a construction heater at 4800w. would it work if i cut the plug wiring off and wire it to the new 5000w using a dryer plug outlet?

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  Рік тому +1

      If the wiring is the same any correctly rated 220 plug that is compatible will work. Most 220 plug types are sold as whips in different lengths that would be the best option for using that plug. Making the only wiring connections in the heater itself.

    I purchased one and doesn’t throw a whole lot of heat. How does yours work?

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  2 роки тому

      Mine seems to throw plenty of heat, runs for only 2.5 minutes when it turns on. It turns on about every 20 minutes. I have it set low and the space is about 60 degrees. I have not yet tried to warm the room above that. A 5000 watt heater can warm a room up to 400 square feet, is your space larger than that? I have also read that some people have removed the thermostat from inside the heater and let it hang by the wires outside the heater to get longer run cycles. Not sure how that may affect the overheat sensors in the heater. So far in all I am pretty happy with it. My space is 300 square feet. Thanks for watching.

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  2 роки тому

      If it's wired 240 then no not really any chance of doing it wrong. If it has a switch to change wattage maybe something is wrong there. Only one heating element is turning on. I would say you got a dud.

    Did you ground out the junction box with a short pig tail to the two ground wires. If not you would have a illegal connectio, and dangerous

    • @detroitdiy
      @detroitdiy  2 роки тому

      The switch I installed does not require a ground pig tail to the box it is designed to occur through the switch body. Most new switches are made that way now. They can be identified by a thin piece of wire holding one of the mounting screws instead of the little plastic square.

  • @smoguli
    @smoguli 11 місяців тому

    Your junction box is not grounded... you should have connected the 2 green wires directly to the junction box instead of twisting them together.
