Tulsi, another name for holy basil, is highly regarded in Ayurvedic medicine. It’s suspected that holy basil is native to tropical Asia, although it now grows in many tropical climates across the globe. Most countries classify Holy Basil as an adaptogen herb, or anti-stress agent.
In this episode of Ancient Medicine Today, I talk about the powerful benefits of this herb. Watch to learn more.

Wrong basil in the photo. The photo is Genovese basil (what you use for pesto). There are several types of basil including lemon. Tulsi or “holy” basil is slightly different in growth, size of leaves are smaller. Flavor is delicious mixed with green tea. There is also a Krishna basil which I am growing first time this year. This Krishna also grows different. I’m looking forward to its unique flavor and how it works with my body.

You forgot to say the most important thing and I learned this at the Royal Marsden hospital in the UK on a course for clinical aromatherapists. Holy basil blocks substance p and blocks pain. Find it really strange this wasn’t within the list as there is so much info showing the benefits and it works really well with end of life patients I have worked with. Think this is more important and you didn’t even have it on the list 😮

Greetings from Bangalore, India. Tulsi or Holy Basil is grown in almost every home in South India. You have explained this herb and it's medicinal benefits with such clarity, thank you Dr.
I also read that Tulsi emits O3 molecules instead of O2 like all other plants. Is it true?
In any case I too grow Tulsi in my little garden. It is excellent repellant of small pesky insects and mosquitoes. I drink Tulsi tea often, boiled with lemon grass. I do not suffer from anxiety but do have a history of hypothyroidism. I didn't know Tulsi can help in this case.

      Hello there.
I don't know if I am benefitting from Tulasi regarding my hypothyroidism. I am on allopathic medication for last few years. In the last 2 years it seems to have normalized a little. The reason attributed to I that I had a severe attack of covid 2 years ago and was on ventilator. When that difficult phase was over many changes have been noted in my physical health. One is that thyroid levels are near normal. I am told that post covid changes in pituitary gland functioning has been recorded. This may be temporary or permanent as enough data is not yet available to conclude. This also helped me lose quite a bit if my excess weight.
In the last 2 - 3 months though, I am feeling heavy and have gained a couple of kilos. I am due thyroid test next week and will know what is happening in that area.
As regards taking tulasi for thyroid it needs to be taken in combination with ashwagansha. I am 64 years old woman and the Ayurvedic doctors here advice that at my age I shouldn't take ashwagandha as it is a strong aphrodisiac.
I do take tulasi tea often with a little lemon juice as I find it refreshing. Sometimes we make a decoction of tulasi and pepper for cough.
Also I never combine allopathic meds with Ayurvedic meds unless I formally consult a doctor. Ayurvedic medicine tend to be very potent.
      Hope this helps.

Perfect timing Dr. Axe. I just came home from my Hashimotos endocrinologist and I mentioned to him I feel so anxious inside, thought maybe it was due to Synthroid. Anyway, are their any bad side effects we should look out for, or can the holy basil adversely interact with Synthroid? As always, I learn so much from your videos. Thank you for sharing!!

    The shyam tulsi tea
I am boiling the stems with the leaves
As shyama tulsi is green majenda colour
When i got my menstrual cycle
I obseved that my menstrual cycle blood was red to majenda colour
I daily boil upto100 leaves with stems
The stems are purpulish majenda in colour
What's your opinion or advice to me
    Doctor pls reply

100 tulsi leaves might be too much. Tulsi has Hotter properties. So, 100 leaves a day may create other issues in the body due to it's hotter prakriti.
Anything in excess can harm. Find the equilibrium.

I have an important question. Can you take holy basil tea if you already have low blood pressure? I drank ginseng tea before and it made me have almost no energy. I think it was the panax. I already have low blood pressure and it lowered it to a dangerous point. Since holy basil is an adaptogen, do I have to worry about it lowering my already low blood pressure? Thanks in advance.

Good question I too suffer from bouts of low blood pressure. Holy basil is one of the few herbs that helps to raise BP. As you know most other herbs lower BP. I have a BP wrist monitor and I do not take Tulsi unless my BP is low. On a side note if I happen to have high BP I take horny goat weed. One of the main uses in TCM is to lower BP. Hope this helps...
