I got a cannon alpha hybrid version and I am towing 2.5t trailer boat. Comparing to towing with a 2.0T older GWM cannon, the acceleration is much better and the control is much much better. Like you said the fuel consumption is much higher (on my old GWM cannon it was 15L/100km) I haven't test long distance towing with new alpha hybrid. I will be testing it next month. Another thing I found is that the rear camera on cannon alpha cannot see the tow ball anymore. I got a short video of GWM alpha towing 2.5t boat. Will do more test
This ute won Bakkie(UTE/pickup) of the year 2024 in South Africa. Literally less than 3 months after it was launched in South Africa 🇿🇦 😅... What a mighty machine...I wonder how a turbo diesel v6 might pair up for to the tank 500 and Canon alpha?
Up in God's Country ah Port Macquarie bloody top spot I've got the Alpha ultra diesel definitely a upgrade from the cannon X bro I hope you had a good run home
awesome video of towing and so honest .was always convinced the diesel is the way to go for towing ,have towed and drivin trucks for years .But there is the hybrid guys convinced there great but yes fuel consumption it real not matter what you drive .thanks byron for the update ,now got to decide do i wait for the kia tasman and the new foton V7 & V9 to arrive the diesel hydrid would be really interesting . thanks once again .if i order the alpha ill be intouch as there will be some upgrades ill be after .thanks once again .
@SavageTechAustralia For the Canon Alpha diesel... How much power on a tune can you get out of that 2.4 motor that's reliable for long hauls... Probably towing just under 3000kilos
Any turbo engine particularly a 4 cylinder should be using 98 and given you are towing on maximum load, even more reason to use 98. Surprised it hasn't blown up under all that pressure. Poor knock sensors.
This car is tuned specifically for 91 octane fuel. Using 98 octane in this case wouldn’t provide any additional benefit, as the ECU isn’t mapped to take advantage of the higher-octane rating. Proper tuning is key, and the knock sensors are functioning as intended.
@Mike_221 The compression ratio is just one factor in determining the required octane fuel. While a 12:1 ratio may suggest the need for higher-octane fuel, the Tank 500's engine is designed and tuned to run optimally on 91 RON as specified by the manufacturer. Modern turbocharged engines like this have advanced knock sensors and timing controls, which adapt to prevent knocking and ensure safe operation with lower-octane fuel. Using 98 RON in an engine tuned for 91 won’t provide added benefits unless the engine is specifically tuned for it. In summary, the compression ratio alone doesn’t dictate the fuel requirement-it's about how the engine is designed and tuned. Following the manufacturer’s recommendation ensures the best performance and reliability.

FYI: NSW - The maximum speed is 100 km/h for tow vehicles and caravans with a combined weight of more than 4,500 kg
@@menotdeadyet good to know
Great episode, have been waiting for ages for such a review . Thank you
Have they fixed the gearbox issue in the cannon alpha?

Looking forward to the towing test with the PHEV versions. Expect the worst, but let’s see!
Can't wait we will be testing the shark first👍

What size tyres are you running on the tank 500? 305/70R17?
@@NashvilleAustralia these are 295/70/17 but we have 5 different sets we run on it.

Alpha all day I have had my cannon for 4 years
We average around 21 lt towing a 21 foot van in our tank 500
I just wished they bought out the v6 twin turbo to Australia

@SavageTechAustralia what about an after market turbo diesel upgrade (engine replacement) for a Tank 500 🙂 ... maybe called it the Franken500..

@SavageTechAustralia it has a 12:1 compression ratio you would be an idiot not to put 98 Ron in it.
