Thank you for this. I am currently looking after someone with dementia and when I asked the neurologist for advice on how to handle blowouts, he said, "Buy him a joke book and tell him jokes". That neurologist was a joke.
I work VA swing bed. 25 years . I have been hit , threaten numerous time and called every dang name you can think of .Every patient is different. Sometimes a joke works, sometimes thorazine.
Thanks for the download with this video. I'm a caregiver and, as it appears my client will need to transition to assisted living, this will be useful in the meantime.
First comment!!! Thanks for all of your hard work. I really appreciate your advice. As a CNA, I wasn't trained how to deal with dementia at all. So, it's was really frustrating because they weren't following my directions for the most part.
I finally found something my LO is interested in. I ended up doing the jigsaw puzzles I bought for her. She loves organizing and she has a collection of long forgotten costume jewelry. I bought her some trays and it will redirect her for a bit. It's something she can do even when she's a bit tired. Even if she doesn't remember that they are hers she really enjoys it. Still looking for other things she can do with her hands.
@@kayhey3426 The hilarious part about regular household chores like folding towels or doing dishes is she sometimes thinks she’s working and when she finishes she’s ready to go home. So it kind of backfires. (She’s even asked about pay!) She earned money as a housekeeper when she was in university. It’s enough to stall her for a bit, while I come up with something else.
This is great advice. Thank you!

That's a great ideal! Laughter doesn't come often enough for people with dementia.
@@vikingkitten It's actually a bad idea. When someone is taking a swing at you or running into traffic, a knock knock joke isn't going to do anything.

@@vikingkitten This channel has the best tips I have ever found - tips that actually work. I should direct that neurologist to it.

i love this idea!
Folding towels. Nurses do it all the time. Bring some hand towels and washcloths and ask her to fold them.
