15 months with the Cannon X and 15k on the clock. It’s done the Flinders Rangers on L8-L9 tracks, towed a 2.5t caravan and is a city commuter. No issues with rusting or quality. Unlike previous GWM vehicles, this Ute has reputable parts from ZF, Borg Warner and Bosch. I don’t think anyone will say it’s a Ranger or Hilux but to be honest, who pushes their vehicles to that extreme. With 3t towing, 300kg ball weight, 1050kg in the tray, the only Ute to have a tailgate step, 7yr warranty and for $41k it’s fantastic.
@@sofascialistadankulamegado1781 I’m sorry about your sight issues, are you partially or fully blind? Yes, the same place that kept Australia afloat by purchasing whatever is dig out of the ground. For your info, GWM is a private company I’m not owned by the Chinese government like LDV is.
Have loved the GWM from the day it was released, Yeah it is not a full on off roader but neither is most consumers, Sold my Pimped up Prado as I am not hard core and have ordered a GWM Canon L, Should have done it from the start.. Great value at the price and who cares about resale, Why sell it, All Diesel/Petrol vehicles will be worth nothing in 5-10 years anyway...Thanks for the great realistic review...
I reckon it is a full off roader, unless you have $200k and want to match what these youtube nut bags get up to down under, these utes fit the requirements of 99% of the population
My Cannon-X is on dirt roads hauling a trailer every week. No problems at all and 400NM/120kW is enough in isolation (Hilux had less power up to 5 "minutes" ago) Lane assist is rubbish but when I hit the freeways near the city is works OK. For the money can't fault it.
Just did 102000 in my first Cannon just purchased my second one. Value, economy, comfort and style. I work in central qld and have had no issues on or off road.
DONT FORGET........GWM cannon is the first Generation of this ute. Versus the 8th Generation of the Hilux and 3rd generation of the Isuzu. also the comment about climbing a hill the cannon couldn't do because seeing over the bonnet the 360 camera on the cannon can be turned on when climbing such hills.. After market Suspension upgrades incl 2 inch lift's our also available now.......... Cheers
You're wrong mate, everything in the Cannon is proven. The Cannon is a newer version if the Steed. Do your diligence and learn the facts before you start spreading wrong facts.
@@chriswording8638 May I ask where you got the information saying that its just a newer version of the steed? The whole thing is redesigned. I think your the one spreading false info
@Chris Wording sorry Chris you are wrong .. the Cannon is a completely different vehicle than the steed also the name Great Wall Motors was also dropped that's why it's called GWM.. they wanted to not be connected to the Steed .. and again it's a brand new design.. in fact under the dash it has lots of Haval components.. people just get upset for even in this test that was done.. the GWM cannon was still there at the end and the difference in price to the others just can't handle.. drive one and you will buy one...
@@brianward2313 the Steed 6 was (is) the previous model of the Ute and still selling off existing stock around the world. The Cannon is simply a newer iteration of it under a new model name for AU/NZ. New as any new Ranger or Hilux I suppose. GWM is still Great Wall Motor (GWM), not a new brand or rebranding anything. The only difference is, that GWM now is actually sold directly through the factory (giving a lifeline to dozens of Holden dealers and staff) and not a third party importer.
@@777_callum lol. It is still an evolution of the Steed mate (previous model - current model). Facts are that GWM making Utes for over 30 years and they have manufactured over 10 million engines. So nothing NEW to GWM...
The biggest joke is that people go out and buy them!! That’s why they price them that high!! Idiots keep buying them!! Having said that I put an order in for an X terrain Dmax
Idiots and fools are becoming more abundant. Instead of getting upset about it though, take advantage of people stupidity and capitalise on it. Sell them crap wrapped in shininess and you'll be rich in no time. 👍
Built to sell not built to last. We live in a disposable society. Everything is a throw away! Me living in the sates I will tell you most trucks/ utes are well in the 50k usd some topping at over 100k for a damn truck!. We have some low end ones like the ford maverick but ford has loads or recalls on them. Chevy makes the Colorado and it’s a piece of 💩. Chrysler hasn’t made the dodge Dakota in years. We don’t have Chinese cars in our market because we still don’t trust their cars but that could change.
Interesting review. I'm in the market again for a new ute and I'm seriously considering the GWM. I had from new an RX NP300 for 5 years and did 500k. The reason I bought the RX single turbo was because I couldn't hack the delay when accelerating. The RX had no delay and felt like a petrol off the line so I installed the wheels, chrome bars on the rear and nudge bar. The point being, this model produced 120Kw of power with 400Nm of torque. Never was an issue and I suspect same with GWM. I used to tow cars on trailer just over 2 tonne. No issues. Only complaint was that despite the average fuel of under 8 litres per 100, when it towed it really sucked the diesel. Was very poor on the economy under towing conditions. But other than that, it had plenty of power for me so I suspect the GWM is just fine. If you're a V6 diesel punter then you'll never be satisfied with the GWM. But from what I'm reading, the GWM is hard to pass up if you have a limited budget.
I know they are Ute's but let's be honest, most will never see a dirt road like this. And so if you are one of those people that want a ute for the look then the saving on a GWM makes a lot of sense.
Apart from the front end being a bit soft it went okay - just slow down a bit for the washouts - frankly if I spent $70k on a vehicle I would be slowing down anyway.
I have a Cannon x and love it. Yes there are little quirks for a 1st Generation. Better suspension a slightly higher ground clearance. Better user interface and yes how about a interior light for the rear passengers. It can only get better with time. GWM are on the move as is LDV.
I can't wait for the second version - hopefully it addresses most of the shortcomings such as the rear interior light, software quirks, button to kill lane keep assist, 4H button (Cross Country Expert Mode), and more tub eyelets.
@@HermanWillems The Hilux is so expensive new that you lose more money relative to the resale value so no Hilux is not cheaper in total ownership cost any way you look at it.
In South Africa the D23 Navara equipped with the 140kw 450Nm YD25 was smoked by GWM in a 0-100. but as mentioned in the video at high speed, peak power speaks.
Thanks Ponch! Another great, and as always, honest review. Having driven a GWM I reckon I could live with the power deficit (it's just not that obvious in isolation) and a quick trip to Pedders should sort out that front end. Keep up the amazing work!
@@samueloluyinkaojomu6548 I think it would do it easily and in great comfort. It wasn't that long ago that utes came with 115kw, 380nm, a five speed gearbox and 3,000kg towing capacity and they were used night and day for all sorts of heavy duty work including towing. The GWM has a clever 8 speed gearbox, permanent all wheel drive and a perfectly adequate motor. Get yourself an Ultimate 9 throttle controller and you'll be a very happy chappie!
I have a '13 x200 w 5 speed auto, probably the same origin engine, the a 1t boat & trailer fine with it. Like he said the trans jumps into hi gears too early so often drive it in manual mode. With a heavier boot it might act better but not w these diesel prices. Economy is good w 8.5 - 9 on highway, 12 with the boat. Ill put a decent trans cooler w fan on mine as no low range so torque conveter will work when crawling around. Lots of electronics, and it will go to limp mode/ electronically accelerate. Disconnectedly in gear due to small things like water in fuel sensor. Toyota's won't stop for this, the newer GW may be more durable. Rev it, drop into gear & once rolling it will drive. Al in all got good bones, some drawbacks & quirks but cheap
Please do a similar comparison with the musso! Its good to see someone finally considering the cheaper utes in a comparison test. I would love to see a comparison of the base spec dual cab from every manufacturer. How does a $34k ute stack up against a base model hilux or ranger or triton?
All that time and distance and you missed a few things TBH. The Hilux air box is notorious for letting dust in did anyone bother to check, did we look at the other two? Alternators have been gradually sinking in engine bays which has implications for water crossings and driving in muddy conditions how do these compare? How easy is to to change a fuel filter and reset the light should you get a bad lot of fuel or for that matter bleed up the system should you run it dry? What are the stock tyre sizes, profiles and availability of off road tyres in these sizes i.e. wander into the tyre shop at somewhere broken hill and see what they carry in stock. Having run a few vehicles in mineral exploration these are some of the areas a modern 4wd tend to fall over in.
Exactly, this is the type of reviews we need! I don’t care about lane keep assist it’s bad on most cars so turn it off we get it, it’s annoying, blame ancap ratings and move on. One thing I noticed was the huge dusting inside on dash etc. were windows open when it happened or is it the seals? The Dmax looked the worst?
Good too see you guys doing the classic Aussie Outback test. These big outback drives have been missing for a while, could love to see you take an EV or any other new car on Broken Hill and back adventure.
Prices are crazy! In Ecuador 🇪🇨 the Hiliux it’s at $50k usd ! We just got an gwm poer and against all odds it surprise me! Give you the worst interior *cheap hard plastic *cheap third party display * cheap backup camera* out dated inteior in general ! The full version 4x2 its at $30k usd . Totally worth the 20k less , the litmus test is the engine long term performance.
so what you saying is put some good suspension on the GWM turn off the lane assist and your good to go. did you mention the GWM has better warranty. if the hilux ans dmax are so great why cant they warrant their cars for 7 years
Love reading the comments that people won't buy the gwm because it financially supports china, but it supports Australians too, the dealers, the servicing, parts departments, tyre shops etc . Look into Toyota and you'll see they heavily support china too. GAC Toyota is a joint venture with the Chinese government
How fascinating that us nowadays are so obsessed with numbers peak power and torque etc etc. so the 2015- 2018 or even early hilux(apart from SR5 which is ?top model) have 360NM, but I think there are tons of people still drive them around the town, and still tow up to 3.2tons(hilux legal limit for that model), if you think 363NM is lower than 400NM, I’m just wondering how people drive a 2015-2018 mid range hilux feel? Slow or lack of power on towing?
@@fakejake8965I think he's talking about the GWM. Next door neighbours mixed use city & farm Hilux has 780k on it & no rust or dramas aside regular factory servicing.
On the gwm you can simply turn the aircon on and off with the knobs and buttons on the centre console. You also have the option of going through the screen interface, but I think I did that once and completely disregarded it. I've also turned the lane keep assist down to the point that its quite reasonable to use now. Springs and shocks to be upgraded soon.
You're spot on with that lane keeping assist. Have a BMW X5 and that's also rubbish. Keeps tugging the steering left and right. Honestly how often do you drive in the middle of the road especially in inner suburbs. Wish they put that money into a crash cam instead
I bought a Cannon X. I put a 2" lift in it from Fulcrum Suspension and it handles way better. It only cost $1500 all up. I turn off lane assist when off road but don't mind it on bitumen. I pull a 2 tonne Jayco with it and am very happy with the power from this car.
Thanks. Great review. I probably wouldn't drive like you guys while on dirt, so the suspension is not such an issue, although better shocks may improve it somewhat. I'm most interested in towing a small van. I would never consider a new Hilux or D max. Way too expensive. The GWM is very appealing and I'm guessing that being driven carefully and steady by an old fart such as myself, it may just be perfect for my needs.
"you get what you pay for" by the looks of it the D-Max and Hilux have better Quality Control. especially with torque in the Hilux or the D-Max it will tow a small van up a hill better than the GWM. and the dmax and the hilux are known for reliability too from their past.
@@lethenparkesTeamRacc that is an important point. I don’t know that the GWM is going to not last as well as the other 2 but I don’t know that it will. So, there is a risk element of the unknown with buying the GWM. Of nothing else the resale will certainly reflect this.
The review overall went exactly how I expected, but some of the complaints, particularly about the DMax and GWM, was seriously nitpicking, especially regarding the tech. Not everyone wants toyota spec (see: none) interior. I offroad in a vehicle with all the tech in the world and it has never been an issue for me
To me kinda felt like a typical Toyota/Hilux fan boy review. The hilux is good but its far from faultless and incredibly overpriced because of the hype
Yeah, I thought that was a bit weird. I love all the tech in my Cannon X. When off-road it's not distracting at all. Can still use the stereo volume and air conditioner controls without touching the screen.
Wait for series update in GWM. There are a few engines in their line up (H9 twin turbo180kw/350nm) or (H6 1.5 hybrid 179kw/ 530nm) that will come later. Re do the stupid info stuff, and you have a keeper. Patients, lads. GWM is just getting started!!
I've now watched several reviewers give their opinion on the GWM Cannon and it's obvious that none of them have read the owners manual. I've owned my GWM Cannon X for 65,000ks of trouble free driving in all sorts of conditions. To get the most out of it you need to understand how the engine, gearbox and drivetrain can be set for the conditions you drive in. Steering response, traction control, engine power / response, diff engagement etc. etc. are all highly customizable and can transform the performance for whatever conditions you my encounter. So read the owners manual before you review it. The GWM is a very smart vehicle. Not so sure about the reviewers who don't seem to know these features exist in the Cannon.
A good thorough review in true Aussie conditions. I have always thought that premium cloth is better than cheap leather. That sums up the Hilux vs GWM IMO. The dMax has early it’s stripes. It’s just down to personal preference and how much money you have to spend and what you are using it for.
True Aussie conditions????? I reckon less than 1 percent of drivers have ever driven on a dirt road - and not like those guys were! I would save the cash, drive a bit slower and enjoy the 7 year warranty.
I love my 2023 GWM Cannon -L. Bought it new as I used to work for a 4x4 accessories company and drove all types of 4x4's. I love the fact that I spent so much less than the other utes and got the best cabin of all of them. Its got more power than my 2020 Pajero sport had. It suits my needs perfectly and cannot fault it. Sure there are some annoying things like lane keep assist (turned off mostly) and heated seats cant be left on. But almost done 30,000 k's and all good. Except had to change the radio as it was a lemon. All under my 7 year unlimited warranty. Keeping this car for 6 years and then selling it with 1 year of new can warranty...maybe.
The new vehicle tests are nice, but not a real world comparison. Get the 3 vehicles 3 years down the road with all having done the same milage in the same type of environment, being used as a ute then test them against each other then. Toyota and Isuzu have been around for years and they have been developing their products for years. I'd take the Japanese contenders over the Chinese one until they prove themselves. I live in South Africa and if you talk utes here the Luxie is the benchmark. I agree that Toyota is too expensive for what you get but the market determines the price.
@@tonywei423 they only kinda follow some Ford design themes here and there but together with Haval (and Tank) they've been doing very much their own thing, except they keep doing things the Japanese way. The little info available suggest they work similar to Toyota or Honda when it comes to part availability, assembly line QC stoppages, thorough deterioration simulation, etc. but with a military-style twist. Some Spanish outlet quite sometime ago reported early morning exercising, drills and marching in obsessively clean assembly lines.
I prefer a vehicle that can last for 10 years or more. (Taking into account normal wear & tear component maintenance to be carried out of course.) It would be interesting to see how well assembled & the quality parts / components the GWM has under the paint job after 6 years or 200 000km as an example. The Isuzu & Toyota have been around for decades for a very good reason, even though they are going at a steep price bracket lately. Toyota d4D 3.0D still our favourite off road / all rounder on the market, simplicity, efficiency & reliability. Thanks for the great video chaps.
I have a 10 year old Mitsubishi Challenger and I've recently had to take it to panel beaters for rust repairs on the roof and under bumpers at the front end. Going mainstream Japanese is not always a guarantee you won't ever get problems, you just pay more. If you have saved a good 20k from the start and put that into your mortgage, at a modest 5% interest compounded over 10 years, that sum equates to $32.5k. So even if you get problems in 10 years time, I reckon you'll still be much better off.
I bought a '13 GW x200 auto 1 yr ago w 170k for $5k, 190k on it now. Mech fine & reliable tows fine, trans races to high gears, leggy throttle / turbo, some minor elec issues, lack of support is a bit of an issue but ok. Obviously resale is low but alot of car for the price.
The x200 was a Mitsubishi clone diesel w borg warner drivetrain, both reliable. I think new ones are based on same motor family, not sure about drivetrain. Look for 4L if u can get it
Let’s face the facts. Not everyone can afford a $70,000 car. I have friends who’ve got the GWM and they love it. Firstly, they saved $20,000 - $25,000 and for what they use it for, bit off dirt road, beach, etc, it does the job. You could use that $20,000 saving to get a dyno tune to increase the power, upgrade the suspension and you’d have a duel cab that would possibly be on par with the Hilux in terms of its power and handling. And still have change from the $20,000!
And just think, 15 years ago, Kia and Hyundai were little known sardine tins. Now they are 2 of the more popular brands out there. The Chinese will get there in time. Most of the Japanese cars have parts made in China. Most everything in your house is made there in some form! Only a matter of time before they become a real competitor
@@danielbredenkamp3957 and that's where you're very wrong. If 20k savings was put into your mortgage at 5% compound interest, you have saved 40k in 10 years, or 66k in 20 years. That's a round the world trip or retiring early, I know which I would choose!
What fiddly systems for the air conditioning? You turn the left knob to lower the temperature and the right knob to raise the fan speed. There is a mode button to switch vents but do you need to change that all the time? Also, would you go driving in the outback without applying proper window tinting to help repel the heat? Lane Keep Assist is annoying and I wish there was a single button to disable it (especially when towing!). It's a shame reviewers aren't briefed on 4H which is called Cross Country Expert mode. It's not even in the manual but owners discover it via FB groups and love it!
Precisely, I was about to say the same. AC access is immediate, no menu to go through, you have button access. Takes two seconds to adjust anything. Lane keep assist only works if the car can clearly detect the two white lines (boundaries) of the road, which is hardly present on dirt roads. Which means it isn't active. When you go off-road, you adjust your tyre pressure and slow down. Looking at the video, hitting corrugations at 100 kmh with probably tyres set to 34 psi, of course the front will bounce around and eventually you'll cause damage to any car. You need to set the tyre pressure to 32 front and 30 psi rear when empty. Lastly I wish people would test cars if they owned it, not with the rental car mentality (we trash it, who cares, it isn't ours). I certainly don't drive my Cannon (nor any other car like a Hoon) and drive it to conditions, not like pedal to the metal.
@@chriswording8638 Agreed! Plus it's shod with highway tyres so perhaps change them too. Only issue with HVAC for me is that it's inoperable if indicators or reverse is engaged. Weird!
@@hambo76 yeah, little quirks and annoyances that need ironing out with a software update. But no car is perfect these days, just look on other Ute brand pages. Indeed, the Cannon comes with highway tyres, probably the least off road worthy tyres of any Ute sold. Still rated for M+S and will get you through conditions most people ever get to experience.
In regard to the complaint re the GWM lack of torque, my now 14 year old PK Supercab Ranger has a sweet Mazda 3 liter diesel with just 380 nm and it has pulled a camper trailer and a 19 foot tandem caravan all over this country and mostly not the coastal routes, the Gibb, Streslecki, Oodnadatta, Boroloola to the South Western corner of WA, and that 380 nm does the job just fine, it just does it just fine, IMHO the breadth of torque is more important and driving to conditions. I am considering a new ute soon and I have looked at GWM, LDV and my preference may be a Sassong Musso ELX with optional suspension mods ie as with my old Ranger 2 inch lift, excellent KYB Scorcher shocks, Dynapro ATM's. And the Musso in that form only has 420 nm but a broad torque band and the same sweet Aisan 6 speed as in the Mazda/Isuzu and Hilux. I would like to see a similar test with the superbly assembled Musso, 7 year warranty and ( I think roadside assist) knowing that a fraction of the $20 - 25,000 saved on a Hilux or Ranger will allow a considerable amount of good aftermarket accessories, bar, canopy, lights. Toyota, Ford, Isuzu etc need to sharpen up their pricing, just look at the cost of the same vehicles in Thailand to see the big profit the Makers are touching the Australian buyers up with! As for reliability, Toyota have certainly had their problems, injectors, Cats, , Ford, no cooling on ZF autos and continual activation of limp mode towing in heat, failed dual mass clutches in earlier models, a fair share of low mileage 3.2 engine failures and turbos. Navaras, repeated rear main seal failures, and the list goes on. The Chinese manufacturers are here and improving a good product rapidly, some just have issues as many in the 60's did with what then was termed "Jap crap" until it was realised a Landcruiser was superior to a 22 or 2a Landrover and whats more didn't break axles every 5 minutes when snatching second gear with a load on the back, ask me how I know? History will repeat! Just my take!
The Ranger at times has outsold the Hilux and always the DMax so it would have been good to include the biturbo Ranger in this test.. In regards to ride and power it would have been the bested the other vehicles.
Just purchased the GWM X as a company car which will do lots of highway kms and frequent towing. 2022 dealwr demo model for $39,500 DA including tow ball and soft tonneau cover. Did lots of research and am excitted to take delivery soon!!.....😎👍💥❤️
Yea Nah! How many people pay the big money, rarely go off-road, still spend more than they earn on accessories, then wonder why mortgage payments and bills are a source of stress. Ok now that’s said. The GWM hasn’t got enough power and torque. It’s basically useless, 🤔 hang on, not as much as the others but more than any 4wd that was produced in an era when real 4wdriviers were hitting the tracks of Australia, without complaints. I don’t own a cannon, I do have a dual cab Ute that does the job. Btw I don’t hit washouts and blame the car.
In fact, GWM has a 3.0T engine with 354 hp and 500 Nm in China. However, it seems that GWM is not in a hurry to launch this engine overseas. Maybe it feels that relying on a lower price to expand overseas market share as soon as possible is the most important direction at present.
I have a cannon for a daily runner and some carrying materials for my Roofing company it's ok for that stuff but if I was gonna go out back I'd most probably buy a landrover 110
Hate to be this guy but feels like you're actually just a bit past the time with tech. Drove one today and definitely didn't feel like too much and a bit of luxury in a ute is sometimes nice. The full 360 camera assists makes for a really good off-road experience when doing tight trails. If you want a basic no frills ute then maybe a used 2000 model Hilux is for you.... Also a better comparison to the rogue would be the XSR which has the beefier suspension.
One thing that you need to consider is the long term value of the gwv. You may spend $20k aftermarket gear but it’s still gwv. Is it worth spending that amount of money to bring it up to the standard of the others two? Food for thought.
It's clear that you haven't seen one so commenting on quality is a bit unjust. If a car worth $70,000 new will cost $35,000 at 5 years, it's pretty normal that a car that you buy for $40,000 will only be $20,000 at five years...
If you're travelling in the bush, reliability and service network/parts availability is critical, and there - the Hilux is and always will be king. Save $25k and buy an Hilux SR.
True, and in 10 years we know, there will always be a Toyota dealership, cant say the same for a Chinese one, especially if they decide to take Taiwan.
Given the price, is the Toyota twice the car compared to the GWM? It would be interesting to modify the GWM with some shocks/springs and a tune and then compare the two cars again.
@@sofascialistadankulamegado1781 Japan is the only country that directly attacked Australia. Should we hold a grudge? I worked for a Japanese company for a long time, They get a good product and continue to make it better, they know what works and what dosen't work, and they have been basically making the same truck for ever , but over time just improved it every year so thats why its so good. Yes they will bury me in a Toyota. Great video.
Do not forget, buying parts for chinese utes are far much cheaper than the Japanese parts, Chinese ute and cars are taking over, Japanese car are too expensive
How is the aftersales support with each of these brands. It's all good and well to talk about them when they are working, but what happens when they breakdown?
Nothing wrong with the suspension. If you look at the video, they only show the GWM going through a dip. If you hit a dip at 100 KMh, in any car/ute you'll be flying around. Slow the f**K down and drive to conditions, problems solved..
Casual travelling, going to the beach sometimes with mates. Help a friend who is bogged. If this is what you see yourself doing then a gwm is better for you. If 4X4 is your thing and you do it all the time, and you tow off road trailer at the same time then a GWM won't cut it, but most people won't be doing that.
Also, spend the money you save on a caravans or a camper. Just don't expect to be able to overtake like a wildtrek, but if you are watching this review, then you probably can't afford one anyway
If you press the temp ie 23 it will open up the ac screen … why do you not film yourselves going over the rough as you did in the GWM and made such a grunt going over in the other two? Bias? Hmm
One thing I can say about gwm as a panel beater, is the are awful for getting parts. 6 plus months wait on any panels. Toyota you can still get brand new factory billboard for 1995 model Hilux. Something to consider if you buying a new car is how will you own it and expect to be able to get parts
The one thing that I noticed about all these cars is that while they are quite underpowered with small engines compared to the competition. They could be made better with better tunes, turbos and possibly even bigger engines. They are certainly value for money when you compare the features. I suppose like the reviewer said in the video, the money that you save on getting the GWM, could be put into giving it aftermarket suspension and engine mods; which would be heaps better than what comes from factory in any of the utes.
unfortunately the cannon we get is based on commercial and 'normal' spc. in China where it came from there are the 'off road cannon' spc for sale. it has more power three diff snorkel and redesigned front and rear, but we can't get it here, left hand drive only.
It's a good thing to have a entry level car on the market to keep the likes of Toyota and Ford honest with their prices. I think charging more than $60k and $70k for a car is ridiculous.
For the price you could splash out on a suspension kit for gwm ute. As mentioned elsewhere this is it's 2nd go at ute not that we should count the gwm steed🤣
I don't understand why reviewers complain about options they can easily turn off. It also makes no sense to dismiss the more comfortable and plush inside of GWM just because the reviewer is used to hard plastics of the Hilux. One needs to disregard thier biases and personal preferences and assess what actually matters.

Hehehe, hell, I would also call it a GMW
Great review CC, you guys are killing it. would love to see more out-of-town tests like this.

Good cruising speed around 150kph.
Spend a couple grand to improve the GWM's lacking parts and you still het a cheaper vehicle that can do the same and has more features.
Thanks Ponch! Another great, and as always, honest review. Having driven a GWM I reckon I could live with the power deficit (it's just not that obvious in isolation) and a quick trip to Pedders should sort out that front end. Keep up the amazing work!

Do you think the GWM can be used to tow a car trailer for commercial purpose for towing cars on a daily basis
You will find it on UA-cam! Out of 8 Utes the Museo came last
All that time and distance and you missed a few things TBH.
Man, that off-road driving looks like it belongs in the Dakar 😅
@@kalomboC How good would it be to given 3 utes and told to rip in on outback tracks 😂 they have the best job
Your issue may be with how the relative lack of power goes when towing. It will only exacerbate it.
"Especially that grille" comment of the video at the end. Love it.
You really know how to communicate how a suspension's behaviour affects the driving experience. Top marks to you!
Most Ute owners go to the supermarket and beach

GWM has been making Pickup trucks for 15-20 years, they follow ford and that is why different from Japanese makes.

Great review Mate good to see utes taken out on outback tracks/roads I was a bees dick away from getting a GWM Ute but I ended up getting a 22 plate Rexton Ultimate with the iron man suspension upgrade delivery the end of this month it’s a beautiful rig and you get a lot more for what you pay for cheers Mate
400nm was plenty 2 years, 3 years ago...can't see whats changed other than the big players beefing up more torque.
It's not about how much the engine makes, it's about what at the wheels. My 25 HP tractor will pull a 170 HP Hilux up the hill any day.
Great to see a outback review 👍
Just bought a 2023 XSR and absolutely love it
If 20k savings was put into your mortgage at 5% compound interest, you have saved 40k in 10 years, or 66k in 20 years. That's a round the world trip or retiring early, I know which I would choose!
What's the lifespan and cost of the injectors in these modern high torque diesels? I keep hearing thousands of dollars of injectors at 100-150k mark.
What tyre pressures did you have on these utes on the gravel outback roads? 21-25psi is recommended.
Tyres are not springs, the gravel dirt roads in the Pilbara and Kimberley have many sharp stones to cut into soft Tyres 🙄
Would GWM benefit from teaming up with a local tuner to offer a $5000-$8000 "Outback Pack" to fix these issues?
After spending the 5 to 8k for the outback pack for gwm, there are still change compared to the others
Just buy $1000 worth of explosives and fix it right
No
My thoughts too, imagine installing mods on this truck. It will be a really good offroader for the price.
The dmax looked very dusty on the inside or did you leave the doors open. Or does it not seal properly ?
@@chriswording8638 I love mine so far :) I wish the seats had a ventilation feature and could tilt back a bit more for some more under-thigh support.
Not until it breaks down in the desert
Exactly.
Im sorry but the Bi Turbo should never have been released.
Unreliable
10 speed auto is a disaster.
Who drives like this on dirt roads or tracks a rollover or bent chassis waiting to happen why retune the suspension just slow down.
@@kevinrich5222 That 3.0l engine is petrol driven btw.
I’d love to see a video of the GWM after $10g is spent upgrading it
There are a few OZ-based businesses fully dedicated to the Cannon, they're easy to find on Instagram.
One thing that you need to consider is the long term value of the gwv. You may spend $20k aftermarket gear but it’s still gwv. Is it worth spending that amount of money to bring it up to the standard of the others two? Food for thought.
You WILL regret your choices at trade in time ….
No one's spending $20,000 on aftermarket gear - just a few choice mods like a lift kit, A/T tyres and a bull bar, and she's sweet as!
It's clear that you haven't seen one so commenting on quality is a bit unjust. If a car worth $70,000 new will cost $35,000 at 5 years, it's pretty normal that a car that you buy for $40,000 will only be $20,000 at five years...
@@chriswording8638 Yep so you’d lose less money on the 40k car.
Isuzu for me always
If you're travelling in the bush, reliability and service network/parts availability is critical, and there - the Hilux is and always will be king. Save $25k and buy an Hilux SR.
True, and in 10 years we know, there will always be a Toyota dealership, cant say the same for a Chinese one, especially if they decide to take Taiwan.
@Ronald Dumpster yep we said that about Holden and Ford aswell
@@ronalddumpster6168 China has every right to take Taiwan! We should be minding our own business
Given the price, is the Toyota twice the car compared to the GWM? It would be interesting to modify the GWM with some shocks/springs and a tune and then compare the two cars again.
It's also an ethics issue. But most consumers don't think about where their products come from and who owns the company that produces them.
@@sofascialistadankulamegado1781 Japan is the only country that directly attacked Australia.
Should we hold a grudge?
The Australian government made the "free" trade deals which were unfair....other countries taxed our exports but we didn't tax their imports. This killed our local car industry. So ask yourself who is the one causing the issue? Our government, or the consumer? Clearly the government is the one causing the issue. If you want to be ethical....never buy any new car because they are all imported. Just recondition the old banger in Australia and support local jobs.
And also don't buy a mobile phone or laptop or TV because they're all made in China.
This is the new world order pushed by communists inside the USA. USA allowed it's manufacturers to make in China... Ask yourself who is running this orchestrated operation.
@@sofascialistadankulamegado1781 Its in fact not ethical to let your self be indoctrinated with far right nationalist bigotry.
Mitsubishi Sigma country, RIP Jack Absalom.
Really enjoyed this.
Thanks so much.
Glad you enjoyed it
I have had four toyotas , some were old and not real nice to drive, I just went out and turned the key and drive them. I purchased them with 100k on the clock and sold them with about 250k on the clock, serviced them as required, but nothing else ever required fixing. My friend had a early chinese truck, he was using it in the building trade, to be honest it could not hack it. He now uses a toyota Hi ace. New, the price difference makes you think, you pay top price even for second hand toyotas. When the chinese catch up there price will also.
First sensible comment here, never mind the long term implications of supporting china’s economy to save money…
I like the lounge feel of the GWM so do my grand children lol
Will be looking at a GWM to buy soon don’t care about resale GWM is fantastic value for money
Can the GWM be used to tow car trailers for commercial purpose. Like everyday use
I don't know about doing it every day; we did tow a 2700 kg trailer and it went fine: ua-cam.com/video/EQowT_v3Hz8/v-deo.html
It seems a lot of the negative comes back to the suspension and you can buy a hell of a lot of suspension upgrades for 25k
Nothing wrong with the suspension. If you look at the video, they only show the GWM going through a dip. If you hit a dip at 100 KMh, in any car/ute you'll be flying around. Slow the f**K down and drive to conditions, problems solved..
Great overview of the GWM, How does it handle on the beach drive and sand?
Would love to see the Musso in an outback comparative test.
😂😂🤣🤣
LMAO
You forgot to mention overall reliability aftersales service and resale value which are important things to take into account.
so what thy're saying is get a gwm, suspension, an exhaust and tune
Use some of the money saved and upgrade the suspension, and tyres. Still be lot cheaper
Can a bull bar be fitted to the GWM?
The one thing that I noticed about all these cars is that while they are quite underpowered with small engines compared to the competition. They could be made better with better tunes, turbos and possibly even bigger engines. They are certainly value for money when you compare the features. I suppose like the reviewer said in the video, the money that you save on getting the GWM, could be put into giving it aftermarket suspension and engine mods; which would be heaps better than what comes from factory in any of the utes.
Hilux has the shittiest interior out of basically all the utes
I wonder what the resale value would be of the great wall ???
Hi is the question I’ve got 40 grand what do I buy new Chinese or 2nd hand Dmax or hilux?
Do you want a warranty?
2nd hand.
Beautiful information, Thank you for your honestly.
After 5 years, what is the GWM worth?
Not sure because it only launched in 2021
A six-pack.
depends if the fuel tank is full or empty.
unfortunately the cannon we get is based on commercial and 'normal' spc. in China where it came from there are the 'off road cannon' spc for sale. it has more power three diff snorkel and redesigned front and rear, but we can't get it here, left hand drive only.
If the choice is a new GWM or 10 year old Hilux I’d go a new car with a suspension tune
wait so is this a car or a dual cab? and you then have to ask which would buy if your life depended on it in the outback
The important thing here is that the GWM or the Isuzu do not overturn in curves, unfortunately toyota does not comply in safety.
a couple of suspension adjustments, better shocks etc ??
I don't understand why reviewers complain about options they can easily turn off. It also makes no sense to dismiss the more comfortable and plush inside of GWM just because the reviewer is used to hard plastics of the Hilux. One needs to disregard thier biases and personal preferences and assess what actually matters.
Well, what you’re asking for here is for us to assess on the basis of what subjectively matters to you
