I had one and wrote an entire album in which one single reached top 40 R&B, 1992. the next batch of songs I wrote, procured me a publishing deal and a record deal at Warner Brothers. That keyboard was instrumental in my career as a musician and a songwriter and singer. I no longer have the keyboard but still have my entire library of discs for it which I’ve kept in case I ever want to try to find another EPS and load up for nostalgia sake.
so glad I found this- I bought an EPS new when they came out- it did a lot of soundtrack work but has been sitting in the corner of the studio for a looooong time- it always makes me smile when I fire it up still. I should get some more samples for current projects and bring it back into the fold.
I would sure like more details about the flash floppy drive. I'd like to know where to get it, how to install it, and how to operate it. Maybe a good subject for a video? Seems to me you have to use the factory disc to operate the EPS. How do you get around that? About the mic input. I think you'll find if you use a cheap tube mic preamp like the ART Studio V3, or Behringer Mic100 you'll be able to easily boost the level to something that will work well for you. Plus, those both use 12AX7 tubes for that nice warm sound. Or distorted, if you prefer. Using the mic input will open up a wide array of natural sounds.
Can you give me more information about the specific model of Gotek you used to replace the floppy disk? As well as some information on how to replace it! It would be invaluable information for me!
@@IvailoDemidov I used the Gotek drive provided by samplerzone.com Installing the Gotek requires flipping up the main front panel. Then unscrew the panel which holds the disc drive and mod wheels. Then unscrew cabling is a straight swap between the old drive and the new one
@@lugo4905 Thanks for the answer - only if I can ask exactly which model - it must have EPS support. I found some alternative option but I want to explore this one too!

hello my friend :) i'm really glad you uploaded these tutorials for this machine. i was lucky and found myself an eps with 4x memory for only 200 bucks! now i have some questions i couldn't answer by reading the manual. can you adjust the samplerate after sampling or is this only possible while sampling? the second question is, can i somehow change the volume of a sample after i put multiple samples on one instrument track? And the last question is, can you play samples on different velocities like in 16 levels (mpc)?
@@Paddydacook yes you can adjust the sample rate after you sample. That feature can be found in the “Command” menu and scroll to “adjust sample rate” or Command then press 8. Hit enter and then you’ll be prompted to load the OS disk. Then all of the sample rates will be offered up. Hit enter and you’ll have a preview screen “new” or “old”
@@Paddydacook to adjust the volume of an individual sample on a multi sample layer, hit the edit button then select the number of the wave sample you want to adjust “WS: 5” for example - then hit the “AMP” key. Use the data slider or the up/down arrows to adjust the volume of just that sample You can adjust ALL the samples volumes if you select ALL in the edit menu
@@Paddydacook there’s no velocity play like an MPC, but you can copy the wave to a different key by copying “data” only and the way you’re not using extra memory
i have another question^^ sometimes i can't adjust start and end points because there is an error called "layer edit not allowed" what does this mean and how can i change this?
I'm actually wanting to acquire one as I saw that rza used one and necro makes more of his stuff if not all on it...all I have is a Yamaha DJ x and it only holds 6 seconds worth of samples and there's other sequencer problems
You absolutely *can* timestretch on the EPS. It is the best timestretch you will find, with granular control via any cc controller (obviously the mod wheel is the best choice). It's not in any manual, but rather is a hack. It was taught to me in the early 90s by pioneering Jungle artist 1.8.7. from Pittsburgh (the first live Jungle performer in North America). 1.8.7., known then as Joe LeSesne, transitioned in 1998 and now goes by Jordana LeSesne. You can't even find info on how to do the EPS timestretch/pitch-shift online as far as I can tell. It's a closely guarded secret 🤫 😉
Mine I made it work with an SD Card and I have 4 drives in it. It's very fast. The floppy is too slow to load samples. I also have the 4xMem Expander. Nice video thanks.
There's one of these for sale on Reverb and before I purchase it can you tell me if you can sample a voice through the mic ?? Like if I wanted oohs and ahhhs for adding to a song to backup a singer.. or even a word and then be able to hear it with playing a chord .. you may have heard Petra's keyboardist play the famous "Jesus loves you" solo.. if not UA-cam has it . I would appreciate the knowledge on this
Short answer= no. Long answer= not really but there is a trick where you copy the sample to all 8 layers and modulate the start times of each loop by key. It takes a lot of work and doesn’t sound that great. It would be a lot easier to do it in a daw or your phone first.
How do you think the EPS holds up as a MIDI controller, LUGO? It’s one of the earliest models with polyphonic aftertouch. Commenting in 2024, I would be tempted to get this keyboard less as a sampler than as a controller.
As a sequencer-controller, it ho,es up well. You can sequence 8 tracks on the unit itself. Record mod wheel and pitch movements, and yes, aftertouch. But this is really a sampler that Can be used as a controller - not the other way around IMHO
I’ve heard people having success with this issue by disconnecting the ribbon cable, spraying a bit of WD40 on the posts and reattaching the cable again. Make sure the unit is powered off or unplugged- I’ve shocked myself messing around before 😂
IT WORKED! just tried it out today doing what you said. also found a cable that was kinda half out of its socket which may of been the issue, but whateva it was, its fixed. thank you mate. big help!
Great videos. I have an excellent condition EPS with USB floppy emulator, 2x memory expander, hard case, and lots of flyers and manuals. I was trying to sell for $400, but maybe I will just keep and have some fun.

How many different sounds can you sample to a floppy ?
Anywhere from 9 seconds at the highest sample rate, to 83 seconds at the lowest sample rate.
If I remember right the system will only allow a maximum of 20 samples per disk, regardless of how much space is available.
@@danielrobinson9679 I have an instrument with a different drum sound on every key - well over 20 sounds that’s all saved to one disk.
